My somewhat vague memory is these were sized like a standard road bike of
the time: 58cm C-to-T ST and somewhere in the range of 57-59cm C-to-C TT. I
would place it somewhere between the 54.5 and 58cm current Homers.
But don't listen to me, hrab your measuring tape and get some numbers and
Does anyone have, or know of a place, I could rent a non-strut bike with

Yep, been there too. Usually an easy-out works if done carefully as
mentioned in the other posts. You have to get that hole centered and
deeper. Usually works. One more idea; drill the whole thing out bigger
and put in a helicoil to replace the threads. One more idea; take off the

Ha! Thanks much, Joe. Since I fit the MIT Atlantis in the 62cm variant,
this isn’t quite my size. Thankfully this means no explaining required to
my wife as to why I have yet another bike…

Kevin – how do you think this sizing stacks up to contemporary Riv sizing?
This bike’s stunning, I’m in SF, and I want to somehow spend money I don’t
have

+1 on the single bolt seatposts. Those are the worst. I've always ended up
with a Thomson because way back in the 1990s they were the only 2-bolt
seatposts. Are there any alternatives nowadays? The Thomsons are pretty
spendy for something that seems like you could easily copy it.

The Park Tool SuperGrip compound is supposed to be for carbon or alloy use.
I've heard it really doesn't matter though; apparently stuff that's
advertised for carbon fiber can also be used on steel and aluminum... I've
just never had to actually use it before. I would be surprised if the Nitto

That doesn't work. You should just sell it to me, cheap. :D
I do think I have heard of people doing this, but I don't remember where I
read that. I've not tried myself, because I think I would still be limited
to fairly narrow 650B wheels on my old road.
Out of curiosity, did you get
Brian, this is interesting to me because I could not get my S83 to go in the seat tube of my Gus. I too have always used Phil grease. The Kalloy post (also 26.8) slid right in. I am certain I could have gotten the S83 in there but did not want to scratch it Al up doing so. So far the Kalloy has
I have one, a '95, that I bought recently and put a few miles on before
taking it apart and sending it off for a repaint at Waterford. It had 650 x

far, but it was a fun ride, no problems that I could see. I think the
I've never needed anti-slip compound on any of my steel, aluminum or ti
frames. Are you sure it's not the seatpost that's off in sizing? I
discovered, for instance, that the kalloy that came with my Roadini was
just no good. Replaced it with a Thomson and the problem just magically
went away. I

FWIW, I have been advised in the past that, for standard (alloy, steel) frames
and seat posts, you should never have to resort to anti-slip grease.
A slipping post is a sign that something is mechanically wrong. In one case,
the seat collar on one of my bikes had a small protrusion that was
Has anybody on the list 650'ed one of the old Rivendell Road frames, the
ones that take short brakes and that max out at 28c tires? What was the
outcome?

My ’97 Riv Road came to me with 650B wheels. I ran 38mm tires on it, which were
the widest that would fit between the chainstays.
It was fun, but about a year ago I switched it back to 700c wheels, which
required different brakes (the long reach brakes needed to work with the 650B
wheels

I too am curious as to how to use the SuperGrip compound on a seatpost.
Normally, I would lightly grease the entire post (from the clamp area on
down) with some Phil grease. With these gripping compounds, do you still
use regular grease on the post but apply the grip compound to the area
where
I put 650B on a 54.5 frame so I could stand over it more comfortably (my
normal size frame for a 700 wheel road bike is 50 cm). I put 12,500 + miles
on it and loved it. 38 is the max size. I thought the handling in
particular was great. YMMV. Conti makes a good 28 mm 650B tire, others

FWIW,
Mine is a Joe Starck ‘99 (maybe the earlier Waterfords are different), but
it fits a true 32mm with Campy dual pivots…
