[RBW] 1995 Road Standard Rebuild

One of them has a parts list for those interested in that sort of thing.
Took it for 40 casual miles yesterday with a small group and it was very
nice, other than being the first ride on a new B-17 saddle. Temps were in
the 30s and 40s and I wore a pair of MUSA pants (from the sale) over Merino
Skins tights (over wool boxers). That felt great.

[RBW] Re: 1995 Road Standard Rebuild

2012-01-15 Thread Bill M.
I've run 32 mm Vittoria Rando Hypers on my Road Std. On 23 mm wide
Velocity A23's they measure 34 mm wide, probably pretty close to a 35
mm Pasela. I didn't really expect them to fit but tried them anyway
and was surprised that they do. The chainstay clearance is indeed
tight. The rear wheeel has to be pulled way back to get every
possible mm. Probably wouldn't with a broken spoke, though.

The frame looks great. Nice paint detailing on the crown and the
seatstay caps. The contrasting lugs really show off how well they
play with the head badge. Mine is dark green with no contrasting head
tube and the lug shapes don't show up so well.

2012-01-15 Thread RonaTD
Let's try June 1-3 in Red Wing, MN.

The only conflict I know of so far is that the Great Lakes Randonneurs
have an event that weekend (200-600k options). It's not a show stopper
- I don't know how many potential Riv Rally attendees are also GLR
riders. The GLR schedule also has events 5/19 (200-300k) and 6/16
(200-600k).

[RBW] Re: Date and rough outline for Midwest Riv Rally

2012-01-15 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
Thanks for the update about the brevet schedule, Ted. I briefly considered a
research-based and/or democratic approach to scheduling to avoid these
potential conflicts. I quickly reverted to the equivalent of throwing a dart at
a calendar, with some care to avoid major holidays. I hope the dates I picked
work out for most people, but I am certain that they will conflict with at
least two dozen interesting cycling and non-cycling events, not to mention that
curious but not uncommon personal quirk that prevents some people from
committing to anything in advance.

At least randonneuring has become popular enough that there is now a full
brevet calendar that allows riders numerous opportunities to piece together a
full series.

[RBW] Several retro jerseys for sale

This probably is only very indirectly Rivendellish. I'm selling off
several of my plastic jerseys that are too small for me. No wool, no

even that is racerish. Anyhow, have a look if you are into that kind of
thing. I'm thinking a 5'9 160 pounder would be delighted with any of these

[RBW] V-brake vs canti question

2012-01-15 Thread dougP
Does anyone know if the effort required is the same for V-brakes and
cantis? Or is one easier to pull than the other? The rider in
question has small hands and cannot grip very hard. The bike is an
Atlantis, currently set-up with cantis (salmon pads) Riv's standard
issue Shimano road levers. In the frenzy of the sale, I picked up a
set of V-brakes and Travel Agents just in case. Before I tear into
everything, I'm curious if anyone has made the change noticed a
decrease in required effort. I've heard they can be more powerful but
wonder about the effort.

2012-01-15 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
+1 on v-brakes being easier to pull. We almost always suggest an upgrade to
v-brakes on bikes that come stock with cantilevers, especially when the rider
has less than a Kung-Fu grip. Lots of women have trouble with cantilevers and
drop bar type levers, but even strong manly men like me benefit by the
increased stopping power of v-brakes.

The Anderson House has been closed for a couple of years. Unless
something has changed recently. A shame.

Bigger issue - that is the same weekend as the Tour de Pepin, which
starts in Lake City and goes counter clockwise around Lake Pepin. It
could mean the possibility of hundreds of riders going the opposite
direction. And possibly some attendant bicycle vs traffic headaches.

I'd vote for the following weekend. But would still ride the present
schedule.

Since I took the time to explore the links that Bobby provided, I've
answered most of my questions: It looks like a moderate climb out of
Frostburg for 10+ miles to the Eastern Continental Divide (cool), and then
moderate downhill all the way. Pretty good for an out-of-shape geezer like
me. The GAP looks incredible and I'd really like to ride it; if not on
this trip, in the future. If I decide to join, I will be riding my Bleriot
fitted with Pari-Motos. I assume that this would be sufficient? I would
also still be interested in any details of the ride, especially the first
day. Also, I'm not sure how the second day with possible side trip to
Fallingwater would work, but most likely I would sit out that side trip.
Thanks for planning this Bobby. Cheers, Steve

There are cantilevers, then there are cantilevers, ye olde high profile
Mafac/Paul Neo retro need strong hands, low profile like Avid Shorty 6
or Paul Touring setup with the shortest practical straddle cable will
equal or exceed V brakes.

