[RBW] Re: Atlantis build - how retro should I go on the drive train?

2019-02-22 Thread Philip Williamson
All this yes.
Nine speed is where I've been for a long time, and just jumped to 11sp on
some bikes. Larger 11sp cassettes fit on 9sp (8/9/10) hubs, because the
biggest cog is dished. You'll be fine for a long time. 10sp doesn't offer
me anything, but 11sp cassettes are actually nice. I like wide range
chainrings, and narrow-range cassettes, or at least close-spaced mid-high
gears. I mostly settled on 9sp gear because my dingle fixed setups need the
narrow chain, if that's worth anything (more like a warning).

[RBW] Re: Atlantis build - how retro should I go on the drive train?

2019-02-22 Thread dougP
On the hub question, 8/9/10 speed cassettes all fit the same hubs. With
the amount of 9 & 10 speed stuff around, those hubs will be useful for a
long time.

As to the number of cogs, based on your experience with 10 speed you may
want to stick to 8 or 9. 6/7/8 all take the same chain, and 9 isn't too
much skinnier. While 7 & 8 are hard to find on the shelf at bike shops,
there's lots on the internet. 7 is still used by OEMs in underdeveloped
countries so will be with us forever. With a simple spacer 7 can be used
on some 8/9/10 hub bodies. Enough stuff was produced with 9 speed that
there will be a decent supply for a long time.

The Atlantis being a touring, commuting & general purpose bike I'd suggest
a wide range cassette & triple, but my bias here is what I've got on my
Atlantis. As I get older, my chainrings get smaller. Several years ago I
settled on 24/34/44 in front. I use the 12-34 8 speed Sunrace cassette
that Steve mentions. My shifters are some vintage Suntour thumbies with
the ratchet mechanism (think 80s MTB) but I'm waiting for the new Silver2
shifters that Rivendell is working on. Rivendell uses the 12-36 9 speed on
a lot of builds.

Regarding hubs, my Atlantis came with XTR cassette hub in 2003. 16 years
later it's still going strong. Service consists of greasing the bearings &
pumping fresh Phil's oil into the hub ever couple of years. I lost track
of mileage at 70,000.

Since you're building an Atlantis, I have to comment on brakes. Long story
short, I've found V-brakes work wonderfully and are easy to install. I
have used a couple of cantilevers but IME the Vs are much more user
friendly, both installation & function. They are out of the way of bags.
Mine are a generic Shimano (no other ID) & cost around $30 each a while
back.

Have fun with the build, & post pics when complete.

[RBW] Re: Indexing 10sp big cassette

2019-02-22 Thread Nick Payne
When Shimano went to 10-speed on road and MTB, they kept the pull ratio the
same for road but changed it for MTB, so 10-speed road and MTB are not
compatible. If you're using a 10-speed Shimano road shifter and a 10-speed
Shimano MTB derailleur and 10-speed cassette, then to get indexed shifting
working you need a Jtek shiftmate 6, or equivalent, to change the pull
ratio. Alternatively, a 9-speed Shimano MTB rear derailleur on its own will
get index shifting working with the 10-speed road shifter. I'm using that
second combination on one of my bikes and it works perfectly.

BTW, you're supposed to use a Goatlink with a shadow type derailleur - the
Roadlink is for use with conventional type derailleur.

[RBW] Re: Indexing 10sp big cassette

2019-02-22 Thread Ed Carolipio
I seem to recall - but can't find the reference - that Shimano cable pulls
for road/MTB rear derailleurs/shifters were incompatible starting with the
10 speed groups, and continuing with 11sp and 12sp. Here's the Shimano
cross compatibility chart (see pg 5 for MTB RDs and pp.15 and 16 for road
RDs): http://productinfo.shimano.com/download/pdf/com/2.7/en

The model for the Microshift shifter is SL-M10 MTB. I've used that as
indexed on an SLX 10 speed RD.

Re: [RBW] Indexing 10sp big cassette

2019-02-22 Thread Justin, Oakland
Definitely a case of shifter/derailleur mismatch. You need either the
Microshift Thumbie in black, a 10 speed mountain shifter or a Tanpan
shiftmate. Or - get a new derailleur. Or switch it to friction.

