[RBW] Re: Packing SS-coupled Riv - Tips, Tools Gears to make it easier?

2014-09-10 Thread 'pb' via RBW Owners Bunch
61 seat tube and 28cm steerer tube here. I do not need to remove my fork,
but looking at various folks' packing methods online, it becomes clear that
there are lots of ways to do this job. This is the best sequence I have
found to date: http://sandsmachine.com/pack_r3.htm . I think it's easier
and better than the old Sands guide that was colored red and blue. As
suggested, print it, and keep it in the case.

Other folks have responded re the stem; my only concern would be if it's an
extra-long quill, a la some Rivvers, that may further complicate things.
Dunno. IMO, no reason not to think about a quill adapter and an
ahead-style stem. I pull my bars from my threadless stem, and leave the
stem on the steerer, turned 90 degrees. If it's a standard length quill,
I'd anticipate it working fine.

Contrary to Michael, I like the cable splitters in a spot where I can reach
them from the drive side when the bike is in the a workstand, without
interference from the chainrings. So not down by the coupling. If you do
mount them down by the coupling, do not mount them right on top of the
couplings, as they will rattle against the couplings when you are riding.

I pull my cranks. Fast and easy and it allows more flexibility. I keep a
padded mailing envelope in the case for the driveside crank. I pull my
chain and carefully snap the quick links back into place for storage.
(Also ... carry a couple of spare quick links in your seat bag, Just do
it. Cheap insurance. I have needed one once, and I have given one to a
fellow rider once. Useful.) I drop the rear der but I don't remove it
from its cable. I pull the front brake and bag it. Like another poster, I
keep a stash of heavy-duty freezer zip-locs in my case.

If your cog set is very large (wide range), it may want to collide with
either the seat tube or the down tube. I used to pull my cassette, but
with the above-referenced sequence I do not need to pull a 13-29 cassette.
I still put a strong pad between the cassette and the adjacent tube.
Experiment. With a huge cogset I don't know, it might prove worthwhile
to pull the freewheel/cassette.

I have some nice-quality long allens with ball drivers on the long end.
They are a pleasure to use, and much faster than small allens or a combo
tool. I carry 4-5-6-8. My pedals are all 6 or 8 allens. Then, of course,
I have the SS spanner. With my crank puller, those are all the tools I
need for assembly/disassembly.

Toss a couple of clean-ish rags in the case, and a small bottle of
lube.  Lennard Zinn uses dishwashing gloves for assembly/disassembly;
sometimes I have my act together enough to have some latex or nitrile
gloves along.

Make sure that all your cable stops are slotted so that you can pop the
cables in and out. This is a little detail that not all SS framebuilders
know about. If you have indexed shifting with adjusters on the DT, then
the adjusters need to also be slotted to match, so the cables can slip out
of them. It is IMO a PITA to not be able to disengage the bars from the
frame, not impossible to deal with, just not as clean or easy as being able
to hold the bars in your hand and tuck the cable stubs neatly around the
perimeter of the box without having them trapped in the downtube guides.
Ask me how I learned these things.

Source a front wheel packing cap from your LBS. This is a flat little hat
with a little perpendicular thing sticking out, and the little
perpendicular thingie slips into the front axle, and then the hat pads the
end of the axle. The front axle tends to push against the case and create
a permanent bulge. Maybe my case spacers need to be a tad longer to
prevent that.

I have assumed that you are going to protect your frame tubes with
something. I have some nice custom sleeves that came with one of my
bikes. What they don't give you is some slip-on padding for your brake
levers. They can rub on the side of the case, and get pretty scratched. I
usually just use pipe insulation.

Weigh your packed bike and make sure you aren't overweight, which is, if I
recall, fifty pounds. One time I crammed to much stuff in with the bike,
and I had to move things to my carry on in the middle of the check-in area,
which meant that I then had to explain to TSA what each bike tool was. Buy
a heavy luggage strap and put it around the case to back up the
latches. The latches on SS cases are made of pot metal, and it's possible
to break them. I have done it.

I've gotten petty good at packing, but I haven't gotten fast. I think I
did it in 40 minutes once, on the sidewalk in front of the airport, but I
didn't enjoy it. I usually take my time, and take an hour.

Lynn were you and your Sweetpea at the Oregon Bicycle Ride in August?

Here's one of my SS bikes:

RE: [RBW] Re: German Mirror ???

