[RBW] Medium Nitto Big Rear Rack on my Hunqapillar + 2.35 Big Apples
Taking advantage of the higher placed bottom braze-ons for the rear rack on my 58cm Hunqapillar, I decided to install the medium sized Nitto Big Rear Rack instead of the large one that I have on the Atlantis. The main reason was that I noticed on photos that some of the rear racks appeared to fit closer to the seatpost and therefore, the handle on the top didn't interfere with larger saddlebags. I ordered one, installed it yesterday and couldn't be more satisfied. The medium Sackville Saddlebag still doesn't fit as well as it does on its purposely designed for Nitto R-14, but it is less tilted than on the large rack. Still not to my liking, but bearable aesthetically. Functionally it works well. The medium rack doesn't interfere with the Acorn large saddlebag and works perfectly with the Carradice Longflap Camper. I also installed the 2.35 Schwalbe Big Apple Liteskin tires to test them out and am happy to report that the clearance is 5mm on each side. I only managed to test ride them around the neighborhood and was initially shocked at how incredibly more cushy they are after having ridden the bike with the 40mm Marathon Extremes. The Extremes I had pumped to 50F/80R and the BAs are pumped to 25F/40R. I'll have to test them out on the road and trails when I get back from a business trip to Chicago next weekend, so stay tuned for a report. I'll also have to play around with the tire pressure. The Excel calculator based on the BQs optimal tire pressure for my weight + the bike recommends 20F/33R, so I'm quite close. The initial feeling was a bit more sluggish than with the Extremes, but that may have to do more with their plushness than with any actual speed reduction. I was just riding back and forth on the street in front of my house. When leaning the bike over for tight turns with one leg down, the tire was squirming - making rubber noises. I don't know if squirming is the right term, but it seems that the contact patch is so large that the rubber just makes noises as you turn it since one side is being displaced more than the other. I was planning to use the 50mm BAs on the Hunqapillar unless I wanted to run knobbies (I got a pair of 29x2.25 Schwalbe Nobby Nics) but I may end up just leaving the 60mm BAs instead. Weight does matter, especially when accelerating a tire. The 2.35 Big Apple weighs 830 grams or 1.8 lbs. each of rotating weight. By comparison the very comfortable 26x1.5 Marathon Racer I have on my tandem weigh only 390 grams. That is going to make a huge difference when you ride uphill or try to accelerate a wheel. Re: [RBW] Re: How Much Difference Would Different Wheels/Tires Make
I think a wide (40mm) plush, low rolling resistance and durable tire is the thing that's hugely missing from the 559 tire size! There should be a 26 Hetre!!! Instead of doing 650B conversions on 700C bikes, getting plush-tire conversion for 26 mountain bikes should be all the rage! I bet more people have a MTB from the 90's hanging in their garage than a skinny-tired 700C bike! Rant for the day. re good 26 tires - Do Schwalbe Kojaks come in 559x50? I have 700x35's (which are actually barely 32's) on my Sam and love them. I think wheel and tire weight makes a big difference in feel, if not actual speed, because they are moving so fast compared to the rest of the bike and rider. Jan Heine did a test of this and found optimal, for him at least, tire weights for various wheel sizes. This had more to do with responsivesness and feel, not speed. The optimal 700c range was down around 320-350g per tire, IIRC. -Spare Tire Pete -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. It has many bells and whistles on it: Eco rack on back with light attached, has a light on the front above fender, has a nite ride light on the handle bars, what appears to be an odometer by Echo, a rear view mirror, a pump, a saddle bag by ?Jandd. It is the mint green with fenders. Has a 2 or Z in Rivendale symbol on center pole and ship on front logo. Any idea of the value or where to sell it? Manufacturer had said $2000 to 3700. +1 I don't see the advantage of these super fat tires. I would be in the group that completely disagrees with the tests in BQ that fatter tires roll faster etc. If that were truly the case the mfg's would not hesitate to hype that to no end, and totally re-tire the world, especially the racing community. Comfort is another matter altogether, but you can even get 23c's to be comfy is you experiment w/ pressures. Striking the balance in terms of width, pressure, typical road surfaces, weight of rider and stuff is the key. As always, YMMV. [RBW] Re: Recomended paths to ride around RBWHQ and surrounding areas?
