If you have the serial lead working and are transferring to a Windows
machine you could use Jonathan Hudson's QTPI to send the files and the
Windows Hyperterminal to receive them. This would control the handshake
and, if you are transferring a lot of files, make it easier to get them
in the right place. Mind you I have never done this with a QL. I used to
do it using my old PSION organiser.

I don't know either. I have a 250mb file at the moment and may extend

"and the postmistress was held at gunpoint by two men, each carrying sawn

Before I lived here in Brighton I had to come down for a series of shows
in the Brighton Centre. We stayed in a hotel called 'The Old Ship Hotel'
In the lobby was one of those board which have letters stuck into velvet
slots so you can spell out various messages. On the day I was sitting in
lobby I noticed it read 'The Old Ship Hotel welcomes'. I casually
wandered over and removed the 'p' from Ship and replaced it with the 't'
from 'Hotel'. I then replaced that 't' with the 'l' and sat down. It
took over an hour of visitors giggling and snorting before the
receptionist noticed what I had done. I also recall waiting for someone
at Plaistow station. They had a notice on a blackboard which read, '
London Underground apologise for the delays to District Line trains.
This is due to Staff Error at Rayners Park'. Unfortunately they left the

I've been given so much advice that my head is spinning. In one email I
was advised to by QPAC2, but was then told that its the same as the
pointer environment I already have. But I thought that it comes bundled
with SMSQ/E, so if I were to buy that I wouldn't need QPAC2 as well,
surely?
Ok some of the advice was maybe not quite worded concisely. The Pointer
Environment is the three files PTR_GEN, WMAN, and HOT_REXT. These form
the basis of the extended system and are, as you said, bundled into
SMSQ/E in an extended form. QPC2 is a collection of system handling
routines including file management and job management. The Pointer
environment files are now freely distributable and are backwardly
compatible.
I know my memory isn't as complete as it was, but I'm pretty sure that
I bought Qram, which just happened to have the pointer environment
bundled with it. QPAC2 also included the pointer environment, but they
were different products; but I don't remember what differentiated
them. (we are talking 1987 here after all).
QRam was a precursor to most of this.

I think the main hurdle that TuroPtr has to jump is the bad reputation

Yes, that is the one. It may be in need of an upgrade though.
The current version of ptr_gen and wman is 2.01. They are both in need of an
update though, as they are out of synch with the corresponding SMSQ/E
versions (bugs and new facilities).
Who maintains these?
Well, they are now free to distribute and I do not think that anyone is
maintaining them. I suppose if there are bugs they should be reported
but I am not sure who would be willing to take it on for nothing. As for
new facilities, I think it was never intended that the three PE files
should be the same as SMSQ/E. The recent upgrade was so that programs
that accessed the new colours would not crash but run in QL mode.
Wolfgang may have other ideas but I think if you want extended an O/S
you will have to get SMSQ/E.

Did you post for details of the mentioned fast emulator ?
Did you receive my post made some 4hours later ?
Did you read it ?
Did you acknowledge it ?
Did you respond to it ?
At the end of your post you said. 'So I will end this exchange' or word
to that effect and accused me of 'verbiage'. I decided not to reply.
And you accuse me of being aggressive?
Seemingly NO to the last two at least.
I certainly made the assumption the PC floppy ribbon would do the job,
nothing to try it out on just now. So what other "statements " were
wrong
Why am I wasting my time answering you now? That is the real question.

