[Ql-Users] Q60 power supply
In-Reply-To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> My Q60 is now working as it ought. I appeared to have two problems. Firstly, yes Tony there was a mechanical on-off switch on the incoming mains but this had become unreliable. Secondly, I found an interesting note on using AT power supplies on model railway circuits which suggested a minimum current drain not far short of 1 amp was required else the thing shut down automatically (something to do with non-linearity at low outputs). There is now a sturdier switch taken off an old AST chassis and a resistor between a 5v line and ground. Anyway, thanks to all. By 'latter have' I assume you really meant 'this has' (8-)# Ahah I missed that - you didn't actually say AT in your first msg but P5/6 was a clue. Two types of supply: 1) Old AT That has a mechanical on/off switch so should nothing special. Why aren't you simply using the built in switch? All the ones I have ever used do not need a motherboard connected. I have plenty of such supplies, which I could send for postage only if you fail to get yours going. 2) New ATX and similar with 'soft' switch. This you connect the green cable (p14) to any ground, but p15 next door (black) is the best candidate. I am not sure what is meant by "shorting to ground", tho' it could be the PowerGood needs to be taken low. I remember that it is necessary to have a sufficient load on the 12v supply or they do not work, but an HDD should suffice. Or a 12v auto bulb if needed. ___ QL-Users Mailing List http://www.q-v-d.demon.co.uk/smsqe.htm

In-Reply-To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> I am not sure Tony that you are thinking of an old-fashioned AT power supply. The latter have 2 six pin plugs - i.e. no pins 14&15. They also do not use a green wire. The only pin neither ground nor a given voltage is the P(ower) G(ood) pin which is orange - but since this stabilises at +5 VDC, I don't think that shorting to ground would be quite the thing or am I wrong here? When I assembled my Q60, I just used a PC case that came to hand. The motherboard power on this is delivered by two connectors labelled P8 & P9. To get the power supply to switch on in the absence of a M'board using these plugs I had to link one of their lines to a ground on one of the other 4-pin plugs. This has worked for a year or so but now the link has come adrift from P8/P9 and I can't remember where it should go. Can anyone help please?