We are working on local riding maps that are super easy to follow and fit into a map case. Two so far---one to the Iron Horse trail, which is a good flattish test ride bike path, and the other to Shell Ridge (trails) and Mt. Diablo (the road entrance). They're in 'velopes in #18 now, and...there will be others, including a close super hilly course (my morning water tower or open space trail ride), and then...maybe a way to get to Berkeley from HQ, and maybe two more trail destinations on the Mtn...places you will never see in a million decades otherwise. Anyway, we'll be more helpful from now on, I hope. Re: [RBW] Help - can't ride for the lack of a bolt
Don't you hate little frustrations that hold up an entire project? IIRC, all more recent Riv seatpost clusters are designed for a standard allen bolt and hex nut instead of the harder to find seatpost binder bolt proper -- and no, don't ask for one of these at your local True Value because they'll just look at you with mouths agape. It's a standard metric size that I can't now remember. But in fact, you can jury rig it by using any bolt that will go thru the hole and taking care of any issues with bolt head and nut not fitting the countersunk places by simply putting big washers at each end -- not pretty but should be perfectly functional and get you out the door. What I often do in such cases is to get a selection of what seem to be approximate sizes at the hw store; one usually fits and I have the remainders left in my nuts 'n' bolts bins for other such emergencies when they arise. Curious: do y'all save left over and miscellaneous nuts, bolts, washers and screws? I have separate drawers for each in a little caddy and save them up as I find them. I have been contemplating running 32 mm Paselas and/or going to a somewhat lighter wheelset. I still wonder how much real world difference these changes would make. What do you think? Joel It seems as though Paselas are more or less Paselas. Good, basic, reasonably tough tires that were absolute standard bearers for many years. Back in the early '90's, it was really the only meaty tire you could find almost anywhere. When the Jack Brown-Green came out, I was running 32 Paselas on the Quickbeam. I swapped over and the Paselas remained on my tire pile for another year or so, until I made myself wear them out so as not to waste them. I'm sure that a lot of the difference may have been psychosematic, but the JB's had a rounder profile that cornered and descended ridiculously well, and though they had lighter and seemingly more supple casing, they held up better for me. As has been observed - Light. Strong. Inexpensive - pick two. A well-made, lighter wheelset is generally noticeable. And, I do find that larger tires at a more moderate pressure do protect the rim over most topography. But, to put a finer point on it, I'm talking about a 32 spoke rear, maybe a 28 front with nothing silly or stupid-light. You might also experiment or check your fore-aft saddle position. Depending upon your pedaling style, you might find a stronger position for climbing. I had felt myself a little pokey on the climbs and realized my saddle had slipped back a quarter inch or so. It's a metric M6 bolt and nut, 20mm. You can probably get this at the local hardware store -- it's a common size. The members of this forum readily buy and sell bikes and components from one another, and I have never read here of a dispute between a buyer and seller. He passed away in 2008 and my daughter is the owner. she is 16 and the bike is too tall for her. I know nothing about these bikes other than I noticed this one's frame is beautiful and thought it must be something special. Her Dad also had a tendency to buy top of the line toys. He also had a neurolgic condition that affected his balance but I believe he bought this bike despite the poor prognosis with the dream he would be able to ride it. It looks to me like it has never been used. all the little rubber pieces are still sticking off the tires as if brand new. I don't have a sales receipt for this bike so do not know when or where it was bought. It was likely before 2007. We live Alexandria, VA. I was referred to the group from an online manufacturer who said that the bike was not bought from them. I did an 18 mile uphill TT on these bikes (using a similar gear ratio) to see if reality matched my perceptions. Indeed I made it up the hill faster on the lighter bike. I would