Cyclocross magazine did the test, hanging a fixed weight from a straddle
cable
and measuring the clamping force of the brakes using a scale, simple
repeatable.
The varied the straddle cable length, shorter = more ummphh on low profile
brakes,
high profile brakes power varied little with different straddle cable
lengths.
Bravo to the magazine for doing quantifiable testing.

[RBW] Re: Date and rough outline for Midwest Riv Rally

2012-01-15 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
Thanks Eric.

It really is impossible to find a Summer weekend free of schedule conflict in
this part of the country. The weekend following the TdP and proposed Midwest
Riv Rally is MS150, of which a few of the 4,000ish riders will undoubtedly be
RBW types, who would be torn between the Rally and a supposedly good cause.

At least the TdP is one day only, going the other direction, and two of the
three route options would not interact with the proposed Riv Rally at all. I'm
tempted to assume that most/all of the Riv Rally people will try my secret
magical back road route, thereby avoiding the Harleys, other cycling events,
and almost everybody else who flocks to Pepin on summer weekends.

2012-01-15 Thread Bruce Herbitter
Thank you for your kind comments Steve. Yes, the bike was painted by Hill
Clarke at Airglow. Longer than quoted required, but well done. The range
embossed on the tire is 55 - 75lbs psi. I tend to start with mid-range and
see how it feels. Softer is very comfy but too slow. Harder is quicker but
less grippy on hard corners ( and I do not hesitate to lay the bike over at
an angle and move smartly around corners) and less comfy, so it has been a
good medium. I have 1,475 flat free miles on them so far. I'm 150 lbs and
the bike is about 22. water, saddle bag and stuff adds say another 10.

think my total bike/rider weight might not be much less than yours.
Anyway, enjoy your bike and whatever weather you're having in the South.

[RBW] Re: Date and rough outline for Midwest Riv Rally

2012-01-15 Thread Forrest
June 9-10 also is TOMRV (Tour of the Mississippi River Valley) in NE Iowa
and NW Illinois. Could be a conflict for a few Midwest Riv types (could be
for me). Probably not a big deal.

Anyway, I'm with Jim about picking event dates (as he has done) and letting
the chips fall where they may.

[RBW] Re: Riv Rally East 2012

2012-01-15 Thread Montclair BobbyB
We still have a few things to work out, including shuttle, lodging,
etc...

The goal of the ride is to appeal to a wide group by making it
interesting and challenging, but not necessarily difficult. The
scenery will be spectacular. No rider will be left behind.

According to the GAP website, distances are as follows:

Frostburg to Confluence: 47 miles, the first 9-10 miles uphill
(gaining approx 500 feet of elevation.. not too severe); then it's all
downhill to Connellsville
Confluence to Connellsville: 28 miles

So the first part of Day 1 will be the most challenging part, and it
will be a fairly full day of riding, albeit at a moderate to leisurely
pace.
Day 2 should be much easier, with or without a sidetrip to
FallingWater.

moderate downhill all the way.

[RBW] Snow Ride with Dad

2012-01-15 Thread Amit Singh
I asked baby bro if he wanted to ride to the grocery store with me and
got a negative ghostwriter. Totally unexpected, Dad said he'd go,
not grocery shopping, but for a ride.

So we're rolling and there's some snow, no problem, we forego the
normal sidewalk to the trail routine in favor of roads ... In my head
I'm worried once we get to the trails we won't e able to make it far
with unstudded tires. We arrive and roll gingerly first, then more to
normal. I thought we were going for a short 10 mile ride. Nope. Dad
loves it so much it turns out we're doing 35 -- at HIS insistence. I
wish I woulda known, woulda worn more than commando jeans :)

we stop at a McD's on the way back to warm the toes and a man asks us
if it's too cold to ride, nope, with a cheeky smile he gets from me.
He chats me up about his trek with a spring loaded fork and super fat
cushioned sprung seat and his triangle stand (indoor bicycle
trainer) and compliments us on our Schwinns :) he also tells us
about how he broke his ankle on a ladder two years ago, got a buy-out
retirement package from GM, how his wife left him and his kids took
off and don't see him anymore. I feel badly. He asks dad if he's
divorced. My dad says laughing, not yet! I love my dad :)

We roll out and 4 miles later stops and asks me to check his rear
brake because he thinks it's rubbing. I check and show him it's fine.
look at the front of his bike and find I can't even turn the front
wheel.

