[qubes-users] How to Upgrade an Application in VM

2020-01-04 Thread Ray Joseph
Qubes R4.0.2 rc3

I would like to get the latest Sagemath and Jupyter on a VM.

I am using the Fedora 30 tempateVM which I updated from 29. I then cloned
the Fedora 30, and added sagemath with:
dnf install sagemath

Is there a term for this type of installation?

The next version of sagemath is to have full Python 3 capabilities.

I am concerned on how to install the latest because when I made the initial
sagemath the newest version was 8.9 but the install was 8.8. When the next
version comes out, I would like to assure I get the latest.

How do I get the latest?

What concerns/risks should I consider for this installation?

[qubes-users] Installation Failure of Sagemath - More space needed on the filesystem

2019-12-22 Thread Ray Joseph

I am trying to install Sagemath using:

sudo dnf install sagemath

which failed.

Template: fedora-30

This vm was started with default private/system storage 7 GB/10 GB.

Initial memory 400 MB

Max memory 4000 MB

VCPUs no.: 2

Mode: PVH

The installation transaction summary reports:

Install 893 packages

Total download size: 1.1 G

Installed size: 4.1 G

I answer yes to install.

The system progresses through a portion of the installation and ends with:

Error Summary

Disk Requirements:

At least 1506GB more space needed for the / filesystem

The second to the last report line is the installation of sagetwx which
needs 1504MB. Then

the last entry is sagemath which needs 1506MB.

The last entry memory requirement matches the error report for 1506MB.
More may be required.

Qube Manager showed Disk usage for the VM to be zero. I closed the manager
and reopened. It then showed 216.78 MiB. [Is there a way to make this
update in realtime?]

The system storage is (10 GB) is grayed out. I don't see how to change it
but I don't expect that to be a solution.

I stopped the VM, increased the private storage to 9.2 GB, restarted the
VM, repeated the installation command, and received a similar error.

Error Summary

Disk Requirements:

At least 1480GB more space needed for the / filesystem

The second to the last report line is the installation of sagetwx which
needs 1477MB. Then

the last entry is sagemath which needs 1480MB.

The last entry memory requirement matches the error report for 1480MB. It
is curious the space requirements were not the same between the two runs,
the failure occurred at the same point even though the memory was increased
by about 2 GB.

I closed the manager and reopened. It again showed 216.78 MiB.

Can I expect that the installation report on storage sizes is accurate?

The system storage is (10 GB) is grayed out. I don't see how to change it
but I don't expect that to be a solution.

How might I progress?

Thank you for the info.

The sys-usb showed up in the qube manager. Clicking start on the
start/resart context menu initiated start up. An error window popped up
pointing to the log file you indicate, libxl-driver.log. The log reported:

I changed the setting to PV (the only choice). A note opened stating

I selected start from the qube manager sys-usb item. A note popped up
stating it started, then the same error message was reported.

Note:

I previously selected both USB controllers in sys-usb Devices.

On removing the erroring controller (14.0): Resulted in the same error.

On removing the other controller (no controllers selected): Resulted in

To be sure I went into Qube Manager, sys-usb->Qubes Setting->Devices and
used the "Configure strict reset for PCI devices" button to set it on
00:14.0.

I opened sys-usb settings and found the controller listed in the settings
pane (on the right). The control button/bar at the bottom entitled
"Configure strict reset for PCI devices". I clicked on the controller in
the ‘selected’ window, then clicked the strict reset button. The
controller was then highlighted. After applying the changes, I restarted
sys-usb. It worked.

It was unclear that the controller did not already have the strict reset
button ‘on’.

The newly built vm uses the usb mouse.

It is curious that the mouse is also active in dom0.

I am using a windows laptop to take notes and work the web including this
session. While the mouse works on dom0 on the other machine and the vm, it
does not work on the windows machine (probably because it is not plugged
into it). I am excited to learn how to work in qubes – being able to jump
from dom0 to vms, take notes, post messages, email smoothly.

one made it through the installation.

I do not know if it did it without error as I don't have networking or USB, but
that may be me.

jrsm,

Thank you, that was a lot of info. This took me to here:

4 succeeded and 1 failed.

