THE WEEKEND NEWSLETTER
The Power of NBC News on Cable 24/7...MSNBC.
Saturday March 1, 2003- Sunday March 2, 2003

SATURDAY night MSNBC investigates "Prostitution in America". Beginning with MSNBC
Investigates: Busted in the Big Easy, MSNBC takes you inside the New Orleans police
department (just in time for Mardi Gras), which has had one of the worst reputations
in America.
And SUNDAY, pour yourself a cup of tea and sit down for an afternoon of
"Royal" programming. Starting at noon eastern, MSNBC takes you inside the lives of
Grace Kelly, Princess Diana and Jackie Onassis.
Then at 8p eastern, we're airing NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC EXPLORER: ON THE FRONTLINES, as
EXPLORER correspondent Michael Davie joins sailors and marines aboard the amphibious
warship USS Tarawa, which has been deployed to the Persian Gulf, as they engage in
intense combat training. Then following at 10pm, join MSNBC for MSNBC REPORTS: THE
NEXT WAR, and see what America's soldiers are facing, and how well they're prepared to
face it.

Enjoy the weekend. Here is a look at the full documentary schedule for
Saturday and Sunday on MSNBC.

SATURDAY, MARCH 1
6AM ET
HEADLINERS & LEGENDS: PRINCESS DIANA
With a storybook wedding, Diana Spencer became one of the most famous women in the
world. She was a radiant style setter and a courageous beacon for charity and giving.
But behind the glamour was a woman in private turmoil - a cheating husband, her own
affairs and battles with an eating disorder. In this hour special discover the legend
we only thought we knew.

7AM ET
HEADLINERS & LEGENDS: GRACE KELLY
Grace Kelly was a dream come true. She was known as one of the most beautiful women in
the world, a gifted performer and a princess. Yet Grace Kelly's life was not always
the fairytale everyone imagined.

6PM ET
NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC EXPLORER: MAN'S BEST FRIEND
We begin with a segment called "Top Dogs" where Explorer follows the engaging stories
of some very different dogs and their handlers as competition heats up in the canine
world's ultimate contest - the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. Then, in the harsh,
windswept deserts of Arabia, descendants of the nomadic Bedouin maintain the
time-honored tradition of hunting with salukis, an ancient breed of lithe,
lightning-fast hounds. And in the last of three segments we team up with "Rescue
Dogs." Clever canines search the wreckage of the bombed federal building in Oklahoma
City for missing people using an extraordinary combination of scent ... and
sensibility.
Boyd Matson hosts.

8PM ET
MSNBC INVESTIGATES: BUSTED IN THE BIG EASY
The New Orleans police department has had one of the worst reputations in America.
Once known for its corruption and scandals, the department is reorganizing in hopes of
turning things around. Ironically, in a city best known for celebrating its vices,
it's the vice squad that is leading the way with a record number of arrests.
Hosted by John Seigenthaler.

9PM ET
MSNBC INVESTIGATES: HOLLYWOOD VICE
Now we head to Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles. Now's your chance to ride along
with the vice cops who are losing the fight to clean up the streets. And now they've
got a new player complicating things... the internet.
John Seigenthaler hosts.

10PM ET
MSNBC INVESTIGATES: RED LIGHT SURVIVORS
We take to the streets with women (and men) who say they've "chosen" prostitution as a
career opportunity. Why do they put themselves at risk for disease, or attack... or
worse? Maybe the fact that it's a $15 billion dollar a year industry has something to
do with it?
John Seigenthaler hosts.

1PM ET
HEADLINERS & LEGENDS: PRINCESS DIANA

2PM ET
HEADLINERS & LEGENDS: JACKIE ONASSIS
Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis was an introverted child who grew up to capture the
world's imagination and become an American legend. Famous for closely guarding her
privacy, she always remained a bit of a mystery. More than an attractive political
wife, she had a sharp wit, strong sense of duty as a mother and courage under the most
trying conditions. This is the story of one of the most beloved and fascinating women
of our time.

As of this writing police in Virginia are stopping white vans, searching for a
killer who shot a man to death at a gas station in Fredericksburg. If he is linked to
the spree killings that have terrified people in the Washington, DC suburbs over the
past week this would be the eight victim. On SATURDAY, we'll devote our primetime
programs to cases like this, that have been horrifying or mysterious, or both.
Then on SUNDAY, at 8PM ET we premiere NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC EXPLORER: NUCLEAR
TERRORISM: BLINDING HORIZONS. Osama bin Laden and his al Qaeda terrorist organization
have been trying to obtain nuclear weapons for almost a decade. Now, special
correspondent Peter Bergen, author of the New York Times best-seller Holy War, Inc.
goes back to Kabul to look at how real the threat is. Can bin Laden threaten not only
the United States, but the whole world with nuclear terrorism?
And we have some "lighter fare" for those of you looking in that direction.