I know that response was meant as a jest, but I was being perfectly
serious.Surely, if you are interested in selling a product, its up to
you to show what it can do. If you leave it to the prospective buyer to
try to work it out for himself you will end up losing sales. As I have
never used SMSQ/E, I think I should be the LAST person to write a demo
to show off its capabilities. Anyway, your suggestion is unworkable.
Firstly, as I said, I no longer own any native QL hardware (that
includes Gold card). Secondly, I'm not sure how I use QLAY to write
anything that uses the SMSQ/E features that QDOS lacks. Perhaps you
could enlighten me there? Even if that wasn't the case, there would be
the learning curve to go through to find out how to use the high colour
etc. All of which requires manuals etc.
Yes it was. Although I had not realised that you wanted it to
demonstrate the colour drivers too. The problem is that it is hard to do
anything that really demonstrates it all given that there are some
aspects which remain commercial property and cannot be released on
demos. Most of the program demos need MENU_REXT loaded and that is a
commercial release. You may wonder why this is but the answer is that it
is programmable from BASIC and sold as such. The user would have to have
a disk with the menu extensions on it and then he could load those but
this would then mean it would have to be a QL User (and an up to date
one) and that does not give a demo to the uninitiated. Perhaps the
answer would be to sell the demo for the price of the menu extensions.
If the user is happy with the demo he can then return his receipt and
get that money back when he buys the full thing. This would mean two
demos. One with the full QXL.WIN demo on it that is paid for and
another, without them, which is free. How does that sound?

I don't know why you have to take such an aggressive stance. Why do
you have problems? I was not complaining about the cost, nor requesting
a price reduction, merely offering the constructive suggestion that if
the market appears to have reached saturation, a new market might open
up if the price is reduced. I seem to have sparked off quite a lively
debate, so it was a worthwhile exercise, but it turns out that my
suggestion had been tried already without, apparently much success. I
wasn't complaining that I missed the promotion, merely curious to
discover where I should look for such offerings. It must be admitted
that although I visit Marcel's site quite often, I don't visit
Jochen's, and no I don't subscribe to QL Today, but that is hardly a crime is it?
I was not being aggressive I was just pointing out the way it seems to
the people who put a lot of time and effort into keeping the QL scene
going. The very fact that people are on this list shows they have an
interest but so few of them contribute in an other way.

I suppose after a couple of weeks of sitting at the computer writing two
articles for the current edition of QL Today, checking and preparing the
new EASYPTR release with Marcel, setting how much sweat and effort
Jochen puts into getting the magazine out on time, seeing how much
Marcel puts into QPC2, QPCPrint and the EASYPTR update and getting a QL
show ready I was just peeved that people seemed to think all this was
not really worth a few pounds or any real support from them. Maybe you
were, somewhat unjustly, on the receiving end of that.

And now for another suggestion
The QPC2 demo on Marcel's site hardly shows the system off to its best
potential.. The presentation of the screen that results from the boot
file on the .win file that is included for download is awful, and
could have been from qdos. There really isn't anything to help the
uninitiated to know whatto do with it, and it does not seem to have
changed since I first looked at QPC1. This surely is not the way to
showcase the system. The justwords demo does that much better, as do
the screenshots from QDT that I've seen. How about a demo that
properly showcases the programme?

(expecting another flame from Roy telling me how much work I'm asking
someone to do for free ;-) )
No you won't get it just a suggestion that you do one and then give it
to us to put on the site (tee hee). Of course you won't be able to save
it in the demo but you could write the boot file using QLAY and then
test it on the demo. - or even get SMSQ/E for your Gold card !

A 30 day time limited version, as is normal in most share ware,
degrading to your no save mode, after this time limit.
QPC2 is not a normal PC program. It does not write to the registry,
install hidden files, DLLs or any of that stuff. It is, in fact very QL!
Making it time out so that those with short arms and long pockets don't
just reinstall it again would be a major undertaking.

You know that the save works. If you have the programs on another QL

You have found a new way of getting software support. You could have

of QCDEZE was being used.
I thought he had been in touch with you himself and I was just reporting
it in case anyone else had a problem like it and could not solve it. I
had always had a great appreciation of your work - no slur was intended.
By the way I would be happy if you could write a bit about the use of
QCDEZE for inclusion in the Start Here series in the next issue of QLT.

As for the name shortening, sorry but you only have Bill Gates to
blame for that one as you must have used a PC to burn the CD. The
names on the ISO9660 part of the CD are short due to DOS short file
name conventions, directories are not part of the file name in DOS. If
you had burnt it on an Amiga there would be no problems with filename
length. I only got my head around Windows LFNs last year when I wrote
my FAT16 CFcard programme, so its not part of QCDEZE. It was no fun
and I would need to be paid money to put it in.
I suppose it works in QPC2 because that accesses the files using
Windows. Interesting. I had not thought of that. More for the next
column them

Glad to see someone reads the columns then - I do wonder at times.

