Re: [RBW] Re: Repainted and rebuilt low trail Hunqapillar

2013-04-03 Thread Kelly
My question for you is on the shimmy... are you talking about a shimmy
freehanded or a real shimmy. I only ask as of all our bikes none have
every shimmied and we throw a wide mix of loads at them .. 61cm atlantis,
64 Bombadil especially... On my AHH and Ram depending on how I load them I
am able to get a shimmy free handed at speed that quickly goes away as one
slides a knee to the top tube. Or wind conditions... but I have NEVER had
any type of shimmy withe a hand on the bar or even a high speed thing on
fast descents. Anyway just curious ...

The repaint and such looks great!!! My Bombadil is on the way home from
paint so will be touring next week on the AHH .. good test come to think of
it as I just put the tubus lowriders on the front.

Later

Kelly

On Tuesday, April 2, 2013 4:55:59 PM UTC-5, René wrote:

Well, I love how the low trail forks have improved the way both the
Atlantis and the Hunapillar ride, especially when carrying a load on the
front. I love how the handling/steering of the bikes feels so intuitive to
me, whereas it seemed to me that with the original forks, I had to think
 more to steer them.

That being said, I'll add that if riding the bike unloaded, the
subjectivity of which geometry handles better is totally up to the rider. I
fell in love and was completely won over to the Riv bikes when I first rode
my Hilsen, which still retains its original fork.

Before the repaint, I place a Pass Stow rack on the Hunqapillar with a
Swift bag made specially to fit it. With its high load, I hated how the
front wheel flopped terribly when the bike was stopped or on its dual
kickstand, but also discovered that as soon as you started riding, the
front load's effects completely disappeared. It was magical compared to
riding it with the original fork and a similar front load (Platrack +
PlatSack). Not that you couldn't ride it or get used to it, but they
difference is felt more clearly and positively with a front load.

After the repaint, I installed the Tubus Nova lowrider with a pair of
Ostrich panniers and loaded them with the similar commute load I was using.
The difference in how the low front load feels compared to the front high
load is amazing. The steering is fantastic, as it was before, but with the
low load the front wheel flop when stopped or on the kickstand has
virtually disappeared. This combination makes riding the Hunqapillar with
the low front load absolutely amazing.

I have to try how the bike feels with a rear load only as well as combined
with the front load. While I doubt that I'll ride it with just a rear load,
I was getting shimmy with the original fork, especially with a rear load on
my large SaddleSack. I haven't had any shimmy on either the Atlantis or the
Hunqapillar so far with any of the loads I've used, which is very nice. On
the Atlantis I would also get the shimmy with no loads.

I haven't done any specific geometry measurements, but both bikes have low
trail forks with the rake set at 70mm which gives roughly a 40mm trail. The
difference is that I use 50mm tires on the Hunqapillar and 40mm tires on
the Atlantis. For comparison, the stock Atlantis 61 has a rake of 45mm, the
stock Hunqapillar 58 has a rake of 50mm and very telling (at least to me)
the Betty Foy 58 has a rake of 55mm. The combination of the Betty's higher
trail with the 650b tires make it the lowest trail stock Rivendell bike
(among the ones I have) and I've often wondered if that isn't one of the
qualities that make it so much fun to ride.

Since I'm not planning (for now) to use front loads on the Betty, I don't
really think I'll ever get a lower trail fork for it. It handles magically
as it is now. Regarding the Hilsen, I'm still undecided as I like riding it
with drop bars and a front Acorn Rando bag, but it's the one I ride the
 least right now.

Another fellow from the list came down to Palo Alto with his 61 Atlantis
and front load configuration as he wanted to get a first hand experience in
the differences between the stock and low trail Atlantis with his load. We
met and he rode both bicycles and although his had Albatross bars and mine
had the GB Randonneur bars, he went home as undecided as he had come. I
have no idea if he'll be ordering a low trail fork for his Atlantis or not,
my point is that preferences are going to be totally subjective.

They're accessible enough without being t. If you think of shifting
instantly as a your right as a cyclist, then you won't want 'em, but if you
see shifting as a nice convenience and then say OK, that's plenty
convenient (which maybe it isn't in some circumstances, but nothing that
Better Planning Foresight can't take care of), then there's just nothing
wrong with them. I like how they make a new bike out of any bike

although I like BES and Thumbies too--and I'm lazy enough to not undo what

Re: [RBW] Re: What's the Biggest Advantage of Stem-mounted Shifters?

