I agree with Wolfgang in that there probably was an outstanding file lock on the .WIN file. The file lock would keep other programs from writing to the .WIN file, but it would allow programs to read from it. This is why you could copy it and why SMSQmulator said it was read-only. The reboot cleared the lock and all was well. The cause of the crash might be difficult to determine. Windows is not easy to troubleshoot. There is no truss or par trace capability built into the OS (at least not that I am aware of), so you can't look inside a process to see what is happening. I did some testing myself and I'm getting slightly different behavior. I'm running SMSQmulator 2.14. OS is Lubuntu (Linux swensont-ThinkPad-L430 3.13.0-74-generic #118-Ubuntu SMP). I created a director NFA3, put two files in it and then a symbolic link to another file: -rw-rw-r-- 1 swensont swensont 0 Dec 27 19:12 test2.txt -rw-rw-r-- 1 swensont swensont 0 Dec 27 19:12 test.txt lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 16 Dec 27 19:25 xx.txt -> ../NFA/nfa4.txt When I do a "wdir nfa3_" I see the following: test2.txt nfa4.txt test.txt It looks like it follows the symbolic link to get the linked file name. They will need to be scanned and then inserted into the document. I'm willing to pass on what I have done to someone else to continue the work, or jointly work on the project. Notice a couple of things about SMSQmulator 1.24. When I do the about (the question mark) it still shows as 1.23. On my Windows PC and my Linux system at work, 1.24 has an issue with Xchange. On my Linux system at home, it runs fine. When Xchange starts, it hangs after drawing a little bit of the menus. I'm going to do a little more testing to see what is going on. There should be a way to lower the resolution without doing a rescan. Please check out ImageMagick. It supports batch process of image files. It is portable and I've used it on both Windows and Linux. http://www.imagemagick.org/ There is a -density option so that dpi can be changed. I've been sitting out the conversations about Quanta, QL Today, etc, but I thought I would chime in here. When it comes to volunteer projects, we have to remember the old adage: You can take a horse to water, but you can't make him drink Having been on the Board of 4 non-profits, and know how hard it can be to push volunteers to get things done. For QL websites, we really have to wait for a volunteer to step up and do something. Geoff is right about needing a place for long form articles. At the moment, I use two QL websites; the QL forum for news and short discussions, and Dilwyn's site for downloads and basic QL information. I have not done any longer QL writing in a while, but if I did, there is not a single location for it. I'd probably host it on my website and point to it from the QL forums (I've done this some recent ZX81 work). Now, some have suggested that Quanta step up and fill some role, mostly an article oriented website, but they may not be able to find a volunteer to do that. I'm working a new website for a local Museum, but I'm so rusty with HTML stuff that it is a bit of a struggle and not very enjoyable. Eventually, someone will get frustrated enough and do it themselves. This might be enough of a catalyst that gets others involved. Until then all the gnashing of teeth will do nothing. I do admit until a few minutes ago, it had been years (8+) since I visited Geoff's web page. I did not know it had a news section. I've really only been focusing on one website for my QL news (ok, on the mailing list). I don't know if Geoff announced his news section on the QL forum. If he did, I missed it. So, if people to have long-form articles for the QL, don't just leave it sitting on your local system. Use the existing web sites that we do have. If you don't have a location to host it, ask the mailing list for someone who can. If we have enough authors writing new material, that might encourage someone to create a newsletter. Both QDOS and SMSQ/E (which is what QPC2 does), have the same look and feel to the operating system and almost all SuperBASIC code will work on both OS's. I also use Thunderbird and have been for about (checking oldest e-mail) ... Nov. 2007. Been working like a champ. Just remember to find out where the Thunderbird files are (mailbox, address book, etc) so you can back them up. I also use the add on that provides Calendar and task lists. It works the same for Windows, Mac and Linux. Another option is that some web browsers have an e-mail client built in. Before Thunderbird, I used Opera and it had an e-mail client. QDC should run in DOSBOX. I don't know if DOSBOX can address the USB floppy. It might just be a simple MOUNT command. That is one item that I did not test. I've tested 'print date$' on two systems (Windows XP and Linux) and got the same behavior. The local time is 1630 hrs and the SMSQmulator output is 02:30 (of the next day) That is a ten hour difference. This is +2 GMT. Not sure what time zone that is. What the error really means is that the file QLAY (which he is tying to execute) is not in the current directory. Without knowing what the current directory is, how could anyone know if this is an real error or not. Maybe he's in /home/bob and needs to be in /home/bob/qlay? Maybe the case in wrong and it should be Qlay or qlay or something like that. Again, not enough info to do anything with. Kind of like saying my car won't start and then nothing else. I just downloaded QLAY and tried it on my Lubuntu 12.4 system. I'm getting the same odd error that the user reported. I made sure that the file was executable, so I did a 'chmod 777 QLAY'. When I did './QLAY', I got the same no sure file or directory. The command 'strace ./QLAY' did not show much. Basically, an execve call was made and it returned ENOENT, which is the same as no such file or directory. There was an llseek system call that returned ESPIPE or Illegal seek. I've never seen Linux or Unix not find a file like that. The file system can see the file. I can chmod the file. I can cat the file. I can rename the file, but trying to execute it, the file can't be found. One suggestion is that the user download the source