Re: Pentax KP Pictures
I like the principle of 3 alternative grips. Why? Because feel & fit is how I've recommended cameras to many people. That is, hold it and see how it works in your hand. I'm a little confused about the Fx1, Fx2, Fx3. Or am I too out of touch with the new tech for those and the C1, C2, C3, Ch/Cl That delete button alternative function looks like a (video mode) crop, panorama, or compress maybe? It's definitely on the hobby/enthusiast side. That would explain the simpler/lighter-duty screen articulation. The front knob angle seems immaterial. Might be an individual preference thing. It does remind me of the Nikon Df. But it seems to represent, as noted, a style uniformity move as it borrows from the K1. I'd anticipate seeing more of this in the next few models. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
My Spidey senses are tingling
As the letter designated bodies are entirely hobbyist and the numbered bodies are prosumer bodies... First this ... I anticipate he KP will probably be a top-of-the-line hobbyist camera. Still good, but maybe not up to the ruggedness of the 5/3/1 series. Could be Full Frame. Because they need a full-frame basic-featured body. Because people just want to take pictures. Maybe $999. Then { This That will leave room for a new K3 III. Anticipating a new body design that will improve on circuit size, allowing both GPS & popup flash. But probably nothing significant otherwise. A tech step, not a tech leap. Or A K2 that makes 24Mp FF practical and inexpensive. That would fill in a market gap quite nicely. Perhaps $1199. } Ok, the tingling has stopped. An opinion: How much better can things get?
When I look at almost everyone's digital camera offerings, they're all so good. Even the slowest AF is quite quick & does a fine job. The features, like geotagging/gps were unimaginable with film. Pixel shift improves on the in-camera edge processing. Others will follow. Once we got computer-designed lenses with aspherical elements then even once-mediocre lenses started to produce decently, let alone what was happened to the nice lenses. The only rough point is the price of good lenses. They've gone up while bodies drop. Are the lenses really that good?
I read a good review on the D FA 28-105. But $500? While I appreciate Pentax, ok Ricoh, apparently pulling a Sony and going largely pro-sumer with some quality glass, I need to be able to afford it. :-) Has anyone compared the three film 28-105 lenses to the D FA? Also, I've put the FA50/2.8 macro on a DSLR in shop. Have to be careful about light intensity as I can get a blue spot in the middle of the images. Have read of this on Nikon forums as well. It appears to be a conflict between the character of the old film coatings against reflections off the sensor. But it only happens under product lighting (FL). The improved contrast of the newer generation of coatings has proven itself significant. I gave up on LF, mostly because after turning 60, and a shoulder injury about 10 years ago, carrying that bulk of film holders became too much. I would sometimes use a rise for landscapes, and maybe a slight tilt for certain portraits, but not much. Not enough to justify the weight/bulk. Of course this thing isn't light. Not in the least. But with a pro-pack it's still less than even the old Nagaoka 4x5 w/ a dozen holders, bag or tent, etc. One of the shots I did on Sat was the new daughter-in-law on a staircase. For best grip I ended up holding the camera grip-down and resting it on my braced arm. Grip-up just allowed too much sway. 6x7 & others
Just processed my first 3 rolls from it last night. Two using XP2 and one of TMax100. Negs look good. Printing tonight. Am looking for a good price for a 6x7->K adapter. Since it's the later lens version it has the improved design/coatings I'm thinking it might be a nice, though bulky, portrait lens. Also, shooting more lately with the K5. Oldest son got married last month and Sat I re-shot some pics that the hired photog didn't do as well as they had hoped. Will post some of them tonight or tomorrow. The more I shoot the K5 the more I like the results. (F28/2.8, F50/1.7, FA28-105) But right now I'm looking at a wider lens. Son has an A24/2.8. Would be useful but it's not awfully wide. Maybe a zoom (with the mid-point) in the 18-20 range? Recommendations? Also, a good 200mm would come in handy. Probably not anything longer. Some 200/2.8, or even f/4, would be ok. Re: Advice on large format photography
> I should be grateful indeed if you could share your experiences and >give me some advice on this. >Or, in other words, would you like to push me or stop me? > >Bulent I would recommend against a 5x7 camera for practical reasons. 1) if you're shooting 4x5, the camera is a lot bigger 2) if you're able to find 5x7 film ... good for you. It's hard to find. You'll end up with a bulky 4x5. That said ... 4x5 results are awesome. 8x10 is, too. But ... up to 16x20 it's tough to see the different between a quality medium format shot (like a Blad, Mamiya RZ, or Fuji) and a 4x5. So if you're printing 11x14 and you're not needing to do any lens movements a medium format might be a better bet. If you're shooting landscapes or table-top stills where you want some rise or tilt, then consider a 4x5 body with a roll back. But then you'll have to spend a good amount on quality lenses lest your shots look a bit low in contrast or detail. (IOW, avoid the old 50s & 60s vintage Schneiders.) Of course a medium format with everything might be the Fuji GX680 series. Quality glass and solid hardware. Plus all the movements you'll probably need. And it's a lot easier to process file medium format negs. My thoughts are then: First) 4x5. You'll be able to do medium format as well as sheet film. Not very heavy but holders can be bulky. Second) Medium format will let you do everything a 4x5 will. More weight on the hardware side, less work in the darkroom. Third) 8x10. Make your time worthwhile and just print contacts. You'll not be disappointed. But you'll spend a bunch per shot so make 'em count. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

AF film lenses on DSLR
At work I got the FA50/2.8 macro to have something AF for working in the darker warehouse area. But what I've seen, and it's not just a Pentax situation, when using it with the florescent lights for piece shots I get this blue dot in the middle of the image. Have yet to work with light placement to see if I can eliminate it. But from what I've been reading it has to do with multiple factors, one of which is the nature of the film coatings and the light interactions/reflections with the sensor surface. And a misuse of the term "circle of confusion". It is, to be certain, an archaic use of the term confusion and today we might better say convergence. Re: OOF rendering in focus stacks
>I think that looks really good! Nothing to sneeze at, for sure. > >Mark Ah choose the top one. This has me curious. Can we use this technology to emulate a variety of lens designs? Take, for instance the old Pentax-A 70-210/4 vs the Takumar-A 70-200. The Tak-A has a much shorter transition from in-focus to out-of-focus. Might one also use stacking with a mirror lens to eliminate the doughnut bokeh? Perhaps through stacking someone might emulate the unique character of a Petzval or a Protar. They certainly can't be done in a single layer. Will be interesting to see what the future holds. An engineer might use such technology with appropriate (mathematical) filters to predict lens design behavior without ever building it. Like an optical add-in for catia.
