I'm so happy to hear from those of you who've already committed to this! I hope we can maintain and expand this enthusiasm over the next 8 months! I'm not sure what we have for BBs in the twin cities, but there are certainly plenty of lodging options. For those who'd like to camp, I will likely be able to offer my backyard or suggest some unofficial campgrounds. Perhaps other locals will be able to offer a backyard or a spare bedroom or couch? If you're going to make a hotel reservation and not have a car, check with me first to make sure your hotel is reasonably bike-convenient (either in a bike-friendly area or near light rail transit). For riding, I'm envisioning some mixed surface local explorations encompassing everything from our excellent urban bike infrastructure to minimally maintained dirt trails that most local cyclists don't know about. [RBW] Re: Sam Hillborne- why the switch from cantilever/center pulls?
I wouldn't want a Sam with canti myself , having used cantis for decades . They're not necessary . Canti's are a real mixed bag too, as there is no standard in how far apart the bosses are, nor can there be. Every frame is different. So not every canti is going to work well with every frame. This, from my own experience. Even the bosses themselves don't have a precise standard, there are many manufacturers. I've had some that are a little longer or shorter than others from frame to frame. Bottom line is to have a variety of canti brakes on hand when putting together a bike :) No need to envy that !!! -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: Sam Hillborne- why the switch from cantilever/center pulls?
I've been lucky: Silver brakes on Hillborne with mountain levers. Never has felt spongy in 4 years of use. I like both brake styles, but the unbelievable ease of bike assembly when sidepulls are used with mountain levers has become a big plus for me. This possibility has been around for decades, obviously, but Grant's addition of being able to do this and still use very large tires is something that I think makes the Hillborne an amazing bike. I have Rock and Road 43's in there. (With cantis, you could do that plus fender, so there's one facet of the tradeoff!) - Jim W. [RBW] Re: Visit to RBW HQ and the Hatchet Shop
One time on the train returning home from a ride, I met a couple who'd ridden from San Diego to Santa Barbara, using only GPS. They were mis-directed a lot but the capper was sending them directly inland at the west end of Ventura! Instead of a relatively flat ride along the water, it sent up utility service roads finally dead-ended them at a water tank (note: water tanks are always at the top of a hill). The guy called the emergency number on the gate was told he wasn't getting to Santa Barbara that way. As smart as GPS is, there's still a random element there somewhere just to keep it fun. On top of that, I don't trust any appliance that's smarter than I am. dougP On Saturday, January 11, 2014 10:30:19 PM UTC-8, Eric Norris wrote: Monsieur Blériot and I went out for a little ride from Suisun City to Walnut Creek today—a chance for Msr. B to visit Rivendell HQ for the first time. The ride ended up being about 25 miles longer than planned, primarily because I trusted the not-very-smart GPS route-finding function of my Garmin 800 … and partly because I blindly followed it while we went over hill and dale and assiduously avoided the most direct and logical route. See, the shortest way to Walnut Creek from Suisun City is to ride more or less south, passing through Benicia, Martinez, and Pleasant Hill on the way. But when I put the address for RBW into my Garmin and hit “navigate,” it apparently decided that route wasn’t long enough. When we *could* have continued riding south from Benicia toward Martinez, Garnin instead said, “Go West!” … and we ended up on a long and hilly route out to Vallejo. Somewhere out past Crockett, I finally wised up and stopped using the Garmin. “I know,” I said to myself, “I’ll use Google Maps!” I had my iPhone with me, so I again input RBW’s address and went merrily on my way. All was good … until Google’s algorithms decided that, rather than continue on a nice, paved road, I should be on an *un*paved trail. I followed that—hiking up some of the hills—for about a mile before I convinced myself that the trail was diverging farther and farther into the wilderness and farther and farther *away* from where I wanted to be. I never claim to be quick-thinking when on the bike, but eventually I catch on. Once I got back to pavement after the dirt sojourn (I was glad I had 42mm tires!), the rest of the ride was pretty uneventful. I visited both RBW and the Hatchet Shop, bought a reflective ankle bank to replace the one I lost a few years ago, got a cool RBW pin and magnet for *free*, and rode home. Are you talking about brake clearance for a knibblie cross tire? I rode a few CX races on the Hilsen, which had the original long-reach Silvers. [RBW] Re: Sam Hillborne- why the switch from cantilever/center pulls?
