Man, I must have had beginners luck with that. I went in and tried again
with the method I used the first time and got about a dozen failures in
a row.

So, I tried using the brush tool to paint in the tripod head so that
Photoshop had a blank slate to work with and that seemed to work better.

Generative fill is something akin to playing the slots, you can get a
lot of losers to have a winner.

Re: OT Photoshop 2024 help

2024-02-05 Thread Bill
I opened the image in Photoshop, drew quite loosely around the tripod
head with the lasso tool, then edit/generative fill and clicked fill
with nothing in the dialogue box.

If you do too tight a selection Photoshop will screw it up, it needs
surrounding detail to create the fill so you need to give it plenty of
elbow room. The selection I gave it was about the same size as the globe.

My understanding is that generative fill in it's present form creates
everything at a maximum resolution of 1024x1024. The people who know
more than me seem to be using fixed size boxes at that size and then
doing multiple passes with generative fill with higher resolution images.

One of the things you might have received with your subscription is
access to Photoshop Beta which is the test bed for Photoshop, so new
features appear there and as they are perfected they then trickle into
Photoshop 24 as updates.

For example, the image I posted was done on Photoshop Beta version 25.0.0

Re: OT: Lightroom naming help

2023-12-08 Thread Stanley Halpin
I won’t claim to be an expert on this. I use LR Classic, currently at ver
13.0.1. My current images and catalog are on my computers HD, and backed up on
external HDs. I keep older images on external HDs.

LR (not LR Classic) is web based. You can put images onto your computer HD, but
the working assumption is that they are stored in the Adobe cloud. The editing
tools on LR are different and seem less useful IMHO than those in LR Classic. I
think LR would be great for someone mostly using their phone as a camera.

I sometimes use LR when traveling, and then transfer the images to my computer
at home and import them into LR Classic.
That is a complicated not very useful workflow, and so I have started either
talking my computer with me when I travel, or I wait to review/edit/post any
images untilI am back home. (My one computer is a 2021 MacBook Pro; when at
home it connects to a 27” monitor.)

My basic monthly subscription includes LR, LR Classic, Photoshop, some other
Adobe stuff, and some online storage in the Adobe Cloud. I have no idea the
pricing options, but back when I shifted from LR v.6, the annual cost for the
bundle was about the same as I was paying each year to upgrade from 4 to 5 to 6…

Re: OT: Lightroom naming help

2023-12-08 Thread Toine
Yes Lightroom Classic (LrC) is what you want. Lightroom (Lr) needs a real
cloud subscription (1 Tb), It also works with Lightroom Mobile. And all 3
can work together in the cloud.
Lightroom Classic is the one, the rest is nice (and expensive)

For desktop editing you should get a subscription for Lightroom Classic with
Photoshop. This is the cheapest option for which get only 20 GB cloud storage.
You will be pleased with all the new features in Lightroom Classic compared to
Lightroom version 6.
I wouldn't look any further unless you only want to work in the cloud.

If it's all 4x6 prints, the low end Epson would probably be the best bet
(lowest cost).

The software bundled with the scanner should also be good enough.

The main thing is scanning takes time.

I have used ScanCafe for slides, no complaints.
But also I do have the Epson v 39 that has been mentioned, I use it mostly for
documents. But I think it is ok for old family prints. Tomorrow I’ll scan and
post an old family print which I’ll do at 100, 200, 300, 600, 1200, 2400, 3600…
We’ll see.

I have also had good results with ScanCafe.   They provided timely,
quality service exactly as I requested on my orders.  Over time, I've
had them process my complete holdings of slides and negatives plus a
some prints I didn't 'have time to scan myself.

Hi Henk, it was shot outside but in a very sheltered area. According to
the time stamps on the files, it took just over 3 minutes to photograph
the stack, so about one frame per second on average.
Automatic focus stack has very quickly become a must have feature for me
for a new camera. When the K1 replacement comes along (hopefully before
I've shuffled off) I'm really hoping they include it as a feature.

The Fuji lenses are superb, but the 80/2.8 stands out as exceptional.

thanks for looking and your kind comments are appreciated.

Re: OT: Fire in Phalaborwa

2023-09-20 Thread Alan Cole
Thanks Ann.
The community is assisting wherever needed but there are a lot of political
undertones too. The Muni is claiming they did all sorts of things
whereas in fact they did very little. None of the Fire Engines were working
so the Mine fire teams had to be called in. The delay was IMO the main
cause of the extensive losses. Also, the water reservoir was depleted so
water pressure & flow from the hydrants was very low. Sadly, this is how
South Africa is land wide today.

