[RBW] Re: MIT Homer pre-order

2018-08-07 Thread Drew Henson
I (pre)ordered one the other day. I’ve been wanting an an AHH for a while now
but the MUSA frames were just out of my budget, so I jumped at the MIT version.
Admittedly I’d prefer the more horizontal top tube and shorter wheel base, but
what can you do. My only bike now is an elephant Nfe which is low trail and
pretty “lively” and a lot of fun to ride, but I think the AHH will make an
awesome partner for days I want something more stable and comfortable. That’s
the plan anyway.

Side note: I’ve seen a guy lately cruising around West Seattle and downtown
Seattle on an Atlantis with double tt. Looks awesome.

Re: [RBW] Re: TdF pros are using oversize rear derailer pulleys. Should you? Or, trickle... up? Cycle technology

2018-08-07 Thread Benz, Sunnyvale, CA
Reed, that’s my recollection too. However, Shimano did the large pulley thing
to increase chain wrap and not to reduce friction. To be honest, this friction
reason may be measurable, but inconsequential (much like extreme
weight-weenieism). 1-odd Watts of savings? Pfft! My farts have more thrust that
that!

[RBW] Re: Do you have a ROHLOFF hub on your bike ?

2018-08-07 Thread Jon BALER
I have a Rohloff on my touring bike (Salsa Marrakesh). I have had the Rohloff
since late 2014, and very happy with it for touring. I have done multi week
tours with it every year, and occasionally use it for commuting too.

Being able to shift while stopped is a big advantage on a heavily loaded bike.
I can also shift quickly to lower gears quickly while riding when needed. I'm
a big guy (220+ lbs) and carry heavy loads, and the hub has been trouble free.

[RBW] Re: 60cm Cheviot first impressions & pics

2018-08-07 Thread Gabriel Bruguier
Thanks for the kind words everyone!

Virgil, my main concern was to have the brake cable secured in the cable
stop somehow and to not just rub against the edge of the stop. The link
above to Joe's build shows that he used a part from a brake noodle to put
in the stop. But I also wanted to center the cable on the top of the
downtime (the stop is off center) before I connected it to the cable
hanger. So, I ordered one of these clamp on cable stops
,
centered it an inch and a half down from the stop, and ran a bit of cable
between them. Brake operation feels smooth and strong. It adds an extra
piece, which irritates my minimalist sensibilities, but oh well.

Jon, measuring at the outer knobs, the tire is between 50-51mm wide. Yes,
every ride I'm appreciating the bike's qualities more and more. I can't
wait to spend all day on it!

Jason, this video

shows that Paul ran a 45mm fender & 32mm tire in the Racer Mediums. The
Racers are larger-- I read somewhere that there's 54mm between the pivots.
 So maybe 50mm with 45s?

today, but I'm sitting it out; turns out to be the second day of an ozone

Drank a liter and a half of water, evaporative cooling worked like a charm:
sweat is our friend, at least while the bike is moving. I grew up in South

I like the Cypres the best, but enjoy the ride on the JBs and didn't notice
too much of a difference.
All of my Cypres tires stretched considerably over time - luckily I had
enough room to accolade the embiggening.
I had a set of Stampede pass that were noticeably undersized which may have
been intended to account for stretch over time.

Re: [RBW] Jack Brown green/Cypres/Compass 32/ impressions?

2018-08-07 Thread 'Tim' via RBW Owners Bunch
I've ridden all 3 tires on my Hilsen. I went from JBs to Cypres first and there
was no noticeable difference. I mean no difference, plus I got more flats than
the JBs. So I went back to JBs. Then Compass started their own line. I was
hesitant but thought I'd give them a go. I installed 32mm Stampede Pass and the
difference was amazing! I fell in love with Compass tires and I regret it all
of the time. Why? Because they are a total pain in the... They wear super fast
(I'm a heavy rider and only get around 1500 miles on a rear tire) and they cost
a small fortune. I've tried to move away from them and I may yet but so far
nothing compares to the pillow soft ride so when Trigger needs new shoes, he
still gets Compass...

