At risk of veering off topic, I wish some clever producer would figure out a Speedial variable leverage setup for road levers. There's so much variation in brake MA, hand strength, and just personal preference, I think it'd be a killer product. Even moreso now with road discs that could generally use more lever pull. [RBW] Re: Downsizing and emotionally paralyzed...
Definitely tough choices... it looks like each either had or still has special meaning that led you to have them in the first place but I get wanting to keep it at 2. Seems like you've already gotten to the conclusion that the Atlantis is the #1 keeper, and Will's point about the two forks is a great one. I still pine a bit for the 64cm Atlantis that was way to big for me... they do have some 'magic'. If it were me, and I was making the decision right now... I'd probably put all three others up for sale and see what the response is with a slight preference towards keeping the Foy as it is a clearly different bike and could be a longterm keeper (and isn't available anymore). The Hilsen should fetch a good price and the Hunq w/ a low trail fork would intrigue alot of people. Your can then cherry pick the best racks and accesories from the two that sell to make sure your Atlantis can be converted into any of its infinite incarnations. On an unrelated note I'd love to hear your thoughts on the Pocket Lama in comparison to your full size bikes. I travel a bit for work and have been back and forth on whether a BF is a worthy investment. Feel free to hit me up off list if you want to keep this discussion on track. Good luck! Sometimes I think that since both the Atlantis and the Hunqapillar have the custom low trail forks (I still have the original ones), those are the ones I should keep. [RBW] Re: Downsizing and emotionally paralyzed...
René, I'm sorry to hear of your situation. Unfortunately, I don't ride your size so I can't make a sincere offer (both bummed and relieved about that). I have to agree with the group, your Atlantis, although well-loved, is the one in the middle. The Hunq could fill in for your Santa Cruz if you set it up for trails. Seems like you have enough standover for that. It would also provide study tour and s240 ability when you wanted it. Besides, that custom silver/gray paint job is unique and stunning! As for the Homer or the Betty, that would be a dilemma. I've always loved the Hilson and would set one up for go fast-ish road riding. But, if fast-ish road riding is of no interest, then hang on to the Betty. It is unique and irreplaceable. Best of luck with such a tough decision. I hope you do well with the ones you decide to sell and continue to love and enjoy the ones you decide to keep. One to cover tour/trail/country and the other for road riding) On Friday, March 6, 2015 at 6:16:10 PM UTC-8, René wrote: Hi all, For almost a year, I've been facing the need to downsize the number of bikes that I have for a number of personal reasons. I say keep the Atlantis and the Hilsen. The Atlantis has two forks, so you've already created extra versitility. Plus there's Atlantis magic which is special. The Hilsen is so nicely set up I can't believe you'd let that go. Yes, I like the Foy, but the Hilsen is a true classic, a real heirloom bike. Changing the cables regularly is a better investment. I broke a cable once, very far from home. After that, on any bike I put a lot of miles started each season with new cables, a new chain and usually new tape and new tires. Biking is better with peace of mind. Re: [RBW] Re: Downsizing and emotionally paralyzed...
Thanks John, that's a very logical summary. And indeed, the Hunqapillar can be turned into a trail bike. I guess one way to get started would be to downsize to Hunqapillar, Homer Betty and then continue from there. Although when I look at what I'm likely to do in the next 5 years with myself, keeping the Atlantis and the Betty (or the Hunqapillar and the Betty) also looks quite sensible. René On Sat, Mar 7, 2015 at 7:19 AM, Surlyprof jmcclu...@gmail.com wrote: René, I'm sorry to hear of your situation. I may keep the Bosco Bullmoose handlebar currently on it, but have regular Bosco bars that would likely go with it, or the regular Bullmoose handlebar. Steel Berthoud 60mm fenders, brand new custom paint job, etc. 2) Atlantis 61 with low trail fork. Between the Hunqapillar and the Atlantis, I think I'm leaning to keep the Atlantis. I bought it with the idea that one of my daughters would ride it, but they didn't care to and after I tried it myself, I couldn't let them trash it. Sometimes I feel like keeping the Homer and the Atlantis, sometimes I feel like keeping the Atlantis and the Betty. Re: [RBW] Downsizing and emotionally paralyzed...