reasonably expect an 11# (or more) weight difference to be noticeable. Imagine riding with a gallon and a half of water added to your bike- you'd notice it. With the OP's question we're talking a change of a few ounces- imagine the difference between riding with a full versus empty water bottle. Few people claim to notice this difference, but it's much greater than the 30 grams of tire weight some claim to be able to feel. Also, the frame geometry differences are going to give the bike a different feel in terms of handling which can make a rider feel faster or slower without actually being faster or slower. My cross bike with 35c Marathons feels pokey on the road compared to when I'm running 28c Gatorskins. On rough gravel roads I feel just the opposite! I probably lose more water weight on a long ride than the Marathons weigh more than the Gatorskins, true. However, they sure feel different when riding. Those are very different tires in construction as well as size, so they are difficult to compare. Only going down to 32s, it doesn't sound like you're going to go weight weenie so who knows if you'll get up the hills faster. But maybe the smaller tire with higher PSI will make you feel faster. Totally counts for something. Can you borrow a wheel set from someone and see what you think? Re: [RBW] Re: Medium Nitto Big Rear Rack on my Hunqapillar + 2.35 Big Apples
2.35s are overkill on all except the roughest or softest surfaces, but there the certainly do make a difference as I know from experience. No one, certainly not BQ, maintains that fatter is better beyond a certain point. I use BAs instead of knobbies because I do have to ride on pavement to get to the dirt, and I hate driving a knobby over several miles of pavement. A 2.35 BA does better in sand than a 2.35 knobby does on pavement. As to the BQ rollout tests, take them for what they are, but do you have a reason beside no one else does it for disagreement? I personally am very interested in BQ's latest assertion that *diameter* does not matter a great deal: if I knew that 559X60s rolled as well in sand as 622X60s (IME they do not) I would give up my search for a lightweight 29er and simply rebuild the very nice old DB Axis Team frameset I have on a shelf into a light, off road (here in the ABQ valley, that means deep sand) single speed. I say go for it. There's a reason why they make them in 6 and even 5cm lengths after all.If you look at bicycles throughout history, 6 or even down to 4cm stems are not uncommon, even among racing machines of former eras. There are even zero offset stems.I call bullshit on so-called short stems adversely affecting handling.First of all, I doubt you'll notice any difference, other than perhaps being more comfortable. [RBW] Re: What's the shortest stem that you would use?
What brake levers do you use? I have come to believe that traditional bend bars like the Noodle were designed for the brake levers that were is use a decade or two ago. Modern brake levers (be they Ergo, STI or Tektro) fit differently. They allow a hand position that's a good couple of cm further forward than older levers. I find I'm happier with a bar with less reach to compensate for that. I really like the current crop of short reach, shallow drop 'compact' bend bars. Unfortunately there aren't many that will fit a 26 mm clamp. Shortening the stem or raising the bar will change the location of the tops. If you're comfortable on the tops and too stretched out on the hoods, the only way to change that relationship is with a different bar. OK - jet lag and bike assembly is not a good combo. It took a 45 minute ride on my old bike and some blueberry pancakes for me to figure out for myself what Patrick suggested - take any bolt that fits, a couple of washers and vioala ... my 1st ride on a Rivendell :) Actually my 1st time riding a decent road bike of any kind. Impressions so far are: 1. This is a very high quality bike - much better than anything else I've riden, and 2. Drop bars are going to take some getting used to. I've got them nice and high, but there are a lot of adjustments, decisions, etc. I ride almost every day and have for years. With this set up I feel I a total newbie. So many new to me things - drop bars, bar end shfters, Rivenell sizing. I've got a 6 day solo tour planned starting the week after next. Hope I've got some of the kinks worked out by then. Re: [RBW] What's the shortest stem that you would use?