No software of any complexity is without bugs. QPC2's bugs are usually
fixed before any get sold and those that slip through are fixed very
quickly with free updates. Older versions are not buggy as suggested -
just not as refined and developed as the current ones. Some newer
programs require keywords that have been especially built into SMSQ/E to
make them work. QPC2 and SMSQ/E are inter-linked and some versions will
not work with the wrong SMSQ/E file. The whole thing is a continuous
line of sustained development and very hard to backtrack on. In the end
the users benefit from this. Most upgrades are free and the ones which
are charged for are major re-workings of the system. Much of this is not
evident to the users except that it works better and does more things.
Marcel does not even own a trumpet let alone blow it.

Now from that point to the point of offering support for things you
haven't sold or that are free are each one's decision. But that's not
the FOSS community's fault certainly but rather the user's that
demands too much - There is a reason for the "You give them an inch
they'll take a mile" saying... :-)
Most of them are friends after all these years so I help anyway. Some
are a pain in the fundamental orifice - but, curiously, they don't seem
to realise they are in that group.

If someone wants the platform to be free but they are not interested in
buying QPC or QemuLator and uQLx doesn't satisfy them... they can
always go ahead and change for example uQLx to support colours etc...
:-)
My point entirely. The free software brigade is so active they have
already changed the free QL emulators into something that makes SMSQ/E
and QPC2 obsolete. If these people would stand up I could hear them more
clearly.
My particular "beef" with SMSQ/e is with its license.
I just knew someone would mention that. Like it or not there has been
more improvement in SMSQ/E since the licence than in any other system.
Support schemes. If you choose to answer, well that's a credit to you,
but not the software author's fault! You SHOULD charge for support for
FOSS... there's nobody stopping you from doing so and most likely I
suspect that the phonecalls would stop very fast as well ;-)
As for the "Added Value" of support being nonsense, I do not think that
software giants like RedHat, Novell and mySQL are stupid... do you?
They base their income on that scheme :-)
That is because this stuff is so hard to understand. One interesting
thing is that people base their assumption that LINUX has and increasing
market share on sales and downloads but how many try it and give up? I
work in an area where we interact with the public. Users, small and
large businesses. Some businesses run LINUX and are very happy with it.
Some run both LINUX and WINDOWS because they need computability. (Yes ,
you can read and write Office formats under Open Office but it screws
them up as Marcel and I found out while doing the EPTR manual. Annoying
stuff like not being able to edit the footers afterwards etc.). Some
tried it and reverted to WINDOWS because there was not enough software
or drivers. When you get down to the individual users many have bought
it. Some never tried it some couldn't understand how to install it and
some are happy. Groups one and two are candidates for the 1 pound a
minute phone lines but this is, after all just another rip off.

Taking an example from the Linux community again, a LOT, if they have
any real belief in the future of the platform.
How many work in the QL sector for real monetary gain, rather than love
of the product?
This is an argument we re-visit every now and then. The trouble is those
who get on the horse at one end of the valley marked 'Free For All' and
those at the opposite end never ever change their mind so we all trot
out the same tired clichés.

Both sides are possible. You can write software and give it away for
free if you want. QPC2 does not stop you doing that. Or you can write
software and sell it. Trouble is there are very few people doing either.
We should appreciate both of these sides and say 'thank you'.

What we do get is people saying 'well I don't use the platform much, and
I only take a passing interest in it but make it free anyway'

The answer is simple. If you want it, and it cost money, buy it. If you
think it is too dear, don't. There are many free or cheap emulators -
they may not be so good or get such sustained development, but then that
is what you are paying for. If you object to the author owning the
rights to his own work don't buy by it but don't whinge on about it. It
is, after all his decision. I own a garden at the back of my house. You
are welcome to look at it but I don't want you digging in it or building
on it. No difference.

