Re: [RBW] Spitballing: Hunqabeam fixed conversion ideas

Didn’t realize they made 23t freewheels. If you’re up for a freewheel gear, in
the general range would be 34/15 fixed and 26/23 freewheel.
Theoretically the chain length would be the same. But still, not a fixed gear
for the bailout.

Veloce, for

Sometime last winter/spring/summer I saw the Veloce groupset for ~370 which

[RBW] Best Rack for a large saddlesack on a large frame?

2017-11-28 Thread Birdman
Hey bunch,

I'm building up a 65cm Double TT Atlantis (yay, dream bike!). I'd like to
use a large saddlesack for short tours and wonder what rack support might
be best for a large frame. I was planning to use a 33R large rear rack
before I decided on a saddlesack, but now I wonder how well it will work
with the large frame, my 95 pbh, and subsequent saddle height. From
pictures, it looks like the saddlesack will need to attach to the saddle
with a rack high enough and close enough to the seat tube to support the
bag. Maybe there's more wiggle room and adjustability with the R14 rack?
Anyway, I thought I'd tap the collective wisdom here before calling Riv
HQ. Any thoughts? Am I over thinking this?

[RBW] Re: My new Fairweather handlebar bag via Blue Lug via Rivendell

2017-11-28 Thread Bill Lindsay
Bob B asked about the 'white things'.

It is a stack of four pale-grey foam spacers. There are two straps to go
around your handlebar. Each strap is webbing that threads through those
spacers and it has a nice locking buckle. That entire assembly can be
taken apart. Here's a photo of the carcass of the bag with one
strap+spacer-stack assembled, and one stack disassembled:

Is it just padding? I think of it more as spacers. I imagine a bike with
straight bars and trigger shifters hanging below the bars might need more
spacers. I imagine my own bikes with drop bars will not necessarily need
as many. I presume the more spacers you use, the more room there may be
for your fingers to wrap around the tops of your drop bars.

Are they necessary? We will see. I think that using at least one will
allow you to really pull the strap tight, compressing the foam. Zero might
work just as well. We'll see. If it's just the color that's bugging you,
it would be easy to go at them with a sharpie and make them black. Haha.

Igor asked if there was a reason I did not order my bag direct from Blue
Lug.

Yes, there are several reasons. The main one is that it always works out
better for me to spend money at Rivendell Bicycle Works if I can. If I
need something they don't sell, of course I go buy it wherever I need to.
In this case, I had picked the bag, and I could have ordered from Blue Lug
for the same price. Buying it from Rivendell allowed them to make a few
bucks. That policy always works out in my best interest.

Re: [RBW] Spitballing: Hunqabeam fixed conversion ideas

2017-11-28 Thread Deacon Patrick
Great point, Eric. The idea would be to ride the 60” gear as my “always” gear,
with the 30” as a bailout to make me more comfortable trying fixed bikepacking.
I wouldn’t be at all surprised if I get out there and delight to find I ride
95% of the ridable stuff on 60”, so no need for a bail out gear. Grin.

Part of what I need to learn is does riding fixed make it easier to gear up vs.
SS, even on sustained climbs because of the fly wheel effect pushing the pedals
through the “dead zone”?

With abandon,
Patrick

Okay, what’s up this time?

   - MUSA (Rivendell) “Splats”, size “C” (fits men’s shoe size 9 to 15?)

I have purchased the Sackville large-size saddle bag. I would like to find
a better way of carrying it off-bike than as a big lump. It doesn't come
with a carrying strap or with loops to which such a strap could be readily
attached. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Trying to break a chain via master link out in the field when it’s cold and
dirty seems like a recipe for frustration. If you’re using the older hub,
with screw on cog, it would be a lot easier to run a double cog and two
rings up front.

[RBW] Re: Spitballing: Hunqabeam fixed conversion ideas

2017-11-28 Thread Bill Lindsay
I think it makes sense in theory. Using the crankset you already have, I
think that gives you only one option, which means less fretting, I
suppose.

That one option is a 48 tooth big ring, a 24 tooth small ring, on the
110/74 crankset you already have, mated to the largest White Industries
fixed cog, 20-teeth. With a 50mm tire that would give you gears of 68 and
34 gear inches. Go 24/44 and you'd be at 34 and 60 inches with 50mm
tires.

If you were emphatic about getting a lot closer to 30 on your low gear,
you'd nail it with a 94/58 crankset with a 22 and a 44 tooth rings.

