[RBW] Re: New Simple One frame

In a post to this forum a few weeks ago, Grant Peterson said that he
got this bike to inspect the paint and discovered that the rear brake

was the brake surface on the rims, they had very light marks.

Condition is a solid 9/10 on the frame and fork. No scratches, dents
or anything else to be worried about.

The Specialized/Nitto Dirt Drop Stem is the only part on the bike that
has scuffs and a scratch. If it bothers you get a new stem.

Also the fenders are a little less than perfect with a few dents and 2

[RBW] Re: New Simple One frame

2011-04-21 Thread mike

The latest word is that this first batch, at least will have Canti/V
brake mounts and NOT have the cream head tube. Sounded mostly like
some communication issues between Taiwan and Walnut Creek. It would
not surprise me if any subsequent batches go back to sidepull. I
asked about that during a visit in early March. I was told sidepulls
are simpler to set up so were chosen keeping with the simple theme.

I have a frame on order and was slightly bummed as I had already
bought a pair of sidepulls to use. Those brakes have already found a
home on a winter project, so I'm fine with the switch. I had a slight
preference to canti in the first place.

Looking forward to getting the frame. I'm mostly building from the
parts bin, but there are one or two more things to aquire. I'll
probably wait to have the frame in hand before I buy those parts.

I think you are answering your own question here.  Honestly, there's no
reason to use a CO2 setup unless you are trying to literally shave seconds
on refilling.  It's a one-shot deal, and I've seen enough MTB XC racers
walking their uselessly flat-tired rigs home from the halfway point, cursing
their improperly seated fast-fill devices.  You have no margin for error.

Once you have or see that happen, you always carry a pump for backup, decide
to stop using them altogether, or have to rely upon the kindness of
strangers to fill up your tube.  In any event you end up back with a pump.

If you like keeping things compact, I've been using a Crank Brothers larger

easily into a Keven's Bag or L'il Loafer front bag.

Re: [RBW] tubes for 700x50

2011-04-21 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Do you means size or brand? I have Conti, Cycle Pro and other 29er
tubes that will work in anything from a 45 to (in my case) a 65 (the
Contis are labeled 28). I've had problems with Cycle Pro (I think
that's the brand; cheaper ones) in smaller sizes but not so far with
the fat ones -- possibly they are simply never stressed as much.

FWIW, I've used 1 tubes in 2 tires, at least for a week or so at a
time, with no problems; weird tho' to pump and pump and feel this
little hard thing floating around in the flaccid casing, until you
pump some more and the tube finally swells out to casing size.

Re: [RBW] tubes for 700x50

2011-04-21 Thread Rene Sterental
I use the Schwalbe 19A recommended tubes for the 50 - 60mm tires and they
hold air like forever... I get them at Wallingford Bikes,
http://www.wallbike.com/schwalbe/tubes/tube-no-19a-xl.

They are a bit pricier but they're a bit lighter and they last forever.
Otherwise I believe you can get away with the 17 as they have it sized for
the 45mm tires but they can easily be stretched for the 50mm tires as well.

I haven't had a tube failure or a puncture yet (knock on wood!) with these
tubes and my Marathon Supremes or the Big Apples.

Thanks Mike,

I took this with my iPhone 4 and the ProHDR app. It creates amazing images

Subject: [RBW] Homer in Monterey + photos

My wife, son and I went to Monterey for the weekend. On Friday afternoon
we checked out the Sea Otter Classic and all the booths in the expo. Normal
road and mountain bike racing stuff, but a few cool items like wooden bikes.
No Riv stuff on this kind of shows. My son had a great time collecting
goodies and freebies from the different booths and I confirmed I really have
everything I really need, not that it will change what I still want... :-)

On Saturday morning my son and I rode from Seaside where we were staying,
all the way to almost the entrance to 17 mile drive. We rode on the Coastal
Trail until it ended and then on the road until it turned inland. It was
foggy and windy and sunny and very nice. I rode my Homer and he rode his
steel Giant ($300) that he uses to ride to school. Out and back it was about
16 miles and he was pretty tired when we got back. In the afternoon the
three of us went to the Fisherman's Wharf to walk the trail and later had a
 very nice dinner.

On Sunday my son wasn't feeling like another ride, so I rode north from
Seaside by myself on the Coastal Trail to Marina and back. I like this
stretch a lot better as it is more rugged and less populated. There are some
sidetrips to be taken on the dirt and sand to the beaches and there is a
second section of wide pavement that I used to return that makes a very nice
ride and allows one to take the detours to the beaches and so on.

The Homer's fit has been adjusted with a Berthoud Touring saddle and a
7cm Technomix Deluxe stem and now the fit is as perfect as I can get it. I
also fine tuned the yoke height on the Racer brakes for more MA and they
 felt wonderful as well.

Other insignificant but important to me details are that on Sunday was
the very first time the XXL Musa knickers fit and my first ride with no
padded shorts since I was a kid in high school. To my amazed surprise, I was
more comfortable on Sunday with the Musa knickers and regular underwear than
I was on Saturday on padded baggy shorts. I think I've turned another page
and now my all too large padded shorts stock is going to be donated rather
than replenished with smaller sizes. A happy fellow that made me!

This morning I commuted to work on the Musa knickers as well and again,
was surprised at how comfortable I was and how non-irritated my skin
feels. It was also the first morning commute where I didn't need a vest and
lamb-skin full gloves. The temperature was 55 - 57 and my NZ wool zip T and
a jersey on top were all I needed. Spring is here in the Bay Area, with an
expected 70 or so by the time I leave the office and head back home.

A few photos of my Homer can be seen here:http://tinyurl.com/3kpa2f7

Re: [RBW] tubes for 700x50

I think the tubes I use are regular weight 35-38mm 700c tubes in my 2 700c
(29er) tires. These tubes weigh a bit less than regular 29er tubes, and I
like saving that little bit of weight off of the huge amount of mass that's
already there. Mentally makes me faster.