Yesterday was a very hot day (40?C) in Phalaborwa with strong winds from
the west. A veld fire broke out to the West of the town & rapidly got of
control, jumping Spekboom Street on the western boundary & setting
several thatched roofed houses on fire including the iconic Elegant
Guest House. All available local firefighting services from the town
fire brigade & mines were on the scene &? a firefighting helicopter was
brought in from Tzaneen but It still took 10 hours to bring the fire
under control. 12 houses were totally destroyed & others damaged but
fortunately there was no loss of life. By far the worst disaster in
Phalaborwa in the 47 years I have been here. Much cooler today but the
air is still filled with smoke. I felt it would be ghoulish to take
photos but you can find some on the internet if you look.

I'm glad you're okay Alan, it sounds like they had quite a fight on their
hands getting it under control.

We've been fortunate to only deal with the smoke blowing in from distant
wildfires living in Washington and now Detroit.  I hope this one was an
anomaly for Phalaborwa.

It’s been a bad few years for a lot of people, I’m sorry to hear it’s been your

I agree with Larry’s comment about ghoulishness.

Bon courage.

Re: OT Time machine

Hard drives are relatively cheap. IF Time Machine is having a problem,
get a new drive and start afresh. Save the old drive.

I kinda winced when I read that, Dave. ;-) You really need to leave
Time Machine alone to manage its own files. Many snapshots are
dependent on earlier data being there to be coherent. Normally it
clears space automatically as it needs room for new backup snapshots.

Sometimes the best thing to do with a malfunctioning Time Machine is
format the drive and restart TM using it. Basically, just reset and
start again. Of course you lose all the backups until now so you are
taking a risk, but just take care for the first few days until you
have a full and complete backup and a snapshot or two on the disk and
you should be good to go.

Re: OT Time machine

2023-05-13 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Dave,

I couldn't say whether you've mucked things up without the machine in front of
me to do some analysis, but perhaps these links on Time Machine backup
management might help:

https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/if-the-time-machine-backup-disk-is-full-mh15137/mac
(Note that El Capitan is too old to be included in the specific instructions
that this page lists for, but most of the instructions for all the High Sierra
to current Ventura versions of macOS are pretty much the same; one can make the
assumption that TM on El Capitan isn't much different.)

https://www.macworld.com/article/673089/what-to-do-when-time-machine-backup-is-full.html

http://www.creativetechsupport.com/help/mac/transfer/timemachine/full.html

In general, it is not a good idea to manipulate the internals of a Time Machine
backup manually (or any backup system, for that matter). When you do, you
should do it in the very specific ways recommended in the links above. If a
backup volume is getting too full, the best thing to do is to disconnect the
old volume and archive it, add a new volume, and assign that to Time Machine.

For example, I have a 1T internal drive and a 1T Time Machine volume connected
to my system. I set up Time Machine such that it excludes my photography files
(LR catalog folder and original files - those are managed on and backed up to a
completely different set of external volumes which I consider to be much more
efficient and robust than the automated TM backup system). When the 1T Time
Machine volume is approaching 95% full, before TM starts deleting the oldest
files, I disconnect it from the system and mark it with the date I removed it
from the system. I then connect another 1T volume that I've reformatted and
assign it to be the Time Machine volume, generate an entirely new backup on it.
When that one gets to the 95% full mark, I do the same … the 1T volume I swap
in is the original TM backup volume that I've reformatted and emptied.

It takes about five to six years of use for a TM backup to become full to that
point … I've only had to do this about three times … And any truly important
data that I want to keep forever (like financial data) I archive into a
completely independent archive system along with my photography files.

The used camera market is full of surprises. Someone has recently opened
a shop for second-hand analog cameras, here in town. One of his offers:

https://cameradealer.de/products/olympus-mju-ii-inkl-o

Had a look on ebay and they're going for around 250 to 300 euros. Got
one in my camera ancestors' shrine. Bought it new, years ago, for a bit
over 100 euros.

Are collectors actually that crazy?

Checking B, I get a price of just under $34,000-odd US for two M11
bodies, colour & monochrome, with current 35/1.4, 50/1.4 & 90/2.0
lenses, all new & warrantied. Buy that, some nice wider lens & a used
m3. Still less than half what is being asked for a used Chinese m3
copy.

Re: OT Larry & Godfrey - flooding

2023-03-13 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Thanks for asking! There's been flooding in some areas of Santa Clara County
but nothing in my immediate vicinity. It's actually forecasted to be a dry day
here, finally, at least until this evening.

