Pressing enter should take you back to the beginning of the project and clear the selection, but another way of doing this is to just press the down or up arrow again. If you press the down arrow the selection will be cleared and your edit cursor will be right where the beginning of the

If the instrument track is selected, select a range and then use the Select/Split Notes dialog to set the note range. There are a bunch of options in there that should be self-explanatory. To ensure that the instrument track definitely has an insertion cursor, make sure there's an audio track
