I’m happy with our old HP OfficeJet 550. Its paper tray is big enough for a lot
of copies, its four ink tanks have a long lifetime, and it prints pretty fast.
It was sold to me as an alternative to a laser printer, and I think we’ve done
well with it.
We’ll see how it does with the cheaper ink

I never saw a mention of that on their site. Maybe I missed it. Thanks.

$300 is the used price. That's a $1000+ printer new. I would be scared
of a used printer. The one you get might have a couple million prints
on it.
I wouldn't recommend to most people to get the same printer I have
unless they have a heavy print load. I just used it as a good example

My printer is $59.95+$5.49 shipping for a black high yield (18,000
pages) genuine xerox cartridge, non-refill.
$28.00 for a low yield cart (9,000 pages)
If I wanted after market, I could get all 4 high yield cartridges (1
black + 3 color) for $85. Refills could probably be had for less than
I need a new printer but I don't have $300 for it!

13,000ish for each color.
It sounds like you are looking to do photo work with your printer. If
you want something that looks like a photo then you don't want any laser
printer. Laser printers print too crisp. You need something that will
allow inks or dyes to run together a little bit.
That's what I'm good for just a quickie!
I was thinking exactly what you suggested. I'll just walk over to cvs for
photos.

The 1430 is a Pigment instead of Dye and as such they tend to be more
expensive per page.

I wasn't aware of that. Educate me. How so?

The artisan 1430 is designed for art reproduction and high quality
graphics.
At 300 it is the least expensive of the professional print options. And it
has the ability to do 11x19. Anything better jumps by 200 or more.

Sure, but you would save money across the board on refills so my
argument still stands. You HAVE to consider total cost of ownership
with printers or you can loose serious money.
At the place that I used to work they spent $90,000 on purchasing toner
for 15 printers because the accountant
Make sure to compare the cost per page. Most low and mid range laser
printers have relatively high costs per page when compared to other
printers.
For instance, when I was last in the market for a printer, Most of the
printers I was pricing had toner cartridges that cost about $50-$70
each.

.duh, print?
Sarcasm aside, mostly text docs with some photographs.
What I would really like to find is a wide format (13 in) with good
reviews. Found a couple of HPs but w/ so-so reviews.

Well for wide format/photos I would have to say the Epson Artisan 1430 is
about the best you will get. However, it will kill with ink you if you use
it up doing text docs.
For black and white, most any of the current 100$ range or fewer printers
is perfect. Doc printing is really simple and easy
which Brothers would you recommend (for color).

(I) have switched to "Brother" exclusively (3 lasers, 1 inkjet and a
ADS-2000 scanner. They all have performed flawlessly with no jams.
Inkjets SUCK if you don't use them consistently. The latent ink in the
heads and tubes dry out and trash the printer. If ever I decide (I)
need color again,
What are you doing with it?
