The Toyo TR1 sounds like a decent tyre, but wondering if anyone else has fitted something else that would be recommended. Hello Mark. Speeking as someone who's not not mechanicly minded, and yes I do own / drive a Xtreme. It sounds like your friend is only interested in the brand badge name. I managed to loose it trying to avoid a big pot hole coming off a round about and wrote it off.. But in realty I was glad as a picked up an Xtreme next!.( a pinto one ) Great plus points for me, slightly bigger car so my legs could fit! has a boot, can use it all year round and with the hood on, (I'd use mine come rains, shine, snow) - stainless - no rust to worry about. A friend has a tiger Avon - have to keep an eye on the chassis as well as just the suspension bits. There may be an argument that some of the others are lighter and more nimble, but all in unless you are on a track who cares. Enjoy your car, your mate is just jealous! However I've got a friend who's a complete Caterham fan boy (but doesn't own one) who keeps going on at me that my car is a pile of scrap and is basically a Robin Hood and I need to sell it. I know I should just ignore him, but it's really starting to annoy me now and I would like to shut him up, with some technical comparisons, or with a magazine review, but there doesn't seem to be much online about the Xtreme. The best I've found so far is a bit of a review of the prototype car by Richard Hammond on Kits and Crusing from back in the day. I'm sure the view here might a little bit biassed but what is the general view of how the Xtreme stacks up against other 7 style cars e.g. Westfield's, Caterhams, Tigers, GBS etc? This sounds like a question Jim H is best to awnsew. My first thought was the relays. But yes the earth, from the battery might be the first thing to check. I had actually just joined the A1(M) so over the next few miles a check revealed that the only thing still working was the engine. No indicators, radio, heater fan, electric windows, fuel gauge - the list goes on. I left the A1(M) and pulled into a layby. I pulled the bonnet release, got out of the car, went to the nearside to open the bonnet and my wife then said that the radio had started working. (Unfortunately I didn't have time to check the lights) A further check revealed that everything else was back on line. I did wonder whether the action of opening the door or using the boot release may have re-disturbed the wiring to make everything work again but when I got home and tried to move the wiring, where possible, everything kept on working. I am now assuming that with everything failing that this is not a relay/fuse issue and it is a (major) intermittent earthing fault. However before starting a major hunt which will probably involve removing the dashboard I was looking for any suggestions, recommendations, advice as to whether my diagnosis is correct or whether it could be some simple fix! Re: [Quantum Owners] 2+2 Lights
If I recall correctly, I think I had this happen on my 2+2 aswell. This one relay worked the head lights, Hazards and horn I think. The thing I remember is it was the relay that was twice as tall as the other relays. Hope this helps. Robert Greig Sent from Yahoo Mail on Android On Fri, 14 Jun 2019 at 7:44, Nigel Plant wrote: Hi Guys Have just foind a problem with headlights not working. So am hoping for a quick few pointers before I get onto the detail of wiring diagrams etc. Here are the symptoms: Dipped and main beam headlights do not work. Sidelights work and the flaps do open. Headlights will flash normally using indicator stalk. In checking all systems found that hazards don't work and when hazards switched on indicators don't work, realise that may be logical. All fuses checked and ok. Without consulting wiring diagrams etc I would assume either the headlights are not receiving power from an ignition live (but this would mean hazards are a separate issue) or an earth problem. The latter being a guess as may be linked to all the bad weather we've been having. I've initially discounted a relay as couldn't see how this could explain dip and mains not working. I can go through trouble shooting routines, but the reason for the early post is son gets married on Saturday and is using the car, so am short on time and looking for a quick steer. My starting point will be earth near battery and headlight switch. Thanks Nigel -- -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Quantum Owners Group" group. I have had a new battery and a recon alternator with the original pulley wheel last year. These were changed as I the battery was going flat, and thought these were the issue, but the original setup did not have the dim ignition light issue... Can anyone advise if it is a duff battery, or duff alternator, and is there an easy way to check? Or any other suggestions please? Is it worth taking a wire directly from the alternator to the battery? Raceline state that the unit is frequently used with no expansion tank and will require frequent checks for water level. I also found on one of the Ford chat sites (passion for Ford?) that problems will be had if there is no hole in the thermostat to allow a bleed through prior to the stat opening. The hole needs to be large enough to allow water flow during warmup and small enough to ensure the heater gets sufficient flow. The article I read suggested about 2 – 3 mm hole. My system does have a removable cap and header tank but I did get too hot I drilled a 3mm hole in the thermostat which seemed to fix the problem although I have not used the car much since. I have checked