IMNSHO: Religion can be a good thing.  I have been a member off and on of an 
organized religion for much of my life. Which is not to say that I accept all 
aspects of the doctrinal theology, but rather I appreciate the community of 
shared values and the commitment to doing good in the world.

No, Religion capital R is not all that big a problem. Zealotry capital Z on the 
other hand is a poison whether it is manifested among evangelicals or 
conservative Sunnis or Buddhists  or Catholics or whatever. You are welcome to 
your ideas as long as they don’t hurt me, you are welcome to try to “educate” 
me as long as I will be heard when I say no, you are welcome to let your 
behavior be guided by your principles as long as you don’t cause me harm or try 
to force me to be bound by those same principles. E.g., someone may believe in 
the Canon, that’s ok, but don’t make me sell my Pentax!

Nope. It’s obvious. I’m not a practicing Catholic and don’t really care, but 
anti-Catholic sentiment in the media and elsewhere is evident. Even my paper, 
the Times, is tougher on the Catholic church than it is on Islam or 
Evangelicals. I think it’s historical. It goes back to the days when Irish and 
Polish immigrants were considered second rate citizens. But enough said. We 
aren’t supposed to discuss religion or politics, but I observed a beat down 
underway and wanted to respond.

We all have our shortcomings. Evangelical Protestants are by and large 
uncompromisingly racist. Muslims in many Middle East countries routinely 
dismember lawbreakers and stone women who have been raped. A 14 year old is 
scheduled for execution in Saudi Arabia. But we dare nit disparage Protestants 
or Muslims. Yes, there are some awful Catholic clerics who have too long been 
protected but at least the church is now trying to make amends. And those nuns 
who rapped unruly English schoolboys across the knuckles to make them act like 
men? I count them as heroes.

They've done their best to earn it. The local cardinal is still trying
to weasel out of a situation where he should have stepped down months
ago. He has demonstrably protected a notorious child molester among his

People are leaving the catholic church in droves, over here, and their
number is only limited by the fact that you have to appear in person at
the local court to do so. Owing to the pandemic, the court only offers a
few thousand appointments per month which can be booked online at the
beginning of each month and they're gone within minutes.

As someone who has been one of their pet targets for most of my life I
could go on and on about the niceties of this lot, how they ruined my
youth and much more. Yet, I'll stop here because this is a photo forum.

Well, my mother spent her whole school career at St Joseph's Convent in 
Durban central & I spent my first two years of school life there before 
we emigrated to Rhodesia. The Nuns, from a French order of the Sacred 
Heart, were loving, gentle & excellent educators. The school was closed 
with great sadness in 1965 because there were no longer enough nuns to 
run it. The few nuns left & the schoolkids all transferred to another 
nearby suburban Convent. My wife, on the other hand, spent her junior 
school years at a Convent in Rhodesia where the Nuns were tyrants.


What I am trying to say is you can't generalise & say all Nuns are 
"Mafiosi". The vast majority on Nuns are certainly not.


As far as Bob's image is concerned, as Paul has already commented, you 
can easily misinterpret it according to your prejudices.

I have good memories of the nuns who educated me and my siblings. They were IHM 
nuns who operated just one elementary school in Chicago, where we were 
fortunate enough to be students in the ‘50s. They’re based in Monroe, Michigan, 
so serve mainly in that state. But they were excellent educators. I recall some 
of them were taking graduate courses t the University of Chicago. One of my 
classmates became a nun. We’re friends and have lunch every couple of years. 
During the Vietnam war she led a group called Women Against the War, and 
eventually became a Washington lobbyist for the Catholic church. Now she leads 
self help seminars here in metro Detroit. Smart lady and a true public servant.

The nun in the photo doesn’t strike me as aggressive. She appears more 
contemplative. But personal beliefs always affect what we see.

various churches, the catholic one in particular, are very, very dark.
The churches were put in charge of educating the Indian out of the Indians
(the aboriginal Canadians had the word Indian hung on them as an
identifier).

The net result has not been a positive one.

Mafia Nuns

Hi Bob, sad that you had an experience different from mine. I went to a
Christian Brother's  Boarding School from Class 1 to 11 and earlier at St.
Joseph's Convent from Nursery, KG 1 & KG 2. I have attached some wonderful

Christ spent his "Lost Years" in India where he learnt peace and love.
The Nuns were kindly and pious and we would kiss their cross as they walked
past. The only time I was afraid when a Nun in Black Winter Dress picked me
up to cuddle. I thought she was a ghost as her skin was so white.
