I still don't know what sort of backplane the original enquiry, asking

Hi Bryan,

I have updated the details on the hardware page on the QL Wiki as a
result of this discussion yesterday, which should hopefully help
newcomers - let me know if you have any comments (or feel free to add to
the pages!)

There is really only one 'backplane' - a device that adds extra
expansion plugs to the QLs expansion connector (sometimes called 'J1' as
that is its label on QL circuit diagrams).

Dave has not decided exactly what his backplane will look like.
In all probability he will just build some Mplanes from component stock
I have - http://tfs.firshman.co.uk/ql/mplane.htm

Well, yes, I do know what 'my' backplanes will look like. :)

I looked at mine, and the other designs out there.

There are two families of design: The riser, which stacks cards up above
each other, and the low profile, which places cards side by side. It seems
to me the side by side design would fit in most cases better, and it gives
better access to the cards, while also allowing them to radiate and convect
heat better.

I think I would design something like the MPlane, but since I already have
the offer to assemble the remainder, I think that's what I should do. Tony
is offering me an exceptional courtesy and I would be foolish not to accept.

It's a no-brainer ;)

Young folk will often be interested in games, which I cannot help
with. I did have a contact from a chap who had re-visited Spectrum by
way of emulator. He knew of the QL and wanted to find out more, but
would probably rely on emulation. He took away a year's old Quanta to
go through, but looking through one with me, he couldn't understand
what was being referred to by name. Now, there have recently been
enquiries who is interested in a backplane. I don't know what a
backplane is, and QLwiki is no help; similarly for Aurora - what is
it? We must ensure that beginners (and even long-time users like
myself) can easily find out what is being talking about, without

A backplane is an expansion bus, allowing you to connect more than one
peripheral to the QL - the problem is all in the terminology - search
for QL-Bus on QL Wiki and you will see a picture of one.

There is still lots of information to be added to QL Wiki - any
volunteers to help ?

couldn't sent this, but it obviously did.

It's fine, Bryan. Some comments are worth reading twice.

Some old members of the community do return, but that will be an ever
shrinking number - we do need new users.

That said, we do not present ourselves very well. Old, expired websites in
the 90s style. Dead links. The older hardware and software is not sometimes
very inspiring.

All things we can do something about.
