Welcome, John! Deb is great. I love my Rivets. I'm just up the hill from Colorado Springs, in Green Mountain Falls. Are you still in CS? If you'd even like to ride, let me know. I do mostly remote dirt roads and single track. You can see my photos here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/32311885@N07/ (check out the albums to see various rides/trips). Because of my brain injury, I should warn you, there is a clean room protocol to get de-scented as laundry scents and all other human made scents explode in my brain. But if you're daft enough to be willing to try, I'm game. I ride a Hunqapillar for the single track/bikepacking and anytime I want gears, and a Quickbeam for the dirt roads and any time I want single track single speed. I have both an early Kindle and a Fire. For book reading, another one of the chorus of it's great. Especially in the sun. For anything else, not so much. It can be used to get books off Gutenberg or any of the other free book sites. They format does not always stay the same, but it does work. [RBW] Re: Entmoot and Mason Hill Kettles
For my bike coffee kit so far I've stuck with my old tall 1 qt aluminum kettle that came in my scout camp cook set. It's light, fits the alcohol stove inside it and is easy to handle. It doesn't allow for the most precise pour off course but I've been ok with that. I don't notice a significant taste difference in my pour over... At home I'm using the Hario s-bend kettle, it seems to me that it takes a bit longer to boil then other kettles but the craftsmanship is excellent and the ability to make the slow, precise pour for pour over coffee is very good. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Somewhat OT: Advice about basic Kindle versus Kindle Fire
I own a current Kindle touch and previously owned the preceding version of the Kindle touch (it drowned). If you utilize the built-in light very much, it will significantly lower your battery life. The previous (non-light) version was kept in a case that had a built-in light that was powered by the Kindle's battery and even using that light, the battery would last for a long time. The new Kindle's built-in light seems to draw a lot more power that the light my old Kindle powered. I couldn't put a time-frame on it but I easily charge this one twice as often as the previous one. If you can train yourself to keep the light as low as possible you can extend battery life but I find that I've been spoiled and tend to keep it at a fairly bright level. Still, I highly recommend the Kindle Touch. One of the best purchases I've ever made. On Saturday, August 2, 2014 1:19:31 PM UTC-5, Patrick Moore wrote: I have more and more books on the Kindle system and I'm seriously thinking of getting a small screen device on which to read them -- in between my iPhone 4 and my 17 Macbook Pro. Will the basic Kindle download and display books from The Gutenberg Project and other such sites? (I don't order from Apple, so it needn't handle their products.) 2. Can one read and send gmail on the basic Kindle? 3. How long in reality does the battery hold a charge on average with daily use of, say 3 hours? I'll welcome other practical comments. [RBW] quick ship, soma GR tires
I was amazed at how fast my order from RBW arrived last week, with zero shipping charge to boot. I ordered late (well past COB) tues. and my package arrived while I was at work on thurs. Granted I live only a few towns away from them, but I still think that is remarkable. Well done RBW. A pair of Soma Grand Randonneur Green tires were in the box. Mounted on Synergy rims with ~45 psi they measured ~39mm when I mounted them, and ~41 the next day. Thats with my non digital english caliper and my aging eyes so YMMV. With my silver side pull brakes all the way open, and my current state of wear on the pads, the tires fit through inflated (just barely on one end). I have only done one ride on them. I started with 35/45psi (front/rear). They seemed to be a bit more squirmy or wandery than I prefer so I added abt 5psi part way through the ride, which seemed to fix that. The bike and I probably weigh in at about 180 to 190lbs. Compared to the GB Cypres (32mm) tires I have been using (@ ~55/65psi) the GB seems a bit cushier. Perhaps on worse surfaces the difference would be more noticeable, but yesterday the difference did not bowl me over. The bikes handling with the GRs is a bit less responsive, or more stable, than with the Cypres. Could be due to larger contact patch, or increased trail, or iduno. The Soma GR are also more audible than the GB Cypres. Oh and they do look BIG to my unaccustomed eyes. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: quick ship, soma GR tires
Thanks for the ride report. Sounds like they are pretty good and maybe a good puncture proof fast roller alternative if one is looking for something similar to a Hetre but puncture protected. Update us after a while and let us know how they do. Do they feel as fast as the Cypres? I am amazed that you can get them through your brakes without deflating. By SILVER do you mean RBW SILVER, or Tektro 559? The reason I ask is because I have never been able to drop any 50psi 40-42mm tire through my R559's, without deflating. And I set up the brake pads far from the rim and I do open the QR. So that is a luxury to get them out so easily. Very cool. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] looking for opinions on the Rivendell Roadeo
It's quite a bit lighter feeling than my Sam Hillborne, but I have that setup to be fairly rugged and has bags/racks. I originally had a lighter weight saddle on the Roadeo but I switched it out for the Brooks. I just like brooks B17s more than any other saddle that I've triedthe extra weight isn't a big deal at all. I could frankly stand to loose some off the gut instead of the bike. I'm surprisingly happy about the Rolf wheels. You could fit a Mac truck through the spokes but they have held up really well...look cool too. I've been thinking of getting some Rich built wheels and switching the Rolfs to another project bike, but they have been rolling strong so I'm in no rush. It's a really nicely designed and built frame; if you put the spurs to it, it gets up and moves. But, I can also ride it slowly with the wife and be a lot more comfortable on it than the Madone I used to have. [RBW] Re: Get them while they're hot
