"Bart Handle" cracked me up. New official name.
Bill, your bike looks great. That vintage blue bottle color and rocket
headbadge are a great combination. Put a Geiger counter on it, it's hot!

[RBW] Re: New bike day! R05C0 8U883

2016-12-20 Thread Bill in Roswell GA
Man, that Roscoe McCarthy is a cool bike like no other. The shade of blue
is spot-on. The head badge iconically retro. The lower horz tube, which
looked weird on the test mule olive color, looks totally natural in the
blue. I've been hauling bikes of all types up to my (thankfully only)
second floor condo. The lower horz tube is a no brainer, as in "why did no
one think of this before?". Well, maybe someone did, but if the cycling
community didn't know about it, the point is moot.

As for the fender issue with horz dropouts (ala my old Bstone and Trek, but
the Trek has adjuster screws), I co-opted someone's idea on iBob from 8-10
years ago for rear fender fit issues. To wit, long carriage bolt through
chain stay, with spring mounted between chain stay and fender - adjust
nut/bolt until fender is equi-distant from tire. I'm sure you're familiar
with that type setup as a few iBob/RBW members have used a similar setup -
otherwise I wouldn't have a clue!

When I need to remove the rear wheel on the Bridgestone, which has SKS
fenders, I just push it forward and the fender moves forward via spring
just enough that I can drop the wheel out "gracefully".

Cheers,
Bill in Roswell, GA

[RBW] Re: Quickbeam: A Three Year Retrospective

2016-12-20 Thread ctifusion
Deacon,

Thanks for both posts. Sitting at home on a cold day reading about riding when
I should have just suited up and went out!

This post inspires me to write up a similar retrospective on my Quickbeam. I've
had mine for 10 years and it is the most beautiful, fun, and inspiring bike
I've ever owned. Always makes me happy. This year I put those Barlow Pass tires
on it and was transformed again by the ride.

I hate to admit after all the interesting gear discussion that, being in
Indianapolis, I just run mine single speed. Can't tell you the ratio, just a
little harder than it should be so I can cruise the flats here.

A1 Cyclery in Indianapolis had a tall Black one this fall, not sure if it's

riding. He wasn't ready to spend the $ and we got lucky and found a tall
late-80s GT mountain bike on Craigslist. With some help from A1 we built it up
in budget Riv style. He'll be back for a Riv in a couple years. I could see it

2016-12-20 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
I vote with your daughters. I love the back a bike bags. I don't know if
you can beat the ease of frequent access. I have found mine to be a real
pleasure to use multiple times each day--love the toggles! I don't know
that the buckles and belts and what have you on other panniers would be
more or less likely to snag in the brush. I have not had issues with water,
though I do not do the kind of riding you do. Here is a fun little Riv-vid:
https://vimeo.com/123971564
I realize you are looking for something different here, but just wanted to
put in another good word for these bags!

other bags look like.

[RBW] Re: Who makes Canvas Panniers now?

2016-12-20 Thread David Banzer
For weatherproofing, the rolltop closure is probably your best bet if
you're aiming to keep water/elements out.
I don't think there's production panniers in waxed canvas right now.
Ironweed makes canvas bags, but not waxed. You could wax them yourself of
course!
IMO, Swift makes the best designed panniers, but alas they don't use waxed
canvas anymore.
I've toyed around with pannier ideas, making a pair for myself and opting
not to go with a rolltop and deciding to use waterproof bags inside for
items that absolutely can't get wet.
Here's a pair I made for a Tubus Ergo front rack:
https://www.instagram.com/p/BI3CcDVjlVl/?taken-by=treetopdesigns
I ended up using the Riv HAR trick and made a sleeve that slips into the
rack - the bags are attached with 2 leather straps each and no stiffeners
and the attachment is solid.

Your best bet is custom and Ely of Ruthworks fame would make some awesome
panniers.

[RBW] Re: New bike day! R05C0 8U883

2016-12-20 Thread Bill Lindsay
Haha Rod, I was thinking about writing a short treatise in defense of the
long dropouts. I think a wheel, when installed, should have a 'right'
position. That's the main reason I like vertical dropouts. The weight of
the bike on the axle guarantees the rear wheel registers against the
dropout in exactly the right, repeatable position. With horizontals, you
pull it back until something stops it, or you decide to position it
manually before you lock it into place. With adjustable horizontals you
adjust the stops to the desired position and then wheel installation is
unambiguous. With non-adjustible horizontals like this you get nothing
except pull it all the way back, which is what I've done. It maximizes the
long chainstay effect and I think there it no downside to long chainstays.

But.all the way back in horizontals requires you to make an unsightly
large gap at the front of the rear fender to allow you to get the wheel
out. It's ugly, but I'll get over it:

BIG gap

The key is to be casually deliberate about it. I meant to do that.

