Man, I must have had beginners luck with that. I went in and tried again with the method I used the first time and got about a dozen failures in a row. So, I tried using the brush tool to paint in the tripod head so that Photoshop had a blank slate to work with and that seemed to work better.

I opened the image in Photoshop, drew quite loosely around the tripod head with the lasso tool, then edit/generative fill and clicked fill with nothing in the dialogue box. If you do too tight a selection Photoshop will screw it up, it needs surrounding detail to create the fill so you need
