[RBW] Re: Minimalist Riding Shoes

2013-09-15 Thread Deacon Patrick
Your right, Ron, room for toe and forefoot splay is critical. I like to
have an extra 1/4-1/2 width (total from both sides) on the sides, as the
foot splays that much when running. I'm glad you've found what works for
you.

I've also ridden 20 miles in the rain without no slip on the pedal.

I also wet-wade hill country rivers - miles on rocks hiking and wading.
Been through lots of shoes and when I find a system that works for my
feet, I order them in spares. When Keen closed out their Hood River wading

Merrill Kahuna sandals from the UK to get a pair. Foot binding? No, a
pair of shoes that fits lets your feet have the same feeling as your hands

Merrill also has a line of barefoot shoes (I know, right?!), which have

flat feet and had needed orthotics since I was 12. My feet strengthened
and I now have a clearly defined arch that functions properly as the
windlass mechanism it is. My wife and a number of people on the minimalist

greatly strengthened their feet and improved. Turns out most shoes are
modern foot binding devices disguised as technology -- that over protect
and weaken our feet rendering them incapable of proper function without
slowly being exposed to freedom. A marketing/production cycle not unlike

[RBW] Re: Low Normal Derailers

2013-09-15 Thread Mojo
I have a low normal RD on my LHT used with friction downtube Simplex
shifters and 8speed cassette. I have said here before that the 8 speed
shifting is too easy, and I will likely replace it with 9speed when I wear
out this chain.
I do like it on a touring bike; if the cable ever broke it would rest in
the large cog for easy (yet slow) 3speed pedaling to the next bike shop.

I agree it takes a minor mental shift (pun intended) to get the shift I
want, but its no real mental effort. Its my only bike with friction
shifting so its the 'normal' now.

randonneurs on the 2013 SF Randonneurs Fall Populaire. Starting in San
Fransisco's Crissy Field, we headed north over the Golden Gate Bridge,
hopped over a hill or two and looped out around China Camp Village before
heading westward (back into a mild headwind and increasing fog) to the most
distant control at Nicasio. Then headed back through the San Geronimo
Valley to Fairfax and the obscure but direct route back to San Francisco.
Course was about 70 miles, punctuated by appropriate stops for controls and
caloric intake.

Had spent a too-long chunk of Friday running down some technical anomalies
on the Quickbeam. The chain was too worn to trust for the course and after
removing it, I realized what a thought was a bent guard ring proved to be a
more ingrained issue. I'm still not completely sure of the cause, but the
whole arm/spider has a bit of a wobble to it. The working theory had been
a bent BB spindle, found that the same arm wiggled no matter which bicycle
it was mounted on (had stripped off the cranks from the
waiting-for-Brooks-to-finally-call-me-back-so-I-can-deal-with-the-broken-rails
Hilsen, assuming I'd be swapping the BB over). Cursed and pondered and
decided to clean up the Hilsen and swap over the saddle from the QB. And
the Hilsen ended up in a nicely stripped down mode - with the recently
cleaned and rewaxed Baggins Banana Bag attached, it would hold my ritual
two-tubes-two-patch-kits offering for any brevet ride, as well as
appropriate gear for a mild, mid-September ride. So, all that remained was
getting up, getting the dogs walked and fed, and hightailing it into the
city for the ride.

Which pretty much is where I started - sipping strong coffee from a thermos
cup as riders gathered in the fog on the generally unpopulated East Beach
at Crissy Field. I'd arrived past some significant parking infrastructure
- mobile gates and grates and cones and hi-viz folks with flags and
flashlights. No, the Populaire does not typically generate that much
traffic, but they've been racing these sail-driven projectiles within yards
of the shore over the past couple weeks, and in another few hours, parking
would become absolutely nonexistent.

Signed in and got my card. Realized I had absoutely nothing to write with
- DOH! - so I would be relying on the kindness of others to supply a pen at
the Nicasio Info Control. After returning the coffee rental, I saw that a
larger pack had amassed, and RBA (Regional Brevet Administrator) Rob Hawks
welcomed the new riders (about half the group) and led us in our pledge
not to do anything stupid before sending us out on the course. Just
about that time, I darned near stepped on ride buddy JimG (yojimg.net) and
we greeted one another warmly. He was anticpating the inaugural ride on
his Box Dog Bikes Pelican.

Of course, we immediately got separated as everyone picked up their bikes
and wove their way to the road. I had decided to under-do things for the
first bits, as I wasn't sure how I'd feel. For some reason, the switch
from fixed-gear (the Quickbeam) to a many-geared-coastable setup can mean a
very clunky first ride, as I overdo it in the big gears and feel a loss of
momentum when climbing. And I also realized it was probably my longest
ride of the year so far. At least I'd managed a couple of 50+ rides on the
QB, even though some of the steeper climbs were prone to cussing and
stopping.