2013-04-03 Thread PATRICK MOORE
I rather liked the very hefty and solid, chromed stem shifters on the
almost-pristine Collegiate I owned a few years ago (owned briefly -- sold
it). They shifted the wide range 5 speed fw very well through an Alvit --
don't know why people sneer at the Alvit.

That said, on any bike with anything except upright bars -- ie, if I am
bending over the bar -- I prefer bar end or down tube shifters, though for
frequent shifting there is very much to be said for the old Kelly Takeoffs
which I really liked for half stepping. They could be shifted from hoods or
hooks.

Better Planning Foresight can't take care of), then there's just nothing
wrong with them. I like how they make a new bike out of any bike

although I like BES and Thumbies too--and I'm lazy enough to not undo what
I've already got. On my next bike, I'm going for stemmies.

[RBW] Re: First Riv Ride

2013-04-03 Thread frank_a
While I've corresponded with many list members over the years it was nice
to actually meet and ride with one. Tom is a great addition to our Owners
Bunch. He's no newcomer to cycling, but it was cool to see his first ride
on a Rivendell bike. Tom hopped on the Saluki and took off down the block.
As he headed back I could see the smile. I hopped on my custom and we were
gone, as Tom said, for over an hour. We swapped bikes a few times along the
way. We Just Rode, I had a great time.
Hopefully he'll have his Sam soon.

Saluki (Albatross bars 650b wheels) and his Riv custom (Nitto Noodles

around the area of suburban streets and the nearby U of Miami campus for
over an hour . . . I had no doubts about my recent purchase of a Sam frame,
but now I have a little experience under that impression, based on two
different bikes and bars. As we are about the same size, no adjustments
were necessary moving between the two bikes.

All I can say is, Wow! The Saluki felt all-day comfortable, right off
(I think the saddle was a B68, very nice in the upright riding position),
and the Riv custom, with a B17 and the Noodles . . . felt like it was made
for me (sorry, Frank). The shifting on both bikes was nearly effortless; I
had brought along old memories of friction shifters of less-than-Campy
quality, and the silver shifters on both bikes dispelled those thoughts
immediately, making shifts as easily as anything indexed; in fact, with
more pleasure. I already understood why some of us end up owning several
bikes; now I understand why some readers wind up with a roomful of Rivs.
  Many thanks, Frank! --Tom

Re: [RBW] Re: Repainted and rebuilt low trail Hunqapillar

2013-04-03 Thread René Sterental
I like the reverse brake levers a lot on the Bosco bars. The whole straight
back section is now clean and you can place your hands anywhere on it, all
the way up to and including the curves. The great benefit of the reverse
brake lever is that pretty much excluding the curved section, you have
access to your brake levers if all of a sudden you need to slow down. For
me, from all but the most forefront section near the curves, I can reach
the brake levers with my pinkie and annular (ring) fingers. When additional
braking power is needed, I move my hands closer to the brake levers.

In this regard, the Tektro 4.1 reverse brake levers were more user friendly
than the Paul's, since the lever is a bit longer. However, I found them to
be really squishy and remove a lot of the braking power, which was really
noticeable on my Betty with the Racer/Silver F/R brakes. I first installed
them on the Hunqapillar as well, and with the Neo-Retro/Touring brakes the
effect was still there, so I changed to the Paul's reverse levers and the
braking immediately improved and now feels comparable to how it felt with
the MTB like brake levers. This weekend I'm installing the Paul's on the
Betty as well. (3 sets of Tektro 4.1 levers will be up for sale soon)

Bottom line, unless you insist on having bar-end shifters on either Bosco
or Albatross bars, or any other bar that accepts them, I think reverse
brake levers is the way to go.

René

47 miles and 3700 feet of climbing. Start is in Ventura, Up the

drop back into Ojai, then home through a combination of country roads and
the river trail. Meet up in Ventura near Garden St and Santa Clara by 9

We will be taking breaks for re-groups etc. I recommend 3 water bottles
as a minimum for the climb up Sulphur. Tires 32mm wide for the dirt,
gearing for 8-10% grades and brakes in order for the back side of the
mountain are all suggested as well.

We will stop at one of the many options for lunch in Ojai to grab
something quick to eat and get back on the Road.