I have one on my Quickbeam with Noodles, Atlantis with Albas, and Mystery Bike

 (QB bike)

Love them with all three bars. I miss the mirror when I’m riding one of my
bikes without one, and I rely on them frequently as a backup view to the rear
(backup to sound and a quick turn to look). Sometimes the plastic bolt that
keeps the ball joint near the mirror comes out (don’t know why), but they can
be replaced with a standard (6mm, I think) Allen bolt. Apart from that,
they’re quite rugged; as you can see in one of the MB pics, I often lean the
bike against the mirror, and they stay adjusted and hold the bike up without
any other contact.

I like mine: https://flic.kr/p/jwysaa
I use it on my commuting bike. The coverage is good enough and the mirror is
rugged. I park the bike behind the door in my classroom and on the porch of my
house where the mirror receives constant bumping. The bike has also fallen
over more times than I care to admit, and the mirror survives. I have not
experienced the issues Michael has, but I haven't readjusted the clamp to bar
fitting much. Based on its design, I can see where it might not take too much
adjusting. I have the tension on the mirror to arm connection such that I can
adjust the angle of the mirror with a firm hand; this allows me to adjust it as
I ride should it have gotten smacked too hard by an opening door. I have it
mounted on Albatross bars.
Overall a stout mirror that allows me to track overtaking cars.
All the best,
Erl

[RBW] Craigslist sighting: FS 56 Atlantis in St. Paul MN

2014-09-10 Thread Tim Gavin
*Not mine, no relation to the seller*

http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/dak/bik/4658352875.html

I've been tempted by this all morning, but it's two sizes too small for me
and two sizes too big for my girlfriend. So, I'll share it with the list.

An early production (Toyo), 56 cm Rivendell Atlantis. It looks like it
lacks the mid-fork braze-ons of more recent Atlantii. Complete build with
Brooks, Nitto, XT, etc., for $1350! Somebody will get a great deal!

Buy it, and bring it to the MN country bike rally at the end of the month!

Cheers,
Tim

[RBW] What is up with Brooks QC?

2014-09-10 Thread lungimsam
Seems like most of the time I have ordered saddles, I get saddles shipped
to me that have inconsistencies - Rivets out of alignment, one spring a
little taller than the other with spring loops spread wider than the other,
top rails off center relative to bottom rails, nose leather crooked, nose
has a curve to it, adjustment bolt crooked.

I kept one with a slightly crooked nose so as to not put out the vender
with a return, and it has been comfortable.

Are these things normal because they are hand made saddles, or are they
defects?

I use very reputable dealers. I know I can return a saddle for exchange,
but I feel like I'd have to exchange a few to finally get one sent to me
that has everything in alignment.
Am I crazy, or do you all have the same probs with Brooks these days?

[RBW] Re: What is up with Brooks QC?

2014-09-10 Thread Anton Tutter
Most of the 4-5 Brooks saddle's I've bought new in the past five years have
had some sort of anomaly or inconsistency in manufacture (some of which
like you mentioned), but none bad enough to warrant returning it. The
biggest issue I have with them is the poor leather quality-- thinner than
on vintage Brooks. They've held up so far, but based on the rate of wear, I
wouldn't say these are going to last nearly as long as some of the vintage
ones I've found. The used ones that I've found that date back to the 1970s
and 80s seem to have thicker leather and give me the impression they'll
last decades more...

 Cheers,
 Tim

The previous two responders have 650B bikes, while your 57 Hilsen is a 700c

did have it installed on a 700c bike, a 56cm Hillborne.

One thought is that you have a Hilsen and therefore have a Mark's Rack.
Maybe you have your Mark's rack installed higher than it needs to be,
requiring longer struts. Can you share a photo?

Re: [RBW] Re: What is up with Brooks QC?

2014-09-10 Thread Anton Tutter
Correct. I have a Berthoud saddle... way sturdier leather than Brooks.
It's possible the higher-end Brooks models get the thicker, choice
leather, but I wouldn't know as all of my newer Brooks are the lower end
models (B17 regular, B67 sprung, etc).

thinner than on vintage Brooks. They've held up so far, but based on
the rate of wear, I wouldn't say these are going to last nearly as
long as some of the vintage ones I've found. The used ones that I've
found that date back to the 1970s and 80s seem to have thicker leather
and give me the impression they'll last decades more...

And it's not like that quality leather isn't out there: Gilles Berthoud
seems to have no trouble finding it for his saddles.

[RBW] Rusty Tektro R559 sidepull spring - replace?

2014-09-10 Thread lungimsam
My rear brake spring is getting surface rust after only being ridden in the
rain a handful of times. Front brake is fine.
Do I need to replace, or is surface rust not an indicator of more rust
leading to failure any time soon?
Anyone know where I can get the springs?