Rolled up to the bridge with a variety of SF Jerseyed folks and
well-appointed rigs. Counted at least 3 or 4 Hilsens without even looking
for them. Coughed and woke up and worked my way over the span and down
into Sausalito with a minimum of extra effort. Seemed to just make every
yellow light on Bridgeway, which put me alone along the Mill Valley Bike
Path to the base of the first hill. But as the light turned green JimG and
a gang of folks joined me. The Camino Alto hill kind of worked out the
kinks, and I found some comfort climbing seated, which is not generally an
option afforded by riding fixed. Then buzzed down the descent while
thanking the density of my bones. Caught up to the JimG group and promptly
lost them on the climb to San Rafael, but by then I was feeling pretty good
on the bike, almost like someone had flipped a switch. As we headed around
China Camp to the first control, I managed to tack onto a triplet-led
(y'know, like a tandem but built for three) train and boogied along
happily. Fell back in with JimG and we found a mutually compatible pace,
so we rolled to the first control, had RBA Rob sign/timestamp our cards and
headed onward.

As we pressed slightly uphill and upwind in Lucas Valley, JimG admitted he
hadn't eaten anything for a while (turned out to be dinner or breakfast,
so... yeah.) We deli-stopped and stretched out, chatted with a rider (whose
name I forgot) on a custom ~75 cm

[RBW] Hard ass saddle

2013-09-15 Thread Patrick Moore
This is the 30K mile Flite from which I removed original and very tattered
cover, and the padding came off with it. I covered the plastic base with
nice, nickel-thick leather.

A few more miles on the skin-covered nylon base. I was telling myself when
I started out this afternoon that, I would not want to ride this on a
century -- it's definitely harder than with the ~5 mm of padding that came
on it originally, but -- interesting -- while it can intrude on the sit
bones, the shape is just right, unlike, say, the original Turbo and, oddly
enough, a couple of Flites I've owned, which seem too rounded and
therefore intrusive. This has the perfect flat rearmost part.

I had to squirm a bit to get the sit bones comfortable -- and this may be
due to the baggy nylon boxers and khaki shorts I was wearing and our
present high humidity -- but afterward the saddle seemed to disappear.

Odd: I rode in the aforementioned khaki shorts and a Hawaiian shirt, but
among all the riders out on this our first sunny day after a week of heavy
rain, the only others wearing street clothes were those on squeaking
WalMart pseudo mountain bikes. Everyone else, even casual riders on
flat-bar'd hybrids, are wearing lycra shorts and tops.

(I must say that I did wish for a trimmer-fitting top, as I rode into a
headwind with the size L shirt flapping around me. But I'll trade comfort
for aero any day, at least for this sort of 10 out and 10 back ride.)

Just two 10 mile segments (on the Riv to a party this afternoon). More
testing to come.

Garth -- In fact, I did not know about them -- thanks for the reference.
I'll ride my home-covered job for a while, though, before I decide whether
to pass it on to a professional.

Segway: I was fortunate to receive a number of rough cut shoe inserts from
Tony Colgrave, in Britain, who re-covers Brooks saddles with leather that
is considerably better even than the original. Some years ago I had
blathered onlist about liking boat shoes for cycling except that they
weren't stiff enough. He sent me some rough cut blanks cut from leftover
saddle covers and I have to say that this leather is remarkably thick,
solid, yet pliable -- it is the thickness that protects the foot, not the
stiffness alone.

[RBW] FS: RIv Rambouillet, 60cm, F/F/HS

2013-09-15 Thread Mike Gillespie
Hi Folks,
I need to sell my 2001 Rivendell Rambouillet frame, fork, and original Tange
headset.  Orange paint, fancy lugs, size 60cm.  Condition is very good for a
frame of this vintage.  There is no rust or dents, but the typical number of
minor paint chips and scratches.  Photos can be seen at:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/55639583@N04/sets/72157635540851884/

I'm asking $1,000 plus actual shipping costs.

I believe this frame is one of those early versions with the high rear brake
bridge.  Although I used a set of Suntour Superbe long-reach brakes without
problems, I did need to file the slot a bit on a pair of Tektro R538 (Big
Mouth) brakes.  I can include this Tektro brake set with this frame (great
brakes!) for an additional $50, in excellent, near new condition.

Contact me with any questions, additional photos, etc.

Re: [RBW] Re: Now taking a poll for the month of September SoCal Riv Ride Santa Monica

2013-09-15 Thread Hugh Smitham
Hey SoCal Rivsters,

Figured I'd update the poll and firm up the ride specifics.

The poll is done and the winner is the 28th. Here is the ride thanks to
Cyclotourist:

http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Santa-Monica-Dirt-Mulolland-ride#

As far as a place to eat I submit this casual establishment it would be a
back track of 1.5 miles but the total ride is a mere 27 odd miles so I
don't see a down side.

http://reelinnmalibu.com/menu.php

Parking will be a challenge so I suggest we get there early, I think this
lot will serve us well. Can we meet at 8:30 am? Or shall we chance it and
keep the meet up @ 9 am.