This is a no host ride and not associated or sponsored by Ocean Air

 ride.
Feel free to invite friends and spread the word. The ride is all about
having fun and enjoying the local scenery, pace is moderate, by no means
 a

I am looking forward to riding with all of you, meeting some new

Re: [RBW] Re: Experimenting with crank length

2013-04-03 Thread hsmitham
Well another great topic and one that applies to the well being of every
cyclist as riding then having pain is counter productive. Thanks Jim!

Now on to my non-scientific opinion, I'm 5' 101/2 with a PBH of 83.5
riding with a 170 mm crank arms. I used to ride exclusively with 172.5
cause that's what the industry seems to suggest for a 54 cm frame.

After reading Garth's thoughts I went for a ride and mid ride I moved my
SPD cleats back effectively moving my mid foot over the pedal spindle,
jumped back on the bike and started to pedal. Almost immediately I felt
more power per stroke. The crank length felt like my old 172.5 mm crank
arms, after a couple of miles I felt a nagging pain around my right hip,
pulled over and lowered my saddle a mm or so and continued, hip pain gone!
Road the rest of my ride this way and am amazed at the difference. I seem
to be really sensitive to all the different angles, a little off and I feel
it! I rode today and felt a bit more muscle fatigue in my quads this is
either because I'm a outta shape lump or the new angles related to the
position change. I still think I need to dial in the saddle height and ride
more miles so this experiment continues.

One last thing it seems to me that the longer the crank arm related to the
individuals leg length the greater for an extreme on the up stroke and
creating a need for more force on the down stroke this greater range of
motion plus extra force would seem to me to add up to some orthopedic
issues especially as one grows older as in my case. In my twenty's and

Not exactly a Riv-specific topic, but I think some of you folks will find
this interesting, and I'd appreciate any insight. Maybe Jan has done a
study, or will do one soon.

Over the years, I've used cranks in 165, 170, and 175 mm lengths, and all
seem to be ok. I think I prefer the shorter end of the range, 165 and 170
mm cranks (I'm just short of average height at 5'8), but 175 works well
enough. Anyway, it sort of blows my mind that with the wide variance in
human sizes, and bikes and parts to address most of that variance, that the
total difference from short to long in the crank world is only 10 mm.
 So if you're 6'5, you're supposed to ride 175. If you're 5'9 you maybe
ride 170. If you're 5'2, obviously, you'd ride 165. My point here is that
it's ludicrous that a teeny-tiny 5 mm change in crank length could account
for, say, 6-8 in overall body height. It's doubly ludicrous that a person
can easily have, for example, 25-50 mm of saddle fore-aft adjustment (with
different saddles/seatposts) on any given frame, but only 5-10 mm to be
gained or lost switching cranks. It's a tough subject to discuss without
anecdotal bias because if you're somewhat close to average, you probably do
ok with whatever you're riding. If you're really tall, you could probably
be riding 180, 190, or even 200 mm cranks with improved efficiency and
ergonomics, but you've probably always been ok on 175. If you're really
short, even a short 165 may put your knees and hips through the wringer
on every pedal stroke. But we've all been forced to choose from these
limited offerings, and obviously we're still pedaling, so it must be
tolerable. Still, of all the ergonomic considerations on bikes, this is the
only part that moves regularly, and repetitive motion injuries are no joke,
so it makes sense to get it right, or closer to right.

My ladyfriend Abby is pretty short - 5'3 with shortish legs. She has a 46
cm LHT and a 14 Pugsley that fit her pretty well. She had to cut a tour
short last summer because of knee pain and swelling after several days on
her LHT. The cranks on the LHT at the time were 170 mm Deore with big ring
replaced with bashguard, so crank gearing was 24/36/bash. After the trip
and the knee issues, I set her up with some 152 mm Sugino XD (same gearing
as before) that QBP sells and went as narrow on the BB as possible. So far
the shorter, narrower crank seems like a winner, but she hasn't really put
it to a serious test yet. My hunch is that better ergonomics equals better
speed/efficiency, even if she loses a little theoretical leverage with
 shorter cranks. Time will tell.