The original concept of the AHH (which the Sam is based on) was Country Bike, a road bike which could easily accept fat tires and fenders, and handle the occasional trail ride. People tend to associate lighter/simpler sidepull calipers with road bike, and I think these bicycles are in that genre. It also differentiates the Sam more from the canti-equipped Atlantis, Hunqapillar and Bombadil, all of which have more of a touring/dirt personality. I don't know if this is actually why the change was made..just a guess. It's also possible the early Sam's were always intended to have sidepulls, but the builder messed up. Remember Canti-Roms? [RBW] Is the Hunqapillar an updated Atlantis or a budget version of the Bombadil?
In recent writings Grant has mentioned that the Hunqapillar is basically a budget version of the Bombadil. Yet, on Jim's website is this quote: *Update on the Atlantis for the future - * One of the realities of our current global economy is a continued devaluation of the US dollar against the yen. In mid-2009, some rumors began to surface that if things continued that direction, it might be necessary to have the Atlantis production moved away from Toyo. As you would expect with this most popular model, a great concern erupted about the possible disappearence of the Atlantis. Some of the realities were enumerated with the Rivendell Holiday 2009 email, which noted: We have a dwindling number of what seems to be the last of the Japanese-built Atlantis frames. They are stratospherically expensive to buy, and your price, $2,000 for frame-fork-headset, counts only if you buy a complete Atlantis from us. Frame only is now $2,300. Sometimes next year we'll likely bring in a Taiwan-built Atlantis, also built under the guidance of Tetsu Ishigaki; and the fork will be made in the old Toyo shop, in Japan. There may be some changes. Fewer sizes, more upslope on the TT.It will be a good, good bike. So, was the bike now known as the Hunqapillar simply a revised version of the Atlantis that ended up being renamed due to people's nostalgia over the original Atlantis? Re: [RBW] Re: Sam Hillborne- why the switch from cantilever/center pulls?
FWIW, although I have generally eschewed (which, being translated, signifieth, generally, chewed and spit out instead of being swallowed) cantis after 2 decades of annoyance, which may be due solely to my own mechanical incompetence, I found the IRD cantis that came on the floor model Sam Hill (set up by the super-talented elves at Rivendell, of course) to be the best brakes I've used in my entire life, bar none at all. As powerful as any dual pivot - hell, as powerful as any V-brake or mechanical disk set up by Vaughn, and a lot better in modulation and feel. Just smoth, incrementally and progressively more power as you pulled the levers, until the wheels locked, and that with not very much power required. But those, again, were set up by elves. I've never heard that the different cantilever brake models work better when matched with certain frames. I'm not denying, just questioning. True? False? Also, I've heard that long-reach (ie, +57 mm) calipers aren't as powerful (or, at least, require more hand force for a given power) as ones with shorter arms -- ie, they flex). True? False? On Sun, Jan 12, 2014 at 9:26 AM, Garth garth...@gmail.com wrote: I wouldn't want a Sam with canti myself , having used cantis for decades . They're not necessary .
One more aside about brakes: Road BB7s -- even with 180 mm rotors, no-flecks housing, organic pads, professional setup -- were literally as bad as the properly set up rod brakes I used as a boy in India. At least, on my erstwhile Monocog 29er, they were actually that bad. The mtb-model BB7s -- used with Tektro V-brake drop bar levers -- are a different thing altogether. Re: [RBW] WTT: Sam for Simple One or QB
What about a rear wheel rebuild with an ENO hub? Or, even cheaper, a used ENO rear wheel, which I see offered on this or the iBoblist from time to time? Or cheaper yet, a chain tensioner? (You don't say that you want to ride fixed.) I got many very pleasant fixed gear commuting miles out of a '95 Riv Road Custom using an ENO; ironic, since at the time Grant was pushing horizontals and I stubbornly held out for verticals. I also built a *very* nice drop bar mtb fixie all rounder with an ENO and 60 mm Big Apples. Although I sold my Sam Hill, I think highly enough of it to suggest that selling it without any real dislike of any of its many particular qualitirs, just to try ss or fixed, just might end up being regretted. Re: [RBW] Sam Hillborne- why the switch from cantilever/center pulls?
