As a crank arm loosens off its tapered steel bottom bracket axle, the wiggle room allows the square taper hole to become misshapen. This happens over very little time as the crank arm is made of softer aluminum that the harder steel bottom bracket spindle. Depending on how long you have ridden with it loose, typically determines how misshapen the hole becomes. Tony, if the arm was loose only for your ride I wouldn't worry about it but if it was loose for a week, but you only noticed it that morning, there could be a problem. The only way to know is tighten the crank bolt and see what happens. If you tighten it and it becomes loose again, time to replace the crank arm. not exactly the venerable frames that are being discussed, but I have a '98 Moser Forma frame, lugged except for fillet-brazed seat stays, Dedaccai zero tre tubing (the top tube pings so pretty). [RBW] Your pre-80's steel vs. today's steel bikes.
Dear Michael, just changed back to skinnier, softer tubing. The reason was a very irritating neck pain, it's gone now. Had a Roberts, quite similar to a HH, now I'm with a Mercian, standard 631 tubing. This bike is a bit stiffer in the BB than my old 531 frames, it fits my 220lb 6'4 very fine, although I'm still using it on gravel roads carry groceries home, pull my kids trailer. It has a mild lowtrail geo, also works fine for me. Please have a look Wolff234.tumblr.com You see, one can have the qualities from the past in a modern frame, combined with some modern achievements I'm very happy about Best regards Gunnar. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. I'm guessing Riv leaves the stem not fully inserted so it doesn't get marred or scratched prior to shipping to the owner. That way, it's up to the owner to set the stem height. Riv probably would have done the same with the seat post, but they already know the customer's saddle-height down to the centimeter. Longboard is bolted to the bottom of the brake bridge despite having caliper brakes installed. Can't be too many threads, I wouldn't think. I guess the serrated washers help get it right. [RBW] FS: Complete Cockpit, Old Brooks c
So I switched my Quickbeam from drops to Alba's and now have it's old cockpit available along with a few other items. List follows: * Complete cockpit: - Soma Brevet Bahttp://www.somafab.com/archives/product/brevet-randonneur-bar-round-bendr, 46cm width, - Nitto Technomic 26.0 110mm 72d Silver 225mm 1 Quill Stem - Cane Creek SCR-5C Compact Road Brake Levers - Nitto Silver Bar Plugs - Wrapped in Newbaums green tape, twinned and shellacked. However for some reason - perhaps tying it down too tight, perhaps the numerous torrential storms I endured in my cross-country tour it broke in lopsided. The frame is fine but I have no idea how to revive the leather (if it's at all possible). So I'm selling this at fire-sale prices for anyone who wants to attempt said revival or put new leather on the frame. $25 shipped CONUS https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-dhrwV0vxnDs/U4N957ACmgI/Dpk/E4eXNwV2MTM/s1600/Brooks+Angled.jpg * Showers Pass Touring Jackethttp://www.showerspass.com/catalog/closeout/mens-touring-jacket - Yellow and Black, great rain jacket. Roomy, pit-zips hi-viz. I bought the English Riding Jacket and don't really need a second jacket. This jacket has mostly been wadded up in my Saddlesack but I'm sure I've worn it a good dozen times. Good backup when it's really cold and certainly does it's job of keeping the rain off. $35 shipped CONUS * Large Splats http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/ar3.htm B Shoe size 7-9 - I'm a big fan of splats and used the original one's until the velcro wore out. So was happy to see the new edition with the improved side strap. However the size I ordered,, 7-9, are clown-shoe-ishly large. Considering that I am a size 9 show I wouldn't have thought that would have been the case (unless Riv sent me the wrong size I suppose). Anyway I only wore these once in the rain and disliked the overly large size. So will trade them for the A size (up to 7) or $15 shipped CONUS More pictures available on request. Yes thank you, my family member(s) arrived faster than I expected, so that was good. We did have to remove the fenders and rack along with both wheels and loosen the quill to get the bike in the trunk, but it's a small price to pay to get picked up from a long way from home. They also took me back to the hotel I was at for the brevet in Italy, TX so I could gather my things, which was another 85 miles in the car. And lastly brought me back to Austin since I had carpooled up to Italy. I am indebted to them for the help, it was almost 500 miles of driving, and they had to cancel their dinner plans at the lake with friends. [RBW] Re: Square taper spindle bolt torque

Re: [RBW] One last time: 559X 32 mm Kojaks versus 559X 32 mm Primo Racers versus others?