But now I'm going to shorten a crank for her Pugsley (hard to find a stock
pug-compatible crank under 170 mm). Since I'm not relying on a commercially
available crankarm length, I decided to think about it a little more
deeply. Tonight I drew a crude picture of some triangles and levers and
pivots that represent the leg-to-crank/pedal relationship, and I took Knee
Over Pedal Spindle (KOPS) as a goal for my analysis. KOPS has some known
flaws, but it's close enough for my purposes. Then I started putting all
the trigonometry into a spreadsheet, varying everything at different saddle
heights and seat tube angles, solving for crank length, and taking the
results with a big grain of salt (margin of error). In general, short legs
and slack seat tubes mean cranks should be shorter. Longer legs and/or
steeper seat tubes mean cranks should be longer. But much more impressive
than that observation, is the range of crank lengths this predicts. If
you're short, say 70 pbh, and you have a slack seat tube, you will probably
do ok on 120 mm cranks. If you're riding comfortably on a 72 cm AHH, 200 mm
arms would be more or less optimum if they don't drag on the ground. My
computation shows that my own optimum is in the mid 160s for the seat
tube angles I usually ride, which I know to be true from experience and
perception (though not from a controlled scientific experiment). My
ladyfriend should be on a 140 mm crank given her PBH and the 73deg ST on
her Pugs. I should point out that these specific values are based on
numerous wild-ass assumptions, and they should be understood to have a
large margin of error. I wouldn't bet my life on any specific result. I
would, however, wager that the range of optimal crank lengths is MUCH
larger than what is widely available to us. I'd also suggest that tallies
and shorties are not being well-served in this department.

 shortened cranks:

I've taken a solid year to dial in my saddle height, tilt, front to back
position etc. I make sure to only change one thing at a time and see how it
goes for a 5+ hours of riding, including one ride of at least 3 hours, then
shift as needed. WIth a mid-foot position on the peddles, I like my saddle
lower (like many of you have described, and farther forward on the post.
It's currently all the way forward, and my next play is to try it back
from there slightly. It is amazing how the various adjustments interplay,
with one shift leading to a re-adjustment of another that had been dialed
in. Of course I'm only back to cycling for a year, after many years away,
plus I have a very shallow learning curve not having memory, so hopefully
you are faster at this than I am!

[RBW] What's that response called, and which model has it?

2013-04-03 Thread Reid
Hi all -- I know there's a term for a bike that seems to spring ahead on
its own when one is pedaling. The frame seems to absorb part of the power
from pedaling and then let it loose at just the right time. My Romulus is
like that. The bike seems alive!

So once someone recalls the terminology for that urge, can anyone tell me
if the Sam Hillborn or the AHH tend to have that response? Or which one
would be more likely to be that way? I know that the AHH has a bit thinner
tubing than the Sam, although I have no idea whether or not that makes a
difference. Would the Sam or the AHH tube thickness be closer to the
Romulus?

You can tell that I want my next Riv to behave like the Romulus. And yes,
even though the Rom is a great bike, after all these years, I NEED another
Riv.

Thanks for any ideas.

Springiness, liveliness, and the terrible planing.

Others will doubtless say different, and take into account my weight -- 175
-- but I found the Sam HIll (single top tube, 56) to be rather dull in this
regard -- much like the Fargo. It was a decent bike and if it had accepted
fatter tires I'd have kept it, but it didn't spring like my Riv roads.
OTOH, it seems to be one of the most popular Rivs.

Weight is not necessarily the issue, either: the Herse I owned was a tank
(and I didn't care for the handling) but it felt fast -- wonder if this was
because it fit so well?

the loop a bit from years past, and you can see this year's route here:

 http://ridewithgps.com/routes/2159896http://ridewithgps.com/routes/2159896

47 miles and 3700 feet of climbing. Start is in Ventura, Up the
River Trail to sulphur Mtn where it is a 10 mile dirt climb, with a
 great
drop back into Ojai, then home through a combination of country roads
 and
the river trail. Meet up in Ventura near Garden St and Santa Clara by
 9
and hit the road around 9:30. This is a no man left behind sort of
 ride.
We will be taking breaks for re-groups etc. I recommend 3 water
 bottles
as a minimum for the climb up Sulphur.

Cycles, just a bunch of like minded folks getting together for a fun
 ride.
Feel free to invite friends and spread the word. The ride is all
 about
having fun and enjoying the local scenery, pace is moderate, by no
 means a
hammer fest, but the climbing will likely test your endurance.

I am looking forward to riding with all of you, meeting some new

 Bridgestone bikes on a 0-100 scale (100 being a 2004 Rivendell Custom; 5
being a Magna mountain department store bike):

 45 for high-end Bstones,
 35 for mid-range Bstones.

*Though he states that Bstones are and were good bikes and noone should
feel bad about their Bstone for getting rated a 45 or less. He said they
were exceptional compared to their same-priced contemporaries.*

2013-04-03 Thread Michael

This is a current stock Riv road NITTO 'stache as of March, 2013. I also
have an old 'stache and it is pretty much the same.