I guess I'm not discriminating enough. I've never regarded the Silvers on my Riv Custom as 'spongy'. On my Tournesol I've got some fancy, pricy, Paul component centerpulls, mounted on centerpull posts, those brakes may be a bit more 'powerful' seeming than the Silvers. They don't impress me as being all that much better. In my world the Silvers are the value proposition when it comes to the balance of cost, performance, and lack of hassle. Maybe I'm a brake agnostic. -JimD On Jan 12, 2014, at 9:04 AM, Mike Schiller mikeybi...@rocketmail.com wrote: the downside is spongy feeling, lack of power and limited clearance for big tires. [RBW] Re: FS: XL Salsa Casseroll road bike, $750. Poor man's Ram/Rom/Roadeo/San Marcos!
Just a bump and reduction in asking price. $675 OBO. If you're interested, let's talk! Not exactly Rivendell, but I've always thought of this bike as my poor man's Rambouillet, being a versatile and comfortable road bike with high handlebars and good clearances. This is a early 2008 (caliper-brake) frame and fork that I bought new, having built and re-built it many times. It is the largest size, with the seat tube measuring 59cm center-top, but a sloping top tube and long head tube mean the frame fits like a traditional 62cm frame. Salsa Classico chromoly tubing. The frame uses 47-57mm reach brakes, allowing for a ~28mm tire with fenders and a ~37mm tire without; it currently has 28mm Ruffy Tuffy tires and SKS P35 fenders. Having long campy-style horizontal dropouts, I ran it for a long time as a fixed gear road bike, but in the past couple of years I've settled on a 2x7 derailleur setup. It has an eclectic but really functional mix of parts, including 7spd Shimano 600 DT shifters and derailleurs indexing perfectly with 7 of 8spds on a Campagnolo Athena cassette rear hub, Sugino XD 48/36 double crank, Shimano A550 front brake, Dia-Compe single pivot rear brake, Tektro R200 levers with gum hoods, Salsa Cowbell bars, Thomson Elite setback seat post. This is a definitely used but well-maintained bike; I'm a professional mechanic and like to keep my own bikes ship shape, if not perfectly clean. There is some minor paint wear on the downtube, top of the seat tube, and seat stays, but no rust. A full set of pictures, with more information on parts spec, can be found here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/85709120@N07/sets/72157639449138215/ Full frame geometry can be found on Salsa's bike archive: http://salsacycles.com/bikes/archive/casseroll_double Price is $750 OBO. Local pickup in the SF Bay Area (I'm in Berkeley) is preferred, but if you're really interested and not local we can work out something for shipping. [RBW] Re: Visit to RBW HQ and the Hatchet Shop
Nice detour there, but certainly not a bad ride. I live in MTZ and grew up in Suisun. I frequently ride to visit the parents who live out near the fringe of the housing tracts. Planning a February ride out to Davis (train back), so your tale is cautionary, as I plan my route. [RBW] Re: Is the Hunqapillar an updated Atlantis or a budget version of the Bombadil?