THE WEEKEND PRIMETIME NEWSLETTER
AMERICA'S NEWSCHANNEL MSNBC
Saturday October 5, 2002- Sunday October 6, 2002

We have a weekend filled with some of our most-loved documentaries... as well as two
premieres we hope will catch your eye.
Saturday primetime is our subtle tribute to Dr. Quincy with six hours of the
best of our forensic sciences series. If you love real-life crime-solving, this is a
perfect night to curl up on the couch.
And then on Sunday, our two weekend premieres. At 8pm it's NATIONAL
GEOGRAPHIC EXPLORER: DISASTERS!, where we head into the center of the storm to see
just how deadly tornadoes and hurricanes can be and why we can't seem to do a whole
lot to protect ourselves. At 10pm MSNBC INVESTIGATES: SOARING SPIRITS. Don't let
that title fool you, these cheerleading champs are some of the fiercest competitors
out there. We'll follow along with several girls battling to be the best.

Have a great weekend. Here's a look at the whole schedule:

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 5

MSNBC INVESTIGATES: CRIME SCENE DETECTIVES
The forensic scientists in this program are the real life version of Dr.

one said learning was easy!
Hosted by John Seigenthaler.

9PM ET

women... they -love- what they do.
Hosted by John Seigenthaler

10PM ET
MSNBC INVESTIGATES: SEX CRIME DETECTIVES
Can you imagine how difficult it must be to hunt a serial rapist? Investigators
always say they have to be able to get into the mind of the criminal. In this
program, the Nashville sex crimes unit goes after a rapist who's been on the loose for
six years, accused in the attacks of half a dozen women. We'll see how they take
their years of experience into account as they hunt him down.

In August of 2001, one month before the attacks on the World Trade Center and
the Pentagon, MSNBC completed a documentary: "Target Manhattan." The program was
inspired by a federal study, and detailed a series of events leading to the
annihilation of the World Trade Center.
When the project was finished, a heated internal debate began: Was the idea
too far-fetched? Might it give would-be-terrorists the germ of a horrifying idea?
Within a month, both questions became moot, and we opted not to show the program last
fall, out of respect for the victims of September 11th and their families. Now,
however, a new question looms: how do we prevent something like this from happening
again?
Once again we've gathered our experts to talk about the scenario we had played
out... and the chilling predictions it makes about the future. MSNBC INVESTIGATES:
TARGET MANHATTAN, airs SUNDAY at 10pm ET and we remind you, in advance, the scenario
featured in this hour is hypothetical.

Lions and tigers and bears... almost. This week it's sharks and dogs... one

The bloody, brutal world of dog-fighting. It's alive and well all over this

around. Wonder why so many people are getting attacked these days? Look no further
than the dog-fighting ring and the puppy mills that are thriving underground.
SATURDAY AT 8PM ET, check out "MSNBC INVESTIGATES: MEAN DOGS: BORN OR BRED?" In this

I'm sure you're a perfectly law-abiding citizen, but let's just pretend you got sent

sentence, in exchange for hard-time in a prison boot camp? That's right... it's just
like what you know of the military, and you get a two-year term in exchange. Sounds
like a deal to me. It's an option many young men and women are offered in some
states. In this program we get bossed around by some of the toughest prison guards on

MSNBC INVESTIGATES: THE RUNAWAYS
The producer of this hour spent 3 weeks on the streets of Portland, Oregon documenting

THE WEEKEND PRIMETIME NEWSLETTER
AMERICA'S NEWSCHANNEL MSNBC
Friday JUNE 21st- Sunday JUNE 23rd, 2002

***HIGHLIGHTS***

The highlight of our weekend programming comes on Sunday night when Brian
Williams presents "SUMMIT FOR A CURE," a live, two-hour program brought to you from
The Cleveland Play House, adjacent to the Cleveland Clinic, one of the country's
leading heart hospitals. We will talk about the latest developments in the search for
cures and treatments for cancer, heart and brain disease. We will also explore the
role of genetics, "wonder" drugs and precision instruments that make the field of
medicine so fascinating. In addition to some of the people leading the way in the
medical field (check out the panel listed below or on our website at
http://www.msnbc.com/news/758940.asp?0si=), Bob Dole, Fran Drescher and Christopher
Reeve will join us. And we'll witness the latest advances in cardiac surgery as we
watch a valve repair operation as it takes place during the program.

