Re: [qubes-users] Remove original Template-VM, keeping the package for reinstallation
Hi. I think that was only half of the answer. I have had this problem too: of removing original templates; ie- debian-9, fedora-26. The documentation; https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/remove-vm-manually/ is only viable via templates that are not "installed by (system/dom0)". The GUI gives the error "You cannot remove templates that were installed by (system/dom0)". The TTY gives that error plus many more, even when following the documentation above. I had to reinstall my entire system because I interrupted a backup restore and the restore gave me too many templates that were "installed by system": debian-9; debian-9-1; fedora-26; fedora-26-1 A small bug that should be noted: sometimes when deleting qubes, they still have a target.wants at boot. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "qubes-users" group. You say "why do so many people bash purism" well they have done more than enough to deserve it - and last I checked I am the only one doing so whereas they employ plenty of shills and even probably pay journalists to issue glorified press releasesthe tech media adores purism and refuses to publish the real facts or even just some articles on their honest competitors and I wonder why that is. Because of their dishonest marketing they've ruined the idea of what a free laptop should look like in the head of the average person, sucked away money from honest companies and prevented the existence of crowdfunding campaigns or start-ups selling actually libre laptops - all of these are bad. Re: [qubes-users] Guide on installing Qubes and Coreboot with encrypted boot on thinkpads
G as in g-money? hehe just had to say that. The ME is capable of presenting a fake "softTPM" software based TPM but in this case I doubt that is what the X220 has - and there is no reason as to why a TPM shouldn't work with a cleaned ME as it doesn't involve the ME it communicates directly on the LPC bus. I also must note for everyone that it is impossible to disable ME - the ME_Cleaner software and the HAP bit do not disable ME the kernel does in fact run before it shuts off via HAP which is plenty of time to perform a litany of dirty tricksthat is if you trust ME saying that it is shutting down (there is no way to verify this without million dollar equipment) a truly disabled ME could have its CPU physically disconnected and the platform not work or at the least be able to function without the ME blob without shutting off after 30 minutes which will happen even with the HAP bit. Of course I must mention that TXT is an intel gimmick that isn't actually required to have an effective AEM setup, it just means that with it you can slightly change kernel bios etc and not have to re-seal which isn't at all necessary. I suggest posting on the coreboot ML to inqure as to why it isn't working - the aptitude level there is higher and someone will probably be able to assist. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "qubes-users" group. Re: [qubes-users] How do I load firmware-atheros into Qubes 4.0 R5?
I believe in this case you should be contacting your vendor for technical support - you certainly paid more than enough to deserve some. I have several questions for you: I am curious did you know pre-purchase that purisms laptops are not actually libre, that their ME isn't disabled and that the firmware is not "open source firmware"? (The hardware initiation process is entirely closed source performed via Intel's FSP binary blobs - these days unfortunately "coreboot" doesn't really mean open source firmware) I am also curious as to what lead to them instead of for instance the actually owner controlled lenovo G505S for only $300 - it is a little bit slower but the recc'ed A10 CPU is quad core (better for qubes), the CPU/RAM init is open source, there is no ME/PSP and Thank you for answering them Purism fact sheet: "Disabled ME": It is impossible to disable ME, the HAP bit and ME_Cleaner simply nerf it - however the kernel and any mask roms still run and have more than enough time and code size to perform a litany of dirty tricks. "we hand select every chip to respect your privacy and freedom" *in reality the laptop is probably just a re-badged whitebox model (you can't have a custom motherboard run for the volumes they are dealing with and even an FSP coreboot port takes $100K+ sucking up a lot of their resources) "We will convince intel to open source XYZ": Google attempted to get intel to open up ME and FSP for their coreboot chromebook project but even they were re-buffed - if they can't do it then a small company certainly can't nor would they have the resources to backport it to the many laptops they already have released. "We are doing the best we can" Wrong. There are companies that are releasing real libre firmware computers, brand new and fast, fully open source and owner controlled (but purism doesn't want you to know that) -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "qubes-users" group. I am in the market for a graphics card, or more specifically increasing the number of ports as I am going from 2 -> 4 monitors. I figure I am going to need to get a graphics card for this that has a minimum of 2 ports. I have read quite a few posts regarding problems with NVIDA and AMD/ATI cards/chipsets, but they seem to be my only option. From the posts I saw it kinda seems that the AMD/ATI works a bit better, thoughts? I am hoping those out there who have had "plug in and it just works" experiences with graphics cards can chime in with their recommendations. I am also hoping to get something as "future proof" as possible, so it will admittedly be a balance, that said I don't need bleeding edge either as I am not a gamer and don't do too much with video (does video encoding count?). I must have a minimum of two ports Other preferences are: * I really really really want something that will work outa the box, not really interested in recompiling the kernel as I have some seriously defunt kernel karma * DisplayPort would be nice but DVI will be fine * low profile (hopefully not too wishful of thinking for a 2+ port card), my box is actually pretty small. * Lots memory I guess? * Passively cooled would be nice. In terms of expansion slots my box has 1 PCI-E X16 Gen2.0 (supports 3.0? not wholly sure about this) and 1PCI-E X4 Oh, and on this machine I am using 3.2 but will of course upgrade to 4.0 once its final. Taiidan suggested the WX4100 (thx!) which looks awesome but it a bit outside my price range. I found the AMD Radeon Pro WX 2100 (https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA6ZP5X42735). That seems to be pretty much the same, or more like a step down but similar otherwise. Should that work ok with Qubes 4.0? It has 3 ports, is low profile, supports 4k, etc which I think will suffice for me. Any confirmation that this should work with Qubes 4.x w/o modifications would really be appreciated! -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "qubes-users" group. Hi, The qubes/whonix onion repos have been down for the past week or so, but they're actually back up now so they should be working. I don't know about whonix 14 though, I thought the current version was still 13. Is it a beta version? Anyways maybe try establishing a new tor circuit? Or maybe just wait a while. You could always just use the clearnet repos temporarily, but the onion repos are working for me now. -Jackie -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "qubes-users" group. I think I used testing. and tor stopped working. So I deleted all the sys-whonix and used the qubes stack to reinstall them and tor is now working again. Just found it strange. [qubes-users] fedora-26-dvm always shows updates pending, can't delete it.