There is SNOW PACKED BETWEEN THE TIRE AND FENDER. Dad holds his bike
up, I pop off the front wheel, find a stick and clean out the snow-
jam.

Pop the wheel back on and he's as happy as a little boy, pedaling
furiously and explaining as he shakes shakes his head that he thought
he was finally getting old, losing his power, his strength. We both
are laughing hysterically at what had happened and dad's dramatic
reaction and feel grateful and thankful for our health and
friendship.

By this time we make it to Orchard Lake, where Chief Pontiac (after
whom the automobile was named) is buried on Apple Island, and take a
few moments to enjoy the beautiful scenery. Dad decides to forego the
trail for streets and we're pedaling into a frigid headwind powered by
Orchard Lake and our fingers are in so much pain because of it so
after 6 miles we walk into a Starbucks for a nice cuppacoffee to warm
up and caffeinate our engines.

The rest of the ride home is on salted roads (maybe I should cringe
here but I'm really okay with it). I get flicked off by 3 dudes in a
brand new Benz and throw up a double duce, screaming peace! ... and
then laugh as I approach them at a red light and they don't know how
to react to my non-hostility.

Ended the ride off right with a beautiful sunset.

I gotta say, today was a good day. - Ice Cube

[RBW] Snow Ride with Dad

2012-01-15 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
Fun write-up!

Nothing like experiencing motorist hostility only to breeze up beside the car
at the next light. Most of the time they are too embarrassed or scared to look
in my direction. Several times I've witnessed them drive dangerously through
the red light rather than face the discomfort of being adjacent to the cyclist
they just abused (me). The protective cage of the automobile gives some people
the illusion of anonymity and invincibility - when that illusion is suddenly
shattered, hilarity ensues.

I'll keep that in mind. The bike is my wife's Atlantis has the

I'll just install them see how that works. I read the Travel Agent

Getting them set up correctly may be an exercise in patience, getting

[RBW] Re: Sayonara Jay Day

2012-01-15 Thread Amit Singh
Jay is one of the best people I've met and worked with. He's
incredibly patient, laughs easy, eats and drinks great stuff and
doesn't cover up truth to make others happy. He also bends over
backwards to make others happy. He's become a great friend, someone I
can talk El Rego Et Ses Commandos with.

I remember talking with Jay when I first called saying something like
I can't believe people spend the kinda loot they do on bikes and bike
related stuff. It blew my mind, I thought I was above it, talking to a
man that was in it. Looking back, what a stupid and jerk thing to say,
Jay was gracious through it all.

Jay rode with me to make sure I made it home safe after a night at the
bar while I was visiting California last month. Normally I walked, but
he rode up the toughest hill in Berkely, maybe the toughest hill I
rode the whole time I was there, and insisted on riding up, not
walking up, and taught me how to snake side to side to make sure I
didn't put a foot on the ground. We were both sweating bullets of
liquor by the time we reached the top. He was laughing the whole time,
I was hyperventilating. And then he rode off into the night like a
cowboy. He makes art when he rides. It's a beautiful thing to see.

I like him a lot. Riv's losing one of the best, ever.

Good luck homie, wherever you go, whatever you do I hope you 'git it!'
with passion, love and happiness.

I'm annoyed that this sounds like such a dramatic goodbye message.
I'll text you as I'm throwing back a drink to celebrate your upcoming
journey.

 Internal hubs are heavy.

Well, yes- but you have to compare that to the weight of everything it replaces
in a derailleur system: hub, cassette, front and rear derailleur, a dozen
links of chain, shifters, cables, housing, one chain ring. It comes close to
being a wash. If you use a coaster brake, you can remove the rear brake
calipers, too. Prolly someone has posted the numbers somewhere on the
interwebs.
