[RBW] Re: XT front derailleur with Sugino XD2 triple on a Hunqapillar?

2016-12-29 Thread Joe Bernard
I have the Claris on my Appaloosa. It's not pretty, but it works so well that
I've started to love its functional not-prettiness. Once I have it centered
over a chosen chainring, I can shift the whole range of the cassette with
hardly any front trimming.

[RBW] Crankset snafu and front derailleur conundrum

2016-12-29 Thread Garth
It will work just fine. FD specs are not absolute in any way, they speak more
to the group of componenents they are intended to work with than a rule of some
sort. I have used a 105 double with 24/44/48 and 26/36/50 no prob at all.

[RBW] Re: Silent bell until needed

2016-12-29 Thread Ian A
I just keep reading the subject line as "Silent Bell Needed". So I did a
Google search in that vein and was directed to a page about "the sounds of
five Buddhist temple bells in Kyoto, Japan when they are not ringing"

http://echosounddesign.com/media/HIgashi_Honganji.mp3
https://bolesblogs.com/2011/06/01/what-is-the-sound-of-a-silent-bell/

Not exactly on topic, but it somehow fits with the Deacon's wonderful
spirituality, so I thought I should share it.

Ian A/Canada.

[RBW] FS: Giordana 57 road frame, Nitto Campee lowrider, Stronglight 99, Campy BB, and more!

2016-12-29 Thread Tim Gavin
I have various items for sale, plus actual shipping cost via BikeFlights.
Located in Cedar Rapids, IA.

San Marcos, racks, and bags sold! Updated list, lower prices!

1) 57 cm Giordana XL-Eco road stage race frame/fork/headset, $225.
Exceedingly light lugged steel frame of thin-wall, heat-treated Excell steel;
it definitely planed for me. Springy, but not noodly. I'm selling the frame
because it's too small for me.
Designed by Dario Pegoretti, handmade in Italy by Billato Bros in the mid-90s.
Some description and geometry here.
However, this frame only clears a 700 x 26 or 650 x 36 tire.
Plenty of small chips, scuffs, and scratches (especially in the decals), but no
dents.
Downtube cable stops are included, but the knobs are corroded.
90s vintage Shimano XTR headset included
Pictures here: http://s1060.photobucket.com/user/Tim_Gavin/library/Giordana

2) 32h 700c Mavic Open Pro/Shimano Tricolor 600 wheelset, $140.

5) Stronglight 99 triple crankset, with Campagnolo Record loose ball BB, $90.
170 mm crankarm length, standard English pedal and extractor threads! 86 mm
BCD.
Campagnolo Record loose ball BB cups, Stronglight 125 mm triple spindle. ~150
mm Q factor.
52t, 42t, and 30t Stronglight rings with little wear but some dirt and scuffing.
These vintage French cranks have very low Q, but there is little clearance
between the big ring and the straight crankarm. A front derailleur with a
scuplted outer cage (most modern triple FDs) will hit the arm. I recommend a
vintage FD with a flat outer cage plate; it friction shifted great with an '80s
Suntour Cyclone FD.

6) Nitto 185 drop handlebar, $35. 42 cm width, 26.0 mm clamp, 82 mm reach, 140
mm drop. Classic curve. Not too scratched, but with plenty of bar tape
residue.
These are not the currently-produced "neat" model; the "neat" model has cable
grooves that this bar lacks.

7) Full Speed Ahead (FSA) New Ergo drop handlebars, $20. 46 cm width, 31.8 mm
clamp, 80 mm reach, 150 mm drop. New, ergo D-shaped curve, works great with
STI/Ergo brifters. VG shape with only a little bar tape residue.

8) Velo Orange Retro Mk1 bottle cages, $6 each. Good shape, but I prefer King
Iris cages.

Thanks for your interest!