THE WEEKEND PRIMETIME NEWSLETTER
AMERICA'S NEWSCHANNEL MSNBC
Friday JUNE 14TH- Sunday JUNE 16TH, 2002

***HIGHLIGHTS***

We have two premieres for you this weekend from the world of primetime
documentaries. The first airs on SUNDAY AT 8PM ET. It is NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC
EXPLORER: AFGHAN GIRL: BEHIND THE SEARCH. It's the story behind one of the most
well-known photographs ever taken-- that of an Afghan girl, a refugee in the camps
along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border in the early 1980s. With the aid of modern
forensic technology, photographer Steve McCurry is able to relocate her decades later.
We'll take you into the scientific world of identification verification to see how it
happened.
And at 10PM ET SUNDAY we bring you MSNBC INVESTIGATES: AMNESIA. This program
captures the struggles of several women who are each trying to deal with their new
lives-- where they are unable to remember some of the past, and struggle to make new
memories. One young college student is facing a particularly difficult battle after a
heart attack. She is often unable to remember what she is doing, while she is doing
it. We see her in the bathroom, with a mirror covered with notes reminding her to
brush her teeth. Her mother then comes in to coach her on how to do it. Another
woman comes home from a family gathering at a restaurant and opens the refrigerator
wondering what to make for dinner, forgetting that she has just eaten. This program
is fascinating and frustrating and highlights just how complicated brain injuries and
disease can be.

Now, here's a look at the whole schedule:

FRIDAY, JUNE 14
6PM
THE ABRAMS REPORT
The search for the missing girl in Utah continues... Marc Klaas, who lived through
this ordeal when his daughter Polly was kidnapped and murdered, sounds off on the
Elizabeth Smart case...Tonight on the Abrams Report.

7PM
HARDBALL WITH CHRIS MATTHEWS
Feds investigating Martha Stewart for insider trading...Could the domestic queen's
empire be in jeopardy? Chris Matthews tackles the issue tonight, on Hardball.

8PM ET
THE NEWS WITH BRIAN WILLIAMS
A special preview into the 30th Anniversary of Watergate, with an inside look at the
infamous Nixon tapes...Tonight, on The News with Brian Williams.

9PM ET
MSNBC INVESTIGATES: CAPTURED: COPS CAUGHT ON TAPE
>From unbelievable acts of violence, to incredible acts of heroism. From everyday
>verbal abuse, to an officer's abuse of power-- we catch it all on camera. This
>disturbing documentary looks at the real lives of cops. The relatively new use of
>video cameras in patrol cars not only helps protect the police from false
>accusations, but it catches the unbelievably brazen acts of officers who know they
>are being taped! We warn you in advance, some of the video in this hour is
>disturbing.

10PM ET
MSNBC INVESTIGATES: TERROR IN NORTH HOLLYWOOD
February 28, 1997. A Bank robbery quickly turns into an all-out gun battle between
two suspects and an army of police officers. But it's the cops who are outgunned. In
this chilling documentary we take you back to that day, in North Hollywood, where the
cops tell us of the sheer terror of being in the middle of a battle the suspects
intended to fight to the death. For those who lived to tell their stories, will life
ever be the same? And why, after this 42 minute assault, were the cops left to defend
themselves, accused of committing murder! The action in this program may seem like a
scene out of a movie-- but it's horrifyingly real.

SATURDAY, JUNE 15

8PM ET
HEADLINERS & LEGENDS: JOHN GOTTI
The 61 year old murderous mobster know as both the "Dapper Don" and the "Teflon Don"
died earlier this week of throat cancer at a federal prison hospital in Springfield,
Mo. We take a look at his rise to leader of the Gambino crime family, murdering along
the way but never far from the spotlight. You can read more about his life and legacy
at http://www.msnbc.com/news/764795.asp

9PM ET
MSNBC INVESTIGATES: CAPTURED: THE HITMAN TAPES
Murder for hire. You might be surprised to see just how often it occurs. And we're
not talking about mobsters involved in organized crime. The people plotting these
crimes are average Americans... a pharmacist, a community leader, a housewife, even a
preacher-- all making cold-blooded, calculated decisions to have someone killed.
You'll see how each of these cases unfolds, because the plots have all been caught on
tape.