code and see if he can build it himself. I just tried it and had a number of compiler errors. If the user is not a C person, he may not get it to compile. Has anyone successfully compiled QLAY lately? The source code was last touched in 1999, so it might be a little rusty. Another option is for the user to try the DOS version using DOSBOX on Linux. DOSBOX is great for running old DOS software. I have reproduced the problem with Q-emulator. I get not enough memory when I try to attach a 1 GB QXL.win file. I set the QL to as much memory as I can and I still get the error. With an 800 MB QXL.win file, it attaches just fine. I'm thinking that 1 GB is hitting some boundary, meaning that the variable that handles the QXL.win file can't go as high as 1 GB. You might try it with 999 MB and see if that works. This would point to a boundary issue. My question is why would you want such a large QXL.win file? I maintain a website for two different local non-profits. Unless you make a concerted effort to make updates every month or so, it is fairly easy for sites to get stale (I'm guilty of that myself). Who ever maintains the site needs to set a schedule (similar to a newsletter) and update the site with something. If someone knows a fair bit about web programming, I'm sure update could be sent in via e-mail and automatically posted. But this all takes knowledge or money to hire someone. Depending on the author agreement, publishers may only have a limited rights to a published work. After the time has expired, the rights go back to the original author. There's been some QL software like this. For Image Use, Museums and Libraries usually charge for images from their collections. The Museum of Local History (where I am the President) does this and we generate operating revenue from this. For the Jan Jones book, the illustrations might be done by someone else and can easily be redone. They were fairly simple, but not something that an OCR software could handle. I finally got around to testing this. I created a test spreadsheet using the Psion Abacus for DOS. I saved the file as a transfer file (.abt). Changed the extension to _abt, and moved it onto a directory that Q-emulator has access to. I got into Xchange and Abacus. I loaded the file via the transfer option (as type psion not dif) and the spreadsheet loaded up just fine. The formulas were retained. I scanned this manual a few years ago and it was individual images. It might be my version that you have. It is possible to use OCR software to convert the images to text and then put that into a word processor and produce a final output. This will take time and may not be exact as the manual. Using ImageMagick (open source), it is possible to take a number of JPEG images and convert them into a PDF file. The PDF file will be the same size as the JPEG images combined. With a USB/multi-card reader, it should be possible to create a QDOS file system on a Compact Flash card. I've scrounged about 13 512MB CF cards that are no longer needed at work. I can send them to someone in the UK if someone can use them. I also have two unopened boxes of TDK ED disks (10 per box) that I bought in 1995 when a local store in Dayton was selling them cheap. Years ago I scanned the whole Jan Jones book and OCR'ed the text and put it into a word document. I cleaned up most of it and was planning to add back in the drawings. Once again we are on the eternal debate about what makes one computer different than the other. It is the hardware or it is the OS? With an Intel system I can run a number of OS's; Windows, Linux, MacOS, BSD, etc. With an OS like Linux or BSD, I can run them on different CPU's; Intel, MIPS, ARM, Sparc, etc. The QL still harks back to the days when the OS and the hardware were very tied together. I'm a software guy, so me, the platform is the OS. To a hardware person, the platform might be the hardware. In these days of virtualization, it can all get a little confused. Part of the reason the uQLx has not been so seamless is that it supports a variety of Unix systems on a variety of CPU's. To make it seamless, a version would have to be compiled for a variety of Unix flavors, including a variety of Linux flavors (and the different install packages). The first time I tried uQLx, I had it running under IRIX on a Mips R5000 chip (not very common). I think the best that can be hoped for is for the QL-on-a-stick for Linux would support only the x386 platform and not the other chip sets that Linux supports. I can assist with the testing as I can get a hold of a number of Linux systems (probably all Red Hat), but I do have access to a VMware system that might have other Linux images. From the discussion I can get a feel for what might be the issue that is being discussed. Over the last 12 years I've been on the Board of 4 different non-profits. I've written the By-laws (what you guys are calling the Constitution) for one non-profit. The only time the By-laws really come into play is when someone thinks that the organization is not behaving properly. I was in one non-profit where there were two factions and we really needed the By-laws to keep everyone playing properly. In another non-profit, the By-laws stipulate how long an officer may hold an office. We've ignored this part of the By-laws because there is no one stepping up to take over the office. If we followed the By-laws all of the officers would be termed out and with no one stepping up to take over, the organization would basically have no Board. Given the nature of installing programs on Windows to run them, I can imagine creating a QL-on-a-stick for Linux would be fairly easy. The device would just need to be mounted (automount might do this with a USB Drive) and then apps would be directly from the USB drive. The USB drive can be formated for Windows (MS-DOS) and be mountable, so the whole thing could be created from a Windows box and then tested with Linux. With DosBox, QPC1 could be made to run. The main parts of the program are: Inform - compiles z-code into a game. zip- takes a compiled game and plays it. If you have a game file (curses_dat) in the same directory as the zip executable, then to have zip read