I think that none of the bicycle designs which come from RBW are particularly static. There are probably a few reasons for this. My writings and commentary about the Hunqapillar stem from the first iterations of the idea and a conversation which GP shared as the proto's were due for arrival. At that time, he described something which fit between the Atlantis and the Bombadil. And from those first prototypes, with the very different frame tube layout that what ended up being final (and, of course, if you want to see another example of that - the first Bombadil and the current version are quite distinct. Go here - http://cyclofiend.com/rbw/bombadil/ - and scroll down to the Blue version which Dirt Rag reviewed). But, not to digress, there is the very real aspect of cost - all the brazing and painting and uniqueness drive the price up. If there's a lug which can work in two designs, that helps. If there's a tube that doesn't need to be butted at the low stress end, then maybe a single-butted tube can be used. Another impact is the culmination of all the designs and prototypes and other solutions which GP has gone through, digested, refined and produced. That part of the process leads one to tweak this or simplify that so that the new design isn't just cookie-cuttered to less expensive manufacturing. So, no, I don't think the Hunq is a revised version of the Atlantis per se, but certainly influenced it - both in terms of where it should sit in the lineup of frames and the way that all of the RBW designs are refinements of the earlier designs. The LongLow certainly begat the Hilsen, for example, while the Hunq can easily trace its lineage through the Atlantis and the All-Rounder. Don't know if that answers your question or not. But, it's always an interesting discussion to consider the influences on each of the models. - Jim -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: Sam Hillborne- why the switch from cantilever/center pulls?
Of course, the varying width between mounting posts. No science here, but it does make sense in an intooitive kind of way. At any rate, the IRDs with Salmons on the Sam were a brake High Point in my experience. Wonderful brakes! There are large differences in how far the mounts are apart, namely due to the intended tire widths. So the fork blades and seat stays are different widths... very different ! For example , the Sun Tour XC Pro low profile canti works perfectly for the Franklin, but on the Bombadil the XC Pro's once I get the pads close enough , it diminishes the efficiency of the geometry of that design, rendering it weakly inefficient(poor yoke angle). Using vintage wider profile Shimano cantis , all works great. *Just* for what it's worth, I often treat my two secondary bikes, the 2X7 Ram and the 2X9 Fargo, as singlespeeds -- 'specially the first -- by keeping the drivetrain in the straight chainline gear (deliberately arranged to be the cruising gear; 70 for the Ram, 64 Fargo). [RBW] Wool Hoody, TNF Softshell, and REI vest for sale
Hi All I've decided that jackets are happier when they're being used so I've implemented a one-in-one-out policy. After the holiday I've got some barely used gems for sale and a couple I thought RBWOB members would be the best owners for them. If you're interested, send me an email. Priority will go to those who are either buying multiple or seem like really good homes. Pictures of all available here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/168j3gldu7lfhnf/TsOJ21iOqI/jackets 1) Gray Outlier Merino hoody (outlier.cc) size medium -$200 shipped to CONUS- Super soft merino wool hoody, perfect for riding. It has a nice long drop tail to keep the lower back warm, an enormous helmet compatible hood (in the picture that is a basketball in the hood to show how big it is. The ball is in a recycle bag to keep the hoodie clean). The pull cords have these wonderful little leather tabs that you slide up the chord to keep the hood cinched to whatever size you want. It has nice soft elasticized cuffs to keep the wind from rushing up the sleeves, and they're merino also, so good temperature regulation. Machine washable. Almost new condition, just a few tangles in the cord (visible in the pic). I'd say the fabric is about a 200-260 weight, 18.5 micron unbelievably soft. Size medium with a slim-ish (but not tight) fit. Good for someone with a 40-ish chest. 2) Black North Face soft shell size large -$80 CONUS- Very lightly used (I live in LA where it is neither windy nor rainy much). Soft tricot/fleece lined softshell. North Face forever warranty. Water resistant and has some sort of windproofing membrane. Seems to be the previous model of this one based on the features and the tags (http://www.thenorthface.com/catalog/sc-gear/mens-jackets-vests/men-39-s-rdt-softshell-jacket.html?variationId=7D1variationName=ASPHALT%20GREY%20HEATHER) This one is slightly looser than the hoody, could easily fit the same person (both fit me), but more room for layering underneath or would work for up to a 42 chest. 3) Gray/Black REI windproof fleece vest size medium - $30 CONUS- Great shape, seen a little more usage than the other two. Slim, but not tight, and definitely room to layer underneath. Soft fleece inner, top (black portion) has a softshell-y material to resist abrasion from a pack. Windproofing membrane. Packs pretty small. Perfect for throwing in the pack and saving for that one long descent where the wind cuts through your other gear or for when the weather takes a turn for the worse. REI spectacular forever warranty. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. When it was first introduced, it did seem like the Hunq was a replacement for the Atlantis (and that the Atlantis was going away). Re: [RBW] Re: Is the Hunqapillar an updated Atlantis or a budget version of the Bombadil?