Lot 10 North
445 E Pacific Coast Hwy.
Santa Monica, Ca
162 spaces

The information from Santa Monica City is confusing I found this PDF with
locations and cost whether it's up to date is a guess but from this it
appears that the cost is $7 for the day which you pay at a kiosk.

http://theartofsexualintimacy.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Parking_Brochure.pdf

The Address above originally if searched showed you a location South of
Santa Monica??

So I think that's about that. Looking forward to the 28th.

Well done ride report! Just the breakfast burrito makes me wish I was on

Course was about 70 miles, punctuated by appropriate stops for controls and

Had spent a too-long chunk of Friday running down some technical anomalies

removing it, I realized what a thought was a bent guard ring proved to be a

the Hilsen ended up in a nicely stripped down mode - with the recently
cleaned and rewaxed Baggins Banana Bag attached, it would hold my ritual
two-tubes-two-patch-kits offering for any brevet ride, as well as
appropriate gear for a mild, mid-September ride. So, all that remained was
getting up, getting the dogs walked and fed, and hightailing it into the
 city for the ride.

Which pretty much is where I started - sipping strong coffee from a
thermos cup as riders gathered in the fog on the generally unpopulated East
Beach at Crissy Field. I'd arrived past some significant parking
infrastructure - mobile gates and grates and cones and hi-viz folks with
flags and flashlights. No, the Populaire does not typically generate that
much traffic, but they've been racing these sail-driven projectiles within
yards of the shore over the past couple weeks, and in another few hours,
 parking would become absolutely nonexistent.

Just
about that time, I darned near stepped on ride buddy JimG (yojimg.net)
and we greeted one another warmly. He was anticpating the inaugural ride
on his Box Dog Bikes Pelican.

Hey Fellows,

Let me know if you'd rather do street parking or the lot as I scoped out.
David is submitting this as a choice:

pete's on Montana 14th as a staging area.
Street parking w/in a couple blocks, bike friendly spot.

Don't know what the parking situation would be like time limits and or
Neighborhood permits?? Also the Restaurant idea is just a suggestion
totally open to input. Here's David's input:

Border Grill which is a fave.

Re: [RBW] SF Randonneurs Fall Populaire Report/Photos

2013-09-15 Thread Toshi Takeuchi
Pretty much the only riding I've done since June is commuting to work
on my AHH a few times a week. However, it's not bad exercise
considering I get a solid hour of cycling with plenty of sweating
(luckily I have a shower at work). The Populaire was a perfect ride
for my friend and I to just enjoy the day and not have to worry about
time or being too tired.

I saw at least 3 other AHH. They were all built up differently. One
was a go light machine with a Mark's wrap in the back. Another had a
rando bag on Mark's rack on front. Mine had a front and rear rack with
a saddlebag and a rando bag up front. I could definitely have
lightened up for the ride, but this bike has been my best friend as of
late as is, so I had fun riding it that way.

Here's a picture of me (on the left) and my buddy courtesy of Deb Ford:

http://rx-bike-qd.smugmug.com/gallery/31881402_mHm24j/2766329843_ZF3nGf6#!i=2766384577k=TFNtH7Z

It was a super fun ride and for a $5 entry fee, somehow SFR manages to
have such a fun picnic at the end with beers, snacks and a meal (and
fine company)!

[RBW] Re: Bad Boy Sam Hilborne got his albas inverted for a late summer afternoon ride

2013-09-15 Thread Tom Virgil
Hi Patrick,

There are a continuum of of possibilities for hand positions in the
standard or inverted configurations. I was not using them in the standard
configuration. I organized things so that being on the grips was optimal
for me. Moving out to the hooks made me too far and too low at the same
time. Inverting the bars, and raising the stem so I still had my good grip
position put the hook position in a much more comfortable place. Between
the grips and the hooks is now more comfortable. It's probably just me. I
would not prescribe it or preach it to the rest of our folks, but it is
something to try. And it does present a different ascetic approach to bars.

Take care and blessings,

Tom

Looks great, Tom. Intriguing about the hand positions. I have a hard time
imagining how you get more hand positions, could you tell me more?

It's definitely easier to move from the grips to the hooks and have more

Hope you are all getting in rides.

[RBW] Need life advice? Explore by bike!

2013-09-15 Thread Manuel Acosta
New job, new commuting route, new places to explore.

Still trying to figure out a solid way back home. Lots of opportunity to
mixed it up but still looking for more dirt. Got the idea to explore around
Tilden area. Great minds think alike when I got Sean, Tom, and Mark to show
up.

Rambled around, walked a ton, pushed the limits of the Ruffy Toughys, swore
that we broke spokes, surprised that we didn't, then had some greek food.

Felt good after lunch so I rode some more while the rest of the crew called
it in. Found great connectors to old rides, only thing that kept me from
exploring more was time constraints. Still a blast on the bike.

Pictures proved that the best life advice is to explore by bike!
