[QUAD-L] Desperate for Care

I desperately need to find a good live-in caregiver. The current one is ripping
me off and doing absolutely nothing, including giving me food or any of my
medication. IT'S HORRIBLE!!! Any recommendations?

The pump is worth consideration, but only if the doctors feel that you are
a good candidate for the procedure. Small amounts of medicine go directly
to the lesion.
Let us all know what you do.

Welcome, Karan! While each of our disabilities affect each of us differently,
none of us are alone in this new adventure.

My Uncle is a Dr. who studied the effects of indwelling medicinal pumps. His
advice: Only as a very last resort. I took 20mg Baclofen 4x a day for 20
years, then switched to 600mg Neurotin 3x a day.

If you talk with a Dr. who really understands muscle spasms as the neurological
level AND understands what each of the receptor inhibitor drugs do, then you
will find the right option for your specific needs.

I, too, have a son. He is a great motivator for me. I've been considering
writing a book on my experiences being a Dad in a chair. There are many tricks
I had to learn on my own in raising him.

God bless and welcome.

Kabear97,
I'm Dave and had a C3-4 incomplete dislocate in 1967 from a
trampoline. I finished college in Math and with some additional classes,
taught
school for a few years. I loved those hours and most kids although the money
wasn't all that hot. I left after getting a call from Honeywell to do
computer programming in 1979. I spent a good share of '76, '77, '78' and '79
signing up with every state and private placement agency and sending out
many resumes on my own. The state came through with a home based computer
job about 2 days before Honeywell called. I'm sure I was hired to fill a
'quota' but I didn't and don't care as I did a lot of very good work for them
for 25 years before they gave my job to India and got 5 engineers for the
same price. I had and understand many lows involved with SCI life and
want to assure that nothing is forever - things change. WE are living life
at different levels now and it's wondrous to see what is available at those
different levels. My mom left me with a few very insightful thoughts -
if you hadn't broken your neck - you'd have killed yourself with your mach
II, hair on fire lifestyle, AND you still have the most magnificent organ
made by God to get you through life - your brain still works just fine -
don't goof that up. (that was a marijuana reference). Please know that
SCI life is an existence of ongoing experiments to see what works for you,
all the rules have changed and you need to try EVERYTHING. Giving up just
isn't a reasonable choice.
Everyone on this list has something unique to give to you and I'm sure
they will all share info as you ask. Please don't be shy - you are still
in a pretty crappy stage of SCI. It DOES get better.

Just remembered one of the most common annoyances of all!

One of the first things I noticed that able-bodied people do all the time
amongst themselves that doesn't work with C5 quads too well, is handing you
something. Sometime they don't even get close, assuming you can lean-forward
to reach it.

Sometimes I'll grab between my two paws, but most times I'll ask them to put
it down on my lap, or on an adjacent surface. Its amazing how many people
(friends and family) don't remember, so I have to repeat Can you put it down
here for me?

[QUAD-L] Re: Magitek

2010-04-27 Thread Quadius
Did you look at the videos on the website? They explain how to use it
somewhat. Basically I hit a button on my head rest and then put my head in
the neutral position. This sets neutral. From there if I tilt my chin
down, the wheelchair will move forward. If I tilt my head to the left or
right it turns in that direction. Of course you can also tilt your head
forward and to the left to make a turn.

To go backward you tilt your head backward, but I like to think of it as
lifting my chin up. The hardest thing for me to get use to was if I set my
head in a different position, the chair drives faster or slower. At first
this is a detriment, but later when you get used to it you can tilt your
head backward while setting it so you can drive outside without having to
tilt your head too far forward.

Like I said, it's a learning process. I was using Peachtree for 14 years
and it has been a pretty big transition. I feel pretty comfortable now
going out, but it has taken me about six weeks to get that way. And I still
make mistakes, but they're not as bad as they were at first.

Programming is also pretty vital. It was extremely difficult because I
thought I had a particular grasp of how to drive it, so I was having them
set the program in a certain way only to discover I was setting it based on
a different neutral position.

Hopefully you can make heads or tails out of this.
Quadius
PS hopefully there aren't too many errors. I'm having trouble with my voice
cracking today and NaturallySpeaking doesn't like it very much.

I started doing it for my brother when he was deployed. When
he got back he wanted me to continue since he is busy with work and
travels. I make sure his bills get paid, manage his retirement accounts.
My aunt asked me if I could do the same for her. I suggested ways she
could save money, got her on a cheaper phone plan, pay her bills, when
she wants to buy or sell stocks she lets me know and I place the orders.
I only do it for family. Of course the person has to trust you with all
their account information. I use Quicken to handle accounts and Outlook
to remind me when bills are due for those that I could not setup auto-pay
for.
I saw something on the news once about people doing personal
concierge services. People doing services for people with busy
lives. Google personal concierge to get some ideas.

Funny. My left hand has about 10% normal use - I can grab and open part
way - wrist flex is so-so, surprising how little function can fool most
people. My right hand will sort of grab if I force something into it - tiny
wrist flex ability - mostly a paw.I do nearly everything with my left
hand and keep right one down. A gal at work that I had lunch with for at
least 15 years once asked what I was doing when I put my semi-open left hand
up to my flexed right paw when she asked me to clap. She really had no
clue.Pretty amazing. What could I ever expect them to know about
digesting, and eliminating.Ignorance is bliss. I also had a 30 year
experienced nurse put her knee in my back in my manual chair to push me down a
rounded curb where my footrests had dug in. I grabbed fast enough to stay
in - barely.