Many have lamented selling a Rivendell, or dithering when a particular model was being phased out. I've yet to see a post by anyone claiming glad I sold that bike when I did. Past performance is no guarantee of future results but if you want a Hillborne, now's the time. The risk is whether the new bike will stir the soul as strongly. [RBW] Re: looking for opinions on the Rivendell Roadeo
Hello Dick: Mine is a 61. Weight 22.75, with Selle AnAtomica Clydesdale seat, Look Keo pedals, two King bottle cages. I weigh over 200 lbs so I don't worry much about bike weight, and did not build up this bike with the intention of making it light. It's one of my favorite bikes for hill climb - have done many rides of 4k - 10k climbing on this bike. It is very stable, very easy to ride, descends like a solid dream, rides no hands very easily. I ride no hands a lot, sometimes for a mile or more, so I can sit up and stretch my back and neck. All the Rivendell road bikes ride no hands easily. This bike is well designed, well made, and a lot of fun. Pics here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/41563482@N06/sets/72157625470080748/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/41563482@N06/sets/72157641926758965/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/41563482@N06/sets/72157625377490164/ As far as descents go, I don't push it too fast, but I do occasionally go bombing down steep, twisty roads with bad pavement, many potholes, etc. I use the fat Schwalbe tires (35 mm kojaks, which measure out to an actual 32 or so) and they are perfect for this bike. Fat, cushy, grippy, not too heavy. Good luck, Max B On Saturday, August 2, 2014 12:57:39 PM UTC-7, dicktill wrote: As the subject says, I'm looking for opinions on the Rivendell Roadeo. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. For me, with brain injury and sensitivity to noise and scents, I try and avoid ATV’s and their ilk. I failed to do this heading in (it’s a popular ATV road to the trail head). Fortunately it was still early enough that it was lightish traffic and I made unmotorized single track fairly quickly. The climb up to the tundra was wonderful and the time on the tundra was stunning. Rain, fog, sleet, hail, with accidental storms of sunshine was the weather. When you have stunning, epic views, these weather system make for amazing beauty. Wow. Lots of LCG (lowest common gear). If the trail went up, it didn’t mess around it went UP. [RBW] The Rivendell Bike Weight Thread
Since there has been curiosity about peoples' complete bikes' and/or frames' weights, I figured it would be fun to reveal how much our Rivbikes weigh. Would be informative to know: 1. Model 2. Framesize 3. Weight of complete build, or your frameset. (Including fenders/bottlecages/racks/lights/bells is ok since dismantle-ization would be unfair to expect of a complete build. But no bags/bottles on board, please). 4. Build list, if you feel up to all that typing. Would be fun to see what everyone is hanging on their Rivs anyway. But that is a lot to ask and not expected. I would start, but I have to go home and weight the bikes first. So I will try to report back soon with my Sam and Bleriot weights. And if you guys feel strongly about this being inappropriate for Riv-culture, please delete the thread, but don't run me outta the forum on a rail. This is all intended in good fun and info-purposes. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: quick ship, soma GR tires
The GR tires I got were the GRREN version. I don't think there is any puncture protection, and I doubt they are any less susceptible to flatting than the Hetre EL version. For that you would want the BLUE version of the GRs, which likely has somewhat different ride characteristics. As you say those are probably an excellent option for folks seeking a stouter version of a ~40mm 650b slick. The brakes are Tektro 559s. I think these are the same thing as the Silver ones. Just different labeling. As to passing the pads with the GRs inflated, I did that with the cables slack. On the rear this is easily accomplished by pulling a section of brake housing out of the top tube cable stop after releasing the qr on the brake. On the front I think running the barrel adjuster all the way down would do it for my current setup. I am contemplating putting a center pull on the front, thinking releasing the straddle wire would open the brake up more than the side pull's qr does. Another option would be brake levers with a qr built in which should about double the cable release. Regarding speed with respect to the Cypres, when I was first rolling around the block to make sure nothing was amiss, and then heading out to ride, I thought the GRs were just a tad more effort in a given gear. That may well have been either in my head or just the slightly taller effective gear. I guestimate my typically used gears for that sort of thing are an inch taller with the GRs. Certainly I found keeping pace with the group I was with no more demanding than on any other occasion. I suspect the rolling resistance of the GRs is close to that of the Cypres. I think careful controlled measurements would be required to determine which was less and by how much. On Sunday, August 3, 2014 9:46:35 AM UTC-7, lungimsam wrote: Thanks for the ride report. Re: [RBW] Re: The Rivendell Bike Weight Thread
20 lb eh? I weighed my 68 cm Bomba with racks and lock but no bags recently when I was considering boxing it up to ship to myself. SON dyno front hub, Phil Wood rear, 60 mm Big Apples, Berthoud SS fenders. It was 18 kg and change. I put an Ursus Jumbo kickstand on today, so I'm thinking I might have tipped 20 kg... If I go past a public weighbridge anytime soon I'll weigh in and report back! Heavy-ass bike yes, but I don't think there's one single component I would want to remove. [RBW] Paul Thumbies or IRD stem mounted shifters?