Cedar Rapids, IA

[RBW] Crankset snafu and front derailleur conundrum

2016-12-29 Thread Zach Duval
I ordered a SUNXCD double crankset through a European dealer for a new build,
and unfortunately they included a 28 tooth chainring in place of the 30 I
ordered. The large chainring is a 46, so this now leaves me with an 18 tooth
gap rather than 16.

Are there any attractive front derailleurs that can handle that range?

I'm hoping to run the Riv Bullmoose bars with Microshift (I believe) bar ends
on thumbies.

[RBW] Re: XT front derailleur with Sugino XD2 triple on a Hunqapillar?

2016-12-29 Thread Bob B
Jack, Thanks for posting this thread. I've been doing a ton of annoying
trimming on my 58cm Hunq, on which I'm running a 9spd chain and an XT FD,
though I'm using Silver bar-ends. Some of the comments here are making me
want to switch to an 8spd fd. I've seen a hunq built up the same way by Riv
with a Claris fd, which is 8spd, so I'm guessing if they've done it, it
works!

That's correct, Franklyn, 26" wheels are becoming relegated to low-end mountain

I think I'm fairly sensitive to extra noise on my bike. I have Crane bells from

[RBW] Re: Musa Mitts

2016-12-29 Thread Deacon Patrick
Depending on temps your dealing with there are a number of alternatives,
all of them some combination of gloves and overmits. Look for chopper
mitts, a leather overmitt. Those combined with your riding gloves may do
you pretty well. If you need more warmth, just wear wool gloves instead of
your riding gloves.

26" tires are plentiful, but 650b/27.5 tires, especially dirt ones, are no
longer a scarcity. All the major tire makers have multiple lines for multiple
uses. I was on a online retailer's website and there was more than 150
different options. And they don't make some newer fancy tires in 26" anymore.
For example, schwalbe's new Big One/S One tires, which are either 60 or 70mm
wide, weighs less than 600g per, and have low rolling resistance, are only
available in 29" and 27.5.

Well, I fit up the Tara this evening to see how it looked - not bad! I used

crooked.

I don't have any good panniers but I may rig up some crummy old ones that I
tossed in the garage a while back. And then wait til spring to try it out!

I just started riding a bike with 48cm+ chainstays and so far, I'm liking

the fence about 650B wheels. I really, really like the handling of 26"
wheels and there are far more tire choices for 26".

On my 54 Blue Rambouillet:

700x32 Compass tires gave me *.*7cm between tire and fender at fork crown.
Too close for comfort!

700x28 Compass tires gave me 1*.*1cm - still too close!

So I 650b converted the bike. Also for safety and comfort of wide tires.

Compass 650b x 42 tires and I have about *2cm* between fender and tire
under the fork crown.
I now have air space between the tires and fenders!!!
And the bike is the same bb height now as my Bleriot!!!

[RBW] Red Rosco

2016-12-29 Thread Chris Birkenmaier
Has anyone built up a 51cm Red Rosco and have photos they could share? This
frame doesn't seem to get much chatter here but I'm guessing that is due to the
size. I like the looks and design of this one

Re: [RBW] Re: FS: Thinking about selling my Rambouillet

2016-12-29 Thread Christopher Cote
I was looking at the 700x28 Compass tires (I wish they just used numbers, I
can't remember all the names). I bet those would fit even with fenders. But
I have one fendered road bike, and maybe another on the way, so the Ram
will be reborn as a light(ish) fair weather bike. Going to a double is more
for style and differentiation. I rarely have used the granny ring on this
bike. It's just tucked in there ready for a bailout if needed.

2016-12-29 Thread Patrick Moore
I should have added that while the Compass Elk Pass tires are even more
gossamer than the Parigi Roubaix, they are a heckuvalot better at shrugging
off flats; sealant in both cases. Jan seems to have managed to combing
gossamer weight and feather down ride with stout tread.

