PC manufacturers/sellers are sure happy about this requirement, I'll
bet. Makes their sales #s go up.

Absolutely, but then again it makes sense, when emulating a machine at
CPU level, to have that emulated CPU running on its own core with a
usable amount of

If software didn't drive hardware upgrades, we'd have no reason to
upgrade from our XT's...

What; you've upgraded your XT and not told me next thing you'll be telling
me that these 5 1/4 disks I've been writing for you have been superseded!

If software didn't drive
look for the biggest discount you can get on a top-end non-Vista box (with
luck there should be some fire sales coming up).

Chet said I buy the 3 year extended warantee --
good thing since my last machine is crapping out on me after 2 years --
Here in the UK I would *never* buy extended warranty on *anything* - it's a
rip off!
And if I had a pc crap out after 2 years I'd return it as 'unfit for
purpose' under the sale
That's because the components are all made in China g

The good luck is that (I suspect) m$ must be subsidizing the hell
out of the vendors 'cause prices are at an ALL TIME LOW right now.

Heya Malcolm -
1. system box - Shuttle XPC SN41G2 V2. if you go with a V3, please note
the sound system is substandard but you get SATA drive interface, so
change out item 4 from ATA to SATA
2. 2 gig o ram
3. qty 2, 22 inch lcd screens, Viewsonic VG2230WM or equivalent - see
I'd love to put my own machine together as it'd be a neat experience
(and not hell, I hope!) but my worry is something said long ago: Dell,
Gateway, and the big dogs know what parts work well together due to all
of their RD work in best configuration, and little ol' me doesn't know
these
I now use NewEgg most of the time.
I like to build my own dev machines because I like to pick the
top-of-the-line components.
Same here(2x).
Asus motherboards are bulletproof. (my current system has been running
since early 2003 without ANY problems whatsoever)
Eh. I wouldn't say

I second that. I just bought one of this model screen and have a 17
Sony as my secondary, and I really love this Viewsonic wide screen.
The wide screen aspect is very nice in VFP, as you can have your
property sheet docked to
I'm in the market for getting a new developer workstation. Profox is
full of past threads discussing machine configs but as we all know, the
technology is changing so fast that many of these threads are
out-of-date even before they are finished.

I'm not much of a hardware guy, but I built one. I want to see what
other, more machine-savvy folks say about specs, but I'll say this:
stay the he|| away from f'ing TigerDirect. I

stay the he|| away from f'ing TigerDirect
In the past, I've had good success with TigerDirect's house-brand
workstations. Now it looks like they're pushing SystemMax.
I don't have any experience with TigerDirect's rebates but my experience

These are the worst I have ever encountered, by very, very far. They
made it virtually

For what it's worth.
I started putting my own machines together around '84. I didn't have
too much trouble with hardware or matching up to software until the late
90's. Now, it's just more trouble than it's worth. My last 4 machines
have been store bought and, yes, I buy the 3 year extended
PS: Just about anything sold for 800-1200 dollars now would be more than
enough for a good Dev workstation.
