Thank you both for reporting this. Gaijin, I'm sorry I missed your thread.

Just to confirm: Are you both using Xfce4?

Building on what Chris said, here are your general options, from best to worst:

1. Physical destruction of the storage medium. (usually overkill)
2. Make sure the data is encrypted before it ever touches the storage medium
(then wipe the encryption headers, if any, or keep the key secret).
3. Delete the files and overwrite them with a tool like "shred", and/or delete
them normally, then wipe all free space.

This is a frequently-made feature request that has been discussed quite a bit
in the past:

https://github.com/QubesOS/qubes-issues/issues/1293

Currently, there's no easy, integrated solution, but you can probably cobble
something together yourself if you have the requisite skills.

Some questions:

* Are you using Xfce4 (the default desktop environment in 3.2)?

* Have you reboot the machine before or after having this problem? In other
words, was this the first reboot since installing? Does the problem persist
across reboots?

* Did you do anything you can think of that might have triggered this problem?
Any configuration changes?

Yeah. I had the same thing happen when I upgraded to R3.2 as well. I
asked the same thing but nobody replied.
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/qubes-users/xjHi2TcYBAQ

It still happens from time to time. Seems to happen less if I have a
lot

of free memory. Closing down some memory hungry AppVMs seems to lessen
it, but I haven't been able to specifically replicate it.

Interesting, because I think I have more than enough memory (32 GB).
Thanks.

I've got 16GB myself. It's not that the memory is full, but it seems to
happen more when I have a lot of VMs open in one desktop. That may just
be a coincidence though.

I'm glad to see it wasn't just me though. I never had this happen with
earlier versions of Qubes on the same hardware. Not sure if it might be
the XFCE or a video driver issue. (I've never installed the nVidia
drivers.)

[qubes-users] HCL report qubes 3.1

2016-10-26 Thread gris 'Snoz'
Dear Qubes Development Team,

I am a complete noob with qubes and I am still learning to use it properly.

Accordingly I have split my machine between qubes and a debian jessie 8.6. I
first installed qubes into the top 500GB of the hard disk, then debian into the
rest. I got the debian installer to write an MBR onto a memory card.

I then hacked qubes' efi environment so i can boot the debian through debian
efistub.

I still use the debian as my "main" working environment, but intend to move
gradually over to the qubes side as I learn to use it.

Kind regards and thanks a million for your work!

I think the surest non-physical method is to make sure the data is
encrypted in the first place, and throw away the key/passphrase. On a
typical Qubes configuration, this would mean re-encrypting and
reinstalling the OS if your data was on the same LUKS volume as the OS.

FWIW, Qubes supports SSD TRIM by default. This might provide a certain
level of data erasure if you are using an SSD, leaving less data behind
*on average*. However, its not something you should rely on when
deleting specific files. Some SSDs and HDDs also have a "secure erase"
feature which erases the entire drive.

Re: [qubes-users] Re: Qubes Windows Tools 3.2.2-3 released

After updating Qubes tool, basically all relavant devices have issues.

Qubes Video, Xen Interface, Xen PV Storage, Xen PV Network.

Config in registry incomplete or broken (Code 19)

The repair option of the QWT uninstaller does not solve the issue as well.

Any idea? Otherwise I think I'm stuck with QWT 3.2.1.2.

Interesting, because I think I have more than enough memory (32 GB). Thanks.

Yeah. I had the same thing happen when I upgraded to R3.2 as well. I
asked the same thing but nobody replied.

It still happens from time to time. Seems to happen less if I have a lot
of free memory. Closing down some memory hungry AppVMs seems to lessen
it, but I haven't been able to specifically replicate it.

[qubes-users] XScreenSaver for dom0 pops up

2016-10-26 Thread John Maher
I'm getting the strangest thing on my screen. I'll be working and the
XScreenSaver dialog pops up (indicating the screen is locked) and the screen
goes black. However, the screen is not locked. I have to move a window around
to redraw my screen. This has always happened since I started using Qubes about
3 weeks ago. There appears to be no pattern that prompts this response.
Bizarre! Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Re: [qubes-users] ANN: Leakproof Qubes VPN

2016-10-26 Thread Manuel Amador (Rudd-O)
Apologies for the reply to self, but I have received great news.

The first piece of great news is that a user of Qubes VPN found a bug
that made it impossible for Qubes VPN to work with tun-style VPN
providers. We have fixed that bug thanks to his cooperation, and you
can see the result of our bug report and conversation here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Qubes/comments/57acz8/add_a_leakproof_vpn_to_your_qubes_os_with_this/

The second piece of great news is that, based on what he reported there,
ABSOLUTELY NO TRAFFIC ever leaked from his VPN-protected AppVM to any
sort of network device, as the VPN VM still prevented the traffic from
going anywhere else except over the VPN.

That means: even under an environment where a critical bug rendered VPN
operation impossible, Qubes VPN still managed to prevent leaks 100%.

I am quite happy to see that the engineering gone into this thing
actually paid off big time.

Have you tried Qubes VPN yet?
