I had a good LBS install a Chris King on my Sam over the winter after the original Tange started feeling wonky. Granted, the Tange was installed by Riv but set-up by me, which easily explains the issue! ;) The Chris King is beautiful. I agree with Ryan that going with the best for parts you

I think Jan Heine once said needle bearing headsets help. I read somewhere that the one he prefers (Miche, I think?) is, of course, out of production. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. To view this discussion on the web visit

[RBW] Re: Cracked B.17 Tension Bolt-- What to do?

2011-07-26 Thread Peter Pesce
In the absolute worst case, you can always send it back to Brooks and have them repair it. It won't be free, but you won't have lost your well-broken-in saddle either. I'm sure even if you tried a DIY and botched it (not a major botch, but a minor one) Brooks would bail you out in the end. They

2011-07-26 Thread Peter Pesce
It's pretty common to find Ibex, Icebreaker and Smartwool stuff on sale with a bit of patience. Probably easier in August! Ibex quality is great, but their sizing and cut is often a bit odd, so it's important to try before you buy if possible. -- You received this message because you are

[RBW] Re: How much should a bike cost?

2011-07-26 Thread Peter Pesce
It should cost as much as the market will bear. Bike building is a for-profit enterprise, not a charity, and there is no morally-correct value to a bike. That being said, I do agree that there is a place for value judgments in HOW a company makes the bike and sells it, that involves labor

2011-07-22 Thread Peter Pesce
I don't think it's so hard to imagine buying a bike from someone other than Riv. Are we all really sharing our justifications for cheating on Riv with another company? :) First, I am what seems to be an atypical Riv owner, at least based on this group. My Sam is by far the nicest (and, by a

[RBW] San Marcos Selling

2011-07-22 Thread Peter Pesce
Per the Riv site: We're down to two 54s as of July 22. More in a few months So they got in 15 on the 12th, and in 10 days are down to 2? I'm guessing a bunch were pre-sold, but wither way I'm glad they are a hit! -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW

Oh. I interpreted it to mean all they had left of the 15 was two 54's.(seeing as how Ri'vs seem to sell out in the big sizes first) It didn't occur to me they might mean they have only two 54's but still have 5 each of the 59's and 63's. My bad if the excitement was premature. -- You received

I'm in southwestern CT (Norwalk to be exact) and might be able to join for a bit. Originally from RI, so I know and have visited a lot of the places on the Maritime segment, but not on a bike, so it would be very interesting. The traffic isn't so bad along the shore in October. Keep us posted.

[RBW] The New Green Sam

2011-07-20 Thread Peter Pesce
Not to start THAT discussion again, but that 56 looks seriously over-tubed IMHO. I'm glad my 60 Sam is singletubeorange. I think the Utube is polarizing, and can't imagine why Riv wants to make it harder to sell bikes than it already seems to be these days. Though, in truth, when your riding

If the Yves is basically a Sam with a mixte-tube, then you should have no problem. Aside from durability, I think MTB drivetrains are mainly about having enough chain wrap capacity to use a really small stump-puller front ring. The ONLY thing I can think of is some front deraillers have a very

I'm not sure how the automatic head is supposed to work given the picture on the box. You need something to push the pin on the valve down to let air in - in either presta or schraeder mode. I have the HPX classic and you can see here there is a pointy-thing inside the valve head that pushes

Seems to me it might be a matter of paint. Grant mentioned in that recent interview that he was hoping to sell his new city bike for around $750, unpainted. People seem to generally agree that it cost around $300 (retail) to paint a bike. The Maxway Sam is $1000, so that makes perfect sense.