the curses_dat file and play it, the command line is: exec zip;curses_dat This will open a new window and start the game. Zip is able to read games that were built on other platforms ( but only games using zcode versions 3 5). I wrote a review for this many years ago for IQLR and luckily it was still on a hard drive. ED or QED was useful for it's simple of creating small scripts to automate some editing (like removing all CR characters from the end of a line). For more advanced features, I'd recommend MicroEmacs. The version for the QL support the PE and allows the use of the mouse. It has scripting capabilities too. As for tools for SuperBasic programming, I've got to shamelessly mention Structured SuperBasic, which is a pre-processor for SuperBasic programs that does thinks like line numbering, IF DEF statements (like C), and a tool that allows it to be called from within MicroEmacs. I remember a while back there were some DOS menu system available as freeware or shareware. You might look into something like this as it would be little nicer than just some DOS text. I think the old SIMTEL20 system has a bunch of DOS free/shareware. If just DOS only, using graphics characters, you can create a menu system. Did this about 20 years ago, so I don't know if the graphics characters (above 127) will work in the newer DOS boxes in XP. I'm writing a paper on the History of the QL in the US. I'm looking for pictures from the US QL/Sinclair shows from about 1986 on. I just need one or two pics per show, preferably a picture that shows the most people or represents the whole meeting. Looking at the questions that Dilwyn originally discussed on this topic, they seem rather broad and to cover a lot of subjects. Some with zipping, some with just QLAY. Kind of hard to tackle something that broad, but is a list of individual questions are written, then this makes it easier to digest and write. I will relook at the original questions and see if I can tackle some of them. We should also look for past articles in QL today or other sources for writing that has already been done. Then it is just a matter of collecting all of the questions and answers and put them into one source. It would be nice to know the target audience. Are they QL'ers with black QL's? If the problem seems to be SMSQ/E on QPCII, then the user could try one of the QDOS emulators like Qemulator, UQLX, Qlay, etc. UQLX is nice but it requires a non-trivial install (have to load GTK). Qemulator is Shareware and costs about $40 for a full license. I have both QPCII and Qemulator running on my laptop. Qemulator emulates a QDOS system with a TrumpCard and comes with a Minerva rom and maybe other roms. It also runs SMSQ/E (the Gold Card version). I was just looking in some older Quantas and read the article on Minix for the QL. Basically, you take the Atari ST source code (available from Prentice-Hall), and add some changes done by Felix Croes (which he would send you). I don't know of someone made a distribution of the differences or not. I don't think many did this route. You will also need an archiver software like unzip, or infozip, or LHQ, etc. You then download the compressed software (.zip usually) to your PC, copy it to floppy, walk it to your QL, use mtools to copy it to a QL floppy, then use unzip to extract the files. The software is easy and I'm sure some QL'ers in Germany can give you the executables on floppy to get you started. The hardest part will be getting the hardware for this. [ql-users] Concept 3D
One of the few QL programs that was written in the US and sold in the UK is Concept 3D, a 3D wire frame graphics program, written by Robert Fingerlee. I don't know who sold it, but like other dealers, the rights to the original program might not be back in the hands of the Author. Back before it was released, I had a chance to meet Robert, as he only lived about a mile from where I was living. This morning I was reading the local paper and I noticed a Letter to the Editor from Robert Fingerlee. It looks like he is still in the local area and probably in the phone book. If anyone is still interested in Concept 3D, I can contact Robert and see if he is willing to release the program (and possibly the code) for re-distribution and maybe the public domain. If he does not have any of the original software, someone around the QL community should still have it and the manual. Let me know if I should contact him. If so, we could use that as a start (if the author is willing) and go from there. It was my impression that when Quanta last printed the book, they owned the rights. My copy was printed in 1989 and it says quite clearly: Copyright 1989 Quanta So, either Quanta does own the rights, or the book I have is wrong. Either way, I think it would be nice to see it published electronically. If Jan Jones does own the rights, maybe Quanta could approach her and ask her if she is willing to allow it to be freely distributed. I'd be willing to help scan the document in. For computer safety (and security) reasons I'm using Opera 100% at home. Supposedly Opera is the browser that is closer to adhering to the HTML standards. It is fully supported and being updated. I believe Mosaic is no longer being updated. I've also heard of Konquerer. On a Slashdot poll it scored close to Mozilla and Firebird in percentage used (where as Opera only hit at about 3%). [ql-users] TurboPTR under UQLX-win32
Just to let you know I am having a problem running TurboPTR under UQLX-win32. When I run the example progorams, like EX1_TASK, I get an error Can't open my windows. I've tried TurboPTR under plain UQLX running under Linux and the example programs work fine. I've let George Gwilt know about the issue, but since it fails under UQLX-win32 but works under UQLX, it looks to be an issue with UQLX-win32. I've asked him about what might cause the issue. When I get them, I'll pass them along to you and we can look into the differences between UQLX and UQLX-win32. BTW, I tried both JS and Minera ROM's with UQLX-win32. I'm trying out UQLX under Linux. I've got a copy of TK2_BIN that I used to run on my QL before I got a Gold Card. Every time I load it and CALL it, the emulator freezes.