10PM ET
MSNBC INVESTIGATES: CAPTURED: MURDER FOR HIRE
In this second installment of one of our favorites (and yours) we show you what could
easily be auditions for the amateur hour in the murder-for-hire business. You'll meet
people who defy all common sense to find someone to do a job they can't bring
themselves to do. What is captured

***HIGHLIGHTS***

Fans of MSNBC documentaries-- you are in for a treat. We are premiering five
new docs over the next week or so and though we admittedly are a little biased...
THEY'RE REALLY GOOD!
Let's start with this weekend. On Sunday night we roll out MSNBC
INVESTIGATES: THE OBSESSED. This program documents the lives of people with a
particular form of obsessive-compulsive disorder. It's called hoarding. This brain
illness causes people to irrationally collect things, all kinds of things-- from
chewed gum to old newspapers to garbage-- these people just can't throw things out!
Also on Sunday we have the latest premiere from National Geographic Explorer
called CLONES! This show dives head in to the cloning controversy that surrounds how
we might one day resurrect extinct species, grow replacement organs, and even make
duplicates of ourselves.

HERE'S YOUR EARLY WARNING: MAKE NO PLANS FOR SUNDAY JUNE 9th.
In case you didn't know, being a kid these days ain't what it used to be. For
more than a year we have been working on a full night of new programs that make Marsha
and Greg Brady's world look like science fiction. Beginning at 8pm ET on June 9 we
premiere "13," "REAL BOYS" and "INVISIBLE PEOPLE." More details next week but this
will give you a quick overview.

MSNBC SPECIAL: 13- MSNBC gave digital cameras to four 13 year old girls who spent
several months telling us what it is like to be a teenaged girl, in their own words,
through their experiences.

MSNBC SPECIAL: REAL BOYS: With the help of a leading researcher we get a unique
insight into the lives of young boys and a primer on how to understand them, how to
talk to them, and how to be there for them when they need us most.

MSNBC INVESTIGATES: INVISIBLE PEOPLE: Of the half million kids living on the streets
in America, thousands have made their way to Hollywood, where they live on discarded
food, and an endless supply of cheap heroin. One of the ones we hang out with is even
trying to raise a newborn.

NOW, ONTO THIS WEEKEND

FRIDAY, MAY 31

THE ABRAMS REPORT
Is FBI Director Robert Mueller the right man right now? Dan Abrams looks for the
truth and finds out why some say the agency's 8th Director should resign. Tonight on

Has Al Qaeda smuggled missiles onto American soil? Chris Matthews gets the story
straight from the reporter who broke it, tonight on Hardball with Chris Matthews.

on The News With Brian Williams.

9-11PM ET
MSNBC SPECIAL: BETRAYAL: THE TRUTH ABOUT ACQUAINTANCE RAPE
More than four out of every five rapes are committed by someone the victim knows.
We'll examine this growing problem through a series of extraordinary first-hand
accounts.

11PM ET
MSNBC INVESTIGATES: TO LOVE AND TO KILL
By all accounts, the couple featured in this program lived a double life-- as the
loving newlyweds who visited family at the holidays, and the twisted pair who kept
slaved and then killed them. This is a classic program from our Crime Files.

SATURDAY, JUNE 1
8PM ET
MSNBC INVESTIGATES: LITTLE BOY LOST
It's a search for the truth behind a family tragedy-- a child dangerously out of

And a ground-breaking defense - could this child's severe injuries have been self
inflicted?

9PM
MSNBC INVESTIGATES: DEATH ROW DIARY
Floyd Allen Medlock was just 19 when confessed to murdering a 7 year old girl. He was
executed after a decade on Oklahoma's death row. In his last three days there, he
recorded a riveting video journal, which his family has given exclusively to MSNBC.

she is serving her sentence for the murder.

***MSNBC INVESTIGATES: PARTYING 101*** PREMIERE
Andrea sits with books and notebooks in front of her, crashing for her final in a few
hours. She's stressed out and isn't sure she's going to pass. WHY SHOULDN'T SHE
BE??? SHE'S SITTING IN A CROWDED BAR WITH THE MUSIC BLARING AND BEER DRIPPING ALL OVER

enormous role in the lives of college students.

9PM
MSNBC INVESTIGATES: A DRUG CALLED ECSTASY
18 billion dollars...that's how much the US government spends each year fighting the
so-called "war on drugs." But while the government brags about how teen use of
marijuana is down, the use of the designer drug "ecstasy" has doubled in the past five
years, according to the Partnership for a Drug Free America. We go inside rave clubs
that have sprung up all over the country to find out why this drug is so popular, what
it can do, and how kids who use it can be helped.

10PM ET
MSNBC INVESTIGATES: SEX, LAWS AND VIDEOTAPE

sex. But there's a multi-billion dollar sex industry that is alive and well in this
country... and it's legal.

11PM ET
MSNBC INVESTIGATES: RED LIGHT SURVIVORS
We go out on the streets with women (and men) who say they've "chosen" prostitution as
a career opportunity. Why do they put themselves at risk for disease, or attack... or
worse? Maybe the fact that it's a $15 billion dollar a year industry has something to
do with it?

