Re: [PEDA] Assembly Drawing Instruction on TO 220

2002-12-16 Thread Guy Porritt

It's also worth specifying the pins to be bent around a certain radius
*away* from the neckdown; bending them too close, or allowing the
leads to bend naturally at the neckdown without a nice formed radius,
makes the swiny things fall off at the stress raiser caused by the sharp
bend, especially after being subjected to mechanical or thermal
stress

I've had so many of these leads fall off in service when myself or others
couldn't be bothered forming the bend smoothly, I always do it now for
important projects!

Hope this helps a bit

Good point. So much for informality ;)

I'd want to reverse the last two instructions. Once it's soldered, any
misalignment of the mounting will add stress to the solder joints when you
screw it down. By screwing it down first, you ensure that only residual
thermal stresses are left in the solder joints.

Re: [PEDA] Assembly Drawing Instruction on TO 220

2002-12-11 Thread Andrew Jenkins
Not sure that "formal" instructions are really necessary. My own informal isntructions
might go something like this:

1. Bend leads just past neckdown to 90 degrees.
2. apply heatsink compound to screw tab (underside of TO-220)
3. Insert component.
4. Solder component.
5. Attach using screw/nut

Just make sure that your footprint has an appropriate distance between pads and
heatsink screw hole.

I see your "footprint my (?might?) vary". That will probably lead to problems,
regardless of any formal treatment...

[PEDA] Assembly Drawing Instruction on TO 220

2002-12-11 Thread Michael Biggs
Does anyone have any formal assembly instructions for a voltage regulator
part in a TO-220 package that lays flat with the three pins are bent 90
degrees and inserted into board and the base on a heat sinking pad secured
by a screw and nut? I am curious to weather I should include a prepping
distance on the pins fro the assembler? I'm sure each assemblers process
might be different as well as my footprint my vary.
Any help?
Thanks