Re: OT Larry & Godfrey - flooding

2023-03-13 Thread Larry Colen
I'm fine at the moment. At the peak the river in my back yard only rose about
"halfway to scary", the highest I saw was 12 feet. Earlier this year it was up
to about 19 or 20. The heaviest rain we've seen in the past week was about five
inches overnight.

I do have one friend I haven't heard from who lives on the edge of the
evacuation zone down in Pajaro.

I've got a collection of snaps on my phone starting 12/31 when my neighbor lost
their back deck, it turns out the river was also about 12' above normal then

https://photos.app.goo.gl/3ukBdSM3T17gEcXFA

The timing is kind of a pain in the ass because the company I work for is
moving to Riverside (about 400 miles south) and we do our first load tomorrow,
it's supposed to rain heavily today, and there was a whole bunch of work around
the house I really wanted to take care of.

Re: OT Laptops and photo editing

2023-03-08 Thread David J Brooks
Thanks Godfrey, thats pretty much what i was looking for. I may just go
with a good ipad, lot cheaper than macbooks, as a secondary device and
emergency computer should the desktop ever fail, until i can replace said
desktop,

I have lots of backup drives.:-)

I am quite comfortable with LR and have used it since version 1. Looks like
a free version is available for ipads.

Either way.

It's generally more convenient for me to set up Mail for each of my accounts,
no matter what service they're hosted with, on my iPad/iPhone and on my Mac as
well; either option is easily available.

> - will the ipad support firefox

There is a Firefox browser available on iPadOS, but I have never used it. I'm
happy enough with Safari as an internet browser.

Again, you can use a Gmail specific app, or you can create a Gmail account in
Mail. Your choice.

On macOS, the functionality of manipulating directory structure on local or
external storage is handled by the Finder. On iOS and iPadOS, the Files app
allows users to do the same, in a somewhat more specific (and manual) manner;
file system manipulation functionality is built into apps on these operating
systems to manage their private, secure directory storage in a more automated
manner.

The Files app is included with any current installation of iOS and iPadOS, and
it can be obtained free of charge from the App Store with any iPhone/iPad as
well. A screenshot of the Files app listing on the App Store:
https://www.flickr.com/gp/gdgphoto/o3ZQXQ905s

Files can be used to create a directory structure per whatever your needs might
be, either locally on an iPad or iPhone, or on external or iCloud storage.
(Yes, you can connect an external drive to iPad/iPhone presuming you have the
correct cable and/or adapters for your devices.) Since I do my photo
organizational work on my macOS system, and use the iPhone/iPad for photo work
in the field on a rather more casual basis, I have not set up a photo directory
structure that mimics my macOS system directory structure but it's certainly
possible (and easy) to do so. Here's what Files shows of my iPad Pro 11"
directory structure at present: https://www.flickr.com/gp/gdgphoto/0310mtvb53

As you can see, the default folder organization is being defined by the apps I
have installed and use. I can easily define another directory tree for photos,
either locally or on iCloud or external drives.

Inside an app like Photos, you organize photos into Albums to achieve the same
thing from a use perspective. I generally use SnapSeed for quick edits … it's
fast and easy. For more extensive work Photos used in conjunction with Raw
POWER is an excellent image editor and so is Affinity Photo. Both Raw POWER and
Affinity Photo run on iPadOS, iOS, and versions are available for macOS as well
if you want to use the same software on all your systems.

I generally use Lightroom Classic to do my photo work on macOS, mostly since
I've been using it since it went to Public Beta 2 or something like that in
2005. I haven't used the mobile version of it at all. When I do work on the
iPad or iPhone, I move the original and the finish files to my Mac and bring
them into Lightroom Classic for management and, occasionally, additional work.

Yes, that’s on my iPhone, iPad and Mac mini. The Files app came pre-installed
on all my platforms. I don’t know if it’s on the App Store- I don’t see why
not, but just make sure you get the one by Apple not by Vlad Yabloko.

Not sure what you need on the folders question, although I do hope you
have your photos backed up to at least a couple of external drives in
case your desktop goes toes up. That said, there's a ton of options for
storing and manipulating photos on an iPad. I think Godders uses a
combination of apps along with the Apple Photos software, for example. I
have Lightroom Mobile and the Pshop for iPad app, so I can sync up with
my desktop easily. Seems like you mentioned wanting to use more up to
date versions of both Lr and Ps, so the mobile versions might be the way
 to go.
Maybe not the clarity you hoped for.
