Looks like we maybe able to use 3 kinds of battery.

Though why does the grips pack have an SD card in it? Just for storage?

Yes, storage. You can also store a remote control in there too. Must
be quite large to pack all of that in...!

I hope so, given this curious extract from the Pentax jp DSLR web site:

Most digital SLRs of today use exclusive, rechargeable batteries.
PENTAX, however, strongly believes in AA-size battery compatibility
for two important reasons: Rechargeable Ni-MH batteries, which are not
only widely available in the market, but also assure stable
performance and an extended operation time, can be used; and
compatible AA-size batteries are easy to find almost anywhere in the
world for a replacement in the event of battery exhaustion.

Interesting. The battery looks identical to the Nikon EN-EL3.

Note the grip insert appears to hold an SD card. Dual cards? Or just a
holder for a spare?

Yes, according to at least one person who has seen and used the grip.

I don't think I'd use it to store an SD card, it seems somewhat
inconvenient. But as storage for my 'always thinking I lost it' IR
remote, it would be great. :-)

Still not sure that I'll buy the battery grip though. I had one for
the Canon 10D and almost never used it unless I was fitting the
monstrous EF24-70/2.8L lens on it ... that lens completely over-
balanced the already huge and heavy body.

Hmm, I've never thought of the 10D, which is on the smaller side of
average for a midrange body, as an 'already huge and heavy body'. I'll
freely admit though that Canon's add-on grips are massive, at least the
digital ones (the Elan 7N's grip is tiny and svelte, ironic in that it's
essentially the same body as the 10D).

I used Bruce's D for a day, and while I'd probably not use the K10D with a
grip, I may. The grip was really helpful shooting verticals. For someone
who is shooting a lot in portrait mode, I'd suggest at least giving the
grip a try.

I am disappointed that the power source has to be a rechargeable lithium
battery and not AA's like the other models. Am disappointed, too, that CF
cards can't be used along side SD cards like one Canon DSLR model. I'll
have to decide whether I want to move up or just use my *ist D until it
goes bust.

That's quite a surprise. I still have to decide whether it is a good or bad
one. If it can improve AF performance, it's a good move.

Above feature was known since PMA, which happened last February.

I feel for you and I too am bothered by the idea of a
dedicated rechargable battery. The only upside is that
the bats are supposed to be long lasting (500 shots
w/50% flash use) and, if they are priced well, you can
always have more on-hand for backup. For an old
film/video guy like me though, this is rote behavior.
