I'd find this a bit surprising, since gerber is a pure graphics format and
doesn't have *any* hole commands. That is, gerber can include *graphics*
information that might be used by a designer to indicate a hole or slot,
but not actual slot information.

The terms "hole," "drill," "mill", and "slot" do not appear in the RS-274X
specification index and glossary.

There might be an *Excellon* command for slots, it would not surprise me
at all.
I actually meant the Excellon command G85 "Slot drilling".

Discuss the situation with your board shop to see how they want it
documented. Neither Gerber nor Excellon files have provision to show
slots or other non-circular holes.
Gerber does have a command for drilled slots, but Protel can't generate it.

Edi

You might place very small non-drillable holes (1 - 5 mil) as markers for
the corners or centers of the end radiuses - when the board shop sees
these tiny holes, they'll have to read your documentation, or contact you,
to find what you really want.

Hi John,

Our CNC programmers prefer it this way. Draw the exact slot on the
mechanical layer 1 and then place text inside the slot on the same layer -
something like "rout and remove".

Peter,

I like the idea of including unreasonably small holes to identify center
points of slots or cutouts because it serves as an additional reminder to
the fab house to read the notes. Too often they are checking many things
under time pressure and this prevents missing a note. I usually place one
at the center of each arc that makes up each shape (2 for a slot, 4 for a
rectangle, etc.