THE WEEKEND PRIMETIME NEWSLETTER
FOR MSNBC, AMERICA'S NEWSCHANNEL
Friday May 17th- Sunday May 19th, 2002

***HIGHLIGHTS***

This weekend we have a special program premiering called "MSNBC INVESTIGATES:
DANGEROUS CROSSINGS." Our producer, David Roderick, spent three days ("though it
could easily have taken three hours") traveling through the desert with men known as
"coyotes" who are trying to smuggle migrants across the border from Mexico into the
United States while avoiding the watchful eye of the U.S. border patrol. The trip,
made thousands of times each year by illegals and their guides, can be treacherous.
It is quite common for people to die in the blistering desert heat as they try to make
it to America. The journey for David was an eye-opening and often scary experience.
Here's an excerpt from his travel journal:

JECUME
On the outskirts of Jecume the truck stopped and let Ismael and the migrants
out. Pepper and crew would head into town to pick up supplies. Jecume is one of the
few remote towns were drugs are transported across the border. It is a dangerous
place, as we were about to find out. Enroute to the town I used a satellite phone to
contact our associate producer Christina who would meet us in town. When we arrived
Victor Clark (a contact of mine), Ramon (his bodyguard), Victor (our Coyote friend)
and Christina were there to greet us and for a moment I let my guard down-- the wrong
thing to do! Alejandro and I bought two gallons of cold water in the neighborhood
grocery store and poured the entire contents over our heads to cool down. That water
tasted as good as champagne. Pepper asked permission for us to shoot some scenes in
the store and the shopkeeper agreed. We had just begun shooting when the door swung
open and an angry man began yelling at us to stop shooting... Within seconds the glass
door swung open and smashed, sending glass flying all over the sidewalk...he quickly
stormed off and returned minutes later wielding a pistol... I ducked through an open
door and entered someone's house. I tried frantically to call the police, and Ben (a
colleague)-- as if he could do anything from Arizona. I could hear Ty's voice (my
executive producer) "If you get in trouble, call in a chopper and get the hell out of
there." (Read more from David's journal at: http://www.msnbc.com/news/753280.asp)

Find out how David and his crew get out of this mess and what this whole
operation tells us about the security of America's southern border. "DANGEROUS
CROSSINGS" premieres Sunday at 10pm ET.

FRIDAY, MAY 17
6PM
THE ABRAMS REPORT
Investigating the pre 9/11 warnings...Republicans claim it's purely a political move
by the Democrats-but are they just doing their job? Hear from a terrorism expert and
a former FBI agent when MSNBC's Dan Abrams takes you inside the legal issues.

7PM
HARDBALL WITH CHRIS MATTHEWS
Reverend vs. Reverend...Al Sharpton & Jerry Falwell face off over the pre 9/11
warnings tonight when they play Hardball with Chris Matthews.

8PM ET
THE NEWS WITH BRIAN WILLIAMS

9PM ET
MSNBC INVESTIGATES: LOCKUP: THE CRIMINAL MIND
What should we do with people who have served their time, but who clearly remain a
danger to themselves and others? In California, the answer is often: Atascadero State
Hospital. It has become a more-or-less permanent home to more than a thousand of the
most violent murderers, child molesters and rapists-- men who have been forcibly
committed for psychiatric treatment. They have agreed to let cameras in the facility,
for the very first time, to let us have a glimpse of what it is like to live and work
in what could easily be one of the most dangerous places on earth.

10PM ET
MSNBC INVESTIGATES: DEADLY BEHAVIOR
They're all the rage on television these days: criminal profilers. In this program,
we go along with the real thing (who, by the way, hate the term "profiler") as they
follow some really twisted clues. We don't want to give away the mystery here, but if
you like the Hollywood version of these shows, you'll love the real thing.

11PM ET
THE NEWS WITH BRIAN WILLIAMS

12AM ET
MSNBC INVESTIGATES: RAMPAGE KILLERS
Just hours before he commits murder a killer sets up a videocamera to record why he's
about to take out his anger on people he doesn't even know. He then goes to a nearby
McDonald's where a woman is buying a Happy Meal for her kid and opens fire, killing
three people, including himself. Many more are injured. We always ask the same
question when we hear someone has gone on a rampage killing: "why?" Well, this man,
in a chilling recording, tells all.

SATURDAY, MAY 18
8PM ET
MSNBC INVESTIGATES: CRIMES CAUGHT ON TAPE
>From neighborhood hoaxes to convenience store hold-ups, we've got it all captured
