I had a nice conversation with George Utley once. He was very funny, and quite foul-mouthed. It occurred at a friend's wedding in NYC, back in 1963, almost two decades before the premiere of the Newhart Show, and, of course, it was Tom Poston, but the wry sense of humor was all George Utley.

Larry, what you refer to as magenta fringing is the color that comes out in some of the seed heads as they age and dry out. I have another specimen that shows a lot more of the reddish color, because of its location. I do not have an image of it available to me at work, but will check tonight