You might also consider narrower bars. I use 46 cm Noodles on my Fargo (3 cm above saddle) and 37 or 38 cm Belleris and GB Maes clones on the road bikes (3 cm below saddle): same reach to hood tips and hooks, roughly. TTs are all within 5 mm of each other. I find it even easier to adapt between the vastly different bar widths and heights than I do between the 160 mm Q of the Fargo and the roughly 130 of the Rivendell fixies. It is the reach of the bars. I am using Campy Ergos and am comfortable on the tops of my Noodles. Re: [RBW] Re: How Much Difference Would Different Wheels/Tires Make
Some time ago I found an old CyclePro mountain bike, from the early '80s, at GW for a good price and bought it. It was shod with some 45 mm slicks. I rode it through, literally, a garden of goathead thorns and came back with scores, if not hundreds, of goatheads in the tires but, thanks to the belted tires plus thorn proof tubes, not a minim of air lost. But I have never, ever in my life ridden tires at once so wooden and so molasses-like: if those were the only bicycle tires and tubes available, I kid you not, I would give up cycling. Similar experience with Mr Tuffys in 559X32 Paselas. Give me flats any day. OTOH, the 22 mm (actual, on skinny rims) old stock so-called 26X1 Specialized Turbos I just rode 21 miles on are fast and surprisingly cushy over small amplitude, high frequency bumps -- something I noticed years ago comparing them to Fatboys (tho' the latter were always overinflated). And these skinnies flat less than the mentioned Paselas -- beats me why. Re: [RBW] How Much Difference Would Different Wheels/Tires Make
People are way over thinking this question. Tire rim weight are critical when accelerating or going uphill. If you doubt this I suggest you get a 5 and a 10 pound weight and spend some time simply lifting the weight in an arms length from your body. Rim tire weight has a big impact on how lively, eg, responsive a bike feels. Sure, some tires have lower rolling resistance than others and as your rolling along on a long ride that can make a difference. But liveliness is all about acceleration and climbing and tire / rim weight trumps rolling resistance. I commuted on ever heavier tires, ending up on Avocet 38 mm cross tires because I wanted comfort on bad urban roads and puncture proof performance. I was way more interested in having a safe and hassle free experience. Now that I'm retired I divide my time between between country (dirt roads), errands (mostly lousy paved roads), and joy rides. I am blessed to be able to ride tires suited for each; but I do not expect cyclocross tires to perform like high quality, low weight road tires. keep the rubber side down, michael -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: What's the shortest stem that you would use?
Hi all, I will address two points, and I acknowledge my findings are empirical. My Redline Monocog 29er has a very short stem, perhaps only 5 to 6 cm with, essentially a straight bar. I have no problems steering it through single track, over roots, stones, logs etc. I have noticed the Noodles have a long reach. I have two sets of bars that I swap out on my Carrera Andromeda. One is Bontrager VR that uses a 10 cm stem. The other set is a Noodle that I use a 8 CM stem to get the same reach. I have not experienced differences in handling either way. You could try new compact handlebar as recommended already, or you could switch the stem to a shorter version. Neither of which should effect handling in a way that you could not adapt to. As already discussed a 1 cm raise on the bars would bring them closer to you. It could be a cheaper and fast alternative. Re: [RBW] What's the shortest stem that you would use?