In sequence:

Function: file.append
Name: /etc/default/grub
... This one succeeded

ID: grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg
Function: cmd.run

Function: qvm.prefs
Name: sys-net
Result: False
Comment: The following requisition were not found:

Then there were two other successes for:
ID: qubes-input-proxy
ID: sys-usb-input-proxy

That was the complete emission. I guess the failure signal was the 'Result:
False" and all the text was in red.

I have checked the terms in the emission but was not able to find anything that
looked relevant.

It is not clear why sys-net was addressed in the usb process. But I do recall
that a usb controller was installed in the sys-net but no wifi. While I have
read some about the possibility of using sys-net for usb functions, I don't
recall any reference to the installation doing that.

Any suggestions?

Re: [qubes-users] Can't Start Network, V4

2019-04-08 Thread Ray Joseph
Thank you for your support. I don't know what 'panel' I should see the
nm-applet opening in. I opened a terminal in sys-net and entered nm-applet and
obtained a response that said it was not meant to run in terminal and to use
NetworkManager in the desktop. I don't see a way to open a desktop in sys-net.

BTW, my little Linux background is Debian and almost all of it was at the
command line using /etc/network/interfaces. My intent was to use Debian to run
Xen. But I was not able to find a way to get Debian/Xen to use wireless.
Qubes doesn't have this problem, if I can just discover how.

[qubes-users] New Install is Missing sys-USB, How to recover

2019-04-06 Thread Ray Joseph
I have newly installed R4.0 on a Toshiba laptop whichis wirelssonly. There is
no sys-USB listed in Qubes Manager. How should I 'get' one?

How do I determine if my keyboard and mouse pad are on a USB controller? How
should this affect the configuration of sys-USB?

There are two USB controllers:
00:14:0 ...Intel Wildcat Point-LP USB xHCL Controller
00:1d:0 ...Intel Wildcat Point-LP USB EHCL Controller

After installation, sys-net did not work. The USB controller was assigned to
it rather than the nic. That is fixed.

This may be an installation issue. Is there a wrong way to install that may
result in this behaviour? If so, how can I install again and not make the same
mistake?

Thank you

I would like to config sys-net to access my wireless AP. I have not found a
method to config the network. I looked for /etc/network/interface to see if
anything was there but the network folder does not exist.

I found suggestions that I could get to them via sys-net settings. I have

How do I define my AP connections?

[qubes-users] Missing sys-USB, Reinstall?

2019-04-05 Thread Ray Joseph
I have recently install V4 on a laptop. I noticed there is no sys-USB.

What is the appropriate method to produce one?

I currently have no network connection either. The newly installed system had
sys-net attached with the two USB controllers and no nic. So I removed the two
USB controllers and added the nic. The vm no longer errors out when booted.

I am concerned there may be more problems I have not seen yet. This is a new
install; is there something I did wrong that would have caused these error? I
am going on two weeks trying to fix what I have.

Should I just attempt to reinstall? I don't know what I should do differently.

Any suggestions?

unman,

Thank you.

On opening sys-net, there were two USB controllers already attached, one was
00:14.0. So I removed both and added the nic. Sys-net is now running.

So I now want to test it. I thought I could just open a vm such as debian, but
I found it says it can't have networking. Further reading said networking can
be enabled in the Basic tab. I am guessing sys-firewall should be the choice.
Then connect with Tor.

Bootstrap phase stuck on 5% (10 minutes before I stopped it). There is only
one AP and it is open (out of my control).

Any suggestions on progressing?

Thank you for the trip through the qube. Currently, sys-net is still not
working. I have tried both strict and not. And I have rebooted also rebooted
after the change.

What looks odd is under sys-net device, the wireless card number is 02:00.0 and
reports my card. The error message states 00:14.0 which is called out in the
device as USB controller.

This appears to mean it is trying to use the USB for the network IF.

