Re: [RBW] Re: Weird handlebar idea

2020-08-12 Thread tuolumne bikes
You can't do this (attached) with Crazy Bars unless you have hinged brake
levers. The relaxed hand position is palms at about 45 degrees with thumbs
around the bar ends and heel of the hand on the handle bar. On sketchy
descents you have a standard straight bar with two finger braking. Shifting
and braking are accessible in either position. I'm not currently using
this, but it worked for several years. Using Northroad variations now since
my wrists like the 45 degree angle.

I realize this photo may disturb some folks, but the thread is called weird
handlebar idea.

[RBW] Re: Machined vs non-machined brake track

2020-08-12 Thread Nick Payne
I prefer non-machined - the rims will last longer before needing replacing
as the machining a) decreases the thickness of the rim wall at the brake
track, and b) leads to variations in the thickness of the brake track
around the circumference of the rim. Velocity offer quite a few of their
rims in either machined or non-machined versions - I always choose the
non-machined ones if they are available.

Jobst Brandt's take on machined rims was this: "*What you hear and read is
mostly marketing hyperbole, but machining rims has its reason, and it isn't
for your benefit. If you inspect a machined rim closely, you'll find a
surface that looks as though made by a thread-cutting tool. The purpose is
not to get a flat braking surface, but rather to produce a series of fine
grooves to prevent brake squeal on new bicycle test rides.*"

Re: [RBW] Re: Weird handlebar idea

2020-08-12 Thread Philip Williamson
Hey, I’m glad it helps. I didn’t do any modifications, but...
You might want to use a half-round file to match the lever body to the bar.
Simply turning the lever 90 degrees digs sharp corners of my example lever body
into the bar. Someone predicted this setup would slip, but regular sideways
levers on m-bars don’t slip.

[RBW] FS: 58cm Rivendell Atlantis $1900.00

2020-08-12 Thread Brent Sole
Hi there, after a few years of barely riding this one, I’ve decided to let my
Atlantis go to someone who will enjoy and love it for years to come. I don’t
know the exact year it was built, as I am the second owner, but it is pre-2008
and was built in the Toyo Factory, probably early based on certain details.
It’s a size 58cm, stand over is 33.5”. It’s set up as my mountain bike, with
2.1 WTB tires, and a 1x10 drivetrain. XTR rapid rise rear deraileur, 11-36t xt
cassette, and a brand new 36t wolftooth chainring in front. Friction shift via
suntour downtube mount. Nitto cockpit and rack, Paul canti brakes. All the good
stuff. Also have some original crust leather bars and a cool purple steel
brazed stem made by Erickson, right here in Seattle that could be included if
you want to get radical (can include some microshift bar end shifters if you
don’t like friction shift). Im willing to Help with shipping for the right
buyer and we can discuss those terms. Please feel free to text me with
questions or specific photo requests as long as you’re serious. Can’t figure
out how to post photos here, but they can be seen on the Seattle Craigslist add
that I put up today, or just shoot me a mail and I’ll send you whatever you
would like to see. Plenty of scratches and paint chips, but no dings, dents,
or rust that I’m aware of. Wouldn’t dream of repainting it. Cheers.

Re: [RBW] A not-so-riv-ish Riv

2020-08-12 Thread Tim Wilson
Thanks. It's not an Albastache bar, though, just a regular Nitto mustache bar
from the old days.

The whole Campy Ergo 11 to Shimano 9 index-matching thing, once I learned about
it, solved a number of problems and created some interesting opportunities:

• Road levers natively matched to cantilever brakes (Campy CX) for proper
leverage and modulation (tricky to do with Shimano stuff back then).
• Cassettes with more than 9 cogs weren't clearing the end of the chainstay
cleanly.
• Ergo brake levers don't pivot in like STI, essential on a mustache bar where
IN becomes DOWN (with STI you'd risk shifting every time you hit the brakes).
• Placement of the Ergo thumb lever is just right on the bottom side of the
mustache bar.
• Reasonably clean cable routing.

[RBW] FS: Paul Racer Medium Braze-On brake calipers

2020-08-12 Thread Chris Corral
Hi all, I bought these for a build that never happened. Probably never will
since it needs to be totally custom and I just have enough bikes frankly.

I have a full set, so 2 calipers. New in box. One was opened just to look
at, but the other is still sealed in plastic. As noted, these are the braze
on model which are NOT compatible with traditional cantilever or ubrake
post mounts. A framebuilder can move or replace the posts to make these
work. See the link below for full details

Make an offer. Thx,

One might argue that this bike represents a forgotten cube of Rivendell
Bullion, tucked away on a dusty shelf, waiting to be added to some
crazy-ass long-chainstayed stew a couple decades down the road.
I've longed for an All Rounder. Missed one for a criminally low price years
back and haven't slept well since.
Beautiful bike, Tim.

