[RBW] Re: The ups and downs of my Clem Smith Jr

2018-09-12 Thread Collin A
I've had luck switching the Boscos out with the MAP bars on my 52h. The
most useful/comfortable position on the Boscos were also the most
inconvenient, I found. The MAPs makes me less upright, but I have more
control in and out of the saddle, and feel like I am slightly more
efficient in my pedaling by using my glutes more than my hamstrings.

I could probably do with 66cm length (what the Riv Wavie is supposed to
be), rather than the 61.5 though, because I always find myself hanging on
with the inside of my hands on the very ends of the bars.

Good luck!

> (including and especially the billie), i realize how much I actually like

I'm on the same boat!

In last couple of months I have tried 4 other bars (some multiple times)
and settled back with 58cm Bosco.

Other than various Riv handlebars, I have also tried Jones and Open bar.
Personally I like open bar better than Jones.

Bosco is now my everyday bar. Will swap to open bar if any ride comes up
that'll involve a lot of rough patches.

I did not enjoy Boscos initially until I got the correct size stem (11cm
Tallux). Somehow, the Ergon cork grip (which I had liked on all other
bars) does not work well with Bosco. Round grips feel perfect for this
bar.

I'm guessing the stock Clem build is intended to make it a general
purpose/utility bike. Stem length tweaks aside, Tallux/Bosco combo is
great for such bikes. I remember reading Grant making an argument in favor
of quill stems. He says that they are better at reducing vibrations.
IMO, considerable micro flexing is inherent in Tallux and Bosco designs.
It is quite noticeable how much vibrations this combo absorbs. With
Bosco, I do not feel any numbness in wrist after full day's ride. Of
course, the downside of flexiness is that they are not suitable for rough
tracks.

[RBW] Re: Berthoud fender installation questions

2018-09-12 Thread Brian Campbell
I did not know Berthoud made different lengths.I got mine from Peter WHite
Cycles. My Berthoud's were shorter than a pairs of VO or Honjo long
fenders I have installed. You can install, ride and then see. Ben's cycles
sells individual fender stays if you need just one.

As for 700c, I am of the opinion tha a conversion almost always includes a
compromise. The bike was designed for 700c wheels and it will perform its
best being used how it was designed to be used. Just an opinion and nothing
against 650b.

We live in relatively the same area ( I am in SE PA) and my ridng over the
last 15 years went from skinny tire road bike, to fat tired road bike and I
have landed at meduim tire road 32mm or 35mm tire) bikes for the following
reasons;

I primarily ride paved roads. I don't need massive tires for comfort.
I don't like the way tires that are too big feel. Subjective, yes but I
like a bit of road feel. Earsing it is not my primary goal.
I don't carry big loads. Even when I have done 200k rando events, I fit
everthing I needed in an Acorn seat bag. I travel light because to me, it
is more fun.
I don't like to carry unneccesaary weight. It makes riding less fun.

Allof this is just an opinion and not meant to make anyone in the group
irrate!

I don't think there are any ramblings. I've perused his old posts pretty
extensively and have seen nothing by him on this subject; and I've seen no
photo of him riding anything except a road bike with skinny tubulars. I'd
be very surprised if 650B even registered with him; he was so much a part
of the old-style steel and toe clip roadie school, and rode his 700C X 23
mm tubulars off road all over Northern California and all over the Alps; I
expect he'd have looked at you in wonder and skepticism if you'd suggested
that he try 650B.

If anyone can show otherwise, I'd be happy to know about it.

@aspgh: My 650b H50's wont fit betweixt chainstays without bending.

Thinking I could go back to 70c x 32 and 700c x 40 Berthoud fenders as he
rates them for tires up to 32mm.
Peter White says 700 x 50 is better to be safe.
But if Gilles says 40, I am good with that. I would probably like the
slenderer fender look better anyway.
My 42mm tires and H50 Honjos are looking huge.

The only challenge will be the clearance under sidepulls on the fork.
I used to have Paul centerpulls on a Bleriot and then changed to R559 and
don;t recall any better vertical clearance over the P45 I had on that bike.

But this is a 700c bike which will have 700c wheelset and 700c fender set.
Things may be more spacious.
I really like the 700c ride of my Roadeo.
I can;t remember if I could tell any diffs in the Ram when I 650b converted
it.
main reason was to have widest tires poss on it.
But 32's are wide enough I am finding with the Roadeo.
So I may go back to 700c on the Ram.

Super idea! I remember the article - made sense to me. The smaller gauge
der. cable is strong enough, but has none of the built-in 'bow' (caused by
stiffness of the thicker cable), so there's no slack to take up when
initiating braking. Looking fwd to trying this out and comparing. Thanks!

[RBW] The origins of bar-end shifters and other mysteries

2018-09-12 Thread Jan Heine
Many of us love bar-end shifters, but little is known about the history of
these handy little things.

On the blog today, we're looking at one of those fascinating mysteries of
cycling history: Why did 22 racers switch to bar-end shifters DURING the
1949 Tour de France? And why did they use only one bar-end shifter, to
control the front derailleur, but kept their downtube lever to operate the
rear derailleur?

Aldo Ross dove into his collection of sepia-tone magazines, we scoured the
*Bicycle
Quarterly* archives, and we solved this mystery as much as it can be solved
almost 70 years after the fact. Head to the blog to read about this and
other mysteries from cycling's rich history.