That's exactly how I remember it. But I'll add this: at the new BBH store in Walnut Creek, they have sample models in there of the Hunq, the Sam, the Betty, and the Roadeo. They have little placards saying what each is for. On the Hunq's placard, the Hunq is referred to as our mountain bike or if not that exact wording, something equivalent in meaning. -Jim W. Re: [RBW] Re: Speaking of Off-Pavent Rides... Come to Redlands this Spring!
Figured I'd chime in. There is Burbank Airport. It's a 15 to 20 minute easy drive from my house. I could pick you up depending on your arrival date and time. Say you flew in on a Friday you can hang your hat overnight at our home then we can drive out the next morning really early or I could pick you up and we drive out late Friday(large amount of commuter traffic going East) camp at David's ( hey David you did make that offer months ago) and be up for the ride early Saturday morning. ~Hugh Life is like riding a bicycle. [RBW] Re: Riv e-bike conversion?
*Joe, how does the throttle work on the Hilltopper? With rear wheel e-bikes, power is matched to pedal effort. But with front wheel e-bikes, it would seem that no such linkage exists. * *Dave* On Saturday, January 11, 2014 10:18:17 PM UTC-6, Joe Bernard wrote: I can see cyclists having qualms about e-bikes operated with a throttle like a motorcycle, but the pedal-assist variety is very nice. I recently picked up a no-name (read, Chinese) electric-assist folder off Craigslist just to see what it's all about, and I love it. I live at the top of a monster hill, and there are days I just don't want to end a ride on that thing under my own (meager) power. The electric makes it possible to still get a decent ride in, but on an artificially flattened terrain. One option you may want to look at is a Hilltopper replacement front wheel if you have a 700 or 26-inch-wheel Riv. It's a relatively low cost (and power) fully reversible application http://www.electric-bike-kit.com/hill-topper.aspx. It does exactly what the name implies: A little boost over the hill. [RBW] SoCal S240 a Month Club
Okay were already into mid January and I know I need to get one in before the end of the month. I've polled the usual suspects and it appears that the 24th 25th is going to be the best time. So here's the plan: Take the Metrolink train to the Vincent Grade Acton station and ride out and up Angeles Forest Springs Rd to Mill Creek Summit. I will need to make a call to the ranger district and inquiry about water at the Summit. From MCS continue on and up Mount Gleason Road skirting the flank of Mount Gleason (we can stash our bikes and hike the 600' to the summit) and make a stealth camp either around Lighting Point or Messenger Flats camps. Mike S. said that MF's was closed but I'm into stealthing it anyhow. This is approximately a 2500' to 3000' climb all pavement for about 25 miles +- 2 miles. Doug P. and I did this ride last May and this is a pleasant ride. Following day will be the long mileage day approximately 35 miles back down Santa Clara Divide Rd(broken pavement rough stuff so this is where you'll want ideally 42 mm tires with a good casing I'll be running Rumpkins) to Sand Canyon Bear Divide climb up to Dillon Divide and Little Tujunga Rd back down to Foothill. There's a Restaurant at the intersection, so I'll check the schedule and post the menu a bit later hoping for beer too. For any out of town Riv folk like the San Diego contingent this will need to be determined. The early train gets to Acton at 8:10 am though that's pretty early it would be ideal due to short days. Suggestions as usual are welcome. Everyone is responsible for their meals. We'll of course do a weather check and make a call for the 31st if we have a freak Chinook but I'm confident that'll it'll be a go. ~Hugh -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