In my first few rides on the bike, I'm astonished how silent my drivetrain
has turned out. When I shift, I can't even hear it shift. It's
incredible. I'm now starting to suspect that I'm getting benefits from
having the extremely large chain wrap having the axle way behind the rear
der. It starts to look like the massive chain wrap you see on Cyclo and
Nivex rear ends:

Nivex Example

By wrapping the chain 180 degrees around the cogset, there is no chain
tension at the links that are actually shifting. With some of these 1x
setups, the chain wrap is closer to 90 degrees. So, my working strategy is
to slam the wheel all the way back and call it a modern version of an old
french rear der setup. In other words: APPROVE. The fender issue is
something I can defend.

[RBW] Re: How to crash by yourself

2016-12-20 Thread stonehog

I am healing up nicely - no scars from the brambles. The neck is still
sore and crackly, but i have most of my range of motion back. Still doing
the daily PT stretches - probably for a few more weeks.

On the bike front, things are great! I went and picked it up yesterday, in
fact. On Saturday, I received a call by a woman saying "I have your bike".
I took down her number and address and went up yesterday to get it. I
talked with her brother, who had evidently "found it laying on the side of
the road". He said that he thought someone had stolen it and ditched it.
When he got home, he noticed some blood on the helmet and bike, and said
he called the hospital to see if anyone had come in from a bike crash. No
reports, so he put it in the back shed. This last weekend, my "drew's
list" ad in the lost and found paid off, as his sister noticed it there and
asked her brother about that white bike he had found. They had the helmet,
too - good as I wanted to see what it looked like, and it looks like it
took a good bit of impact from what I'm betting was barbed wire fence, or a
viciously strong blackberry branch. The bike also still had my water
bottle on it:)

The bike is in good shape - a bit rusty from being outside (chain and
bolts, only), and it looks like he tried to take the valve stem off the
back, but it's a tubeless setup, and he couldn't get the lock ring off the
stem (scarred up the stem with a pliers a bit). I have a feeling that if
he would have been able to pump up the back wheel, I may not have gotten
the bike back. Tubeless saves the day??

I'm really happy to get the bike back, as it has some nice parts on it (Son
Deluxe, Berthoud fenders, Nitto bars, stem, seatpost, Selle Anatomica
saddle, my beloved Suntour XC Pro FD and XT RD, and of course the amazing
Rene Herse crankset). The added bonus is I had purchased a replacement
Toussaint in the new rev from the boys in Canada for a reduced price! I
just told them about the return of the original, but they said they are
happy I'm ok with 2 frames (I am!), so it's still on the way. I may make
that into the town porter/commuter, a la Bill's Rosco - it's about the same
color, and I have plenty of parts in the bin. Always wanted a low-trail
porteur town bike. Now i just need a 650B wheelset.

[RBW] Re: Black and Cream Color Scheme

2016-12-20 Thread Bill Lindsay
The thing about Black and Cream, which is true of every handlebar tape
color choice on EVERY bike, is covered thoroughly by RULE #80

Rule #80 says: Always be casually deliberate. No matter what color(s) you
choose, if you casually and confidently convey the aura of MEANING to do
that, and that you knew exactly what you were doing, you will pull it off.

Flat Grey frame--> purple and hot pink harlequin? SURE!

Matte Sage frame-> lime / grass / orange tri-color? WHATEVER!

Metallic blue frame--> burnt orange? ABSOLUTELY!

Patrick Moore is the shining example of casual deliberateness. He strolls
through the grocery store aisles walking his bike, something most of us
have never done. He pulls it off because he is casually deliberate. If
you pick a colorway, any colorway, and deliver it casually and
deliberately, it will be fine. It doesn't have to be the same color(s) on
each side. There is no 'right', and no wrong.

[RBW] Who makes Canvas Panniers now?

2016-12-20 Thread Deacon Patrick
Who makes um and what is your experience with them, especially as it relates to:
— ease of access
— weatherproof
— bikepacking and errand daily use heartiness
— other issues that stand out?

After years of use, with my TourSacks, I discovered just how much play there is
with the center load (sleeping bag, pad, tent, hatchet) anchored to the fabric
top rather than directly to the rack. (I tried my daughter’s Back-a-Bike bags).
But the Back-a-Bike bags do not look weatherproof enough and the wooden chord
closure thingy has already snagged on bits of brush and that just on the MUPS.

Carsick looks to be out of the waxed canvas biz. Frost River’s new Highway 61
look excellent and are my most likely choice. Interestingly, when I talked it
over with my daughters, they agree with Grant’s design, preferring ease of
access to full weatherproofing. They also don’t go bashing through brush the
same way I do. Grin.

Any others doing waxed canvas panniers out there and what’s your experience
with them?

I never got to ride the Brompton. My wife wrestled it away from me.

I picked up another from a kind and patient seller on the BOB list. It was
a P model, and I converted the bars over to an 'M' type, which makes it
something like an 'H'.

Seven + years later, the two Bromptons are our only bikes. I have had the
pleasure of owning five Rivendell bikes, she has owned one, and we've each
owned an RB-1 at one time or another.

I commute and ride on mine about five days per week; she on hers about
twice a week.