Upgraded to 4.0. was able to restore all my backup vms no problems. Only issues i had was had to keep doing qvm-appmenus-sync on vms. Another problem was I selected whonix as updatevm during installation, which meant fedora-26 didn't update. I believe this is a known issue? I followed suggestion here: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!searchin/qubes-users/failed$20to$20synchronize$20cache$20%7Csort:date/qubes-users/gLqORddxb-Y/VEe-SNwCBAAJ and made all qubes update proxy entries changed from sys-whonix to sys-firewall. But does this mean dom0 is not really using tor to update? Is whonix even using tor to update after doing this? I'm confused. Also I managed to figure out how to created a new dvm template based off a cloned os template. And i won't go into all the bugs with the qube-manager I'm sure they are known. Like organizing by vm type is not the same as in 3.2 and its very confusing having to keep refresh it. But its driving me nuts that the default fedora-26-dvm always shows updates pending. and I don't know how to get rid of it. I even changed its template and it still shows updates pending and it won't let me delete altogether so I can just use my custom one. Any solution to this? Then import it as shown on docs. gpg --import qubes-master-signing-key.asc Then import the PGP release key the same way. Then verifyy the .asc file with the iso as shown on docs. gpg -v --verify ascfile isofile Then doublecheck the release 4 signature key shown is signed with the qubes master key as shown in docs as the last step with gpg --list-sig -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "qubes-users" group. I have the iso asc, the digests file, and the signing key asc. Can someone help me through this? Thank you, Steven Here is a condensed howto which avoids some issues with the Qubes doc and gpg itself: https://www.qubes-os.org/security/verifying-signatures/ 1. Get the Qubes master key, preferably from more than one source or network channel so you can check they are all identical. https://keys.qubes-os.org/keys/qubes-master-signing-key.asc 2. Get the signing key and iso files, as you already have. 3. Import the two keys: $ gpg2 --import qubes-master-signing-key.asc $ gpg2 --import qubes-release-4-signing-key.asc 3a. If you wish, additional verification of the Master key: $ gpg2 --fingerprint pub rsa4096 2010-04-01 [SC] 427F 11FD 0FAA 4B08 0123 F01C DDFA 1A3E 3687 9494 uid [ unknown] Qubes Master Signing Key Then search for the Qubes master key fingerprint on a Google or a keyserver, or view the 'verifying-signatures' doc linked above. Then compare that hexadecimal fingerprint and make sure whats in your shell matches what you see in the browser. 4. Verify the release key: $ gpg2 --check-sigs The output should look like this: > pub rsa4096 2017-03-06 [SC] > 5817A43B283DE5A9181A522E1848792F9E2795E9 > uid [ unknown] Qubes OS Release 4 Signing Key > sig!31848792F9E2795E9 2017-03-06 Qubes OS Release 4 Signing Key > sig! DDFA1A3E36879494 2017-03-08 Qubes Master Signing Key You should see the Release 4 key in "uid" and nested under it the Master key. The Master key line must begin with "sig!" including the exclamation mark! If the exclamation is not present then the key is bad. 5. Verify the iso file: $ gpg2 --verify Qubes-R4.0-x86_64.iso.asc Qubes-R4.0-x86_64.iso You should see a message "Good signature from "Qubes OS Release 4 Signing Key" Hope this helps! -- Chris Laprise, tas...@posteo.net https://github.com/tasket https://twitter.com/ttaskett PGP: BEE2 20C5 356E 764A 73EB 4AB3 1DC4 D106 F07F 1886 -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "qubes-users" group.
