Brian, this thread may be exhausted but for what it’s worth I built up two sets
of Sun rims this year. 26” Rhyno-Lite and 700c CR-18.
The Rhyno-Lites built up fine and I mounted Compass1.75s on them w/o much
difficulty.
The 700s were a different story. Front wheel went together okay. The rear
Thanks for all the replies! As always, this group is super helpful.
I'll definitely bring the wheel to my mechanic as Bill recommends and see
if he can get the tire on/off easily. If not, I may have to bite the bullet
and go back to OpenPros or A719s. Which means getting my brand new wheels
FWIW, I swore off using an SUN CR-18's after I ended up with 3 sets of
wheels built with the defective (slightly too large) rims. Getting any tire
on or off was chore. Roadside flats were a nightmare.
I once had a Nexus 8 Speed internal hubbed whee/tire l pick up a staple,
and go flat. I was
I've had the same problem. Mostly with the older rims like Mavic MA40's and
their equivalents and Model 58's. Have pinched a couplafew tubes getting
Bon Jon Passes 35's on. I don't remember having problems with CR-18's
though.

There's a product Stan's No Tubes sells just for this problem as I've
encountered this with setting up tubeless. Can't remember the name but a
small bottle with applicator rubbed on the rim/tire and whatever the liquid
really does help with getting the tire on. Take a look.
On Thursday,
Thanks, Patrick. Good to hear.

I've been considering those same Compass Snoqualmie Pass tires but this
gives me pause. Does anyone have experience with these on 700cMavic A-719
rims?
Thx,

Based on my experience, it may be more related to tubeless rims rather than
supple tires. This fall I had an 8 year old 650B Velocity Synergy rear rim
crack. I had a local frame builder/mechanic build an new wheel. He wasn't
able to order a Synergy, so he got an A-23. I had just switched from

Ironically, my VO wheels with their own rims are a perfect match to Rat Trap
Pass tires!
I had a wheelset from VO with rims from that CR18 oversized batch. Fucking
horrendous. I blame the rim in that case.

Barlow pass tires were my first foray into the world of supple. Mounted them on
sun cr18 and they were by far the hardest tires I've ever mounted. Didn't take
30 minutes, and I'm not afraid to ride the bike, but I did note how difficult
they were.

Hi Eric,
I am running Snoqualmie Pass tires on CR18s and while a little tight,
they're not overly difficult to mount. I did use Stan's tape on those as I
was out of cloth rim tape so maybe that is what helped.

Do you have other tubeless-compatible wheelsets? Among your 2, 3, 6
tubeless compatible wheelsets, are your A-23s unusually or uniquely
different from all the other tubeless compatible wheelsets in your stable?

I believe there were indeed a batch of CR-18s made several years ago that
were out of specification; the diameter was larger than 622 mm. I don't
know if they were mis-labeled 630 mm (aka 27") rims or just bad quality
control.
Perhaps yours were from that batch? Where and when did you
Hi Bill-
Yep, I used Stan's tubeless rim tape on the A23s as specified. I don't
remember them being quite as bad as the Sun rims, but they were still
difficult. I'm a pretty mediocre home mechanic and I'm sure I could improve
my technique, but I also rarely require more than on tire lever even
A-23 rims are tubeless compatible. This means you should/must use tubeless
rim tape, even if you are running tubes. Stans, or an equivalent thin,
slippery rim tape is necessary, unless you want to make your life
miserable. What rim tape are you using?

The only supple tires I've tried were the Soma C-Lines. My Atlantis has
Mavic A-719 rims, and both the Somas and various Schwalbes have mounted
easily by hand. I think there's enough difference in rims that a tire that
may be tight on one could be an easy install on another brand or
