My Dear Mr. Reid,

You may find the exact same hat at this link:
https://www.rei.com/product/879776/rei-co-op-sahara-hat-womens. There are
offerings as well in both men's and children's. Do post your photo if you
buckle under the pressure and find yourself in possession of such a hat. You'll
note that there is, in fact, a drawstring which negates the need for the John's
Irish Strap. Though, how can JIS ever be unnecessary?

Re: [RBW] The One in Which LeahFoy Races the Carbon Riders Up Killer Hill

2017-05-24 Thread dstein
Great story! I have a version of killer hill that starts close to my house
and climbs for 4.5 miles. Used to take me 40 minutes. I'd get passed by the
lycra crabon crowd all the time. So i kept pushing and got my ass in shape.
I can now get up the hill in about 32 minutes, on par or better than my
friends, and my bikes keep getting heavier (gunnar sport to hunqapillar to
jones plus).

The other week I was out on my Jones plus with 2.4" tires (up on roads,
down on trails), I passed most everyone I came upon, it felt pretty good,
especially considering it's a pretty popular cycling route...one guy
insisted I had a motor on my bike as I passed him and was looking for it,
maybe I should have just let him think I had
one: https://www.strava.com/activities/953448588
Maybe I should have been wearing a nice white brimmed hat for effect;)

That sounds similar to the circumstances under which I have had shimmy with
Riv/Grant designed bikes - saddle bag plus handlebar bag. Just one or the
other, no shimmy. Both - shimmy. I was able to pretty reliably replicate
it. The amount of weight in each bag could vary a fair amount, but there
had to be weight in both places.

[RBW] Re: Save Bruce Gordon Cycles

2017-05-24 Thread John
Hi Evan,

In the past, you have been very helpful with answers to my questions
here on the RBW Owners Bunch, and I thank you again.

However, and I say this respectfully, if your pitch doesn't go over
well, you change and refine your sales pitch. You do not lose your temper
or insult your prospective investors or donors.

I wish you success, but minus a clear business plan, your pitch raises
questions and suspicions. It also doesn't help for your partner to insult
the members of RBW & iBOB, accusing them of racism. I, myself, am of
Mexican / American descent. My partner is also of Mexican / American
descent. Our ancestors were here before the war, the Mexican-American War.
Our families say, "We didn't move, the border did." And we ride bikes! No
one on the RBW or the iBOB list insulted POC.

In summary: Pitch for Donations + Questions from Prospective Donors +
Angry Retorts & Accusations of Racism = RED FLAG!!!

Please go back to the drawing board and refine your pitch and your business
plan.

Wishing you success with your new school and museum,

John

me on the path. There he was again! And he wanted a word with me.

"How many gears does that bike have?" he asked, pulling even with me.
 "I don't know. It's friction shifting."
"What a cool bike! It's an old one!" he exclaimed, riding abreast of
 me.
"Actually, I got it in 2012. It's a Rivendell - they take all the best
things from the past and all the best things from the present, put them
together and create this awesome bike. It's lugged steel and perfect and I
will be riding it still in 40 years."

He talked bout the touring he does and how he misses biking in CA (me,
too) and how he has big plans for an upcoming trip with 38,000 feet of
climbing. Then we stopped so he could wait for his buddy and really look
over TBBITW. He loved the grips ("Are they wooden?!"), he loved the bars
("Wow, I really like the shape of those!"), he admired the racks ("I love
how you have these racks and panniers!"). He asked me all about Rivendell,
and I did my best to tell him. He had never heard of it, so I tried to jog
his memory (Do you read the Bike Snob? Heard of Bridgestone? No?). I fear
we're in different biking worlds, I said. I finally hit pay-dirt when I
asked if he's ever heard the term "retrogrouch." Yeah, in fact he had.
"Well that was coined to describe Grant Petersen." I hope I told him
 right;
that was my understanding, at least. He continued to notice little details
on my bike and I continued to purr like a cat on the inside, because how
often does ANYONE appreciate my retro-beach-cruiser-no gears-bike?
 Finally,
someone who was beginning to see it for what it is. A legit bike that is
beautiful and functional and can beat you up Killer Hill.

[RBW] FS: Nitto Rack Mark's Platrack

2017-05-24 Thread Jason Ferrier
$120 plus shipping.

