[RBW] Re: Crankin' through the snow...

2016-02-01 Thread BSWP
Sorry Patrick, I was making an obscure reference to a topical development
in international cylocross competition. A Belgian woman is suspected of
racing a bicycle fitted with an electric motor in its bottom bracket. Many
news sources covering it. Also in today's BikeSnobNYC post.

And no, I'm not a fan of e-bikes. They're just a new form of motorized
transport.

Andrew, what's a Belgian BB and how would it help overcome rear wheel

The vast majority of inertia was from the snow on the ground. When I was on
plowed road, the riding was easy.

2016-02-01 Thread Shoji Takahashi
Hi Patrick,
I, too, miss your pics to Flickr. I'm glad to see them on that blog post.

I think Andrew is referring to the "mechanical doping" in the cyclocross
races this past weekend. (There was a hidden motor found in one of the
bicycles of a U23 Belgian rider.)

I could use a mechanical assist with the winter studded tires. I'm tempted
(but too lazy) to swap out to my regular tires during this 60+ spell that's
come over the Boston area.

Tailwinds,
Shoji

Ahh. Ha! It's all clear now. Thanks Andrew et al! It's impressive that
electric assist is small enough to not be detected now. I'll stick with my
built in electric assist Neurons firing, brain deciding to fall back to LCG
when the going is too tough), even though my system definitely has a few
shorts sparking in it. Grin.

I did find it intriguing how the snow clung to the inside circumference of
my rims such that it matches the look of modern aero rims. Clearly there is
a low pressure zone created there that I presume the aero rims eliminate.
Maybe that why I felt so zippy coming home on the road. Grin.

2016-02-01 Thread Kainalu
Here's some pouty fussiness. My $160 brazed boscos are way more beautiful than
the $160 TIGged choco-mooses. Functionally they'd be superior for one such as
myself who's looking for less rise in their mooses, but slightly less lovely
nonetheless. Not that I can't give a gorgeous TIG weld the respect it deserves,
just not $160 at the moment (the moment being that I preordered my second set
of Boscos that'll be attached to my Clemplete, I've got a dream that an
Appaloosan will want to trade their Chocos for my forthcoming Boscos, anybody?)

[RBW] Re: Hunq Effective TT

2016-02-01 Thread Deacon Patrick
I used the Hunqapillar and Quickbeam charts to compare my 62 Hunqapillar
(original frame geometry) to the 66 Quickbeam. Riv's charts show them as
being identical in terms of how they will fit, and they are. Granted,
that's Riv chart to Riv chart, and anyone measuring a different way than
went into that chart would get a different result.

That said, I got a measurement of 63.5 effective top tube for my
Hunqapillar, attempting to use a level and tape measure to make it
semi-accurate. Measurements easily could have ranged from 62.5-64.5
eyeballing it. Might it be reasonable to presume goodness and
professionalism on Rivendell's part and we presume they know what they are
talking about? Perhaps they aren't measuring center to center? I have no
idea, but it seems preposterous to question Rivendell's chart based on the
info at hand.

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] Kids bike for sale (PK Junior Ripper)

2016-02-01 Thread Clayton.sf
Hi All,

Have an SE RIPPER JR MEN'S BMX BIKE GREY 20in/18.5in Top Tube.

I got this for my son when he was in first grade and he has been riding it
for the past 3 years.
It is getting a little small for him now and he wants a new bike that he
saved up for.

I added easier gearing, shorter cranks (will supply originals too), and a
front brake and lever to it.

Bike is in excellent condition. Some scratches on seat post.

It is a very light bike. Not like the boat anchors typically sold to kids.

Would love to get this to a good home.

$200 shipped to CONUS.

Pictures upon request.

Best,
Clayton, SF

Re: [RBW] Re: Nitto Lamp Holder No. 6 (aka Nitto Screw Mount LEFT)

2016-02-01 Thread Tim Gavin
Which Champs Elysees front rack? Constructeur
 style,
or the Mini

front rack?

They both appear to have threaded eyelets on the bottom of the platform, so
you could use an arm (like a centerpull brake arm) from the eyelet to the
light. The Soma Wingmann is a new
product based on this idea.

Use nylock nuts to help prevent jiggling and loosening. You can add
nylon/rubber washers for extra grip.

Regarding the Nitto Lamp Holder #6, its bolt is designed for the 7 mm struts
 used on Nitto racks. If
you have the Champs Elysees mini front rack AND its struts are 7 mm, then
the #6 should be able to clamp to the strut.
The #6 won't work with the Constructeur rack because it needs to slide on
to an open strut.

I believe so. I don't ride off road with mine but I do ride on a narrow
paved trail at speeds up to 30mph. The light throws a pretty wide beam.
You'll probably want to helmet mount your battery light though. I wish I
had a little more visibility around corners when I'm going over 17.

In my opinion the auto light on sensor doesn't work that well on the B
lights and I prefer to switch mine manually. For me the light is almost
always on when I expect it to be off, so I just manually switch it off.