Re: [RBW] Re: FS: Thinking about selling my Rambouillet

2016-12-29 Thread Patrick Moore
This would be a great project for some nice Bon Jon or Stampede tires from
Compass (if the BJs run small, as others seem to do, they might fit your
older version Ram). Had I not already had 2 road customs, I'd have kept my
Ram with the Parigi Roubaix tires -- wonderful combination. With some
Orange Seal in the tires there's no reason you can't ride this in the city.
I commuted very happily and speedily and smoothly on one of my Riv road
customs on indifferent urban pavement on cushy, if too narrow, 22 mm 26 X
1" Specialized Turbos for a couple of years.

Frankly, I agree with the others that you don't need 38 or 42 mm tires on
the Ram to make it purr. With the 29 mm actual PRs, mine simply purred; and
the more or less same width Compass Elk Passes, even better than the PRs,
on my 2 customs, are excessively wonderful on pavement and doughty and
smooth on firm dirt and gravel -- I'm 175.

You know, you can switch your triple to a double simply by using the inner
2 positions; say a 44 and a 30, which is what I used with a 14-23 or 24 7
speed. No need to replace or even adjust the bb or fd.

I did exactly that when I turned a 46/36/24 XD2 with 7 speed into a
Guard/38/24 9 speed (this on another bike, a Fargo, the Ram went from the
44/30 Pro 5 Vis 14-23 to a DA 7410 52/38 16-26 9 speed). Again, I didn't
need to adjust bb or fd. It all shifted very nicely with Silver bes.

Install some Honjos and some new bar tape in addition to the new double and
Compasses, and you'll have a new bike at a tiny fraction of the cost of
buying a new one. After all, it's hard to beat that signature Riv road bike
handling.

Thanks Joe,

I did / do anticipate a bit of a difference based on description and ride
reports but it does sound close enough and I was hedging my bet just a wee bit
due to my previous experience. But close enough in this case will be PLENTY
GOOD enogh cause the appa was a wow grin inducer.

Right. I have one of my IQ-Xs mounted on a metal fork crown mount from another
light. The other is mounted to a dedicated mounting point on a front rack. I

[RBW] Clem / long CS CROW PIE!

2016-12-29 Thread Joe Bernard
Welcome to the long chainstay cult! "Caddie ride with Porsche handling" is an
excellent description of how my Appa feels..I love it. I previously owned a
Clem and I think you'll be happy with it. It feels (and looks) a little more
stout than Appaloosa, but the ride is comparable, in my opinion. Enjoy!

[RBW] Clem / long CS CROW PIE!

2016-12-29 Thread Richard Rios
So a few weeks back The Wheelhouse los angeles posted on their facebook page
that they had some Clems, Appas, and Sams in stock. So I though Howdee I live
close enough to there to grab a quick look. And there is a pretty decent ramen
shop near by score twofer! Also to be completely honest the new bike bug has
been biting a bit. Anyhow I stopped by to check out the bikes, the clem that
was my size 52 had already been sold and I have owned a Sam so I was offered a
test ride on the Appa. It was a size to small but they got things close enough
for me to take it for a spin...and well WOW was I surprised! Not that I should
have been per say but I was. Two words Smooth and responsive! Like a Caddie
with Porsche handling! Also loved the choco moose bars that were on there. The
forward hand position felt really good to me and natural better than that of
the Albas for compairson. So as for the crow I've been a bit of a poopooer on
the whole long CS thing. Not in any major way but based on my experience with a
particular bike. Now I don't know if the feeling I got was because of the
smaller frame or bar position or simply because it was a parking lot test ride
and the bike is STUNNING! But man was I impressed. So much so I whent ahead and
ordered a Clem. Not the appa I know but I had sold a few bikes recently and
thats what I had the scratch for. Still might be an appa in my future as an
upgrade from clem if need be. Anyway when the Clem arrives I sure hope I have
the same experience all over again and get to eat a great big giant Clem Smith
/ long CS CROW pie!