I guess I'll have to stay on lubing it after rain rides.
My rear brake allen bolt is all rusty too now.
I use fenders and a saddle bag, so I don't know how water is getting there.

[RBW] Berthoud Fenders on Saluki/AHH

2014-09-10 Thread Tony DeFilippo
After riding a bike with these stainless beauties and given that I have some
time to 're-imagine' my Saluki I've got two fender questions for the group;

1. Anyone mounted the 50mm Berthoud fenders (650b) on a saluki/ahh using 42mm
tires, any issues with clearance at the stays or unacceptable clearance for the
tire, or other install notes/thoughts?

2. Anyone had their Berthoud fenders powdercoated/painted? If so did you coat
the fender stays as well. Thoughts or opinions on coated/painted to match
fenders vs shiny metal finish?

Thanks!

Tony

[RBW] Re: Berthoud Fenders on Saluki/AHH

2014-09-10 Thread Bill Lindsay
I don't know how helpful I will be, but I have a comment on each.

1. I tried Honjos on my 650B Hilsen (2010), and was not satisfied with
clearance around Hetres. I returned to SKS plastics, and then decided
clearances were even better with Lierres, which are tremendous tires. When
I wear through a pile of Lierres I'll try the 38mm Compass offering. I
only run 42s on my Hilsen when the fenders are off. I like having a full
10mm on top and 5mm on each side with fenders. I couldn't get the 10mm on
top, so I wasn't satisfied. I might be too demanding.

2. I haven't had stainless powdercoated, but I did pinstripe them!
Contact me offlist if you like and I'll point you to my flickr album when
I get home

[RBW] Charlottesville peeps

2014-09-10 Thread Allan in Portland
Greetings Charlottesville denizens past and present,

I have a short-term contract job in Charlottesville, VA. At least through
the end of the year and possibly (hopefully?) into March. Unlikely I'll be
bringing my Hilsen, but I am wondering what the cycling scene is like. Are
there many bike commuters? Is it worth bringing a bike for late fall and
winter? I'm borrowing my brother's truck (from Indiana) while I'm there and
could likely grab one of his bikes as well. I'll be working at GE, which is
north of town by about 10 miles.

On an O/T long-shot: anyone in Charlottesville in need of a house-sitter or
short-term roommate? Or know someone who does? :)

Cheers,
-Allan

It's possible a more skilled workman than me could have devised a way to

I think you could lower that rack by using the two-strut-to-one-eyelet method

Hard to say without measurements for sure, though.

Maybe you have your Mark's rack installed higher than it needs to be,
requiring longer struts. Can you share a photo?

Re: [RBW] Re: platrack mounting question

2014-09-10 Thread Dave
Good idea, and without the platrack attachment I think I'd do just that.
The platrack uses the 2nd set of mark's rack eyelets to attach itself, and
the nitto rack bolts aren't long enough to use in that situation

Get rid of the diving board.

Hard to say without measurements for sure, though.

2014-09-10 Thread RJM
I can't complain about my b17 special and my select model, but my basic
black standard brooks b17 didn't hold up as well as they are. The leather
is noticeably thicker on the special and select and I haven't come across
any squeaking or need to adjust the bolt like I have on the standard.
Still, I ride the standard fine, but the leather is thinner.

An alternative to brooks that I have been recently made aware of is Spa
Cycles saddles. http://www.spacycles.co.uk/products.php?plid=m2b0s204p0 I
have been told that the leather and quality of construction is first rate.
I don't have personal experience with them though.

I've fit those Berthoud 50's, the ones Mike Kone sells @ Rene Herse online

That is true. Used to the 2nd set of struts going to the fork crown so I don't
think about it much - just something to do when mounting the platrack.

I keep a second set of bolts for platrack use. They need to be 4mm - ish longer
than the ones for the Mark's rack struts.

Re: [RBW] Berthoud Fenders on Saluki/AHH

2014-09-10 Thread JL
When I had my Saluki, an early cantilever one, I used Berthoud 60mm stainless
fenders. The 50mm model did not offer enough clearance on the sides of the
Hetres for my tastes. Perhaps a bike with more vertical clearance can work
with the 50mm fenders easier. Others have used them but I much prefer a
flatter, wider fender profile. The fenders are often sold as 26x60mm. They work
over 42-45mm 650b fenders with no hassle. Keep in mind that you will need to
trim the fork crown daruma to clear the tire.

That looks very wrong. The tombstone should be parallel to your headtube,

That's the kind of thing I am talking about.
I don't know if those things are considered defects, or just part of the

I mean, as long as the saddle rides great, then no big deal, if that's par
for the course for hand made. But I don't want trouble down the road for
accepting something that may be defective.