The idea that you can make money with 'added value' is nonsense because
people still call me at all hours and want support - usually for things
they have not bought from me. People still send disks for 'free updates
in little envelopes with no return labels and postage, and people don't
'buy' manuals. I found this out with ProWesS when I offered to print
them at cost. For many people the manual should be in my house so they
can call me up and have me read it to them as some kind of techno
bedtime story.

We all have our own viewpoint on this. I suggest that, after several
discussion on the subject we all give up trying to change the other
sides mind.

I'm still surprised that he doesn't try to squeeze out the last bit of
revenue by offering to sell old versions at even more heavily

The simple answer, I think, is that the advances made in recent versions
of SMSQ/E and QPC2 make the older versions irrelevant.
If you look at software prices and the psychology behind purchases, it
doesn't matter what the product is, most people wouldn't think twice
about paying £20 or £30 for a piece of software, but would if it costs
£60 or £70. Witness, as an example, all the people willing to take the
risk with dodgy oem copies of windows XP on ebay.co.uk, rather than
paying the price for kosher copy.
But that is another world. One where it does not matter to people if the
software costs something, or took a lot of work or, in fact belonged to
someone in the first place. If they can steal it they will. That is not
how we operate in the QL community. We pay for our software because we
respect the amount of work that goes into producing it and, by giving
that money we encourage the authors to produce more, to develop and to
innovate. None of us have to do this - we all make a loss out of it but
we do it because we want to and because we are appreciated. When that
stops you will be left in a barren world of thieves and vagabonds.

And if the WIN_DRIVE command is not to people's liking, there is a
little utility by me called QXLWINManager to change drive references.
Between Qwirc to rename them and QXL WIN Manager to reassign and the

Where is that on your website ? I would like to try it and to mention it

If Daniele Terdina, Rickard Zidlicky and Phoebus are lurking here
today, can you let us know if the various QemuLators and uQLxes can
handle a QXL.WIN in a sub-directory? e.g. can they access C:\foo\QXL.WIN

Or only C:\QXL.WIN, D:\QXL.WIN and so on?
This would be useful information for my next article. I do not want this
to be a one man operation so I would welcome any input from others.
Also, can a QXL access more than one QXL.WIN anywhere other than root
directory? Suspect the answer is no if using vanilla QXL SMSQ, yes if
using qxl smsq/e
Ordinary SMSQ is limited to one QXL.WIN file per logical drive. SMSQ/E
for the QXL has configurable drives so it can read these files anywhere
and with any name. I wonder if the WIN_DRIVE commands are implemented in
SMSQ. I suspect not but I do not have a QXL or a PC with an ISA slot to
test it out. If they are then you could use Per Witte's QWIRC program to
access them. If not maybe someone should do a small extension that can
be added to SMSQ to enable it. Mind you how many QXLs are there that are
still in use?

Getting back on topic...
I would be interested in the DVD, but, as I am limited to plain vanilla
QDOS emulation (uQLx, QLAY), because, I can't justify the outlay for
QPC2. (I'm not saying that it's over-priced, but in a limited and
shrinking market, no selling price can be a commercial proposition, so
better surely to drop the price and get some new sales than leaving it
at a price where it costs a comparable price to complete linux distro,
complete with professional manuals, and 6 cds or so of applications, or
an oem version of Windows)
The point is that QPC2 has represented a great deal of work on the part
of Marcel who is still at university and has a low income. If you take
it that the LINUX distribution and that Windows is more widespread then
the payment you are making in respect of the work put into their
construction is far higher. If you had a similar payment to make to
Marcel for the time effort and dedication he has put into making QPC2
such a superb system you would be paying a lot more.

I touted this idea at Portslade on SUnday, only two people said they
might be interested, another three said they thought it might be a
goodidea but they probably wouldn't buy it themselves.