[RBW] Re: New Breeks and Old Leaves

2018-09-12 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
Ginz, I chose tweed. There is a thin, slick nylon (acitate?) lining on the
front of the leg only, full length. They can also use a thin cotton (same as
pockets, less slick) and I plan on asking if they can use a thin worsted wool
as well. The lining makes motion very smooth, even when damp.
I’m unsure how no lining would work, but presume that is also possible on
request.

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] Re: ISO: The right rear rack

2018-09-12 Thread Tom Wyland
I think the correct rack (or bag support thing) will be driven by the
distance between the seat loops and the desired bottom of the bag. Where
is that plane compared to the upper rack eyelet level? Also think about
how close the bag bottom should be to the seatpost and if you'll have rub
on your brake cable (especially cantis). A tombstone will either helpful or
just get in the way. It's hard to say for sure, but that should get you
started.

HaHA! Yes, this is a tweed one. It's sort of a mediocre bag compared to
what is out there today such as the Acorns or Sackvilles, etc, but's it the
bag I have, it works fine for what I need, and I still love the look of
it. But I think it would look better supported by a rack, along these
lines instead of dangling:

I did consider selling this bag to fund a Sackville or Zimbale, but I
decided I'd rather tinker with this one to add some interior pockets and
maybe a stiffener. If I need something bigger or more waterproof someday,
I'll get it when I know what I need rather than guessing about it now.

[RBW] WTT: 60cm canti-Saluki

2018-09-12 Thread C.J. Filip
Kind of testing the waters here, but would like to trade 60cm canitlever
Saluki for a like-sized Legolas (57-59cm).

The Saluki is black with the cursive decals. Earlier edition without
kickstand plate. Trade would include F/F/HS/wheels, maybe other bits (like
Compass/Rene Herse crank) depending.

Inquiries welcome for trades only. Not looking to sell unless I can find a
Legolas.

[RBW] Re: ISO: The right rear rack

2018-09-12 Thread Lum Gim Fong
Sackvilles come with stiffner, even better.
You could get a pretty penny for the Smythe to help fund the Sackville, too.
Just an idea. Thinking outside the box. Why have weight of s rack unless really
needed? And the I don’t think the Nittos are rated for any heavy weights anyway.
Of course, I understand aesthetics play alot into decision making. So depends
which bags you like the looks of better.

[RBW] Front vs. rear loads for AHH

2018-09-12 Thread EasyRider
I really like the sackville trunksack small. It carries a lot more than I
would've thought, but it's hard to make it heavy, even full. I use mine to
carry life's doodads ... snacks, wallet, keys, phone, tools, hardware store
errands, camera, all that stuff at the same time. I pair it with a small
carradice saddle bag if I'm commuting and need to take a change of clothes. It
comes on and off a small front rack very easily but it is also the most secure
front bag I've ever used.

I also use and enjoy the swift ozette on a low trail bike, and a basket and
medium shopsack on another. Those bags are better for commutes that include a
beer run, but the trunksack is better for traveling light or when the handlebar
situation makes a basket or randonneur bag difficult to fit.

[RBW] Re: ISO: The right rear rack

2018-09-12 Thread Lum Gim Fong
Are the Smythe bags waterproof like Sackvilles?
I thought I heard they are not. If that is true, why not get a Sackville? They
don’t need a rack (so less weight/less failure points) and you can put a
coroplast stiffner on the bottom to keep it flat.

[RBW] Re: ISO: The right rear rack

2018-09-12 Thread Tom Wyland
There is also the Nitto R-10, if you don't mind attaching to your seatpost.
It allows the rack to snug up a little higher if you have lots of seat post
exposed. It requires mid-seat-stay mounting points and doesn't have a
taillight mount. It also doesn't have to sit level, which might be an
advantage.

[RBW] Re: Bar-end brake levers on Albastache?

2018-09-12 Thread Garth

I can't tell exactly the reach/height of your stem as shown, but a stem with
more rise, like a Dirt Drop will certainly offer more height so you could keep
the bar.

The VO Porteur offers 40mm more rise, if that is indeed enough, I assume you
are aware that they come in 22.2 or 23.8 ? With a 23.8 the bar end levers you
have will fit perfectly.

[RBW] Re: Front vs. rear loads for AHH

2018-09-12 Thread Drew Henson
i'm on the pre-order for the MIT AHH and it will be my primary commuter,
and plan on setting it up like Grant's AHH as shown on the staff bike page-
Mark's rack with basket on the front and pletscher rear rack and medium
saddlesack on the back. this should easily handle my typical load (change
of clothes + lunch + tools). if i need a heavier load i'll just use
panniers on the rear. i suspect i wouldn't like a heavy front load handling
based on my experience with a front load on a surly lht I used to have.
never felt quite right.

my current commuter is an elephant nfe which is low trail. it handles a
front load beautifully unless i go too heavy. then i get a shimmy at high
speed and that's a whole other ball of wax.

[RBW] Rolling Coal On That Coastal Stallion

2018-09-12 Thread Neil Doran
Congrats good Sir, and a very fine bike! It chagrins me to learn that ‘coal’ is
‘rolled’ on the Oregon coast, as I thought that 1) ‘coal’ was ‘rolled’ only
east of the mighty Mississippi, and 2) that the OR coast was the realm of
virtuous drivers, copious hiker-biker camping, and ‘live and let live’
mentality. And good ice cream. Thank you for the education, and ride on!