Re: [RBW] Jack Brown green/Cypres/Compass 32/ impressions?

2018-08-07 Thread Patrick Moore
I've ridden only the Compass Elk Pass model, labeled 32 but more like 29.
Compared to the JB Greens on my Sam Hillborne, the EPs feel faster; they
are certainly thinner and more supple.

The JBGs were so to speak a mean between the non-TG 32 mm Paselas and the
Compasses. Good tires, but not as good as the EPs.

Not an answer to any of your questions: I have also used 130mm on a 126mm.
The 2mm on either side makes almost no difference, like Paul and Sheldon
said. It's a bit tight, but single-handedly manageable. Opens up more
options. The beauty of steel.

[RBW] Long shot: Does anyone have a used pair of SimWorks fenders to sell?

2018-08-07 Thread Patrick Moore
https://sim.works/collections/fenders-simworks-by-honjo/products/flat-65-black?variant=5250539257885

I'm looking for a set to modify as shorty fenders for my Matthews, per the
earlier thread, but can't justify $151 + shipping (or, if I can justify it
eventually, our brief monsoon will have passed and it will all be too
late). Also, not sure that these will be a huge improvement over the
too-tightly-arched PB Cascadias, but willing to pay used price to try it
out.

The modifications mean cutting the rear to run from cs bridge to about 14"
aft of seatstay bridge; and cutting the front to ~10" forward of the crown
and ~14" aft of it, with stays running from either forward end or aft end
to top lowrider mounts; this shortening to avoid TCO.

Again, long shot, I know, but just in case

 thanks.

[RBW] Re: Wheelset for '84 Trek 720

2018-08-07 Thread Paul Clifton
I have this wheelset on my 1984 Trek 720, and I'm really happy with it: H
Plus Son TB14 rims and Shimano 105 hubs.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/H-plus-Son-TB14-Silver-Rims-Road-Bike-Wheelset-Shimano-105-5800-Hubs-8-11s-/331752995382?hash=item4d3e04fa36

I haven't loaded it up much, but I have ridden the wheels for several years
now and haven't had any trouble from them.

I do have to spread the rear dropouts to get the hub in, but I did not
respace the chainstays. Sheldon says 2 mm on each side won't matter. It
does take a little bit of strength to get the wheel in. Once it's in, it's
fine.

Everything works with a cassette just fine. Even with the 80s Shimano
derailers (can't remember the model). I don't remember if I'm running 8, or
9 speed. Probably 8 because I scavenged the cassette from an old Sora group.

The bike has the Shimano cantis (probably M732 like your friends). Aligning
the pads is no problem.

Converting to 700c made it possible to fit a 38mm tire (with quite tight
clearance). A supple 35 would be better probably.

I'm a huge fan of the Ahearnes. They are the only bars that knocked
Albatrosses off some of my bikes and replaced Jitensha bars (my other

bell and still have a few comfortable hand positions. I've had both the

[RBW] Do you have a ROHLOFF hub on your bike ?

2018-08-07 Thread CharlieG
I’ve got one on my Hunqapillar. Love it. Built the wheel and installed it
myself, which was easy except for putting the cables around the little bobbin
in the external shifting mechanism. Have one of the torque arms mounted along
the chainstay, which is good now that it’s double bolted in place - on my first
install the torque arm twisted while in a low gear. Admittedly I weigh >120kg,
which is like 1000lb...

I tow my 15 month old twins to daycare with the Hunqapillar three days a week.

Note the warning at the bottom that does state heavier riders and/or those
touring with heavy loads may want to consider custom/purpose built wheels.
Not sure how mini your mini tour is but these have otherwise served me well
as a budget "general purpose" wheelset to keep some old frames in service.
I'm 6'5" and 215lbs but haven't loaded these up with big touring loads.

