-- Original Message -- From: "Juan Buhler" To: "Pentax-Discuss Mail List" Sent: 17/04/21 2:27:32 Subject: Small sensors are better than you think I made a video about how I like cameras with small sensors. Featuring the MX-1, Ricoh GR Digital IV and photos from the Q7 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQWxUFJR7Xk These cameras have become basically unnecessary given that we have things like the GR with an APS-C sensor (and the 16MP GR2 is one of my favorite cameras of all time). But I really think there's something about the images coming out of 1/1.7" or so sensors at around 12MP that compares well with grainy 35mm black and white film. j I gotta agree too. I've been pocketing a Olympus XZ-1 for years, and recently upgraded that to a XZ-2. These, too, are equivalent to the MX-1, GR IV, etc. Both have their custom settings set up for B, with a little extra sharpening and contrast, and get used at ISO320/640. Re[2]: PSEO::Peak hour, Centre Rd
Pete , your nice moddy shot reminds me that - back in March Ralf and I were comparing notes on our central city neighborhoods.. with similar atmospheres and thinking how nice it was were it not for the pandemic.. I probably should have done more documentation than I did.. Just didnt' feel much like shooting ann Thanks Ann. Central Melbourne is literally deserted - empty trams running up & down empty streets. I'd love to get in there, but it's 20km away, and we're restricted to 5km radius of our home. It'll cost me $1650 if I venture in... Apart from (non-Pentax) holiday snaps, I haven't felt like shooting much either. However I feel this is starting to change a bit. Haven't worked since March, so I have had time. I've been forcing my self to take 2 photos outside our house each morning, from the same spots. Did this during our first lockdown, and am continuing it through this one. This has helped me look for more things to shoot, I think. Re: PESO - from my dirty office window last Sunday..
New York University has been gobbling up our neighborhood.. and some of the apartments inthe older buildings on our street have become student housing. The students have returned from across the country two weeks early to quarantine themselves before classes start if they have come from states with a dangerously high Covid infection rate. I haven't been looking for things to photo at all these days.. except for stuff I want to sell on ebay, but I happened to look out my office window last Sunday in the afternoon because I heard a commontion around the corner on 1st ave. That turned out to be a cyclist protest ride that I wasn't quick enough ti get my camera off the tripod and get some shots having gotten to see only the last of the crowd going by.. then I looked across the street and found this. As my downstairs neighbor put it "prancing and posing" with no pretense of social distacing. The students are out and about in the neighborhood already mostly maskless .. not really quarantining themselves. We ( folks in the 'hood) are guessing it won't be too long before NYU will have to shut down the in person classes. https://annsan.smugmug.com/On-the-Road-or-On-Foot/2020-New-York-at-home-and-on-silent-streets/i-LtRPNDM/A Universities in Melbourne have gone to 100% online learning. Same here. It was one of my favorite lenses on film (MZ-S), together with the matching EX converters. If so, what say you? IQ was quite good, and so was build quality. I tend to use it less now, prefer the DA 50-135 for the shorter end, and the Bigma (with OS and HSM) for the long end. Except for the Bigma (which I don't own), I agree with Jan and I'd go a little further. That Sigma is an excellent lens. Some years ago I compared it to the Pentax FA* 2.8/80-200 and it was not so far from it. About resolution and sharpness, the Pentax was a little better at center ad a little softer at edges. All in all, quite a tie. The real pluses of the Pentax were an overall better brilliance of the image (color balance and such) and, most visible , a much better control of flare and ghost. The problem with some Sigma lenses (at least those I had the occasion to own) is you cannot really get accurate AF: Should you tune for say 70mm, you have a visible error at 200, and vice-versa. The same happens (even more critically) with the latest Sigma DC 17-70mm OS, which I sold quickly for that reason. Back to the Sigma 70-200mm AF issue, I then decided to set perfect focus around 150mm, so that I get fine results 100 to 200mm, while forgetting to use that lens around 70-80mm. After all, I own other lenses covering such focal lengths. So now I choose which one to take with me between DA* 50-135mm and the Sigma 70-200mm. Nine out of ten, the Pentax suits me better for the combination of focal length, size and noiseless operation (needed at performances I shot). At outdoor concerts, I take the Sigma with me. I'd love a DA/FA* 2.8/70-200mm! No, the DA* 4/60-250mm is not such a lens, as I miss that extra stop. Good information - many thanks. I've also looked at the 50-135, but it's more than double the price of the 70-200 down here and, while the 50-135 is a wonderful lens and I'd love one, I don't know if it's 2+ times as good as the Sigma. And I don't think I could stretch my relationship with the finance manager that far... :-) Regards, Pete Mac in Melbourne -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

My jogging routine takes about 35 minutes normally, which is also the time it takes me to cycle to work (and the same back again). After the friction this has caused in the community I will request a statement from Pentax once again why they think that this is a valid sample. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- Steve Desjardins -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

GESO - Airborne 8
Yay! Finally got time to get out and use my camera and new flash (AF360FGZ), the latter a birthday present from my son. He's a recent Pentax convert too, having recently purchased one of those Russian 16mm lenses for his K100D Super. Anyway, enough of that... Went in to Motor-Ex a couple of weeks ago. Motor-Ex is an annual hot-rod show held at Sydney's Olympic Park. There's always a good combination of traditional rods and later custom beat-boxes, as well as custom bikes and vintage cars. Doesn't matter what you are looking at, creativity and workmanship is always first-class. My neighbour, Bluey - remember him? http://picasaweb.google.com/petergly/OnePhoto#5404253613717348338 - is heavily involved in the local hot rod scene, and has been for many, many years. His daily driver is a VW beetle with a 302 CU V8 in the FRONT; 500,000 km at last count. But his latest creation is astounding - it's here - http://picasaweb.google.com/petergly/Airborne8?authkey=Gv1sRgCJCb383H2f__Tg#. This car is constructed from pieces of 62 other cars, built between the early 30's and the mid-60's. The design is wholly his own, the construction a 7-year exercise involving a small band of friends (and a couple of neighbours). The Airborne 8 was unveiled at Motor-Ex to a very appreciative crowd. All taken with my trusty ist-DL, a Pentax DA II 18-55mm and the new AF360FGZ (used in some, not all). Enjoy! Comments, etc most welcome.