Points you'll need to consider:
1. Multiple QXL.WINs on a single DVD. Users will need to know how to
set up for these in QPC2. Not all emulators can access QXL.WIN in a
sub-directory.
I intend to tackle the details of QXL.WIN file handling in the next part
of 'Start Here' in QL Today. I believe there is software to read QXL.WIN
files on other systems but I did get reports of people being unable to
access the QDT QXL.WIN files on the CD so I would be grateful for more
details on this.
2. The different - and + formats
Most modern DVD-ROM and DVD-RW drives are multi format these days and
the difference between + and - disks resides mostly in their
multi-session capabilities. There can be problems using +R disks in DVD
players that connect to TVs but that is of little concern here.
3. Many of the current QL CDs have different stuff in the QXL.WIN to
what they have outside that. COnsider the Literature CD and the
Documentation CD for example. You'll either need a good front end or a
good set of documentation explaining where everything is. At the
moment, copies of all my CDs are on my hard disk like this:

I would agree with that.

dot backslash is dosspeak for ' look in the current directory'. It

Sernet should work on standard QL as long as you have the STX and SRX

baud rate, 9,600 or lower, don't think 19,200 stands a chance on a QL.
Obviously, for sernet, you have to have QDOS and/or SMSQ/E at both ends.
I think you have to have SMSQ/E on both ends for it to work.

At this stage there was some doubt over the legal position, which in
itself led to a lot of misunderstanding because no one had thought of
asking Albin. I understand that he is quite happy for the program to be
upgraded.
Jochen and I have never had any doubts over the legal position because
Albin handed control of over to us. He did, at the time say, he would
reassume control when the colour drivers cam out but that tool too long
and he is now out of the mondset which created it.
When I last saw the upgraded version all it did was allow you to use
GD2 colours directly, but nothing else. For example, if you use high
resolution sprites you have to load these into EasyMenu every time you
make changes to a menu.
This is true and I am not sure how they would work when that menu was
used. I have been experimenting with it myself recently because I have
updated my Invoicing program. I find I cannot get high colour sprites to
stick. Marcel had a look at it for me but said :

''Well, as far as I remember the whole object code is a complete mess,
I'm not surprised it isn't working... I tried it with the example file
above, but even though the sprite is loaded again Sysmon starts beeping,
so doesn't work too well either.'

I would be happy to release the version I have here as a free upgrade
but we are not sure of the stability of it and it does have the above
problems with the icons. That said I will ask him if I can release the
version I have to registered users and include it as a high colour
option on the distribution disk. I know he does not want work on this so
I doubt there will be another version unless his curiosity gets the
better of his judgement and he pokes at it some more.
We have come to expect a high standard from Marcel, and thus we should
respect his opinion on this and not pressure him to release an
incomplete product.
I completely agree.
I also agree with previous comments about producing menus by non
graphical means. EASYPTR was the best way to make the menus in spite of
its obvious drawbacks in other areas.

in this
group every now and then, whether there will be an upgrade or not.
Well how many is many and what would you update ? The extensions all
seem OK and the problems seem to lie in the menu and sprite generation
software. Now if this is what needs to be done the answer may lie in
wring a new program to generate menus and sprites in high colour mode
that follow the EASYPTR standard and will work with the extensions. How
hard or easy this is I cannot say
When I asked Marcel personally some weeks ago, he told me that he is
not at all
interested to do it.
I did not say he was interested in doing it just that he was the ideal
person to do it. I gather that the code is very hard to work with as I
said and I also get the impression that he does not want to do it.
So what is true?
I would definitely want to have an upgrade (and pay for it ofcourse)
and think that
we need it urgently.
So, as far as I am concerned, please stop discussing it, fix a price
for it and begin to DO it.
It is all very well to say this but how do you get someone to do it?
Now I realise that you will all say 'make it open source and then
legions of talented programmers will spring from the stone that they
shelter under to avoid the heat of the commercial world and do it' .
Being realistic and seeing the vast amount of work these people have
provided us with so far you can appreciate I am not holding my breath
here.

What I will say it this. As one of the two people who are licensed to
sell this I will listen to anyone who may want to make a serious attempt
at writing new menu and sprite generators for Easypointer and I am
willing to be the vector for anyone who would like to sell these
programs. In the case of the sprite generator I am sure Jim will give
you the info you need to make a converter to allow you to export sprites
from his QDT Icon program. I also think this is an important project and
should tackled so I am happy to support it any way possible (except that
I cannot directly pay anyone to do it).