Further -
I initiated a qvm-start for sys-usb which produced:

display.
The CLI returned:
Start failed: internal error: Unable to reset PCI device :00:14.0:
internal error: libxenlight failed to create new domain 'sys-usb'

When I execute:
qvm-pci attach --persistent -o no-strict-reset=True sys-usb dom0:00_14.0
an error is produced:
"'device dom0:00_14.0 of class pci already attached to sys-usb'"

Since I don't know if this means the attachment is persistent (it was
repeatable after a reboot), I attempted to detached
qvm-pci detach sys-usb dom0:00_14.0
qvm-pci detach sys-usb dom0:00_1d.0

Using qvm-pci list, both were gone, no longer listed.
So I again performed the attachment as above.
Both instances are back in. I do not see any difference from that display.

I started up sys-usb from CLI and received the same error about libxenlight
failing.

Re: [qubes-users] Where is Chrome once installed?

2017-12-04 Thread Ray Joseph
How to do I get Chrome up?

The instructions worked great:
I right clicked on the desktop, highlited 'personal', selected Firefox from the
context menu.
Firefoxed worked, so I navigated to this forum, found this thread and copied
the line to install Chromium.

I opened a Fedora25 template, terminal and
input -
sudo dnf install --enablerepo=google-chrome google-chrome-stable

answered 'yes' a couple of times and success. It was done.

Back to dom0, right click on the desktop, selected applications, right clicked
on Fedora 25 template and there was no Chromium, which I expected to look just
like the personal Firefox.

Did I do something wrong? What might I have missed?

BTW, I am a newbie, I have installed v3.2 for a couple weeks, moved to v4.0
(experienced unstable USB), and loaded v4.0 rc1, rc2, and now rc3. USB keeps
getting more stable. Sometimes the laptop still boots up without a keyboard or
mouse.

Re: [qubes-users] How to Setup Wireless

2017-11-24 Thread Ray Joseph
Yuraeitha,

Thank you. That was great detail.

I think I will redirect output to one continuos file to collect all VM info
and use that file to record my progress.

My biggest obstacle is that when the machine boots up, I do not always get
a keyboard (laptop). Plugging in a USB keyboard and mouse does not always
work

Maybe this is related to the VMs. My fist install of V4 was with a docking
station attached. Keyboard and mouse functionality was intermittent but if
the embedded set did not work, I could plug kbd into the laptop USB slots
or docking station. To fix this, I reinstalled V4 without the docking
station. The kbd is less predictable/controllable.

In both cases, I have found that repeated reboots sometimes production es a
functioning keyboard. I have also found that letting the laptop sit for a
while will sometimes provide the keyboard. This latter feature is what
leads me to consider that service VMs may be at play.

I have "newly" loaded the latest two versions of Debian over 30 times and 3
installs of Qubes-os. I am open to experimenting. My challenge with
Debian was getting wireless to work with Xen bridging.

[qubes-users] Reinstallation Failure

The reinstallation of v4.0 rC2 fails with:

[ 10.347896] dracut-pre-udev[460]: rpc.idmapd: conf-reinit: open(“(null))”,

The above progresses to a graphic display with a large Q in the middle near the
bottom of the screen. A progress bar below that shows installation has started
but it never progresses. I turn it off after 30 mins.

v4.0 RC2 was running on this Toshiba laptop. I wanted to update the BIOS. I
could not find a way to do that with the OS. So I put Windows 10 on it, rant
the BIOS update, booted to Windows 10 a couple times then tried to install
Qubes.

Searching the web, I found sub=phrases of the above but could not find any
specifics and the higher level dracut problems seem to have been resolves in
previous version.

Please suggest how I might trouble shoot this.

[qubes-users] How to Setup Wireless

2017-10-29 Thread Ray Joseph
How do I enter my password? In Debian9, I installed wpa_supplicant to include
a key in network/interfaces. Should this same method be used for sys-net?

Where would I find this type of information. Searching the Qubes-OS doc, I
only found one reference to wireless and that was how to unload and load the
wirel drivers.

BTW, I had cloned sys-net vm to experiment. But it would not start. Andrew
pointed to developer docs where it was stated that a vm that would use a device
already in use will not start.
https://github.com/QubesOS/qubes-issues/issues?q=is%3Aopen+is%3Aissue+label%3A%22C%3A+doc%22

Just for the record, since I will probably forget that.