the temp sensor I have fitted in the location along the side of the raceline. It has a 12mm thread which then goes into a T piece . The thread on the T piece which enters the Raceline is 5/8” OD. As to the thread type It may be NTP or BSP. A BSP fitting will only wind onto the T piece a couple of turns and a BSP male similarly only winds into the Raceline a turn or so before feeling tight. It may be a taper thread. So I think the answer to Robert’s sensor is that it is an AutoMega or similar with a 12 x 1.5mm thread Regards Ken Sent from Mail for Windows 10 From: quantumowners@googlegroups.com on behalf of Nigel Plant Sent: Friday, September 21, 2018 4:21:03 PM To: Quantum Owners Group Subject: RE: [Quantum Owners] Water Temp Sensor On the zetec Xtreme installation, there is no space for a temp sensor on old thermostat housing which is where the raceline bolts on as there is no clearance to the bulkhead. The intermediate position is used for a T piece connected to the water temp sensor and heater hose. Thus leaving the tstat housing for the cooling fan temp sensor. I will check mine later to see if can help. What about buying from Burton Power who sell Raceline or Raceline themselves. Out of interest have you checked yours? I have found on mine that the tstat housing is very high and if the water level is down ie expansion tsnk below the sensor the fan performance gets erratic or doesn't work. Re: [Quantum Owners] 2+2 Timing Belt
Yes as Martin said. Not that I've done this on mine. I think Jim Herne did it for me. Sent from Yahoo Mail on Android On Wed, 11 Jul 2018 at 11:37, 'Martin Hodnett' via Quantum Owners Group wrote: Hi Nigel. You have probably done the job now, I was doing something similar at about the same time. My 2+2 has the 1.6 CVH engine on which the camshaft oil seal popped out, that was a load of oil dumped on the roads between Uxbridge and Langley - one hell of a mess in the car park. While I was at it, I decided to change the cam belt and that is where the real challenge started - very limited clearance. Top cam belt cover came off no problem but the lower one needed the crankshaft pulley removed - not enough room to get it out. After lots of foul language and thumping around, the solution was to remove the front engine mount only and lower the engine enough to clear the subframe - at its lowest point, there was just enough room to remove the pulley - less than 1mm. I found that I was raising and lowering the engine many times to get "comfortable access" to the areas needed. Picture below shows the challenge. [Quantum Owners] MOT failure UPDATE
It looks like I'm not going to be able to take the Xtreme to France! Having had the wire for the lamda sensor replaced its back to the MOT.At the MOT retest, in failed on the emissions " with black smoke visible when it was reved." The MOT chap said it's either the CAT or the ECU!Given the lamda wire shorted/ melted I fear its the ECU.A spare Lamda was tried. Northampton Motorsport phone is engaged. I can't see any way I can find anyone to sort this in the next seven days. So It looks like I will be in the Fiesta not the Xtreme for the France trip. O boy.Lucky you had a fire extinguisher. I've never had one in any of my cars. Glad you where able to sort it out and still get the car back home. Very scary and I count my self very lucky that I could tackle the fire so promptly I could very easily have lost the 2+2. The reason for the fire, a fuel hose had come lose. The good news is that the fire did very little damage, and after fixing the hose, I was able to start the car and drive home. Thanks everyone. Yes Nigel.MOT said nsf Bearing very noisy. The Xtreme front hubs have the same internal bearing housing as the Sierra hubs, use the same bearings and tightening torque. From memory around 300 NM of torque. Thats the easy bit. I had problems as have some others with the nuts caysing the bearings to tighren when torqued, I also have hadnproblems on track days eith the nuts loosening. I think it is solved now, since putting a new hub on. What I do is; clean the centre lands in the bearing housing so that there are no high spots from punching the bearing cones out; then bench assembly to the specced torque, if the wheel spins freely all good. If it clamps up I put a very thin shim between the inner bearing race and centre land and tighten. I think the issue was poor control of the tolerance on the centre land thickness on some hubs. I did compare mine with a sierra hub and it was slightly down, but i didnt know what the design dimensions are. I have shims if you ever need any. Hope thats useful. The short answer is use Sierra torque, howdver if nousy, surely they should be changed or maybe thats whst you are doing. If that had a break in it i'd also expect you to have trouble with the battery charging and the engine cutting out. Also, the fan wouldn't normally be earthed to that point, though it is a Quantum so it's possible somebody did. If you have intermittent starting issues it's probably the starter wire from the ignition switch that has the problem (Black with a Blue stripe from memory), quite possibly it's the round push on fitting on the end if it's original or a crimp connector if not. The stud or tab on the starter is plated steel and rusts creating an intermittent connection. Also, 17 amp wire isn't really enough for the fan circuit, the fan is fused with a 20 amp fuse. I would use 27 to 30 amp (3mm squared) wire for the fan circuit The fan should only be coming on in slow moving or stationary traffic, if it's overheating while moving it's something else.