[RBW] WTB: Nitto R-14 without tombstone

2017-11-28 Thread Daniel M
Also posted on i-BOB:

A rear platform rack is the last piece of the puzzle on my first-ever
bottom-to-top bike-and-wheel build. I've cobbled together my ultimate do-it-all
rough road touring bike: a new (non suspension-corrected) Surly Troll frame
with a used Rohloff out back and a new SP dynohub up front, both laced (by me;
first time) to 26" Velocity Dually rims, which allow me to run my beloved 2.35"
Supermotos and experiment with tires in the 2.8-3.0" range for the horrendously
bad backroads of Death Vallley and the like.

Riv is out of stock; I can find other sources but the price of these things has
gone up quite a bit since I last owned one! Does anyone have a Nitto R-14
WITHOUT the tombstone that they would be willing to sell to me at a reasonable
pre-owned price? They pack flat so shipping should be pretty easy!

Thanks in advance for all replies.

Re: [RBW] Re: re bar-end shifters on dirt-drop handlebars

2017-11-28 Thread Tim Gavin
Personally, I like the Salsa Cowchipper. They are Cowbells but with more
flare (~20 vs ~10 degrees). Their drops are parallel to the top tube,
unlike the wide-flare Woodchipper bars.

But they only come in 31.8 and black, so that rules them out for some
folks.

I use Nitto B135 Randonneur bars on my Riv. They have about ~10 of flare,
and they hump "up" a little bit across the tops. I find them very
comfortable.

[RBW] Re: re bar-end shifters on dirt-drop handlebars

2017-11-28 Thread iamkeith
Responding to my own response: Hard to keep up, with so many options
available these days.

Just did a google image search of Midge bars. While they flare outward at
the hook part of the bar, the lower drop portion itself is actually aligned
more parallel to the bike frame. So my comment about shifters sticking out
too far doesn't apply to them after all. You can see, in almost all
images, that people have aligned them with the bar though - not vertical.

Also just saw a newish bar called the Genetic Digest, which seems to be a
copy of the Woodchipper, in which the drop section is similarly flared
outward, EXCEPT that the very end is bent back toward parallel with the
bike frame, to solve the problem I mentioned.

Re: [RBW] Re: Roadinis could be arriving any day now?

2017-11-28 Thread Don Compton
Just looking at the Roadini frame from the side, it looks like it has the
longer chainstays of the Ram vs the Roadeo. The Ram had less room between
the chain stays ( width) than a Roadeo or many of their current models. I
bet that the Roadini is a great road bike that can handle today's fat but
lightweight tires.

[RBW] Re: re bar-end shifters on dirt-drop handlebars

2017-11-28 Thread iamkeith
My preference for "normal" dirt drops like the WTB and Nitto ones, is
aligned with the flare of the bar - so rotated a bit from vertical. Part
of the reason for the flare is that it more closely mirrors the natural
angle of your grip. If you rotate the bar-end shifters vertically, you
have to rotate your hand back to the un-natural vertical every time you
shift. (Well, depending on the position of the lever and which way you're
shifting, you may not "have to" rotate your hand, but then it feels
awakard.)

However, on REALLY wide and flared dirt drops like the Salsa Woodchipper,
I've decided I don't like bar end shifters at all because they stick out to
the side too much when installed in this proper alignment. Every time I
lean the bike against something, and half of the times when I mount or
dismount the bike, I end up bumping the shifter into another gear.

Woodchipper has a long enough grip at the drop part of the bar to not to
"require" the bar end shifters. I'm not sure how something like a Midge
would work, where the grip is too short without the shifter, but people
seem to adapt.

more wire wrangling. But that's just how it is.

I used Shoe Goo to glue the wires to the frame, and it's holding up great.

Re: [RBW] re bar-end shifters on dirt-drop handlebars

2017-11-28 Thread Tim Gavin
Jim-

I've pondered this as well. Any flare makes it impossible to get the
shifters perpendicular; even if they're "straight up and down" when
resting, their action causes them to swing outward.

So, you just do what feels right to you. I've used Randonneur-type flare
bars, with less than 20 degrees of flare, and just mounted the shifters
orthogonal to the drop ends. But I've never used massively flared bars
(~45 degree) like Woodchippers or Nitto RM-3's. I think I'd prefer a
different shifter type (Gevenalle, maybe) on that type of bars.

I know that with the Sanyo, you can't run the leads on the non-drive side

Re: [RBW] Re: Dynamo Hubs

2017-11-28 Thread Tim Gavin
Belopsky-

There are different opinions on light placement.

My opinion is the left (non-drive side) is better, because it's more
visible to oncoming traffic and any tire shadow is thrown into the ditch
instead of on to the road.

But I prefer to mount the light high and central if possible. One of my
bikes has a Luxos on the middle of the handlebar, one has a Luxos on the
front of a Nitto Mark's rack, and one has a Cyo Premium on the left side of
a Nitto M12 rack.