Hi Mike, I use a right hand thumbie on my Rambouillet with a silver shifter and on my LHT / Bionx with a DA shifter. Rear levers are on the DT (Rambouillet) and bar end (LHT). Both bikes have Nitto Noodle handlebars and interruptor brake levers. I think the key to installation is using a 90 degree noodle to quickly route the cable housing towards the down tube. In my experience, they are terrific in city riding between stop signs and traffic lights when I spend most of my time on the bar tops or hooks. I don't find them nearly as convenient to shift on open road, having to reach from the hoods to bar tops, but of course then I don't shift as much. [RBW] Re: Somewhat OT: Advice about basic Kindle versus Kindle Fire
I have a Kindle Paperwhite that I carry on overnights. A Kindle e-reader is an ideal device, quite possibly the best, for reading novels and anything that isn't graphically intensive. Since you're already buying into Amazon's ecosystem, it makes even more sense for you. The battery does realistically last for weeks rather than hours or days. I like that the lighting system can be turned down very low so as not to adversely affect my night vision and allow me to read without any other source of light (great for overnights). As for Gmail, I recommend handling your email on your smartphone. That said, the touch keyboard on the Paperwhite is usable. In addition to the backlight, the touch keyboard gives the Paperwhite a clear advantage over the base Kindle model. On Saturday, August 2, 2014 11:19:31 AM UTC-7, Patrick Moore wrote: I have more and more books on the Kindle system and I'm seriously thinking of getting a small screen device on which to read them -- in between my iPhone 4 and my 17 Macbook Pro. I'm inclined toward the basic Kindle at $70 since I want it very largely for reading and because it is light (and cheap). But a couple of questions for those of you who have used such things. 1. Hi Mike, Mounted mine on Sam Hilborne today. I can place a ruler across the top horizontal bar and post a photo if that would help you. My olive bags arrive Tuesday. I can shutterbug that as well. I was somewhat bemused that the right rack came in a bag package boldly labeled LEFT and the left rack came in a bag package boldly labeled RIGHT. There is an image printed in the instructions that resolves this. What happened Nitto? I am a little put off by not having room to have the quick release lever on the axle skewer facing somewhat forward. There is just no room for it to close toward the back of the bike. My thought is that the levers should always be positioned to the read to avoid being opened by an encounter with something. Nice set of NBW with the rack, including a hefty spacer washer for the upper attachment. Beautiful Oregon was great. With it's green grass and rain. Good to be back in good old dry California. Maybe him being able to muscle up climbs. Evan let me try these new 650b Cazadero after riding them for about a month or so I like them. Perfect for the type of riding I like doing. Good solid tire; great grip on loose dirt and gravel. Surprisingly fast still on the road. Haven't figured out the tire pressure because of the of my load capacities. So far great for any type of dirt riding around in the Bay Area. If it rained maybe I could give some type of mud riding. Brother says tires are fun. I guess that's all that matter. [RBW] Re: Paul Thumbies or IRD stem mounted shifters?
I love bar end shifters, but when I switched from the Noodles to the Surly Open Bar the bar ends were out of the question. They would have simply stuck out too far; too wide if you get my drift. So I went with the stem shifters. The advantages of stem shifters are (1) they make switching handlebars very simple. After the initial setup, all you have to mess with are the brakes. And, as is the case with the Noodles and the Surly handlebars, and most other swept back bars for that matter, they required different brake levers and a different stem. So I left the Noodle's stem, levers, cables and tape in place and hung them on a wall. If I want to switch back to the Noodles, I can do so in no more than 30 minutes. It's a lift-n-lay process. All I have to adjust is the brakes! (2) People associate stem shifters with cheap bikes. This is like cheap insurance. Thieves just might skip over my Hillborne for something more fancy. Just about everyone I meet out on the road/trail thinks my bike is old and outdated. The last guy I talked to didn't even know bikes were still available in steel. And I'm sure the DTT looks like a 3rd World rice hauler. I like being perceived as the underdog. I'm sure there are other advantages, but I will acknowledge stem shifters take a little getting used to since you have to remove one hand from the handlebar to shift. Stem shifters are not for everybody, but they sure are convenient if you like different handlebar configurations.