Thanks,
Ray

[qubes-users] How to Get Wireless Network Connected

2017-10-28 Thread Ray Joseph
I would like to get networking running on v3.2. I installed from a download to
a USB from Debian 8. I have now replaced Debian 8 with Qubes OS v3.2. When
installing, I had both a w ireless hotspot and a USB3 connected Ethernew dock.
Neither one worked on boot up.

I am running version 3.2 on a Toshiba laptop. I have used this machine to run
Debian 8 with wireless. I am not getting a connection.

I get an error window about 120 seconds after booting:
   ERROR: Tor Bootstrap Result:
   Whonixcheck gave up waiting.
   Tor Circuit: not established
   Bootstrapping 5% done
...
   Possible issues:
 - is the host's internet connection working?
 - Whonix-Gateway will need a few moments for bootstrapping the Tor network.
 - Do you live in a censored area?

I am using the same Verizon access point I used on Debian. A listing of points
from a terminal in sys-net shows the access point.

Inside sys-net:
  dmesg | grep iwlwifi produces:
Direct firmware load for iwlwifi-7265D-19 failed with error -2
Direct firmware load for iwlwifi-7265D-18 failed with error -2
Direct firmware load for iwlwifi-7265D-17 failed with error -2
Loaded firmware version 16.242414.0 op_mode iwlmvm
...
wlp0s0: renamed from wlan0

I have some concerns:
1) The system is trying 7265D-19, -18, -17, and fails then loads -16. In
Debian, it tried 25, 24, 23 and loaded 22. It would not load 26 which is the
newest I could find. Is there a concern for using such old drivers? If so, is
there anything I should do?
2) The wifi name was renamed. Where does this happen and why? Are there any
implications?

lsmod shows the iwlmvm and iwlwifi are loaded.

modinfo iwlmvm shows iwlwifi,mac80211,cfg80211

ip a
shows wlp0s0 to be down.
ifup wlp0s0 says it is not configured.

sudo rmmod iwlmvm says it is not loaded.
sudo modprobe iwlmvm there was no response

ip a shows wlp0s0 still down.

I am not sure where to go from here.

Any help would be appreciated. I plan to change to v4.0 this coming week.

This solution looks appropriate. I am new to quebes and found the vm manager
challenging using v3.2. I have not tried v4. But I am not familiar with the
xfce bar and the pictures didn't look like the xfce panel on v32.

I will move to v4 this coming week. I did not getting anything working on
v3.2, I would like to get to a better start on v4. I would apprecitate any
suggestions on how to better use the tools provided to manage vms.

The increase font selection only changes the font for the sign-on screen, not

I compared the output of the screen after a keyboard/touchpad failure and a
successful boot. The FAILURE lines are still there:
[FAILED] Failed to start Load Kernel Modules.
See 'systemctl status systemd-modules-load.service' for details.
[ 10.108174] systemctl[1]: Failed to start Load Kernel Modules.

The 'OK' lines were still there.

The last three lines were missing:
  Starting Show Plymouth Boot Screen...
  Starting dracut initqueue hook...
  11.851549] [drm:intel_dp_link_training-channel_equalization [i915]] *ERROR
5.4 Gbp link rate without HBR2/TPS3 support

[qubes-users] Safe Modifications Method for netvm

2017-10-23 Thread Ray Joseph
I would like to assure that I have a safe way to modify netvm. I want to test
configuring of a eth port and a wireless port.

I would like to have a copy of the original, and keep copies of my test vms and
possibly keep two (one wired one wireless) for normal use.

I don't know how to copy a vm none the less a safe method to develop
modifications, versions and release versions.

I would like to understand how to carry out these type of tasks in qubes.

Thanks,
Ray

[qubes-users] Newbie Network Trouble Shooting

2017-10-21 Thread Ray Joseph
Networking is not working on my new installation. After boot and a couple
minutes, an error window opens stating problems with Whonix. It address a
difficulty in working with Tor.