Thanks for the feedback! My son's Tallboy is the aluminum regular travel and mine is the carbon LT. They are so much fun to ride and I just love how they handle. But he isn't riding it and in the past, would only ride with me if I insisted. He'd then have a lot of fun, but never in his 16 year old life has he ever come to ask for us to go on a ride. I thought that getting him a great bike would increase the fun factor, which it did, but so far it's just not his thing. What can i do? As long as I keep both, there's always the chance that he might want to go mountain biking, but since I haven't mountain biked in about a year and a half, the odds are pretty slim. It's just that as long as I keep the bikes, there's hope. If I sell his, I might as well sell mine, although I could eventually find a group to mountain bike with, I guess. Especially as you can only fit a 40mm tire on the latter. I would say let go of the Atlantis, keeping the Homer, Hunqapillar, and Betty. If you end up not using the Homer, that would be the next one to let go. Looks like Betty is getting used? I love step-throughs, so think it's great that you have one _if you use it_. The alternative is to substitute the Atlantis for the Homer in the above calculus. Tallboy regular or LT? I have a thing for Santa Cruz bikes, even though they're not MUSA. Whether one or both stays has nothing to do with bringing the number of Riv bikes down to two. Last, I also have a Bike Friday Lama that I use when I travel for a week on business, which isn't that often now, but which I want to keep for it's flexible use and because it's as fun to ride as the Rivs. Here are my four Riv bikes; you can see images of past and present configurations on my Flickr site: https://www.flickr.com/photos/orthie251/sets/ 1) Hunqapillar 58 with low trail fork and front/rear racks. It's low trail fork only allows for a maximum tire width of 40mm, and I love how it rides. 3) Homer Hilsen 61, my very first Riv purchase and a bike I ride seldom since I'm losing the weight loss battle for now, but when I ride it, I just fall in love with all over again. 4) Betty Foy 58 with 42mm 650B red Hetre tires and steel Berthoud fenders that were an odyssey to install. I just love how this bike rides, it immediately connects me to being a child and riding, and it's the bike I envision I'd ride when I'm very old. I bought it with the idea that one of my daughters would ride it, but they didn't care to and after I tried it myself, I couldn't let them trash it. Sometimes I feel like keeping the Homer and the Atlantis, sometimes I feel like keeping the Atlantis and the Betty. Sometimes I think that since both the Atlantis and the Hunqapillar have the custom low trail forks (I still have the original ones), those are the ones I should keep. There you have it; apologies for the long post. I'm doing this mostly to build my courage to post two of them for sale and get a feel for the degree of interest in any of them. Inspired by the March challenge and some warmer weather here in Chicago, I got out for a nice indoor farmers market ride and made some coffee outside. It's been nice getting inspired to get out and ride everyday. Rode my 650b converted Shogun setup as a porteur. The Bruce Gordon Rock n Road tires ride great and fit in the conversion, but are overkill as my daily riding rarely goes off pavement (I'm selling the RnR 650b tires if anyone is interested). [RBW] Re: Help identifying Nitto Albatross Material
The aluminum model has a red circular sticker near the clamp area that reads heat treated, although perhaps that is missing from yours. The aluminum model is rather light and has a brighter finish than the chromoly which has more of a soft, satin finish. I concur with Joe B, the aluminum bar has hash marks at the clamping area, although they seem to disappear quickly if you change out the bars a few times. All of the Nitto/Rivendell albatross bars I have owned have a model number and a width designation at the end or ends of the bar. - Frank On Saturday, March 7, 2015 at 10:12:29 AM UTC-5, Kevin Abbott wrote: I have a Nitto Albatross Handlebar that I purchased quite a few years ago and I can't seem to remember if I bought the cromo or alu model. Re: [RBW] Downsizing and emotionally paralyzed...