Friction is simplest
Tanpan is lowest barrier to indexing
Microshift Thumbie is most analogous to what you have
10 speed mountain shifter is next
New derailleur is most intensive IMO

[RBW] Indexing 10sp big cassette

Over the years, I've had at least three cases of rear derailer misalignment

Interesting. That could be it. I bought the derailleur, unused, off this list
or ibob as “xt long cage clutch” or something like that. Probably a mountain
derailleur, So that would maybe make sense. Hmmm

Speaking only for one particular 8 speed cassette: Shimano discontinued
the XTR M900 8 speed 12-32 cassette at least 10 years ago.  A couple of
years ago, I noticed SunRace had reintroduced a 12-32.  I've got one.

The model is CSM66.   It's not as nice as the old XTR, not made on a
spider but rather has full sized rings riveted (I think) together, and
possibly it may not shift quite as smoothly as the old XTR, but it's
available, it's fairly inexpensive, and it can easily be converted to a
13-32.  There's also a 12-34.   (There are also a bunch that start with
11 - I dislike cassettes that start with 11, except for the 11-28 I have
on my Moulton AM and so don't pay much attention to them.)

I think it's a sweeping over-generalization to say "going extinct."

[RBW] Atlantis build - how retro should I go on the drive train?

2019-02-22 Thread Joe Bernard
8/9/10 hubs are very common, and a lot of 11-speed hubs come with a spacer you
slide on first, then an 8/9/10 cassette. So I'd say go ahead and get your
wheels and 8-speed cassette, my guess is the it'll be many years before you
have to abandon those gears.

When you say "newer" what do you mean?  Is there any chance you've got a
10 or 11 speed DynaSys rear derailleur that you're trying to operate
with a 10 speed road shifter?  If that's the case, there's a cable pull
mismatch and you'll need a different WolfTooth product, the TanPan to
fix it.

-dura ace 10 speed shifter on Paul thumbie

Previously, I had this bike in friction mode, but on the high gears, I couldn’t
get the chain to stay on one ring, lots of ghost shifting. So I got a 10 speed
index shifter, put it on and can’t get it to shift remotely well. The three big
low gears are fine but the bottom/high 7 are all over the place. The weirdest
part is that when I set it up, it sits in the highest gear fine, but as I shift
around and play with it, it won’t go back to that gear, and as I play with it
more, it won’t even go into the second highest gear. When I unclamp the cable,
it resets and goes back into the high gear. The other weird thing is that the
limit screws don’t hit the piece they are supposed to to make adjustments. They
are super far away and barely touch when fully screwed in. Maybe this is a
result of the roadlink?
I’m about to just buy an 8 speed cassette and go friction, but if anyone has
any advice I’d love to hear it.

Re: [RBW] Re: My first Rivendell!

2019-02-22 Thread hugh flynn
I have yet to find a detailer or brakes that outlast shimano's 7 speed
Deore DX line. I certainly don't hesitate to pull them off thrift store
bikes and pop 'em on my fancy bikes. They even work fine with my very
modern shifters (caveat, I never got more modern than 8sp indexed downtube
shifters, but it sounded good).

Seriously though, those things are going to outlive me. I have quite a few
DX hubs still running fine (one got a surly fix-r and is now a fixed gear).
I can live quite happily without Dura-Ace, Red, Record, etc. Give me the
good stuff that works and lasts.

Those silver sun-tour front hubs Riv sold for something like $10 about 20
years ago are still humming along and looking great.

Re: [RBW] Atlantis build - how retro should I go on the drive train?

2019-02-22 Thread John McBurney
I’ve got a fairly large stable of high-ish end bikes with a variety of
drive trains ranging from 6 speed to 10 speed shimano but honestly only
partially shimano because my all weather commuter is a belt drive internal
gear bike and my 87 paramount, Dahon P9 Folder and Salsa Cassaroll low
trail conversion are in friction shift mode and fully independent of
manufacturers and spacing fashions of the day.

I am impressed by the shifting of my Bombadil which has a 9 speed Sun XCD
drivetrain with a SRAM cassette and a KMC chain. The derailleurs are said
to be more highly polished versions of the Sunrace mech. It all works
really well. Indexes perfectly.

