Re: [Phono-L] The M Electric that got away... M topworks on eBay?
Greetings Andy: Did Edison say that? What a genius ! ! ! I had used the reproduction M parts on other restorations for fellow collectors but a few hours on a lathe and a vertical mill are all that are needed to make most Edison parts. I just made the double belt pulley which required new formed cutting tools for the leather belt crowns and other custom curved surfaces. This time I won't loose them in case I ever have to make more parts again. One other M part was missing from the box after 44 years and that was the solid brass mandrel and steel mandrel shaft with pulley so I will have to make those also. Making these parts tells me a lot about why Edison phonographs cost so much. The 0.625 x 100 tpi flame hardened mandrel shaft thread is fun... BTW - I hope someone on this list got the M topworks on eBay last month. It would be nice to know that it went to someone who both appreciates it and will put it onto a machine correct for it. Yes, Martin is still in the needle business. But he is apparently VERY busy, as well. Not the easiest man to get a hold of. He has moved since his old Amerola Graphic days. Yes, how strange, 3 or 4 years ago he sent a bulk mailing around saying that he was starting up the Amberola Graphic again, asked me to send in my subscription fee and promised he would start getting them out on a more timely basis, then as you say, the elusive fellow disappeared from site, never cashed the check, and never followed up on his promise to start up the Amberola Graphic again. Now you say he is still in the Needle business. I realized that the guy is a one man show, but you have to fulfill your promises, and if you don't, why in the world would you buy needles from him? I don't hold a grudge against the guy mind you, he was a trailblazer in our hobby as far as offering a very informative and interesting collectors quarterly that you looked forward to receiving, its just that something obviously went very very wrong towards the end, and has never been the same since. There was no follow up, no apologies, for failures to keep your word, it just did not sit very w ell with many many collectors, even until this day. - Original Message - From: phonop...@aol.com To: phono-l@oldcrank.org Sent: Friday, April 16, 2010 8:20:04 AM GMT -05:00 US/Canada Eastern Subject: Re: [Phono-L] Steel needle manufacturer?? I don't know about Texas, but in California checks are only good for 6 months. If not cashed by then they are void at the bank. This Bryan guy sounds like he's not the greatest businessman. Re: [Phono-L] Steel needle manufacturer??
I called him on the phone after the mailing to ask him where he got his needles and how he was doing. He said all his investments went bad so he could no longer do the Graphic or the needles, and his best friend died and some other bad things had happened to him. His vintage car he had had since he was young that was his daily driver got totaled. He said it had taken him a year to get over all these things and he was now going to catch up on the needle orders and continue with the Graphic. I waited a year and my check for the needles was not cashed so I figured he had changed his mind. After that nothing else was heard from him until he started to sell needles on eBay.
