Re: [RBW] Re: Remember Islabikes?

This post died long ago, but I’m hoping to address all of you who got one of
these long enough ago that your kids might have outgrown.

If anyone has a red Islabikes Beinn 20S that I could buy, I sure would love to
find one for my grandson’s 5th birthday this month.

Re: [RBW] Re: Hiluki vintage ??

2019-05-03 Thread Chad
Hey Sean, welcome to the AHH club! I thought I recognized your name from the
‘82 Sequoia I bought last summer in Lawrence.

I have been trying to date my AHH as well. Mine is a 52cm 650B complete that
the previous owner bought from Riv in I believe 2009 according to the old RBW
invoice I have from the owner. It is Toyo-built with the current style fork
crown, lighter AHH blue with an almost purple tint, and serial number AHH02**.
IIRC previous owner told me that RBW had Waterford AHH frames in stock and a
few Toyo frames leftover in the warehouse. She requested the older Toyo
version because she liked the lighter blue.

Michael liked you bike a ton which says something because he rides a his old
steel frame around an awful lot. His old trek 820 has a SON dynamo hub on some
nice hand built wheels and 3 decades of replacement parts and upgrades ... he
puts more than 12,000 miles on it every year, he’s hilarious and rides the the
Napa Eagles cycling club a lot. Find him (and possibly me) at Molinari’s on

They usually do a bikes-only weekend on that road as well, your message

Re: [RBW] Re: Will there be other riv-ish bikes on the 5 Borough Bike Tour (NYC)?

2019-05-03 Thread ascpgh
Take time and smell the roses (and enjoy some local “off course” coffee and
food).

My wife and I did the ride a few years back and the urge to “keep going” made
us look askew at the big crowds at the rest stops. By the time We were up on
the Gowanus Parkway she was really tired and thirsty. I pushed her seatpost
with one hand to the park at the foot of the Verrazano Narrows Bridge and the
vendors awaiting us.

The only other thing she grew tired of was the endless complimenting my orange
Rambouillet drew. “Why do so many people think that bike fits you so well?” she
asked.

I saw ten or so Rivendells. Figured it was about right.

[RBW] Put an e-bike kit on my Cheviot

2019-05-03 Thread KC
Very scary thing I just did. A major dilemma - make it so my "perfect" bike
could get up the hill out of my driveway so I could ride it everywhere or
risk ruining the ride on my perfect bike, not to mention making it a little
heavier to lift for the bike rack. But we had to do something so we took
the leap.

We had a shop in Pacific Beach (San Diego area) install the mid-drive kits
purchased from Luna Cycles. Took our first ride Wednesday and went up the
hill like it wasn't there. We set it up for maximum 20 speed and did not
put the throttle on, so just using the pedal assist. It took a few minutes
for me to get used to the feel of the pedal assist and how to shift now
using a combination of the gears and the assist. I thought the ride was
"different" but very good, a slightly different version of biking. Chuck
thinks I over-analyze and is just extremely happy with his new set-up on
his Space Horse.

I turned the system off completely after our first stop out of the
neighborhood and left it off until close to home again. Went up a hill I
am used to without any assist and it didn't feel much different, maybe a
little more effort required due to the added weight. That made me very
happy because I want to be able to ride "normally" as much as possible. I
had to give up my rear rack space for the battery. Maybe that wouldn't be
the case for a larger Cheviot - could it be installed where the bottle cage
goes? Chuck only had to give up 1 bottle cage spot. Since I will just
"borrow" one of Dave Carroll's pannier sets (he'll never notice), I will be
just fine.

Joe Bernard expressed concerns about the brakes on the Cheviot relative to
adding the kit. I understand what he is saying because it is a powerful
machine. But I am a slow, conservative, rider so I think I am ok.

Part of my agonizing was not knowing how much power I needed to add to the
bike to accomplish what I needed. I now know I probably have twice as much
as I need. Guess I'll be ready for anything. When Keven spec'd my bike he
said I would be able to go up a tree trunk. He was wrong, but now I think I
can. And, very important, my bike is still beautiful.

One added note. In my research leading up to the decision, I spent some
time thinking about battery fires and made sure it doesn't affect my
homeowner's insurance. My agent assured me it doesn't. BUT I did discover
that once you electrify a bike, it is a motorized vehicle and not covered
under your homeowner's policy. So not only does it not cover a loss to the
bike, but you are not covered for liability if you hurt someone while you
are riding it. I didn't want that added risk so I purchased liability
insurance for $108 each a year. To avoid the very high cost of coverage for
loss to the bike itself, I declared the value at $500, matching the policy
deductible.

I'll be there on my orange Quickbeam with my son and our friends. We park
on Staten Island and coming over on the ferry for the 2nd wave start, so
look for us if you're doing the same. I think this is our 8th year for my
friend and I. And the 7th year for my son. he use to ride the back of the
tandem, but now rides his own single speed Holdsworth .

As far as the bike traffic goes, I'll take it any day over car traffic!
Bumping into another cyclist and falling over is much better than being run
over by a car.

[RBW] Glacier Point Road in Yosemite open to bikes only Sat May 4

See https://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/tioga.htm

for info and updates on not yet announced bikes only dates for Tioga Road.

Glacier Point is a 36 mile round trip out-and-back from Wawona Road. I
recall entry fee as $30/car from last year. Facilities along the road are
usually closed, so be self-sufficient. Photo is lunch from last year. On
bikes only days the only visitors out at the point either biked in or hiked
up from the valley. The website isn't entirely clear, but it looks like
Sunday may be bikes only too. Will be out there Sat on orange tandem.