2020-08-12 Thread Timothy Hurley
I’ve had a Sam Hillborne for 11 years and have ridden a Cross Check a bunch of
times. I agree they are functionally very similar, but the way they feel is
night and day. There’s nothing bad about the way the Cross Check feels, but the
S.H. is the most comfortable yet quick bike I’ve ever ridden. It’s like a fast
moving easy chair. All this being said, Cross Check is a great bike too.

[RBW] Re: Upgrade to Sam Hillborne from a Surly Corss-Check?

2020-08-12 Thread Andy Beichler
I am curious about the finish of a Sam Hillborne. I lucked into a 1984
Paramount Touring a year or so ago and got my first up close view of what a
high end frame looks like. The finish on it is top notch. The lug lines
are very clean. No stray file marks or tiny drips of brass (silver?). The
connection where the seat and chain stays join the drop out are fantastic.
There is no evidence of a plug on the end of it. I don't necessarily
expect the same level of finish on a Sam Hillborne as I expect on a much
more expensive bike, but I would like to think the finish is better than I
would find on a Soma or Schwinn. What is the finish on a Sam Hillborne
like?

Re: [RBW] Machined vs non-machined brake track

2020-08-12 Thread Patrick Moore
I've used both, and I can't tell the difference in braking effectiveness,
though perhaps machined tracks means slightly smoother braking, since you
don't have those protruding rim joints -- "thump-thump-thump" -- that
appear, say, on some of my Sun rims. But I'd trade smoothness for a bit
more rim wall thickness.

I was riding the 1999 Joe Starck yestiddy, which has a single, front,
single-pivot Dia Comp Royal Grand Comp caliper with the statutory salmon
pads, pads probably as old as the bike. The brake, activated by 74xx-series
Dura Ace levers, is very powerful, modulates very well, and has a nice
("nice") feel. It also maximizes clearance for a front fender, if fenders
were things I'd put on this bike. The Tektro 559 or whatever that I used on
another Riv were palid and consumptive by comparison and crowded the
fenders.

Point (yes! there is a point!) The quality of your brake is far more
important that the machining of your brake track.

It's a really small bike. It's made for Hobbits.

Seriously though, yes, you'll need a 34 INCH PBH to fit on the Sam.

[RBW] Re: A not-so-riv-ish Riv

2020-08-12 Thread 'jinxed' via RBW Owners Bunch
THAT is what a Rivendell *should* look like in my eyes. Perfect perfect.
The higher the bars have gone, and longer the chainstays get, the less I'm
interested in what they're doing.

I too was pretty devoted to the mustache bar, but after some wrist issues
from the past crept up again I had to switch them out. Little did I know,
the Albatross I tried on a whim became a huge favorite. It allowed me the
semi "aero?" position of the M, but with the relief of the grips.

Bravo on the ergo/M combo! And extra points for the Shimergo!

You probably need a 34cm PBH to fit on this frame, if it's of interest.

There was an article in the mid- to late-90s in a mainstream bike magazine

latest Cannondale DH bike. It had the standard Riv parts (Nitto, Brooks,

[RBW] Re: A not-so-riv-ish Riv

2020-08-12 Thread Mark Roland
Sweet-looking machine. To my eye much more elegant than most of today's all
road offerings-something about skinny knobbies and cantilever brakes on a
roadish steel frame that's hard to beat. You're right in that it's not in
line with the Rivs of recent years, and you would never see a rider in
Pineapple Bob's position in any current t literature from Rivendell. But
that against the grain, fun & practical spirit that is Rivendell shines
through. (How you work those levers is beyond me, though! Give me bar ends
any day. Diff'rent strokes.)

Jeffrey,

As a current Sam owner for five years and before that a Cross Check owner,
the Sam wins hands down for the same reasons others have given here. If you
don't feel the bike will be secure locked up at your place of employment,
then by all means keep the CC as a commuter and the Sam for other rides and
short tours.

Yes, the black frame is one of the last Kogswell P/Rs produced. I'll

I've been having trouble figuring out Flickr and had that album from before

Anyway, price is OBO and you might be close enough so we could arrange a

[RBW] Re: Upgrade to Sam Hillborne from a Surly Corss-Check?

2020-08-12 Thread Surlyprof
I agree with many of the responses, especially Jason’s:
- The Hillborne rides smoother
- The Hillborne tracks nicer
- The Hillborne feels more intuitively responsive

I had a Cross Check with mustache bars for a couple of years as my “discount
Riv wannabe” and was never thrilled with the ride. It always felt a little
dead to me. I also spent a lot of money trying to make it more Riv-like
including buying a new fork to get the bars up higher. That made it look
ridiculous but was more comfortable. When I finally bought my Hillborne, I
regretted the time and money I wasted on the Surly. I learned a lot about
modifying a bike, but that was an expensive lesson. The Hillborne’s ride was
SO MUCH nicer. It is much more stable and responsive (without being at all
twitchy). It is the most comfortable bike I’ve ever owned. It could handle a
slightly wider tire (45s on the Sam, 42s on the CC) . And, as an added bonus,
no more toe-verlap. I had a lot of problems with that on the Cross Check.

Wish I’d just bought the Hillborne first for many more years of more enjoyable
riding.