2016-12-29 Thread Joe Bernard
Garth, you're right in general about double FDs on triple cranks, but I suspect
there's something different about the new 10-speed Shimano MTB stuff.

I disagree about chains. I've tried running 8-speed chains with 9-speed mechs,
and the constant trimming to prevent chain rub - we shift a lot on the hills
around here - got on my nerves. My Appaloosa has the reverse - 8-speed
derailer, 9-speed chain - and its glorious.

[RBW] Re: XT front derailleur with Sugino XD2 triple on a Hunqapillar?

2016-12-29 Thread Garth
A double has more than enough throw with a triple, I have a '99 105 9
speed double FD that I shift a Sugino triple w/107 Tange BB, 8 speed SRAM
chain, 13-32 7 sp. FW, chainline about 45-6mm. As far as I know the only
difference in FD models is in the cage shapes and widths, not the throws. I
do find MTB FD's with the way they shape the cage for shifting to be less
forgiving than a double with straight-er cage. This dates back to the
FD-M735 from the early 90's. Pain in the butt on my '83 Stumpjumper ,
always needed trimming.

the difference between a 8 and 9 speed chain width is very slight, 7.1 for
8 and 6.6-6.8 for 9.

Richard, for a bike approaching at 20 mph and even slowing to pass you at
10 mph, unless you're constantly swinging your head or wearing a rear view

2016-12-29 Thread Garth

  Yea Yea Leah ! !

I like the jingle bells idea too.

  Here are some practical tips . . . .

Put yourself in the "other" person shoes, forget who you think you are and
who you think they may be, forget about the circumstances, forget they were
known or unknown to you prior to this crossing just 2 or more people
sharing the same time and space. How would you like to be treated?, treat
them that way without any consideration of yourself. Do it anyways . .
. .

Look at where you ARE as the destination, where-ever that may be at the
time, not just "in your way" of getting somewhere else. We're always "on
the way" and when we get there, oh . . . "I'm sooo busy . . I have
somewhere else to be, something else to do". Always some-where or
some-thing else, but never where you ARE... You just kinda are . . may as
be friends .

[RBW] Re: XT front derailleur with Sugino XD2 triple on a Hunqapillar?

2016-12-29 Thread Joe Bernard
The Riv listing pictures three different XT mechs and labels them triples, so I
don't really know how what they sell compares to that 10-speed double. Judging
from the OP's problems with getting his to cover three rings, I would assume
the double has a shorter throw.

Re: [RBW] Re: Multi Use Path Etiquette

2016-12-29 Thread Richard Rios
Maybe I'm just weird but I do glance back every so often as I walk along. Do
the same on my bike. Keeps me from being surprised at least 80 percent of the
time. Also most bikes are not absolutely silent usually there will be some kind
of noise that alerts me to a bike comming along. Tire buzz, chain squeek, brake
squeel, friends talking and enjoying the ride, dirt or leaves being ran over.
The only problem I find with that is if some one is playing out racing
fantasies and being a bit inconsiderate, then they will close to fast to react
to and it is a bit startling. But hey if having to pay some attention to what
is going on in the environment is to much to ask ...maybe I'll just go into the
mirrors for pedestrians buisness! That way they can just look straight ahead,
with ear buds in, monitoring Fit bit, smoking a pipe, drinking a cup o' joe,
while reading Ann Patchette and still see what is going on behind them !)

Perhaps. But that part hasn't changed either. It's also made of the same

Hmm, polybrimolation. Sounds technical!

I use the tubus clamps Patrick posted, they're perfect.
I wanted to clarify my opinions on balanced loads and wiggly frames, when I say
balanced load on front lowriders, I mean side to side, not back to front. I'm
happier with all the weight on the front as low as it'll go, leaving the back
clear of any substantial load. I had an incident with some breakage earlier
this year which I at least partially credit to having a rear load on a, in this
case, quickbeam, and how that flexed the frame. I know that I'm a rear load for
the most part, but a dynamic as opposed to static one. So, for me it's static
and dynamo up front, dynamic in the back.