I would try the shorter reach bars if raising the stem doesn't cut it. I personally think 8-9cm is as short as a stem should get. Most (all?) of the Nitto drop bars are fairly long reach compared to truly short reach bars. Bontrager has a black 26.0 modern compact bar. Re: [RBW] How Much Difference Would Different Wheels/Tires Make
I disagree wholeheartedly. Rolling feel differences IME are far more noticeable than wheel or tire weight differences. I agree that weight is relatively minor in its effect except when climbing (then you certainly do notice it); you also notice it when accelerating but (IME) less so -- and I move from very light, 1600 gram wheels to massively heavy ones -- but supple tires are very different from doggy tires. Pat, The Noodles have a 95 mm reach, so I need something shorter than that. The only possible Nitto would be Mark's bars, which are 82. There seem to be some Salsa, Ritchey and Bontrager bars that have a reach of 75 mm, but they're all black. At least they're relatively inexpensive. Wonder if a 13 mm decrease in drop would be enough. I have to respectfully disagree. If the difference between one tire/rim combo and another was 5 lbs/2270 g or 10 lbs/4540 g, the difference would be significant. Differences of 4 oz/100 grams are not very significant. Bikes don't accelerate very quickly even when ridden by pro racers, let alone the rest of us, so it's not that big a deal. When climbing, weight is weight. The steeper the hill the more this is true. Doesn't matter if the weight is on your rims or in your water bottle. Almost no one grouses about the 21 ounces/590 grams the water in a full water bottle weighs slowing them down, yet people claim to be able to feel 10 or 50 or 100 grams on their bike. It always cracks me up on the bike tech and racing newsgroups; it's one of the reasons I no longer read any mainstream bike publications. Even if we apply the notion that the weight on the periphery of the wheels counts as double in terms of energy cost to accelerate as compared to weight on the bike, if we mount a 100 g lighter tire the gain is still less than half of a full water bottle. And oddly enough rim weights are generally higher now, due to aero shapes and thicker walls to avoid the expense of having to put in spoke sockets, than they were years ago unless you're spending a lot of money on boutique, fragile wheels. Rolling resistance, OTOH, can be nearly 100% of what slows you down at very low speeds and 25% or more of the total drag we have to overcome at a cruising speed of 18 mph. It is a constant on the bike, unlike wind resistance or inclines. That's not only a difference on a long ride but at every moment, including when climbing. When climbing, because our speeds are lower, RR becomes a much larger percentage of the drag we have to overcome. It's worth paying attention to, but there too we have to balance various needs (e.g., durability and puncture resistance versus speed). Call it a difference in riding philosophy. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] FS: Rivendell Catalogs
I have 7 catalogs ranging from 03-08. They are all in decent condition. I will let them got for $35 shipped for the lot or I would also consider trading for some Rivendell Readers. I need issue 37 and then anything 30 and below. Also unrelated but I will throw it in, I also have a brand new never opened ipod shuffle that I will sell for $40 shipped or trade for some Readers. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: inherited rivendale bike- Atlantis
Hi Kathy, Unfortunately these bikes don't have much info on them (no size stickers or anything like that), there should be a serial number on the bottom and if you call Rivendell they might be able to match it to the original receipt which would help you catalog the bike for sale, and ballpark a price. As Seth said you can do some rudimetry measuring, and pictures will help folks guess. Also, listing your husbands dimensions (height) will help folks guess too. There are quite a bunch of us who live in the DC area (myself included), if you're comfortable with it, you might consider putting out an open request for someone to come by and take some measurements and help you document the components. They should also be able to ballpark for you what is a reasonable selling price is for the bike. If no-one from Alexandria offers to help, and you'd still like some, drop me a line and i'll come by and help you. Another option is consignment, there is a shop in MD that consigns specialty bikes like this, i can't remember the name but someone will come behind me and name it. We live Alexandria, VA. I was referred to the group from an online manufacturer who said that the bike was not bought from them. Regardless, I usually refer to my bike as my Ram, sometimes as my Riv. Grant, I see what you're getting towards: a lot of companies start w/ one specific item, then grow to where they have several other associated items to their original purpose. But then, after becoming 'the' company to be, start sticking their label on other items, further from their original core... I can understand keeping the clothes, the bags, etc., under separate brands, but personally, I wouldn't worry about bike frames... that's your core product, I would tend to think that it's 'better' for Rivendell to have the Atlantis and the Hilsen and the others all under the Rivendell frame umbrella, in addition to the customs, IMO, FWIWbut, of course, it's *your* company, *you* get to decide how you want it and, seems to be pretty right, IMO... -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. I suggested standover as the easiest b/c the only two atlanti with similar standover are the 56 and 58 and you can tell one from the other b/c of the wheel size, instantly. After that the 58 and 61 look different b/c of the head tube size and the 64 is obviously the biggest. Unless this is a fairly old one in 66 or 68 but even then the standover will be obvious. Also standover height is easiest and least-finicky to measure. -sv -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