There are other brands of 'staches, and maybe they are longer reach. I
think there was/is a NITTO mountain version of this bar, too. Maybe that
has a different reach.

I think it will be fun to try other styles of bars. I am used to drops, so
I am looking forward to trying moustache and Albatross bars to see how they
feel.

 back end of
the loop a bit from years past, and you can see this year's route
 here:

 http://ridewithgps.com/routes/**2159896http://ridewithgps.com/routes/2159896

47 miles and 3700 feet of climbing. Start is in Ventura, Up the
River Trail to sulphur Mtn where it is a 10 mile dirt climb, with a
 great
drop back into Ojai, then home through a combination of country
 roads and
the river trail. Meet up in Ventura near Garden St and Santa Clara
 by 9
and hit the road around 9:30. This is a no man left behind sort of
 ride.
We will be taking breaks for re-groups etc. I recommend 3 water
 bottles
as a minimum for the climb up Sulphur. Tires 32mm wide for the
 dirt,
gearing for 8-10% grades and brakes in order for the back side of
 the
mountain are all suggested as well.

We will stop at one of the many options for lunch in Ojai to
grab something quick to eat and get back on the Road.

This is a no host ride and not associated or sponsored by Ocean
Air Cycles, just a bunch of like minded folks getting together for
 a fun
ride. Feel free to invite friends and spread the word. The ride
 is all
about having fun and enjoying the local scenery, pace is moderate,
 by no
means a hammer fest, but the climbing will likely test your
 endurance.

I am looking forward to riding with all of you, meeting some new
friends and sharing some of the best riding our region has to offer.

[RBW] Re: What's the Biggest Advantage of Stem-mounted Shifters?

2013-04-03 Thread Jan Heine
I wonder why few bikes in recent years have put the shifters on the top
tube. That was common in the 1930s, when most cyclotourists rode in a more
upright position. Top tube-mounted shifters would be as accessible as
stem-mounted ones, but you'd eliminate the cable housing (the shifters no
longer have to turn with the fork) and thus get a lighter, more positive
system. With modern top-pull derailleurs, the cable routing would be easy -
cyclocross style along the top tube and down the seat tube (front
derailleur) and seatstay (rear derailleur).

lot. If anyone is ever interested in helping get it dirty by going for a
ride somewhere in the bay area, let me know!

cheers,

 Hi folks,

For a long time now, I've been reading these pages and also saving up for
my first rivendell. I've learned so much over the years from the riv
readers and from conversations with those fine folks that it hardly felt
like a choice! After a worthwhile wait, I picked up my Atlantis on Friday.
It's a 58 cm frame, ready for anything. I recently moved to the bay area
and didn't bring my car, so this bike is ready for my (very pleasant 15
mile) commute, heavy loads of anything (groceries etc), and lots of fun
weekend rides and camping trips to get to know the area (and some longer
west coast rides over the summers). I've been reading/lurking on here for
so long that I felt compelled to share my excitement/enthusiasm and post a
picture of my bike as yet another example of the myriad ways you can set up
a rivendell! Thanks to all the fine folks at rivendell for being so good
 at what they do.

stem-mounted ones, but you'd eliminate the cable housing (the shifters no

cyclocross style along the top tube and down the seat tube (front

Like this, you mean? Very popular back in the 70s, I believe. But at

[RBW] What's that response called, and which model has it?

2013-04-03 Thread Joe Bernard
I've owned a Romulus and an AHH. They both felt about the same to me, with that
nice springy feel. That said, my new-to-me Rambouillet feels lighter/springier,
for what it's worth. I suspect it has slightly thinner tubing walls in the main
triangle.

[RBW] Re: Moustache vs. Noodle bar reach overlay with pics

There's also this.

On Wednesday, April 3, 2013 4:56:02 PM UTC-7, Michael wrote:

Just FYI for anyone who is interested which bar has a longer/shorter reach.

As you can see, I laid the 'stache over the noodles, lining up the clamp
area of the stache to where the clamp on the stem is and looks like
moustaches have a shorter reach than noodles both at the hooks and bar ends
 by about almost 2cm.

Keep in mind that the mouth of the hand (between thumb and first
finger) will be behind the metal part of the stache bar hook and not on a
 hood, like on drops.

But will it* feel* like a shorter reach in real use (that would be good!)?

See ya there.
