Well, I'm ruinning a 1400c/166 on 64 megs of RAM. How does OS 8.6 compare to OS 8.1
in terms of speed, memory usage, stability, etc. Up to this point I've just simply
accepted OS 8.6 as the pinnacle for my PB, but now I'm starting to wonder.

Hi,
When installing 8.5, virtual memory is automatically
configured (just like 9.x). If you need 8.6, then
maybe attempt a partition. If not, 8.1 is best.
Leave OS9 for the G3 series, and X for the G4.
I did a Teoma search for partition powerbook driver.
You'll see what I mean, or not.

Interesting.
I've *always partitioned my hard drives, even if there was only one
partition.

Does your back-up partition have a system folder - and
if it does - have you experienced any problems? On the
Teoma.com search site, I found that some problems had
been noted. The search term used was partition
powerbook driver.

Only on the 140 did I have a problem, and perhaps that was because the drive

Brian,
Reloading a system, or upgrading to a new system, requires the updating of the hard
disk driver first. It is automatically done by an easy install usually, but not
always. I was a helpdesk representative and running hdsc setup before installing a
system usually worked to get a new
Thanks, for the advice. I got to that step after alot of fumbling around, trying to
remember all the thyings I've forgotten about this type of thing. It's back on OS 8.1
now, and running without any problems whatsoever.
When I installed OS 9, I watched it, and did see the installer updating
What I would strongly advise against is partitioning a
drive as I did: (1.) 8.6, and (2.) 9.1 with the
semi-automatic 9.1 HD driver update - I thought at the
time that it could be a mistake.
Now it seems the HD is quite sick.

PS: just what options do you use in HD SC?

Dang, you have to ask what I was doing at 3 in the morning, don't you? I remember
using the update drivers selection and eventually i initialized the hard drive. But
it was late, and I was sleepy, and you get the idea.
On a new note, I purchased OS 8.5, which should be on the way here now when

IMHO, OS 8.5 was a horrible OS. The 8.5.1 update fixed all bugs. 8.6
does that one better. Highly recommended!

First of all, a mention about my previous PB5300 problem:
Thanks to all for the help and advice. Many ideas with much merit. In the end,