Thanks again for the replies. After much soul searching, anxiety, and general fretting I have decided to stay with Kojaks, because, if they are not entirely excellent as fast tires, they do fall into the category technically known as *pretty darn good*. If 28 mm wide was sufficient, I'd probably buy some Michelin WildRunr tires, but, beside the sickening name, 28 mm is just too narrow (never thought I'd say that) for this particular bike (which carries heavy rear loads and pounds over 3-6 wide pavement cracks (which are due, so I read, from the asphalt shifting in our sandy soil, not to our high desert temperature extremes). I meant to add that, from the reports, of all the Kojak alternatives, only the Michelin seems truly promising as a tire faster than the Kojaks and, again, they are too narrow. Andrew, Yes it's on for the 12th. At this point I only know that there is a PDX contingent planning on coming down. How many I have no idea? I know Manny plans on being around And I plan on being there. It'd be nice to see some of the local's planning/itinerary. I've heard various ideas tossed out but nothing firm. There was a ride around Tam and then on another day a ride up Diablo with a stop by RivHQ? Or perhaps we'll keep it simple and a bunch of Rivendell's descend on China Camp and we wing it. Personally, I'd love to camp at Sam Taylor or something similar. Or do the Shell Ridge camp. I assume if there were lot's of us that Shell Ridge wouldn't work. [RBW] Re: Habitual rides, riding habits
These days I ride up to 15 miles or so in spring and fall, 20-35 miles in the heat and humidity of summer, which I feel the best in. Sometimes just a few miles, and sometimes I've just turned around a block from home when it didn't feel right. . Give me the heat though ! In the cold I wilt , hence I do not ride in winter . Taking time away from the bike completely is quite refreshing . Like this year I decided no more Birkenstocks , and ride in nice soft Crocs, which I wear around the house and love 'em. Last year in the middle of summer I tried, but having ridden NBirks for so long it just felt too weird. So after a winter of not even thinking of a bike, hopping on with Crocs was easy, a little awkward at first being that I pedal mid foot and Crocs are like very soft and flexible. But it felt Great ! So I continued and now I fell better than I ever have in my life of using rigid shoes and Birks. Yep, time away from the bike is wondrous. My pace, 14-15 mph or so I suspect by the distance I see on google maps and the time I spend. I don't have any onboard mileage thingy , no distractions ! I stop whenever I want, wherever I want , sometimes just to walk with the bike and listen to all the wildlife and wind . Yes, sometimes a bike is just too fast and noisy. I too wear nylon shorts, Ex Offico's . Bamboo and cotton shirts, 70/30 . I finally found my release from polyester, and I don't like wool either and I wanted a real v-neck, not a tight fitting tiny V like Icebreaker . They're like 11 dollars from Amazon, blissfully soft and they're V-necks(or crews) ! yeah ! I also wear some Modal(wood pulp fiber also) shirts too. I could sleep in what I wear cycling :) Most of all, enjoy the ride, no matter how far or short. I like your philosophy (except for not riding in winter). Riding must above all else be fun, otherwise, to hell with it. Can you post link or links to those bamboo/cotton and Modal shirts? I know that in high summer, I say aero be damned and wear rayon (= wood fiber) Hawaiian shirts, which are cool, antiseptic, comfortable, air-circulation-promoting, and cheap-iss-imus at Goodwill: sub $5. But knit rayon that is not quite as billowy might be even better. Thanks for the invite, but with my schedule, the demands on my attention and time (91 year old mother, just-about-13-year-old daughter), and my balance of payments deficit, it is highly unlikely that I'll be able to make the trip. I would, though, had I sufficient $ and time, you can believe that. 7/12 will be in the midst of our annual summer family gathering, too -- though I wouldn't put it past me to skip and go west ... [RBW] Tamarancho hurtfest/ Mission Peak s240
Had a free Saturday. So checked out Tamarancho with downhill buddy, Judd, to see what all the hubbub was about the Flow Trail. Pretty much lived up to the expectation and more. After falling twice, once trying to clip in over a bridge now called Judd's Bridge, the other fall off a cliff trying to maneuver over rockage. Judd seemed to finally find his grove until. Trying to ride some extra credit bermage he ends up endoing right into an all rigid carbon mountain biker. Like seriously plowed this guy into a bush off the trail. I'm a horrible person because I seriously wanted to laugh at the ridiculous scene. Finally got to the flow trail. Pretty much an adult downhill BMX course. After riding it twice we finally figured out to ride it. Just don't brake. Lesson learn. Plow through folks because you don't break. Finally got to do a Mission Peak Overnight. After working a long day of pedicab figure best thing you can do it go bike up a mountain. Big group again. Tommy, Tom B, Kurt, Puck, Brendan, Pat Mr.Wornthreads, and new overnight folks Dav on his commuter road bike and Brax on his newly front racked Huniqipillar. Left late and rode to the campgrounds in pitch darkness. Super unprepared and ended up not bring enough food or water. Luckily I have friends that don't mind sharing. The next morning we woke up to a beautiful sunrise and loose singletrack. Pretty mellow ride. Hardest thing about this ride was the BART ride home. Nothing watermelon can fix. Fun times all around. Still don't know why people keep coming to these rides. I'm just glad folks are nice enough to come with extra food and willing to put up with riding with me.