Yes, that problem was a too-wide chain, but now I see yours: that's a double

Garth, my thought exactly about the throw on an MTB derailleur. Using the

As to original question posed. I say yes it is absolutely ok, go for it and why

dont, just slow down a bit and go on about your buisness. I find the issue to
be with the groups of walkers or cyclist taking up the whole path talking
loudly and in general showing no concern for others. But these folks tend to be
a no win...if you just try to go around quietly they look at you all
indignantly and don't seem to want to share the space or if you use a bell they
seem startled and scatter in all directions causing even more of a ruckus and
still look at ya all indignantly. People with kids and dogs I will generally
try and give some warning because kids being kids will dart and I wouldn't want
them or fido to get hurt. Point being everyone should keep a general awareness
of others about them on multi use paths and be considerate / use common sense.
Then there really is no problem and need to signal every time you go around. I
dont honk before I pass in my car. The expectation is that as drivers we keep a

Ah, the MUP etiquette. It's confounding, isn't it? I've tried ringing bells,

kids' bikes. They were clearanced at $1 apiece, and they wrap securely around
the bars with a strong velcro closure. Thus, people hear us coming as we jingle
down the path. But for the "zombies" - folks with ear buds or phones, I just
call out in my cheeriest voice, "Good morning!" and that works splendidly.
Sometimes I yell compliments - "Love your backpack!" "What a cute dog you
have!" "Working hard! Looking good!" I know some folks are irritated initially
because they don't expect us, but it's hard to be snarky with a rider who
cheerfully calls out a morning greeting to you. "On your left" was dicey, as
people often move left, and kids don't understand it. So, cheerfulness and
compliments are the way to go, in my humble opinion!

My

Dirt Drop stem brings the bottom of the drops up to where I ride. I ride
mostly on the drops. It is about the height of most drop tops, about seat
height. I never understood why someone (except racers) would run drop bars
so low, that the drops are basically unusable (disclaimer; I have had three
back surgeries). The bar tops are way up there and give my back a break
when needed.

Something doesn't add up, a mtb derailler is designed to extend even
further out than a road since the chainlines are greater. What model of XT
FD and DA shifters are you referring to ? The pull would be the same as
far as what has been, unless it's a new model XT and something has changed
.

I thought there was thread a while ago of someone who had a similar problem

[RBW] Re: Front Low-rider Panniers on Rambouillet?

2016-12-29 Thread Kieran J
For sure! I actually have a Tara lying around but I would have to source
some proper size P-clamps to secure it mid-blade. This discussion is
helping me realize I should just rig that up to start.

I envision the Ram as a light tourer for some upcoming short trips I want
to do, in which case I would load it with light and bulky clothes and such
in the panniers, some small essentials in the Bandito and the rest in an
Acorn saddlebag I have. I liked the idea of a new fork to carry everything
on the front as I prefer, and the Ram has the 73* HT angle to make that
work, but that is of course the most costly and intrusive course of action.
Maybe later ..

It's funny - in reality, it would be way easier to use my Black Mountain
Monstercross for light touring like this - it has the fork eyelets to mount
the rack, and it has generous tire/fender clearance. However, it is a very
dull ride, and just does not have the 'pizzazz' like the Rambouillet does.
While the Ram is no BQ plane-o-matic, it is easily a nicer riding (and
better fitting) bike, so I am motivated to increase its carrying capacity
while preserving its fairly pleasant ride characteristics.

Re: [RBW] Re: FS: Thinking about selling my Rambouillet

2016-12-29 Thread Joe Bernard
I'll second Keith's thoughts about tires. I've owned a blue Ram and its cousin
Romulus, both with 28s, then Pasela 32 on the Rom, and they rode like a dream.
Fat tires are great, but the Rambouillet doesn't really need them.

[RBW] Front Low-rider Panniers on Rambouillet?