She, and the dog, on hers:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/sea-fisherman/20202169152/

We rarely do more than 20km on a ride, but that's only because there are
parks and coffee shops and bakeries and etc. to stop at along the way.

Cheers,

Chris (in Tucson)

[RBW] Re: Front rack for Appaloosa fork mounts

2016-12-20 Thread Bill Lindsay
Nothing wrong with wanting everything. On my recent Rosco Bubbe build, I
experienced the benefit of that. I had thought of it as a stripped down
minimalist build for my daily commute with a backpack, so I hadn't given
much thought to a front rack. When I finished the build, I remembered that
I needed something to attach the dynamo lamp onto, and realized that my
dynamo lamp was a hanging model, so I needed a front rack. I went shopping
in my own internal inventory. Turns out I had four different front racks
to choose from off the shelf, and one more that I could have easily swapped
from another bike. The rack that I ended up putting on the Rosco Bubbe was
a rack I bought off the list when it presented itself. I had no particular
bike that needed this rack, but the rack itself was undeniably cool and
useful. So I picked it up and turns out voila! I've found a use for it.

I had great success using the Nitto Big Front rack on my Appaloosa to
support a large Wald basket plus a set of Sackville Backabike rear
panniers. That mounts at the dropout and at the mid fork braze ons

I am also a huge fan of the Nitto Campee 27F, which is more of a Frenchie
front rack with a smaller platform, but with very stylish splayed out
removable lowriders. The lowriders don't fit every conceivable pannier,
and they are "made to fit" only Ostrich DLX (inexpensive) or Berthoud GB
something or other (very expensive). That rack also mounts at the dropout
and at the canti-boss if you use the hardware it comes with. Many of us
swap out the struts to go to the mid fork braze ons instead. I'm running
two of those on bikes right now.

Not using the center crown hole is a reasonable constraint. What kind of rack
do you want? A tiny rando rack? A Wald basket support? A pannier rack? A
French bread delivery porteur rack?

Or are you just trying to compile the list of all possible racks that can be

[RBW] Re: Snow powder and pack tires

2016-12-20 Thread Takashi
I bought a pair of Continental Race King
.
There are many versions (cheap ones and expensive ones); the pair I bought
was expensive ones which says "Black Chili Compound."
Rode it only short distances, but it feels grippy yet fast enough. Felt a
bit buzzy on paved road, but I felt it was acceptable.
I haven't tried it on slippery road. Maybe I will test it when there's snow.
If you want more knobby ones, there are "X-King" and "Mountain King", which
I haven't tried.

It seems that Conti's "2.0 inch" tires are a bit wider than Schwalbe's "2.0
inch" tires.

[RBW] Front rack for Appaloosa fork mounts

2016-12-20 Thread Bill Lindsay
I know that the braze ones on top of the Appaloosa fork crown are cool, and I
know it very tempting to use them. That said, there are lots of fantastic racks
out there that don't use them and instead use the other equally cool braze on
son you Appaloosa fork. My advice is to pick a rack that suits your needs even
if it doesn't utilize the fork crown bolts.

This could probably be used with Pass and Stow, and many other racks.

[RBW] Re: Winter Ramble

2016-12-20 Thread Marc Irwin
Here in Michigan we have been working with negative windchill indices and
daily snow for 10 days. It's an interesting change. The MUP's ride like a
frozen MTB trail, but there are no dog walkers or baby strollers to dodge.
I don't get the big deal, I wear my ski parka, a baklava type thing,
hunting gloves and am perfectly comfortable. People constantly express
concern for my "having" to ride my bike. They just stare when I tell them
I could drive my car whenever I'd like.

Hey that is pretty cool. I have 2 old XC-pro mid cage in a box somewhere
and plenty of 8 speed cassettes, and a sunrace 9s thumbie (for shimano). so
might give it a try. I was just about to put an 8s wheel with a 7s cassette

[RBW] Roadeo Sizing Help

2016-12-20 Thread 'Tim' via RBW Owners Bunch
I'm 5'10 with a PBH of 87.5 cm. In 2011 before I bought my Hilsen I measured
and I got 89.5 cm. Grant suggested a 63 Hilsen, which I got. Later when talking
to Keven he said either 61 or 63. I bought a used 63 Roadeo in 2013. I run a 10
cm Tallux and Technomic on the bikes. They fit great, no issues. I ride with
the bars (bot drops) level with the seat. That being said, if I were to do it
over (which I have no desire to) I would get the 61 in both bikes, more for
aesthetics than anything. I'd prefer a fistful of seat post or even a little
more. I have less than that now. And it would be easy to get the bars up high
enough. My MAP custom randonneur, which Mitch built from my measurements on my
Hilsen, and my "new" PBH, has a 59 seat tube and 59.5 TT. It fits swell as
well. When I get an Atlantis I'll go 61.

[RBW] Mix 'n match gearing

Confirmed. I do this on several bikes. The 8-speed suntour thumb shifters can
be encouraged to give you one extra "click," or hidden index position, at the
high end, so it works perfect.