If someone would like to do it for free they would be free to distribute
it so long as they do not include any of the copyright Easypointer
components.

Contact me if you want to take up the challenge.

The upgrade situation is not easy. I do have an updated version of

John, Don, and Roy have all worked on my various tries at cabling,
generic (or the old) boxes, etc. at various US shows. Roy even took the
existing cable, took two pairs of four wires each and reversed them
relative to each other. Things worked better in ways that again I don't
remember, but never fully satisfactorily. Still couldn't format.
There were a few versions of SMSQ/E for the Gold Card which had
formatting problems. You had to issue direct instructions as to what the
disk was such as
FORMAT 'flp1_*D' for a DD disk and
FORMAT 'flp1_*H' for an HD one

That seems better in the later versions. Should not affect the native QL
system though. Yes I did twist the cable because you had two flp2_
drives together. You twist lines 10, 11, and 12 counting from the line
with the coloured stripe and by doing that you reverse the drive
allocation. Making flp2_ turn into flp1_ so to speak.

as 9D-25D as well as 9D-9D.)

The one in question was a serial laplink cable which had both 25 and 9
pin D connectors on each end. Designed to be used by computers with
either kind of serial connection. It worked fine with Laplink.
In the PC world however the world 'LapLink' routinely is identified
with the Parallel Version (Also usable with the DOS licensed version
of LapLink available from MS-DOS v.4.00 on to v.6.23) - BUT NOT PC-DOS.

As a consequence asking for a LapLink cable you end up with a parallel
cable which of course not only cannot work with the serial ports but
can potentially damage your QL.
But a moments real thought about this would lead to conclude that you
cannot connect a parallel 'D' cable to a serial one because the parallel
cables are male to male and the serial ones are female to female.

I have found an Aurora manual, and by golly, it -is- wired correctly.
A straight through ribbon connector with IDC will give a standard PC
type serial plug.
To connect to another computer with PC like ports, it will need an
additional laplink (crossover) cable.

Exactly. My point was that there's NO reason whatsoever that a good
quality cable wouldn't operate.
I have tried many cables for my standard (Aurora board based ie.
non-sH) serial ports, both ready from PC multi i/o's and ones that I
either soldered or just pressed on. The common denominator on all of
these was that sernet wouldn't work correctly above 9600 bps. Mind you
PBOX, QTPI etc worked properly at 19.2 kbps as expected since I do
have a sH ;-) (not broken anymore ;-) hehe)
This is interesting because, when I bought my Aurora, long in the past,
I was told you could not use a straight connection and it had to be
soldered in a special way. I therefore bought them from Qubbesoft. I
never challenged it. Even so you can still plug them in wrong - except
of the few I have for sale which have the nice, bump oriented, headers
because Natsa made them.

wrong way round, so screwing up the wiring.
Yes they can and often are.

Not necessarily. Depends on the version of the Aurora that you have.
All proper Auroras have directional IDC headers, however most Qubbesoft
ones as documented by Nasta many times were without the IDC jacket
ergo the positioning problems
Almost all the Auroras out there were made by Qubbesoft. I have a few
here made by Nasta that have the correct IDC sockets but all the others
did not have this. A lot of people got this wrong. Just to add to the
problems they are not the usual, straight through, wiring so you cannot
use one of the cables from a PC.

On the basis of Roy's email concerning PE and Toolkit 2, I've made the
latest versions I have to hand available on the Toolkits page on my

If Tony Tebby (or anyone else connected with these) is unhappy about my
understanding of Roy's email, please let me know and I'll remove them
immediately. Equally, as the latest TK2 ROM image I have is v2.12 which
seems a bit old to me, any more recent updates could quickly be made
available via this page. The manual for Toolkit 2 is also there (same
version as on the documentation website).
No I think this is fine. It was my intention when I asked Tony if we
could make them freely distributable.

Not sure I understand the point here. If you have two machines

they have a letter and then use that letter as one of the QXL.WIN