I would like to look into networking but I don't know which VM(s) setup the
network. My networks available are an Ethernet through the USB3 port to a
docking station to a corporate/guest portal. I have used this with Debian 8 on
this same laptop before loading up Qubes. The other network is wireless with a
Verizon hotspot which also worked with Debian 8 on the same machine.

For example, to run the wireless network, I would like to know which VM to
provide the ID and password. And what is the appropriate method in Qubes to
enter these?

[qubes-users] Re: Keyboard and Mouse Pad not Working [Solved]

I have continued experimenting and and ran into to losing the input devices
again. A day or so later, the I/O would come back up, and they go away again.

As I am relatively new to Linux, I dumped the journal to file and pulled it
into Excel. I tagged those sections where I had not I/O; filtered, color
coded, sorted. I could not find a correlation between no I/O and journal
entries. Is there another resource I should be looking at?

I have just found that the laptop time/date was off. So I went into the BIOS
and set it to UTC. When it booted up, I/O was available. I have rebooted a
couple times and I/O has been available each time.

I don't know if this is 'fixed'.

When the I/O was not available, I took pictures of messages during the boot
process and transcribed them (partially):
[FAILED] Failed to start Load Kernel Modules.
See 'systemctl status systemd-modules-load.service' for details.
[ 10.108174] systemctl[1]: Failed to start Load Kernel Modules.
OK
OK...
Starting Show Plymouth Boot Screen...
Starting dracut initqueue hook...
11.851549] [drm:intel_dp_link_training-channel_equalization [i915]] *ERROR 5.4
Gbp link rate without HBR2/TPS3 support

After reading the above error, I went back to the journal file and found that
'failed' showed up often in the file when there was no I/O. I will study this
further to see if I can get a better idea of what is happening.

BTW, I web searched for the above error and found this error to have occurred
in fedora and ubuntu; but those were consistent - they were not intermittent.
I never found whether there was a related I/O failure.

If anything changes, I will report it back here.

Hugo,

You have gotten farther than I have; I have not gotten a VM up yet. But I
don't think that changing properties in dom0 will change anything in VMs. I
would think this would need to be done in the VM. I wonder if it would work by
doing it in a template.

Good luck,

[qubes-users] Re: How to Make APP Fonts Larger [Solved]

2017-10-03 Thread Ray Joseph
I found that right clicking on the desktop produced a menu with the item
Applications. This has a menu item System Tools. The included item here is
Appearance. The tab in Appearance is Fonts. This is where it gets fun. The
Default font changes the fonts right on the app so it has instant feedback. At
the bottom of this Appearance window is a Custom DPI setting. Luckily, I had a
terminal open. Where I really had a challenge with font size is in the
terminal. By increasing the DPI, the terminal fonts grew. They grew so fast
that all the fonts went off the page. I just hit the Enter/Return key and it
was aligned again. I increased the DPI to 164 and the terminal was just what I
needed.

I hope this helps others. I sure it will help me the next time I reload the
system and have forgotten what to do.

[qubes-users] How to Make APP Fonts Larger

2017-10-03 Thread Ray Joseph
I just installed R3.2 on a Toshiba Satellite. I had been running Debian 9.
The laptop has a 4k display. The fonts in the apps are very small. I found
that I can increase the size of fonts for desktop icons.
How can I increase the font size on the apps?

Thank you,
Ray

[qubes-users] Keyboard and Mouse Pad not Working

2017-10-03 Thread Ray Joseph
I just installed R3.2 on a Toshiba Satellite. I had been running Debian 9.
I installed to a USB drive with dd after checking signatures.
The installation went fine use the mouse pad and keyboard.

After installation and reboot, I selected defaults and the sign on screen came
up. It did not respond to either laptop keyboard or mouse pad. So I plugged
in a USB mouse, it worked fine but there was no response to the laptop
keyboard. I plugged in a USB keyboard and was able to sign in and navigate
around.

I have looked up a variety of issues on laptop keyboards, but those that seem
close address files in the /etc folder which Qube doesn't seem to have.

1) How can I pursue the making the laptop keyboard and mouse work?
2) Where can I find a graphic of the Qube folder structure?

Thank you,
Ray