2016-12-29 Thread Bill Lindsay
I would have no hesitation whatsoever to trying a good lowrider on a
Rambouillet. My personal favorite it the Nitto F27, but many people think that
is too much money to spend on a rack. I think it's a bargain at the going
price.

[RBW] Re: Front Low-rider Panniers on Rambouillet?

2016-12-29 Thread John Hawrylak
Kieran

With all due respect, buying a low cost front low rider, Tubus Tara for
example approx. $120, and trying it seems a better choice than a new fork.

The feedback from Steve, Kai, and Patrick appear to show the Ram can handle
a moderate front load well, and heavier loads if balanced front to back.
I'm sure if Patrick was to haul 40lbs total a lot, he would split it front
to back. The fact 40lb was handled OK with sluggish steering indicates a
low rider would be no problem.

[RBW] Re: Front Low-rider Panniers on Rambouillet?

2016-12-29 Thread John Hawrylak
As Kai from Brooklyn pointed out, the key for a 'normal' trail geometry is
balance the load front to back. Rear loads are more difficult on low
trial. The 'no free lunch' proves true again.

Your IQ-X has a metal mounting bracket? I wonder if they changed the design
from the first production units. Mine (an early one) has a one-piece split
plastic mounting ring with plastic tabs. Can you take a picture of yours?

Re: [RBW] Front Low-rider Panniers on Rambouillet?

2016-12-29 Thread Patrick Moore
I never used front low riders on my Ram (one of the later ones, FWIW), but
I did have them built and installed on my 2003 custom, and the bike handles
10 per side very well, and I've carried 20 per side, which made the
steering sluggish.

As Steve said, there's a huge difference between carrying a front load up
high over the wheel, and on low riders.

Re: [RBW] Re: Silent bell until needed/Using a bell

2016-12-29 Thread Ron Mc
I had a conversation with a lady one day whose black thin yo-yo leash was
more than corner-to-corner across a greenway intersection. It was
invisible.
Next time I saw her, it wasn't any shorter, but had a bright colored boa
running from the dog.
Yo-yo leashes are supposed to be outlawed on greenways, but it's not
enforced.

Always the threat huh Steve ?The dead squirrel images you post.. .

to who ?

You try running from a cop who wants to write you a ticket for running a
stop sign or in some jurisdictions, failing to come to a foot-down stop
at a stop sign. I'm not threatening you, just pointing out that what
you're suggesting could be a very dangerous course of action. There are
very few "kids on bikes" reading this list.

[RBW] Re: Multi Use Path Etiquette

2016-12-29 Thread Philip Kim
I use a MUP to work everyday. I always ring my bell to alert them once I'm
within 20-15 feet or so. And if they don't acknowledge by moving to the
side, then they probably have headphones in and didn't hear me, and I'll
ring again once I'm within 7 feet and slow down. Then I'll usually say
"How's going?" or "Thank you" as I'm within ear shot.

I've used the same MUP as a runner on the weekend and felt some sort of way
when a bike sped past me without warning.

You don't really state how fast your ride, or how slow you slow down. Most
bikers on the MUP ride around 15-20 mph, which is 3-4 times faster than a
runner, and 5-10 times faster than a walker. Even if you slowed down to 10
mph, it's still pretty fast compared to someone who is walking. 3-5 feet
when someone is going by that fast without warning can be pretty unnerving.

Of course passing without warning is fine if there are no accidents, but it
mostly benefits you as a rider and not the pedestrian. So that doesn't
really acknowledge pedestrians having the right-of-way.

You're right, it can be incredibly frustrating when pedestrians don't hear
you or yell at you when you're trying to bike to work or go about your
business and trying to do the right thing, and I've too questioned "what's
the point?". I think more bicycle to pedestrian interactions can make the
MUP a safer and bicycle-friendly path. It's hard enough getting paths to
allow bikes to be ridden on it as is.