[RBW] re bar-end shifters on dirt-drop handlebars

2017-11-28 Thread Jim S.
This is a small point, but the type of thing that I ponder in my free time.
I am trying out some dirt-drop style handlebars that flare out at the ends
of the drops. Do folks with these bars angle their bar-end shifters so that
they are consistent with the flare of the bars, or do they angle the
shifters so that they are on a plane perpendicular to the ground? I think
they'll shift fine either way.

But I'm wondering if there are any practical considerations for one way
versus the other, in addition to people's opinions on the aesthetics.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

Doug,

A good option for an inexpensive starter dynamo is the Sanyo hub that Peter
White sells: http://www.peterwhitecycles.com/sanyo.php

I've been running on for a little while now on my commuter, which I lock
outside and don't like to put too much money into. It's been working fine.
And like most dynamos, it powers my front and rear lights.

Hi Doug,
Yes, dynamo hub can power front and rear lights. If you're interested in
charging battery pack (e.g., phone) while touring, an appropriate dynamo
hub and accessory plug can do so.

Shutter Precision hubs are available in "S" designation for 6V/2.4W and "P"
designation for 6V/3W. How to choose? From Velolumino.com:

Also lots of information on Peter White's page:

I use lobstah mitts just because I'm from Maine ;) I find them to be a
good mix between glove/mittens. the 'naked neighbors' keeping each other
warm. Banding together as good neighbors allowing for good dexterity/grip
on the bars. Digits 4/5 gripping the bar along w/ 1 and 2/3 doing the
braking.

I use these mostly for flat bars on the fat bike, but use also them
comfortablly on the QB w/ noodles. When it gets into the single digits
I'll swap over the bar mitts/pogies, well actually 45NRTH Cobrafists,on the
fat bike. I just picked up some drop bar Bar Mitts for the noodles-not
cold enough yet for use of those.

The Roadini is a nice looking bike, and I totally understand the reason to
go with a sloping top tube.
The other thing Grant didn't say in regards to this model but, the sloping
top tube allows them to make less frame sizes to fit more people/sell more
bikes :)

IMO i very much dislike sloping top tubes unless it's a mixte or a
step-through thing

Its an on off switch, if your model is built with it for that.
No levels of brightness. Just on/off.
And yes, unless you are in deep darkness, it will never be as bright as
pictured in the online vendors' pics. And, if like mine, won't be nearly as
smooth distribution of light. Mine has three fields of light shooting out from
tge lens. Not a universal flood like pictured on vendors' sites.

Re: [RBW] Re: Roadinis could be arriving any day now?

2017-11-28 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
Then again, maybe you're ready now for sedate and stoutish...

>From what the designer has said several times since the model was
announced, the Roadini was more or less created to be a less expensive
alternative to the company's "road bike" model, ie, the Roadeo. I did not
look to compare the geometries between the Roadini and the Ram, but if you
are of the J. Heine School of Planing, it may be that, rather than geometry
differences between the three models, a slightly thicker tubeset, while not
of any consequence weight-wise, could dampen the "spirited riding" ever so
little of a bit as to put the Roadini more in the Ram than the Roadeo
territory in terms of road feel. If so, I suspect that would not affect the
great majority of people who want a go out for a 20-60 mile fast
recreational ride type of bike. Especially those who never had a Ram which
they felt was too sedate.

in 2015 we sketched out a bike with the ride of the roadeo and all the
qualties a road bike should have. it’s safe, comfortable, good for all
roads & weather, and fun to ride. this June we’ll have it: the
italian-sounding roadini.

*Roadeo vs RoADini *

1. the roadeo has lighter tubes, but roadini’s tubes are light enough.
they’re our own silver design, but we’ve chopped from the big-butted ends
to minimize weight. it’s probably slightly stronger than necessary.

2. the same tire clearances —up to a 35mm with no fenders, and easily a
28mm w/fenders.

3. roadini’s chainstays are a hair longer than the roadeo’s (which are
already longer than most)—so it’s more stable, but still zippy.

4. the roadini top tube slopes up more, so it’s easier to get the bars
high. your roadini size is 2-3cm smaller than your roadeo size.

5. the roadeo frame is made in america and is all lugged, which makes it
our flagship road bike. the roadini frame is made in taiwan, is tig-welded
except for a seat lug, weighs a few ounces more, and costs $1,450 less

Glomitts (gloves with a flip over mitten) make a great under mit for extreme
cold (-10˚F and below), when you never want much bare skin exposed even when
you need manual dexterity (but you’ll only have it for 8.3 seconds, so work
fast!).

In my experience with boiled wool mittens, buy to size. They fit the bars just
fine (you can also buy the 4-ply with a curl already shaped into them, but I’ve
never tried this).