[RBW] Re: Nitto Lamp Holder No. 6 (aka Nitto Screw Mount LEFT)

2016-02-01 Thread David Banzer
If you're mounting the light on the left, you'll definitely need a bolt
that threads all the way through the threaded mount, and the put a nut on
the backside of the bolt. Vibrations & gravity will make the bolt loosen on
the left side.
I'm using a homemade mount (part of a centerpull brake), mounted on the
left side of the same rack, with a long bolt, a leather washer, and a
nylock nut on the backside. I'm using a battery-powered BM Ixon Core light,
which should be noticeably heavier than a dynamo light. No problems with
loosening that I've run into yet.
I don't think the Nitto nut would fit over the strut ends of the Soma rack
as it widens to a flat piece to mount at the midfork mount. I do have that
Nitto nut somewhere, so I could check for you.

[RBW] Re: Clemmin' Around

2016-02-01 Thread Tim Wood
I'd be willing to sell the shifters Bill if you are serious. But I want to make
sure I like the bar ends first and there is no chance that I would want to
dismantle the sunrace shifters and turn them in to thumbie bodies - if that is
even possible.

Deacon Patrick, that's funny I was looking for your front shifter in those
photos as it was glaringly missing from the bars. I assumed it was just hiding
behind the fender shield on the dt.

So, I'm curious Bill and Kai, what do like about these shifters that makes you
want to hoard them? Is there something I'm missing or is there a way I can set
them up to improve their performance?

[RBW] Re: Clemmin' Around

2016-02-01 Thread Bill Lindsay
I don't necessarily want to hoard them. It's just that they are nice
shifters and if people want to throw them in the garbage, I'll save them
from the trash bin. If I can pick up really nice shifters for really
cheap, I will stock up. They work great for me, and there is no setup
secret. They are friction shifters. If I get a ghost shift I didn't do it
right. Friction shifting isn't for everyone.

Re: [RBW] Best off road dynamo light?

2016-02-01 Thread Tim Gavin
I can't say that any dynamo light could possibly be satisfactory, alone,
for off-road riding. I will always want a helmet-mounted light so I can
look around corners on trails.

I've been doing a lot of off-roading in the dark lately; I have a fat bike
and it's dark when I get off work.
I've found that if I ride twisty trails with just a headlight on my bike, I
will run into obstacles because I'm counter-steering to keep the light on
the trail where I want to see instead of pointing the front wheel where it
needs to go.

High mounted lights, on the handlebar and/or on the helmet, seem to give
the best angle on the road ahead without blinding oncoming folks.

But even with the massive beam of the Luxos U mounted high on the
handlebars, I still found myself tilting it upward (into the blinding zone)
so I could see further down the dirt path.

[RBW] Re: Nitto Lamp Holder No. 6 (aka Nitto Screw Mount LEFT)

2016-02-01 Thread lukeheller
It's been a few months since a post on this thread so I want to bring
it back to see if anyone has any recent experience.

I'm trying to mount a LUXOS U below the bag on a Soma Champs Elysses front
rack (struts have no built-in mounts).

1. is it an effective solution? is it jiggly? many of my homemade mounts
don't keep the Luxos from jiggling around.

2. does the diameter of the strut matter? Are they all about the same? The
website specifies use on a specific rack strut.

3. and most importantly, maybe?
is this something that I might have in my nuts and bolts bin already
that I just need to put together?? I can't really see what all the parts
are. Has anyone crafted ab equivalent?

[RBW] Re: Nitto Lamp Holder No. 6 (aka Nitto Screw Mount LEFT)

2016-02-01 Thread lukeheller
I am using the MINI soma champs elysses rack. Therefore, the bolt *could* slide
up the strut *IF* the flattened section is not too wide.

*DAVID* - would you mind checking if a nitto bolt will slide over the soma
strut? - thanks

I have tried using an old centerpull arm
 but it was
way too jiggly. I could just flick the light and it would vibrate. I
didn't use nylock nuts though - would it make that much of a dfference?
I know it's mounted on the left in this pic but I will actually be mounting
the light on the *RIGHT*.

Hoot indeed! We got 6" or so a few weeks ago, and I had a blast riding ~ 13
miles in pristine snow to church and back. Our parish council President, *sotto

Re: [RBW] Best off road dynamo light?

2016-02-01 Thread Patrick Moore
I've cancelled the Supernova backorder and hope to get one of these:

http://www.klite.com.au/#!products/c3oe

High and low beams: 1000/600 lumens.

Battery pack between dyno and lamp which powers standlight and can be had
to charge USB products -- maybe even a USB lamp! Have to ask.

Niche product, but the few reviews I've seen are all 5 star.

The KLite is said to be particularly good at low speeds (eg, when climbing)
and is said to have a very bright and long lasting (10 m) standlight or
backup battery function.

Owner/maker Kerry replies right away.

And of course this does not have the German street legal cutoff, and that
is good for my use.

I may well have to augment even this light with a headlamp for singletrack,
but I expect I won't have to do this for anything short of twisting
singletrack.

That Cateye is obscene. Anyway, I'd be afraid of starting forest fires.
(That's a joke for you very earnest people.)

Re: [RBW] Re: Best off road dynamo light?

2016-02-01 Thread Patrick Moore
Even with my poor night vision, the Edeluxe I is good enough for dirt roads
(not twisting singletrack) when augmented by 200 additional lumens from a
second lamp. I've got a $40 AA battery lamp that provides at least an hour
of 250l (tested it with used alkalines for a successful hour, but not with
new ones), not to mention the MiNewt.

I'd say, if you are not night blind, "yes."