Mint condition outside of the slight marks where the mounting hardware
scuffs the finish on the bolt tabs.
Photo gallery here

*From Rivendell's site back when these were available:*

*Mark worked on this for most of a year, working closely with Nitto's Mr.
Yoshikawa until all the bugs were gone and there was nothing to add or take
away.*

*It is not a stand-alone rack. It works only for sure with either Mark's
Rack or the Nitto Mini-Front. It won't work with the Nitto M-12. The front
part of that rack (which on first glance looks nearly identical to our
Mini-Front)--the front part is round, with no way to attach this baby.*

*The idea from the get-go was to use the small Mini-front and Mark's rack
as a platform for a broad extension that would triple the surface area, and
thus allow you to carry bigger and ganglier loads; and that is does.*

*It also had to mount and unmount easily, so you could put it on in a
couple of easy minutes, and remove it even faster. It does that, too.*

*And it had to be a backwards-compatible add-on rather than a stand-alone
rack, so you don't have to undo your Mark's or Mini to put this one on. The
SlickerSack is perfect for this--since it was designed for it. It's great
for commuting, shopping, camping. It goes on and off quickly, looks super
neat, and works as a suitcase or carry-on, too. It's perfect for touring
and bike camping--it holds a lot and has accessory patches for tieing a
tent or pad or sleeping bag on top.*

*How To Use It Nitto PlatRack*

*You lay the load onto it and strap it down. For tours and S24O bike
camping trips, it'll fit a tent, sleeping bag, and pad. The rest of your
gear can fit in back. Around town, zip-tie a basket onto it, and it's ready
for groceries. It's just one more way to carry a commute load, either in a
basket or a nifty new Platrack bag made just for it called the SlickerSack.*

*It weighs 17.5 ounces. So, when you add the weight of the necessary Mark's
rack or Nitto Mini front, it's still under 2lb. And it's tubular CrMo. If
you're a rack person, this is a good one.*

*The following contains anecdotes about pretty bikes and cute clothes and girly
hashtags. Not suitable for all audiences. Those without sense of humor ought
not proceed.*

I was feeling pretty good on this breezy and sunny morning as I biked up Killer
Hill on TBBITW. The boys were safely deposited at school, their bikes in the
racks and backpacks on their backs. I was unladen and free and feeling the
contentment one can only feel after one has been shopping the day before and
bought cute new clothes. I had on a simple tee (new), shorts (also new) and my
(new) favorite thing (heaven help me, my husband really should make me get a
job!), a white, wide-brimmed hat in a style I have coined "outdoor chic." On my
lovely bike, sailing along I felt like #thatsdarling and not even Killer Hill
could dampen the mood! Towards the worst of the hill I happened to catch
something in my peripheral vision. Two riders, donning full lycra on fat-tubed
carbon bikes with helmets and helmet mirrors and clippy shoes, were on the
other side of the road amidst traffic trying to conquer the hill. I found the
whole thing hilarious, as I imagined I looked like some sort of caricature of a
"real" rider to them. I don't know what came over me. The Bike Snob has made
fun of people who do exactly this, but I lost all control of myself and I did
it: I shifted into the granny gear and let my legs fly as I raced those guys up
Killer Hill.

The older guy beat me, fair and square, but barely. The other guy pushed his
bike up the hill. He circled the roundabout, passed by and said something about
"good job on that hill." I told him I do it twice a day, laughed a bit and

Experienced shimmy for the first time ever going 17ish mph downhill with my
hands off the bars (64cm Orange Quickbeam). Had a small amount of stuff in
a saddle bag and a down sleeping bag strapped to my bars.

The fix was to put my hands on the bars and keep going. Cheap and

If you call Riv, please post the answer here. Riv lists the torque spec for

[RBW] Re: The One in Which LeahFoy Races the Carbon Riders Up Killer Hill

2017-05-24 Thread Ian A
What a great story! It reminds me of a time when I was touring and was
accordingly in good shape and was riding along quite happily one day when a
person, similarly attired to your carbon racers, but on a fast modern
mountain bike, hopped close on my back wheel without asking. I was a little
annoyed (I don't mind someone jumping on my wheel if they ask first), so
pulled away and heard him breathing hard, I gave that pace a little time
then sped up further. A couple of miles down the road, I stopped (quite
winded) and relaxed at a pull out, looking like I was enjoying the scenery.
He came by looking very annoyed and didn't return my greeting. So I caught
him and passed him! I was on a long tour and was riding a lot of hours a
week, so I had an unfair advantage.

1. Ride to the grocery store
2. Buy one can of your favorite canned seafood product. Smoked salmon is
a good choice
3. Eat contents of can, and wash it out.
4. Affix these two Irish-strap-hat-configuration photos into the fish can

No, $25,000 per year is not much. But I guess at some point adults do need
to make decisions on how best to use their talents, interests, and
education in pursuing a career. Some job choices just do not generate
much income but presumably do afford the person other positive reasons for
conducting their lives in a given fashion.

Hi Steve Chan,

I cannot comment about Bruce Gorden personally since I never spoken to him but
the comments of his attitude or behavior seems consistent to what I have read
over the internet over the years.