[RBW] Re: Wheelset for '84 Trek 720

2018-08-07 Thread Bob Lovejoy
I would verify that the existing wheels are 700c. The early 80's Trek
720's were, I believe, spec'ed with 27" wheels. If it uses caliper brakes
(which I have seen on some 728's), then it could be no problem. If his 720
has cantilevers, a conversion from 27" to 700c is possible but can make
brake choice an issue.

Might be worth verifying what is on there now. I do have some very nice,
well built 36h, 126mm 700c wheels if you want more specifics.

Thanks,

Bob

[RBW] FS: D2R2 Entries

2018-08-07 Thread Tim Bantham
Hello Riv Riders, I have two registrations available for the annual D2R2
ride in Western Massachusetts taking place on Saturday 8/18. I purchased
them both for $80 back in January. I am willing to let them go for $70 for
one entry or $130 for both if you would like to take a friend. You can use
the entry on any one of the route options. Transferring is easy. You pay me
directly (I prefer PayPal) and I Email the event director with all of the
necessary contact info along with the route that you'd like to ride. DM me
if interested. I will also cross post on iBob.

See below for course and ride info:

[RBW] Wheelset for '84 Trek 720

2018-08-07 Thread Coal Bee Rye Anne
I forget the cost but a few years ago I bought a 100/126 700c stock wheelset
from Harris Cyclery with Sun CR-18 rims and Formula sealed bearing hubs for a
similar kind of project (just not a tour) but it was at least less than the
$400 VO wheelset. I paid a small up charge to have them trued/tensioned before
shipping since they were stock wheels and no issues thus far. I’ve fit a 7
speed freewheel in 2 different 126 spaced frames with them.

[RBW] Wheelset for '84 Trek 720

2018-08-07 Thread jandrews
Hi

This question is for the *alta cockers*

Asking for a good friend who has an early '80's Trek 720 touring bike.

We have a mini tour planned later in the month. Riv content is, I'll be on
my S.H. or Protovelo.

He needs a new wheelset. The specs are 126mm rear triangle. 700c.
He's definitely on a budget and looking to keep the costs relatively
low...but would like to have a strong wheelset capable of putting on the
miles.

I don't know enough about old hubs to advise him.
Seems like his options are:

   1. Buy a used wheelset off of eBay or a list that we could just plug and
   play
   2. Buy some NOS or lightly used front and rear hubs off of eBay or a
list and have a new set of wheels built that may be a little more robust
and modern than something we find used
   3. Buy a new Velo Orange PBP 100/126 wheelset at around $400
   4. Get the rear triangle re-spaced to 130mm and all of a sudden, a lot
more hubs/wheels are open to us at potentially a better cost.

Also, we have a couple of questions related to the above...

   1. Is there a practical difference in usage between a 126mm freewheel
hub and a 126mm cassette hubs beyond just the type of cluster used? in
other words, is there any reason to think that a frame designed for a 6
speed freewheel would have any issue with a 6 speed cassette?
   2. Similarly, am I correct in thinking that a 7 speed freewheel/cassette
would also fit on a hub originally designed for a 6 speed
   freewheel/cassette?

Thank you

Re: [RBW] Re: Rivs with the Jones Loop/Bend H-Bar (Map/Ahearne too)

2018-08-07 Thread Eric Daume
I really enjoyed a lot about my Jones Plus. It was an amazing technical
climber. It was one of the best descending bikes I’ve owned, rigid or
suspended. Super comfortable. But, I found the inertia of the big 29+ wheel
just too much for my relatively tight trails. I would steer for a sharp
turn, and there was a definite lag as the wheel reacted. I’ve been riding
B+ mtbs lately, and I find that wheel size a better balance of grip,
comfort, and maneuverability. I’m think a Jones SWB might be the bike for
me.

A few other nitpicks about the Jones: the bottom bracket was borderline too
low, even with the EBB in the up position. And the front through axle was a
PITA to use. The little end caps would pop off when inserting a wheel. I
think he uses a different through axle design now.
