Kurt,
First, I'm sorry for the problems you are having.
You could boot up with a Live CD of Ubuntu (or other Linux distribution)
and then see if Ubuntu could access your HD and then copy the files to a
USB Key, or to an FTP site.
If you don't already know how to boot to a Live CD of Ubuntu,
Download Knoppix, burn a boot CD, and boot from the CD. By
coincidence, the family computer that my younger daughter uses died
this morning. I booted it up with Knoppix, opened the disk volume, and
copied her homework from last night to another computer on the
network.

Wow - Cool - although, strangely enough - Apple inserted its OWN little
task in there to update (or CHECK for Updates) EVERY Tues. morning at
8:55am! I guess it figured it would make me happy and get the updates
before I got back to work at 9am! Well - believe me YOU - I am deleting

SpinRite is a great tool if you have to recover data from a disk whose
hard drive is failing. Note that it doesn't help if you just need to
recover deleted data from a good disk.

Ooops, further reading show that you already solved this problem. Enjoy
Steve Gibson's site (creator of SpinRite) it has some informative material
