Plastic bags first, then some packaging stretch film, them some clear packing tape to secure the stretch film. Zip tie the pipe insulation. I do the above routine for the seat, and shifty bits on the handlebars. Carry the tape & film with you on the trip, you can make repairs at rest stops.

Super 77 spray glue. Way less expansive than Gorilla Glue. Wait for it to set up for 30 seconds then slip on. Some will squirt out, just have a rag handy. You need a good coating, but that's any glue. We have glued hundreds of grips on using that spray glue. Never slips. -James /