There was a recent post on the list about a new group set 9 speed with a
rear mech with a clutch for $125 and I would say check if out. 9 speed and
a good chain rocks.

And if you are open to friction shifting “do what you want to”.

Pedals and water bottle cage not included.

I will throw in Nitto Mark's Rack M1 and medium size Wald basket (not shown

The bike rides beautifully and has never been down. There is a slight

yada yada. Except I'm not real impressed with any of it - the harsh ride,

It uses a proprietary cable pull ratio according to pinkbike - ties you

Alas, Sunrace have got a clutch-equipped 9sp rear derailleur in the

As stated in the original post, it measures 56cm CENTER TO TOP of the seat
lug. 54cm c-c. I’m stating what I measured. I don’t have the specifics of
the geometry but it’s going to be different than a stock Ram.

no complaints. Really comfortable and feels fast and light. Love the g-one

Re: [RBW] NAHBS film photo challenge

Eric,

I had thought you were talking about editing hard, but I see you mean
PRE-editing, and only shooting one roll. My acquaintance @cinedar uses the
hashtag #thinkmoreshootless. He shoots 4x5 film, but he does have
multi-sheet holders. And big lights and reflectors sometimes.

You make a good point, but I'd rather not limit the amount of film shot,
since people have different strategies to get good pictures.

Word from the grapevine is it's 55cm center-to-top-of-toptube. The 56 number -
maybe Della Santa sized it that way - is to the actual top of the seattube,
which is visibly a centimeter taller than the toptube.

Re: [RBW] Re: FS-Riv Road Custom frame/fork 54cm

2019-02-22 Thread Doug Van Cleve
It has a "56" engraved/stamped in the BB shell, I suspect that is a C-T
measurement and I'm also pretty sure the RRS had a slight upslope in the TT
as well. Remember, this is a custom. GP wouldn't do anything too weird,
but it could have a shorter TT than standard RBW geometry. I'm pretty sure
my 55cm Joe x2 '99, which has custom tube selections but standard geometry
is closer to square...

Yeah, something about these dimensions just doesn't "click" right. I have
a 54cm Rambouillet and it measures 54cm from C (of the BB) to T (of the top
tube). From the photo of this Riv custom, it looks like the length of the
head tube is almost exactly the same as my Ram. BUT, the Ram has a 2
degree sloping TT in order to make the head tube longer so the bars can be
set higher. The custom in the photo appears to have a straight
(non-sloping) TT. I'm suspicioning that this frame is a 56cm.

Great challenge, I'll enjoy the results though I won't be going to NAHBS.

David thanks for sharing your him blog, very thorough and interesting post
about diafine.  I think my mind was blown by this content;

I haven't film developed or shot much film myself in going on 5 years but this

2019-02-22 Thread Chris Birkenmaier
Hi guys. My apologies as I'm not trying to bump up my posting but I just
set up the Flickr account and am posting a link to the forum for the first
time. So I may have messed up. The link works for me when I click on it.
If anyone else is having problems in viewing the saddles could you please
back channel me and I'll try to get it to work.
thanks

Do want to get this working as I've wanted to post photos of my bikes and
never have.

[RBW] Re: Commuter oriented bike shop in LA?

2019-02-22 Thread Matt
Second to both Coco's and GSC but the solidly commuter-oriented shop in LA
is unfortunately a bit of a tall order. Flying Pigeon is long gone. Aika
Trading was great and all about the Northern European approach (and where I
got my Brompton) but they too have moved on. The Wheelhouse was in that
mold and a Riv dealer, actually had Rivs on the floor...

Ha, sorry, this isn't remotely helpful, cataloguing all the shops you can't
visit. It's a bit of a sore spot for me, as someone who commutes 13mi round
trip on the west side. I love GSC but I never, ever go there because it's
too far to ride for anything day to day and it's a 45-minute drive most
times on the weekend.

[RBW] Re: Bosco bars grip suggestions

2019-02-22 Thread Marc Irwin

I have them on my Sam and Hunq. I tried some bolt on leather grips but
have since switched to Riv cork on both. VO leather wrap on the rest of
the bar (The "city bike" grip is long enough). I've also used Dia Compe
"stoker" knobs as a midpoint grip and interrupter levers on the flats.