Ha ha ha ha!!! Just when I thought I had settled on selling the Atlantis first... and keeping the Hunqapillar. I would agree that if going down to one bike that could do it all, the Atlantis would probably be it. So far, I think that the options that make the most sense are: - If keeping two, then Hunqapillar + Homer or Betty - If keeping one, then the Atlantis makes sense. I will still keep my Bike Friday Pocket Lama, steel (not lugged) and a lot of fun to ride. It could easily replace the Betty, I think, which would leave me with Hunqa + Homer + BF if I decide to go that route. Obviously, Atlantis + BF would also work very well. More thinking to do... and thanks for all your feedback and suggestions. They have helped me put things in perspective. I guess I will have to try riding the Atlantis with the Bosco bars before I make that final call... Have ridden it with all other bars except for those. Re: [RBW] Re: Custom Riv on the Blug
I doubt it. Customs start at $3,500 the last I heard, and that in Indian terms is almost RS/- 2.2 lakhs, or almost 220K Rupees. That's frame, fork, and headset. When I perused the all-India cycling discussion list, whose name I now forget after having lost all my bookmarks, many of the posters were asking what they could buy for, say, RS/-25K ... $400. OTOH, there are so many more Indians nowadays who are cross-cultural, pan-geographic, and whose finances are Western, and who import the latest Carbon Fiber, so ... Still, those who can afford to buy bikes expensive by American standards are few indeed. But here's a shot of a typical Indian with a double top tube! Re: [RBW] Re: mafac raid brake
Minor update. This morning I took a little time and got the toe in down to something approaching the amount I typically find works well on other brakes I have set up. Rode up hill and down dale after that. The raid worked just fine. Lever travel is about what I like. No squealing (except one or two modest very low speed chirps). Braking power seemed fine to me. Controlled speed and stopped the bike just fine. One caveat, I don't think I am a particularly demanding brake user. I've got no complaints about how the CR720s and R559s I have used perform. I gather some find those under powered and can't stand em, so as usual YMMV. On Saturday, March 7, 2015 at 7:53:45 AM UTC-8, A. Do you know when levers started having more mechanical advantage? Was that a Mafac versus others differentiator? My understanding is that the more modern aero levers have more mechanical advantage than the older non-aero style due to the position of the pivot in the handle and direction of cable pull. I've used both types and when set up correctly had no complaints about braking, so maybe the mechanical-advantage advantage isn't the biggest issue. Rene, tough choice and bummer. Your bikes are stunners-guess the best thing about that is however you proceed you still have two really awesome bikes. [RBW] FS 1990 Trek 520, 19 in
so i was working on this bike as an introductory touringish bike for my girlfriend... then the complete Clem prototypes went on sale and now she has a little green protovelo, and is in love. (photos of that coming soon) anyway, im looking to sell the 1990 trek 520 i was working on. USA made, lugged, pearl white, true temper cr-mo frame/fork/stays. braze ons everywhere. it has: albatross bars vintage deore thumb shifters vintage big dia compe levers cork grips and shellacked bar tape deore dx derailleurs nos sugino lt triple crank new pasela tour guard tires new bottom bracket new chain new cables and housing new leather (gyes) saddle kickstand the weird thing is the wheels, which are 27 inch. not stock. i guess at some point somebody swapped them out for the original 700c. i didnt notice until i tried to put tires on (bought it as a frame/fork/wheels/derailleurs). anyway, the brakes work fine with 27in or 700c. clearances for 40mm tires or slightly bigger if 700c. rear spacing is 132 for road or mtb hubs. it has been cleaned, frame savered, lubed, greased etc. no dings or dents, but a moderate amount of beausage to the paint. ready to ride, but i put this together myself, so fine tuning by a more skilled hand would be beneficial. currently set up for the smallest person possible with a short stem and slammed seatpost. even then it was always gonna be slightly too big for my 5'3 girlfriend (76 pbh). i think this is more ideal for the 78-84 pbh range. here is the trek info 1990 trek catalogue http://www.vintage-trek.com/TrekBrochure1990.htm#520 im about 500$ into it and i'd like to get that out of it. gonna go to ebay and craigslist, but i thought i'd see if anyone here was interested first. i have more pictures, if interested. located in Los angeles, but would be willing to have it shipped. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
