aimcompute wrote: Stingray by Dan Matyola I have an affinity for Stingrays (I've always admired the '63 with the wrap around rear window). I smiled back upon seeing this. What is the texture covering the picture? Was it the plastic you were shooting through? Thanks for your comments. I chose the shot because I love rays also, and had been swimming with a couple of them a few days earlier. Also because it seems to be smiling for the camera. I don't like the texture of the shoteither. I think it's partly the smudged plastic I was shooting through, but mostly just a bad scan on my clunky old flatbed. The print looks much better, although some smudges and reflections show on the plastic surface. Dan. -- Daniel J. Time to Make Subjective PUG Comments Again
Second Time Sending... Many good shots in the November PUG. These were the ones I felt compelled to comment on. A Knife in the Back by Richard Seaman I like the strength of this image. It's powerful. Don't you just 'hate' little dopes like that? Pickering Fog by David J Brooks Nice serene image. I've seen many possibilities for shots like this (on Hwy 15 from the US Border up through Surrey). Where was it taken? Hotel at Guadalupe by Joseph Tainter Hey my house! Well it's the same color. I like the starkness in this shot. It makes one ask What was?. Unforgiving Winter by Alin Flaider I like the blowing snow. The contrast of the reddish-brown leaves. The exposed edges of the freshly cut wood. The texture of the snow on the foreground trees. First light by William Johnson Wow! What a shot. Moody. I like the lighting on the rock in the foreground. You'll be happy to know my 10-yr old son, just this second, walked up and said What's that? That's strange! Did he take it with some kind of strange camera or something? Why does it look like that? Well done... it invokes wonder. Gets the BW Landscape Award! Stingray by Dan Matyola I have an affinity for Stingrays (I've always admired the '63 with the wrap around rear window). I smiled back upon seeing this. What is the texture covering the picture? Was it the plastic you were shooting through? Old Barbershop by Luis Pinar I like the great number of elements in this shot. There's a lot for the eye to do and take in. It has feeling to it. It looks like old barbershops in the USA. Pursuer by Alexey Tikhonov Very Cold War spy vs. spy feeling in my opinion. Obviously good use of perspective, texture and lighting. Mist by Martin Mielke Beautiful colors and reflections. Love it. Hard to pick a best Color Landscape Award this month, but I give it to this one. Home of the Ancient Gods by Paul Stenquist, USA I love the mix of purples and oranges and the three distinct layers. Gorgeous. Goat Island Sunset by Aaron Reynolds Very striking, as there is more orange reflected in the water than can be seen in the sky. The edge effect definitely gives a painted on canvas impression. Gorgeous also. The Fellas by William Robb I am not an animal or pet shot lover by any stretch of the imagination. Still, I am very amazed and overcome by the anthropomorphic looks on the dog's faces. Great job on getting the details in the blacks. Ever think of becoming a pet photographer? Show this around and you might get some business! Stef and Lia, Moreton Cottage, 2000 by Cotty I like the facial expressions and that you stayed with it until you got this great shot. They were obviously having fun. I think your son (Stef?) was just letting Lia have her way. It doesn't look like he's trying THAT hard to get away. I often find myself framing at unusual angles to get the subjects. It usually ends up working to one's advantage as evidenced here. Tom C. - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. To unsubscribe, go to http://www.pdml.net and follow the directions. Show this around and you might get some business! Well, now that you mention it.. That picture was taken about an hour after we finished the protection dog seminar (don't even think about going after my wife, but Leica will happily pick my pocket and toss you my wallet so as to avoid any unpleasantness), and the dogs were still on the corner of Strange and Weird. Anyway, after the seminar, we set up a portable studio in the training room and photographed perhaps 18 doggie portrait set ups. So far, the response has been very positive, and we may expand the concept and do another shoot in the near future. Please see: http://www.accesscomm.ca/users/wrobb/Leica1.jpg http://www.accesscomm.ca/users/wrobb/Rollei1.jpg for a couple of really quick and dirty scans of the individual shots of them. It's interesting that your mention the three layers. I guess you have to be above the clouds to get more than two. This was shot at 13,000 feet. So what do you do to get them to have that look? Show them pictures of dogs chasing cats, hold out a bone, spray something in the air? :-) Tom C. We have a tape called Video Catnip. When the cats were allowed inside, they would sit in front of the TV. A couple of them would reach out to claw at the screen. Others would lunge at it. It was of birds tweeting away, sitting in branches or on the ground. Well, now that you mention it.. - Original Message - From: aimcompute Subject: Re: Time to Make Subjective PUG Comments Again So what do you do to get them to have that look? Show them pictures of dogs chasing cats, hold out a bone, spray something in the air? :-) Actually, I just set them up on a stand/ stay command, went back to the camera and talked softly to them. The trick is to get the dog to look at the lens. In the prints I made of these two scans, both dogs follow you around the room, which means they were both looking at the lens when I took the picture. We have had a couple of comments from the dog people that the picture of Rollei is a bit disturbing for this reason. He doesn't have a particularly happy expression in his picture. I like the very stern expression he gave me. We have a tape called Video Catnip. When the cats were allowed inside, they would sit in front of the TV. A couple of them would reach out to claw at the screen. Others would lunge at it. It was of birds tweeting away, sitting in branches or on the ground. Leica LOVES to watch TV. She really likes the nature programs, and interestingly, she likes football as well. We have a 27 home theatre monitor that is always covered with nose prints.