I use to think that as I got older, I became less tolerant of people when they
did things that I disapprove of or did things which I thought were unnecessary
and cruel. I understand your frustration but I am actually going the opposite
way to where I started of being more tolerant. For a person who has left jobs
because I felt excessively exploited and mistreated, my opinion, although you
did not ask, is that you cant take it personally when have bad behaviors. It
is allowing people pull your strings and you are giving them license to do so.
People with bad attitudes hurt themselves in the end and it is no reflection on
you as a person.

That was a hard lesson I had to learn because it had to be done repeatedly
until I got it. Its not you so do not take it personally and do not allow
anyone to take away your peace.

There was an article about BG a few years back in Adventure Cycling(I
think? A pdf was posted somewhere -- not here -- in the middle of a "beat
up on Bruce Gordon" fest) where he estimated that his average yearly income
over the 40 years or so he'd been framebuilding was about $25k/year.
Thats, uh, not the sort of income that gives you a bountiful retirement
egg.

In the worst case he'll have social security (so we'll all be funding his
retirement, thank goodness) and a tiny revenue stream from selling RnR
tires, but that's edging close to catfood territory.

Re: [RBW] Re: Save Bruce Gordon Cycles

2017-05-24 Thread Chris Birkenmaier
Been offline for a little lately with a graduation to attend, and other
life events. I'm glad to see some reasoned remarks posted on this plan to
either fund BG's retirement or he will scap all his bikes. That struck me
as almost a gag post but I see that it is not. Perhaps he should have
started an IRA years ago like many folks must do? What a waste of
resources to just destroy a bunch of bikes but hey, they are his to do so,
I guess. Pretty confident I will not be funding his retirement though.

FWIW, BG sounds like any number of people I've worked with over the years -
to be honest, as I've grown older myself, I feel that I've become less
patient with these sorts of folks. But at a basic humanitarian level, I can
see how BG deserves could use some help.

Hi Steve Chan,

I cannot comment about Bruce Gorden personally since I never spoken to him
but the comments of his attitude or behavior seems consistent to what I
have read over the internet over the years.

I use to think that as I got older, I became less tolerant of people when
they did things that I disapprove of or did things which I thought were
unnecessary and cruel. I understand your frustration but I am actually
going the opposite way to where I started of being more tolerant. For a
person who has left jobs because I felt excessively exploited and
mistreated, my opinion, although you did not ask, is that you cant take it
personally when have bad behaviors. It is allowing people pull your
strings and you are giving them license to do so. People with bad
attitudes hurt themselves in the end and it is no reflection on you as a
person.

That was a hard lesson I had to learn because it had to be done repeatedly
until I got it. Its not you so do not take it personally and do not allow
anyone to take away your peace.

[RBW] Re: Hubbuh Racks

2017-05-24 Thread Ryan Thompson
Daniel,

I have my HHH and started the assembly process last weekend but wasn't able
to finish; it is a big job ;-). I do plan on installing Mark's rack on the
front and a Blackburn EX-1 rack on the rear for our daughters Topeak bike
seat. The only thing I noticed was I needed to pick up some M6 bolts for
the rear eyelets, but the rack seems like it will fit with some persuasion.
I have a spare Nitto big back rack but haven't tried to mock it up.

Gordon's attitude is a big turnoff for me. If he wants to scrap his bikes
and cut off his nose to spite his face, I say let him do it. And ask him
to post some photos for us to see it happen.

[RBW] Rivendell Silver Crankarm torque value?

2017-05-24 Thread Ryan Thompson
The only reason I ask is I've recently had to replace a NDS crankarm from a
Sugino XD2 on my Cheviot due to it constantly loosening and me constantly
tightening it. On the new crankarm, I lightly greased the spindle and
tighten the crankarm to 35 n/m, which seemed really snug.

On to the Silver cranks on my HHH, I really want to get the installation
right so I don't end up screwing up another crankarm.

Does anyone have the mfg suggested torque value or should I just call Mark
at Riv?

Thanks,
Ryan

[RBW] 60cm Cheviot Owner Questions: Which Hitch-mounted Bike Racks Work & Largest Tire Width With Fenders

2017-05-24 Thread Howard Hatten
John
I mounted my front fender using a daruma bolt trying to gain as much clearance
as possible. The outside arm of the tectro brake interfered with the ridge
profile of the fender. I attempted to peen some clearance but to get enough I
messed up the profile of the fender. After buying a replacement I went to a
Paul racer brake on the front and that gave me the clearance I needed.
In the closed position I could have made the tectro work it was the released
position that gave me problems. Trying to gain clearance in the open position
led to the fender screw up. I had no problems with the tectro on the rear.
I'm comfortable with the tire clearance I have but I ride roads all the time.
If I were doing a lot of trail I would set up differently.

Disclosure: < 12 fender installs.
